Cable Modem, Static IP and AE

Hello, first post here.
Last sunday, I helped a friend install a new airport extreme card in his 1.8 GHz PPC G5 and we tried to create a wireless network between his mac and and a Toshiba laptop using a refurbished AE. The installation of the card went smoothly but we were unable to set the internet connection for both machines.
He has a cable modem and his ISP assigned a static IP to his main machine, the G5. After we plugged the router's ethernet cable to the airport, there was simply no way we could connect to the internet. I read a lot of posts here regarding the subject and I really don't know what went wrong. If I got it right, in this specific case, the "Distribute IP Addresses" option should be disable since the AE would act only as a wireless access point. So, we disabled that option and it didn't work. All we got was an amber blinking light. After fiddling around with the AirPort Admin Utility, we changed the option "Connect using", under the Internet tab, from PPPoE to Ethernet. The AE was updated but the amber light was still blinking. Under the same tab, we changed "Configure" from "Using DHCP" to "Manually" and I filled out all the info I had received from the ISP. The AE was updated and finally we got the green light. But no connection whatsoever. We tried changing the settings several times but to no avail.
I brought the AE home, tested it and it worked perfectly here, where I have a broadband ADSL connection with dynamic IP (I had to turn on the "Distribute IP Addresses" option and change the connection from Ethernet to PPPoE). So I ruled out the possibility of a broken AE. Then, today, I read this post here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1114375&#1114375
Where Henry B. answers a question by saying:
"What I suggest you do is disable the router built into the Airport Express by unchecking the option to "distribute IP addresses" found under the Network tab of the Airport Admin Utility. Whether or not you manually assign an IP address to your Airport Express is up to you (but if you do, make sure it is above the range used by the D-Link router's own DHCP server). Restart all wireless computers. From this point on, ALL computers on your network including those connecting via the Airport Express will obtain an IP address from the D-Link router's DHCP server"
My question is: the whole installation should have worked if we only had restarted the computers? What about the amber blinking light when the "Using DHCP" option is enabled?
We'll probably try again later this week but it would be nice if someone could shed some light on the problem.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hello,
I've been searching forever but no one at my isp nor any of the "geniuses" have been able to help me solve my network issues. Any advice is appreciated. If you want to avoid reading the history of what I've tried - just tell me how to set up a network to allow -
1. 5 devices using the static ips assigned by my DSL isp.
2. 5-10 devices using Dynamic ips assigned by an Airport Extreme, including both wireless and wired.
3. my ethernet connected airport express (connected to my whole house speaker) to also provide wireless access to the network for that side of the house.
Maybe you don't need to know my frustrating history. Here's the short version
Despite every configuration imaginable, using 2 different hubs, 1 main hub, modem to Airport, modem to hub... the list goes on - I haven't been able to get both my static and dynamic wired devices networking at the same time.
1. Modem to Airport WAN, hub to Airport LAN - allows wired and wireless devices but only with Airport assigned addresses. (I need to use my isp addresses too)
2. Modem to Hub, Airport WAN to hub, wired static devices to hub - allows use of my isp static addresses & Airport assigned dynamic but only for wireless devices.
3. Modem to Hub1, Airport WAN to hub1, wired static devices to hub1, Airport LAN to hub2, wired dynamic devices to hub2 - give the error message "no dchp server found".
Second Part:
AExpress- WDS extended the signal but ruined the music transfer. Songs skipping etc. Ethernet connection is great for airtunes but wireless signal disappears if I uncheck "distribute ips". Since Extreme already distributes - why won't the express grab some of them? Roaming needs static ips & I need my isp statics for other WAN devices. I just need the Express to bridge to our local LAN & operate AirTunes simultaneously.
whew! thanks for any advice

  • Suggestions for Cable Modem and Wireless Router

    Hey everyone!
I have the new iMac and would like to have a faster wireless router. Currently using an old D-Link Wireless G router and would like something like the Time Capsule (as it has Airport Extreme in it) or Netgear Rangemax Dual Band Wirless-N Gigabit Router. My problem is, my Internet is through my cable company, so it comes into the house as a cable connection. It appears that these two combos would still require the use of a cable modem.
Any suggestions to keep the equipment down to one piece? If not, any suggestions for a cable modem so I can return this old one to the cable company?
What would be the best/quickest wireless router?
    Thanks for your help!

Go to your ISP's web site and do a search from your ISP for compatible cable modems. Then buy the capable modem your ISP says that is comp[atible. On the new cable modem find the Serial number & MAC address, make then call your ISP tech help desk and tell them the new modem you got and he/she will ask you that information. When the ISP tech says they can see/ping that new cable modem then it will work. Then connect a new cheaper Airport Extreme and any external USB2 hard drive to connect to that new Airport Extreme. I say this because Apple put out and Update a little while ago that will allow an external connected to an Extreme as a Time Machine disk.
PS: Remember the old trick of checking you Ethernet cables. I can't count how times I have seen professionals install all new high speed switches, routers, etc. and wonder why no speed is seen. Then after numerous trouble shooting they discover they used the old 10 Base T cables and just changing the cable solved their problem.
Just make sure you do this one at a time starting with getting the ISP compatible cable modems list to know what cable modem you can buy (to save that monthly ISP rental fee). Then you can get the going as long as so speak with your ISP tech to give them that new cable modem Serial number and MAC address so they can register it with their servers.
This will be to easy as long as you do things in step.

  • Bridge an AirPort Express from an Extreme connected to a Motorola DOCSIS 3 cable/modem/gateway via an ethernet cable? Can I connect ethernet to the Express to setup/handshake/coordinate, and then unplug the ethernet cable from the Express?

In other words, does the AirPort Extreme NEED to be the device connected to the coaxial cable, or can I connect that cable to the Motorola SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem/wireless gateway? (My Internet provider requires DOCSIS 3.0 for speeds above 12 megabits/sec.)
Will the Airport Extreme "program" the Express via an ethernet cable, and than the cable can be removed?
The "bridge" or "repeater needs to be quite a distance away from the physically connected cable modem/wireless gateway and the ethernet- connected AirPort Extreme, and we have wall-to-wall carpeting, and the walls and ceilings are off-limits (family politics), so a looooong ethernet cable is out of the question.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanx!

Switched from DSL to cable modem. My Airport light won't turn green. Keeps blinking orange. No wireless now and can't connect to more than one computer! ?????

    Hmmmm.
If you reset the AirPort Extreme by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds and then releasing, the AirPort should be back in default settings which would allow mutliple computers to connect to the LAN ports on the AirPort.
Power off the cable modem for now and leave it off at least 15 minutes.
With the AirPort Extreme still powered on, hold in the rest button on the back for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking abmer light.
Then, power off the AirPort Extreme.
Check to make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme.
After the modem has been powered off for at least 15 minutes, power it up and let it run for 5 minutes by itself.
Now, power up the AirPort Exteme and let it run for 2-3 minutes
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Express
Click on the AirPort Exteme, then click Continue to follow the guided setup tp configure the AirPort Extreme.  You can use the same wireless network name, password, etc that you used before, or set up a new name and password, etc.

  • Two networks - same cable modem

I have two networks in my home - an "n only" using the Airport Extreme Base Station into which the cable modem is attached, and a "g only" which is using the newly purchased Airport Express and which is connected to the Airport Extreme Base Station. The express is setup as a bridge only (I believe the Extreme is assigning the IP addresses). All seems to work.
    Two Q's:
    1. Can I use the Express in the fashion I mention above but connected wirelessly to the extreme? If so, how do I configure each unit?
    2. I have an Apple TV and was wondering if changing things so that the Express assigns the IP addresses if things might speed up a little regarding Apple TV syncs.
    Thanks!!

morahgreg, Welcome to the discussion area!
    1. Can I use the Express in the fashion I mention above but connected wirelessly to the extreme? If so, how do I configure each unit?
If you are willing to lose the high speed of the 802.11n only network, you can configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to operate in an 802.11b/g compatible mode. Then any 802.11b/g client can join including the AirPort Express (AX).
    2. I have an Apple TV and was wondering if changing things so that the Express assigns the IP addresses if things might speed up a little regarding Apple TV syncs.
    No it will not.

  • Does anyone know how to connect to wireless internet using a Hitron CVE-30360 cable modem. My Macbook doesn't even see the network?

I just received my cable modem from Hitron and I am unable to connect to it. My phone and other computers and see it as a wireless network but my Macbook doesn't even show it a network that I can connect to. It is totally invisible to my Macbook. Can anyone help with this?

Assuming "BellSouth" uses the same procedure as "SBCGlobal", which are now both ATT/Yahoo, as far as I know:
Take router from box. Connect to power outlet and phone outlet.
Take Ethernet cable, plug one end into the router's jack marked LAN, plug other end into your computer's Ethernet jack.
Point your Web browser to 192.168.1.1 (enter this into your browser's address bar, actual address might vary, check your router's documentation.)
A Web form will appear. Set router to PPPoE, if necessary. Enter the user name your ISP gave you. Enter the password.
Watch all the lights on your router go green.
Or, if the router is already set up, since you used it with your Dell laptop previously:
Take Ethernet cable, plug one end into the router's jack marked LAN, plug other end into your computer's Ethernet jack. Done.
The second from the left is your Ethernet jack:

  • WRT54G V5 loses connection to BEFCMU10 cable modem

I have a BEFCMU10 on my cable internet service, with a WRT54G downstream. The cable modem works fine, and when the computer is connected directly to it, all is well.
When I connect the WRT54G, all is fine for, say, 8 hours, then the computer loses the connection. Cycling the power to the WRT is required to get up and running again.
I suspect that I have not configured the WRT correctly. It's set to use DHCP to connect to the BEFCMU. Are there specific settings I need to make for this setup?Message Edited by stowaway on 08-21-2006 05:05 PM

If you connect your computer directly to the modem, are you able to go online without any problem? If yes, try to access the setup page of the router and check the status page of the router and check if your getting a public IP address under internet IP. If your not getting a public IP, go to the setup tab and click on mac address clone, enable the mac clone and click clone pc's mac then save the settings. after that do a power cycle on the router and the modem and try to check again the status page of the router if your getting a public ip. If your getting a public ip and still having the same problem, try to lower down the MTU of the router to 1490 up to 1300.

Sadly I do not have a TV Tuner Card. I run Windows Vista Home Premium (x64). It is also a custom computer I built. But based on the replies it's suggesting I need one? That a simple USB connection between the two will not be sufficient?
I dont think that your cable box can stream contents thru its USB ports, that wont work. Also check your video card s-video plug, most likely it's video out only (for TV monitor). You need some kind of input device for your pc to be able to connect it to your cable box, either a TV tuner card, a capture card (usb or pci card) etc.

  • Mac causes cable modem to reboot/reset

I have a MacBook connected to a D-Link DGL-4500 router via 5GHz 802.11n. The DGL-4500 is connected to my Ambit cable modem (Roadrunner is my ISP.) I have various other devices hanging off of the router, including an Airport Express (for Airtunes streaming.)
Whenever my MacBook connects to the router, or otherwise gets a new DHCP address, it causes my cable modem to reboot/reset, which knocks down my Internet connection until the modem comes back up. This happens every time I wake the MacBook from sleep. It also happens if I switch from wireless to wired ethernet, and it also happens if I take the router out of the picture and connect the MacBook directly to the cable modem.
None of the other devices on the network cause this to happen.
Any suggestions on where to look to try to figure out what it is about the MacBook that my cable modem doesn't like?

You should complain to your cable company; nothing a network device can do should affect the cable modem like that, and I'm not sure what has to be done to update the firmware on a cable modem (it's likely pushed from the cable company side.)
The cable company may also be able to provide you with an alternate brand of cable modem.

    static (inside,outside) tcp interface 3390 xx.xx.xx.xx 3389 netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0
we will also have to change the access-list to access-list inbound permit tcp any interface outside eq 3390

    3- wap371 AP/ 11pcs..
now everything is working perfect except sometimes we have more than 250 to 300 people trying to connect to the wifi, the router will have no enough ip addresses.
i heard that i can setup 2 vlans to solve this problem? and is there any setup that i have to do on switch and Access points?
please i will appreciate any little help

  • WRT54G and Comcast Cable Modem Setup

Please help.  I just bought a LINKSYS WRT54GS and I'm trying to set up a wireless network for my laptop (No other computers on network), and my ISP is Comcast.  The model # on the Comcast Broadband Modem is DHG535-2 and the manufacturer is RCA.  The computer sees the network but only shows a local connection.  No internet.  I have tried everything and it will not let get on the internet.  I have checked all cables several times and the connections seem to be right.  I don't know where to go from here.  Can someone please help me?  I will be very grateful!
    Thanks

Is your problem related to getting on the internet in general?  Or are you able to get on the internet, but now you need to get the wireless network setup?
    1) There might be some lights on the cable modem that indicate if it is successfully connecting to the internet.  On mine(a different model/brand) I have three lights that must all be lit up to indicate I'm on the internet.  Whenever they are not all lit up, it is usually an indication that either there is a problem with comcast's network, a problem with my coaxial cables providing the Comcast service, interferance (one time they had to come out and replace some of their equipment at my apartment complex, if you have analog cable and look at the lower channels on your cables TV, 4-10,and there is lots of static, then this might be a problem, a tech told me those channels are close to the range that internet is provided on, so static on them can indicate problems that would also effect internet0, or the lights not being lit up might indicate you hagve registered that modem on their network.  There is some sort of process that you have to do when you first get comcast internet service that gets you setup on their network.  I believe it registers the MAC address of your cable modem.  If the lights are not lit up(this is where you need to refer to your cable modem manual to see what lights indicate problems), then you may need to go through this process or check with Comcast.
In my case I had a CD from comcast in the Startup Package, had to connect cable modem to my PC via USB(what a freaking pain), and then go through the software's wizard to get setup on their network.  This also installs some junk on my computer like a usb driver.  Additionally, I had a computer with two network cards, and the software would not work correctly on it(kept choosing the wrong network card.  I had to actually remove one of the cards, and then go through the wizard.
    2) You should be able to connect the cable modem directly to your computer via CAT5, to see if you can get an itnernet connection that way first.  This will at least verify that you can get on the internet before you intreduce all the other variables of the router.  If you can't get on this way.

  • Connecting Two WRT54GS Wireless To A Cable Modem w/ TIVO, PS3, and Wii

Not real great in the networking thing. Upon reading I have found that you can only use WEP on a wireless adapter pluged into a TIVO (series 2 that is christmas gift to wife) to connect it to the internet, and as a concern of having to downgrade my entire network on my main router to WEP I looked for a solution. I read somewhere that if you cat5e from the TIVO into a WRT54GS you can then use the router to send wireless with WPA (or WPA2) to another WRT54GS that is cat5e  into the modem. To complicate things I am giving my kids a PS3 and a Wii for christmas and wanted to connect it to the same router as the TIVO.  My internet is Charter Comunications cable. The two routers are Versions 5 and 6. The TIVO is remote and I cannot get cat 5e cable to it so I need to use wireless. All distances are ok for wireless. The "main" router that is plugged into the cable modem is a ver.6 and is set in DHCP. All "gifts" are wrapped under the tree so I can't set those components before christmas. I would like to setup the routers to speed things along. I have a laptop (hardwired ) to the second router to set it up. Two other computers and a HP printer are connected to the "main" router. All computers are Windows XP -SP2.
    Questions:
    1. Can this be done with these components and keep security on the "Main" router maintained?
    2. Upon reading these boards it sounds like I should split my system into two seperate routers with the second one passing thru the main router. How would this be done? What are the settings? Reserve addresses for static in the main router to use in the second and run as one system? Remember I am not to good at the network thing... so be complete in the explaination.
    3. If I do things as indicated in question 2 will that leave my TIVO, PS3, and Wii open to attack to the internet? Any way to better secure?
    4. Any pointers as to how this really should be done would help. Any better ideas in setup??
    Thanks.......

Yep, I wanted to connect them wireless but it sounds like I cant without some issues.
Second choice: Cascade--  Connect routers by Cat 5e and make the second one a WEP that has the TIVO, PS3, and the Wii connected wireless to it. The main Router would have the computers and printer connected to it. The main router would be WPA (2) protected for a wireless laptop.
    Is the second choice possible??
Should the second router be with static IP's??  Is this the best way to do this with these types of items connected?
I think this will make two wireless systems but if I make the second one a DHCP enabled one then I think it might cause conflicts with a chance of both routers picking the same IP for a connected item. What is the best method for doing this and keeping some type of security??

  • WRT54GS with Mac OS 10.6.8 and RCN cable modem not working

    Hello,
I have a Linksys WRT54GS, version 6 with Mac OS X (version 10.6.8) hooked up to a Scientific Atlantic cable modem, with RCN as the ISP.
Recently, RCN had some network issues, and so I had to power down and reset my modem. The modem is working fine now -- no problems at all when the Mac is connected direclty to the modem.
The router's network is OK in that I can connect the Mac wirelessly to the network, but I can't connect to the internet through the router (through neither the wireless or wired connection).
I have downloaded the latest firmware update for the router, following the Linksys site instructions, but this has not helped me solve the problem.
Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do? I did call Linksys tech support on the advice of RCN, and they said that the router does appear to be working (power, WLAN, and Internet lights are on), but they would be charging me nearly the cost of a new router to fix the problem.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Since you upgraded the Router WRT54GS with the latest firmware so once reset the Router and power cycle the whole network… Then connect the Modem with Linksys Router on the Internet Port and then connect any one computer to any one of the Ethernet port on the Router [Numbered – 1, 2, 3 and 4]… Let me know the RCN connection is a DSL connection or cable connection…
So if you have a DSL connection you can refer to this link:

So if you have a Cable Internet Connection you can refer to this link:

As far as the wireless is concern:
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page…
    # Then Click on wireless Tab create the Wireless Network Name SSID and select the channel to 6, 9, and 11… Click Save Settings...
    # Then Click on Wireless Security sub tab and select the security mode and provide the password as per the requirement… Click Save Settings...
After doing the settings try to connect the preferred network on the wireless devices and check the connectivity….
