Cables for Video Transfer

Hi
I want to transfer Video from an old Sony Camcorder Hi8 that uses a DV 4 Pin Firewire to a Macbook Pro Retina with Thunderport 2.
I understand i would have to use a Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 cable connected to a Firewire to Thunderport Adaptor which i'm assuming will work.
My question is would a Firewire 400 to USB cable work just as well ?

There are actually three possible connectors: 4-pin (sometimes called DV), which looks like a small trapezoid (actually looks very similar to a mini-USB connector); 6-pin, which is much larger and has one rounded side and one square side (generally called FireWire 400), and the newest 9-pin ("Firewire 800") which is square. Cameras usually have small DV connectors, so that would require a 4-pin to 9-pin.
If you post the model of your handycam, we can confirm that.

  • Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptor. 6-pin IEEE 1394 firewire for video transfer

Will the Apple Thunderbolt to firewire adaptor work with a IEEE 1394 6-pin firewire for video transfers?

You'll need a Firewire 800 (9-pin) to Firewire 400 (6-pin) adapter or cable, but yes, it should then work.

  • What cable should I buy for video transfer?

    Hi there.
I own a HP Pavilion dv5-WE847AV, which has no firewire port to the best of my knowledge. I need to transfer video from a mini DV camera (a Panasonic AG-DVX100b) which does have a firewire port. I will be using an adobe program to edit a documentary. I am posting pics of what ports I do have. Can anyone suggest a way(s) to transfer the video from the camera to my laptop or tell me if I even can?

    Hi,
Other option is to use Firewire Express card or Firewire PCMICA card (if your machine does not have Express card slot). They look similar to these:
       http://www.nextag.com/firewire-express-card/shop-html
They all work on HP and Dell laptops.
    Regards,
ps I've got both but now only use the Express card. I used the old one for my HP nx8220

  • My vote for PQ-DVD for video transfer

I would like to share my great experience with PQ-DVD. They released an iPod version of there famous PSP software and let me tell you, it works great. I have transfered serveral DVDs, home movies of course wink. You can also transfer videos files of other formats but I cant recall which ones exactly.
Its easy to do, just takes a few clicks and you no longer need to use multiple programs. You can adjust your Video/audio kbps to get the file quality your looking for. Its so easy, you almost have to be a moron to not figure it out. All movies tranfsfer into the MPEG-4 format.
There is a price tag of 34.99 but with the time and effort it has saved me, it was well worth it.

video quality is great. I havent been able to try it on a tv yet, but that wasnt really one of the features that this iPod sold me on.
I also upgraded to QT pro and it didnt work well at all for me. The files would record with no sound and it for QT pro to work, you would need another program to convert the dvd, and then send it through QT pro. Im sure there are great free programs, but the ease of use, and almost idiot-proof design is worth the 34.99 for me.

  • TB/TB Cable for Data transfer from Mini to MBP

I have a Mini w/ TB for display and am wondering if I should get the TB/TB cable so that data from mini can be transfered to new MBP?
Would Air Drop, FW800, or Etheret cable, be faster?

I believe TB is the fastest.

  • Ethernet disk for video capture

Is it possible to connect/mount an external network disk (LaCie's Ethernet Disk) directly to the ethernet port of an Intel iMac, without the use of an actual network/router? and if so, would this act as a reasonable drive for capturing DV and HDV video?
My plan is to use a 24" iMac as a completely stand alone, budget video editing station that only accessing the internet (via Airport) when requiring updates.

Whilst the theoretical speed of the Gigabit (1000Mbps) Ethernet port on the iMac is about that of the FW800 port I am sure that you will get better performance from a FW800 drive for video transfer due to the overheads involved in packetizing data to transfer over the 'network' to the disk.
FW800 can be had for a very reasonable price.

  • S Video Transfer Cable vs. Composite Video Transfer Cable???

I am double checking here after importing some footage. During review; I am not satisfied with the quality. Of course these are old and weren't stored well so I expect the actual footage to be deteriorating.
The thing that's bugging me is that the tracking seems fine on the T.V. but looks horribly off in iMovie during import and playback. Would the cable cause this?
I am wondering if I should purchase a $10 S-Video Transfer Cable and re-import the footage?
My little consumer digi-cam (Canon ZR40) only came with the RCA Composite type transfer cable.
Is the actual difference noticable to the human eye?
    Thanks

"..During review; I am not satisfied with the quality.." ..iMovie doesn't display as sharply as a TV ..this is really a "cut'n'paste" editing program, not really a viewing program, so you won't really see the full quality till you export back to tape, or to a DVD, and view that on a good screen ..so don't worry needlessly.
"..the tracking seems fine on the T.V. but looks horribly off in iMovie.." ..A TV doesn't normally show the extreme edges of a picture; they're intentionally cut off to avoid showing any 'raggedness' around the edges ..this is known as 'overscan'.
What you may be seeing - which won't be visible once you've edited, exported back to tape or DVD and are viewing on a similar TV - is probably the overlap or 'handover' between the video heads on the original recorder, giving an extra few lines of 'garbage' at the top or bottom of the screen.
This is normal ..that's how VCRs work ..it's just that you usually don't see it, except, perhaps, on a plasma or other flat-screen TV which scans right to the edges (..i.e; has no 'overscan').
"..purchase a $10 S-Video Transfer Cable and re-import the footage.." ..It'll probably make no difference.
Edit some of what you've imported ..say three minutes' worth. Export that back to the Canon, then play that from the Canon into your TV. Compare that with the original which you imported into the Canon.
I expect you'll see no difference ..maybe the imported, edited and exported looks slightly better, if a 'timebase corrector' inside the Canon gave a more sharply synchronised capture onto tape than the simple playback from your original VCR (..it does happen..)

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you have the cable, just connect it to both and the desktop will show up on the external display. Then, you can select different modes, changing arrangement in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement, or using shortcuts > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5019

    m1doc,
Are you migrating from a Mac or a MS Window machine? Either way you probably should be in touch with AppleCare, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. They can usually help on issues like this. If you don't know the phone number please use http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 to help find the number in your country.

  • Video cable for the Iphone 3G - audio only, no video output to TV

I have been reading that with the iphone 3G you HAVE to buy apples video cables in order to play back video on your TV, is this true?
I just got a cable for christmas and it isn't officially licensed by apple and the video does not output to the TV, only the audio. I hope this isn't the case, but maybe it is true??
If my cable isn't working because of some need (forced on us by apple) to only use "apple" cables I will never purchase videos from itunes. It seems rather trivial to have to buy proprietary cables for more $$ in order to buy videos from itunes doesn't it??
In other words... Give us more money so you can keep buying things from us.
Sorry, I am a bit frustrated.

    Let's be constructive:
BUT WHY doesn't it work? and how can we fix it/make it work?
my cheap 'non apple' video cable works fine initially, then a message pops up about it not being an 'offcial' cable or some such, then asks if I want to enable airplane mode (both with or without it already disabled), and disables video out completely. Contrary to the many others that have overpaid for your proprietary cables; I'm NEVER EVER EVER EVER going to pay you for your atrociously overpriced cables, because you're action of 'disabling' 3rd party cables is monopolistic in any sense, destroys any hope competition in this area, hinders innovation by third party peripheral developers, and is downright unamerican imho because it does so. You've gone to far this time apple! I've come to the conclusion, you obviously don't care about functionality, as your hardware is almost always overpriced, proprietary, good looking junk, and you keep shaking my pockets for more money with your overpriced accessories and constant barrage of itunes streamery.
Anyway, how can I use my device to do video out on this officially licensed apple dock I have? It doesn't seem to work; and I paid a lot of money for it. If there isn't a solution; maybe you should give out refunds for all the devices that now don't work? Thanks

  • Which FW cable for Transfer and Future use?

    Hi,
Will be starting up a new imac 21.5" Intel i3 soon and have been advised to purchase a 400 - 800 FW cable for the Setup Assistant transfer.
I have multiple older devices currently, a mini DV movie camera, a Pentax digital camera, iPod, etc, some of which use FW and some use USB 2.0.
Should I buy a 800 - 800 cable to keep for these devices that use FW
(movie camera) and a 400 to 800 adapter for the single use of transferring rather than a 400 - 800 cable?
Am I overthinking this? Just want to buy the right piece the first time and not have to make two separate cable purchases ( 400-800 and 800-800 ) instead of a cable and an adapter which should be less expensive?

So this isn't a 400mbs Firewire unit? The info in the pulldown under the Apple "About This Mac" pretty much said it was?
Do you have a port that looks like this, if so it's FW 400.
After going to the link and entering my serial #, all I got were instruction on upgrading memory and installing an Airport card.
Huh, they must not archive manuals that far back from this site.

  • Nokia Video Cable for n95 vs Cheap Video cable, wh...

Hey, so im interested into understanding why the nokia video cable for n95 costs around 40€ in my country while you can get a very very cheap one for no more than 6€.
What are the advantages of nokia 1 vs a normal 1? does it scale the image to a higher resolution than the phone 240*320? does it offer anything else at all than basic video/stereo audio output?
Im rly curious since i find the price just ridiculous if its the same!
IF anyone has any information ill be gratefull, thank you all in advance!

Nokia video cable comes with, if i am not wrong, 6 months warranty and you can expect quality though not that well in the video but in the cable. A friend of mine bought a video cable for his 5800 from other shop it worked well, make sure you dont buy a very cheap product which maynot be compatible with the phone, better test infront of the shop person if possible.

  • Dynex Component Audio/Video cable for iPhone doesn't just play music?

I just purchased Dynex Component Audio/Video cable for iPhone and it plays video, but not music. It only works when I'm using Neflix or the video component of the iPod. How do I get it to just play my music?
If I run the iPod music and open Netflix the music will play, but that is just a roundabout way of getting it to play audio and is silly. How do I get it to just play audio?

don't think so but the component rely on normal analog signals using RCA connectors
you can find tons of 3.5mm minijack connector and 2 rca connectors in the other cables
they are dirt cheap and you can even make them yourself

No, you need the new cable that connects to the connector on the bottom, not the audio jack. The 3g Nano and Touch need the new cable.
