CAC card reader now works in Mac OS....

I finally got my CAC card reader to work in MAC OS. I used the scr3310 reader and MAC OS driver.
Now I need to find a Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) that can use the CAC reader. I have tried both 1.0.3 and 2.0.1 with no success.
Has anyone successfully used a RDC in MAC OS?
Thx !!
Mike

The MS RDP does not yet implement SmartCard enabling (which really ***** as the MS product seems pretty well done otherwise). I got CAC (via VPN) working using RDESKTOP via the installation procedures posted by TRON in August, 2008 under the topic heading "MS Remote Desktop and smart card reader". TRON's procedure makes the appropriate modification to the CONFIGURE file during the build and uses the OpenSource (SourceForge) implementation of RDESKTOP <rdesktop.sourceforge.net>, aka, <www.rdesktop.org>.
Here is a recap of TRON's procedure:
=====================================================
CARD READER ACTIVATION
1.) Plug in your card reader
2.) Open Terminal and run this command:
sudo pcsctool
3.) When prompted, enter your admin password. You should see:
Select the approprate token driver:
1. commonAccessCard.bundle
2. GSCISPlugin.bundle
3. mscMuscleCard.bundle
4. slbCryptoflex.bundle
Enter the number:
4.) Type "1" (without quotes) and press enter, and you should see something like:
Insert your token in: OmniKey CardMan 3121 00 00
Token support updated successfully !
5.) Keep your card reader plugged in and use rdesktop install instructions
RDESKTOP INSTALL
1. Make sure Xcode Tools is installed on your computer. It should be on your OS X install disk.
2. Find out where your X11 libraries are located:
-From the Finder menu, selct "Go" >> "Go to Folder..."
-Type (without the quotes) "/usr/X11", and click "Go"
You should see a bunch of folders. Make sure the "include" and "lib" folders are there. Otherwise you need to find out where the X11 "include" and "lib" folders are located on your computer.
3. Download rdesktop and place the (unarchived) rdesktop-1.6.0 folder on your Desktop
4. Open the X11 application (should be in your Utilities folder)
5. In the X11 window type the following (without the quotes):
"cd Desktop/rdesktop-1.6.0 && ./configure --enable-smartcard -x-includes=/usr/X11/include -x-libraries=/usr/X11/lib && make && sudo make install"
4. Hit enter. When prompted, enter your administrator password and hit enter.
rdesktop should now be installed in the following folder:
/usr/local/bin
So, to launch rdesktop with smartcard log in enabled, open the X11 application (or Terminal application) and type the following (without the quotes, and replace your.server.address with the server address):
"cd /usr/local/bin && ./rdesktop -r scard your.server.address"
Hit enter and it should launch a new X11 window that will try to access the remote server where you should be prompted for your PIN.
To explore more options with rdesktop, open X11 and type the following (without quotes):
"cd /usr/local/bin && ./rdesktop"
Hit enter and you should get a list of options available to rdesktop.
=========================================================
TRON's procedure works. I tried to get it working using the MACPORTS (formerly DarwinPorts) <www.macports.org> implementation of RDESKTOP. It actually uses the same OpenSource implementation, but the build procedures are completely different. The MACPORTS implementation would build properly and run. But I could not get the build to enable SmartCard. I tried modifying the PORTFILE by adding a new variant call that according to SourceForge (ticket#20664) should work:
variant smartcard description {enables smartcard forwarding} {
configure.args-append --enable-smartcard
It probably does work if you can get the CONFIGURE file appropriately. The variant call in the PORTFILE apparently does not do that modification on its own. MACPORTS builds and installs the various software "ports" (including RDESKTOP) by on-the-fly pulling the information form the TAR file into a temporary workspace. So you have to (somehow) make the modification happen as the CONFIGURE file is pulled into temporary workspace. I have not yet figured it out.
The advantage of the MACPORTS implementation is that there is a simple uninstall script built into all of the software "ports". The SourceForge version of RDESKTOP has no such uninstall capability (that I can find) built in. I would, therefore, prefer to use the much more elegant MACPORTS implementation, which leads to my two questions:
1. Has anybody found a straightforward procedure to enable SmartCards/CAC during the build of the MACPORTS version of RDESKTOP?
2. How do I safely and cleanly uninstall the non-MACPORTS <SourceForge.org> version of RDESKTOP?

  • CAC Card Reader not working on 1 of 2 computers

I have an iMac 20-inch early 2009 and a MacBook Pro early 2011. I have installed OSX 10.8.5 on both. I followed the instructions to the letter from http://militarycac.com/ on both computers. I am able to use my SCR331 reader successfully on my MacBook Pro but am not able to use it on my iMac.
    On the iMac:
I am able to see the SCR331 is conencted and recognized via System Information. The SCR331 version is 5.25 (updated firmward as suggested at ttp://militarycac.com/)
I attempted to install Centrify (which did not work) so I chose CaCKey instead, which installed just fine
When I plug the reader in, the light lights up steady. When I insert my CAC it does not blink like it should. The CAC certificates do not show up in Keychain either.
When I unplug the reader from my iMac and plug it into my MacBook Pro, it works just fine... I'm missing something somewhere........
Any help wold be greatly apprecitated! Thank you!

    I forgot to add:
On my previous version of OSX (unfortunately I can't remember which I upgraded from) I was able to use my CAC Card reader on my iMac. So, after upgrading to 10.8.5 I was no longer able to use it with the OSX native software. I wonder if some of the settings I had to tweak (when using the old OSX) are affecting this problem now...
I had never tried using my reader on my MBP previously.

  • How can I get a CAC card reader to work on a new iPad with a lightning connector?

I need to know if it is possible to use a CAC card reader for military use on a new iPad with a lightning connector. I saw the lightning to USB connector but wasn't sure it the iPad will support it.

SD CARD SLOT NOT RECOGNIZING SD CARD?

SD Cards not reading! Read here!
I had the same problem with my MBP-R-15". So I took a look inside the SD Card slot and noticed a contact point on the side. For the SD card to be noticed this needs to be pressed in by the SD Card or it cant be read.
    Solution:
Make sure your SD Card read/write selector switch is up away from contacts. This will ensure it makes contact with the internal MBP contact switch.
Now slide your SD Card into the MBP SD Slot, and gently push it towards you (if your facing your MBP to type).
This will allow the SD Card to make contact the internal slot "switch" and it will be recognized.
It is tricky but easy enouph to deal with.
Internal switch is sticking over time.

  • CAC card reader with Snow Leopard

I recently switched to my macbook pro, but cannot use my CAC card reader (smart card) to access email and systems from work. The only info I can find indicates that the readers are not supported/compatible with my system. Other than using bootcamp or parallels and Windows XP, does anyone have any guidance? Any assistance would be welcome. Thanks.

I'm trying to use my CAC reader on my new MBP...old MB had Tiger, so I bought SCM SCR331 reader and downloaded the middleware available for it. Was able to log into AF Portal, but never my email...always errored out and I assumed that for some reason, the reader or the OS or Safari, was not using the correct certificate (there are at least 2 on the ID card...one for regular log in and another for email). At work, the PC asks me which certificate to use when I access my email through the AF Portal and I choose the one marked EMAIL. My MB would not ask...
Now, with my brand new MBP, the SCR331 is just not detected. Reading through the information on militarycac.com, I must need a firmware update that is not available for Mac...your information on the SGT111 is very helpful, and since its fairly cheap, I think I will buy one and be rid of firmware issues.
Accessing my email from home is very important to me, so this last post has me feeling a bit deflated. Please update if you figure anything out, I only have the MB and MBP in my home. I'm also thinking of seeing if the 'genius' at my local Apple store can help...

Could you please resolve this problem,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Simply take it to an Apple Store or reseller if it's in warranty. Your Mac will be repaired or replaced for free because it looks a hardware problem rather than a software issue.
If it's not in warranty, hold Command and R keys while your MacBook is starting up, and reinstall OS X. If it doesn't work, you can't do much more to solve the problem

  • T430s SDHC card reader not working

Hi, I recently bought a T430s and when I tried to insert a SD card it did not show up in my computer. I've tried 3 different SD cards the sizes are16 gb, 32 gb and 2 gb and neither of them shows up, to make sure the problem is not in the SD card I tried using the SD cards in 2 cameras and 2 other laptops. In all those devices the cards works.
I have tried installing these drivers from this thread https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/New-T430s-4-in-1-express-card-SD-reader-mi... but it did not work.
I also tried following the instructions in this thread http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T430s-card-reader-cannot-read-16-GB-SDHC-ca... but that did not help either.
According to the device manager the Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller is working correctly. The Ricoh SD Disk Device is also working correctly.
Whenever I insert the SD card the Sound for a new device plays and when i remove the SD card the removal sound plays. How can I fix this? I'm going away for 7 weeks with my laptop so I need to fix it ASAP and I dont have time to send the laptop to Lenovo.
    EDIT:
I uninstalled Ricoh Media driver and now 1 of the cards show up but Windows complains about that it needs to be formatted, but the size is 0 so that doesn't work either. Tried installing the driver again and now they show up in the device manager again and proudly says that they are working but the SD card still doesn't show up so I can read the files on it.
    EDIT 2:
If I go into the device manager and forcibly update the the Ricoh SD Disk Device then it says:
    Disc: Disc 1
    Type: Removable
    Status: Online
    Partitiontype: MBR (Master Boot Record)
    Capacity: 15807 MB
    Non-allocated space: 0 MB
    Allocated space: 0 MB
For the 32 gb SD card everything is the same but instead it says "Capacity: 30828 MB".
    EDIT 3:
When the SD card is inserted a storage device pops up in the device manager. The name of the device is just "Unknown device" and the status is that it can't find any installed drivers for the device.

I'm experiencing a similar situation with my 1-year old T430s. The built-in card reader was working fine until recently when it stopped working.
Now the built-in SD card reader doesn't recognize SD cards that are recognized in external USB adapters.
Device Manager shows Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Controller when an SD card is inserted into the card reader but neither Windows Computer Management/Disk Management nor Windows Explorer show the drive. Device Manager indicates that the driver is up-to-date (v6.10.10.32 25May11.)
When I put the same SD cards into an external USB adapter they're recognized by Windows, assigned a drive letter and visible to Windows Explorer as well as other applications.
Do I have a defective card reader?

  • Broadcom USB Smart Card reader not working

After upgrading my Vista Business SP2 (32-bit) to Windows 7 Ultimate RC (32-bit) my Broadcom USB smart card reader does not work any longer (Dell Latitude E6400 with built in smart card reader).
The newest available driver from dell support was already tested (Broadcom, driver date 09/23/2008, version 1.0.0.1, digitally signed WHQL, released by dell in March 09), but the device can not start (Error code 10) with Windows 7.
With the Microsoft WUDF Driver (Usbccid, driver date 06/21/2006, version 6.1.7100.0) the device starts but whenever I insert my smart card an additional device is detected (other device - smart card) but no driver found - Error message is: The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28).
What else can I try to get this reader working again (with vista sp2 the smart card reader was working fine with the broadcom driver)?

I have also an USB card reader that works fine on XP PCs but Win7 does not recognise it, can msft make a sd reader driver that works pls.
    Hi
Sorry, but the way the industry works is that Microsoft develops Windows and Hardware manufacturers develop drivers for their products. Microsoft does maintain a complete division (MSDN) that is dedicated to assisting hardware and software manufacturers in developing their products for compatibility with Windows.
All of the drivers that are contained on the Windows installation disk and on Windows Update are placed there by the manufacturers of the devices. This is a service that Microsoft provides to help these manufacturers to distribute their drivers.
    What you can do.
    1. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated drivers for that device. This is your best source, since the computer manufacturer builds, tests, and sometimes develops their own, custom drivers to work with the hardware on their PCs.
    2. Try to determine the name and manufacturer of the device using Device Manager and MSInfo32. Once this information is found, try to find that manufacturers website and look for the latest compatible drivers.
    3. Check to see if there are any users forums on the PC manufacturers or device manufacturers websites. Ask there about any known issues with this particular hardware device or if the device is no longer supported.
    4. If the drivers are found but are only available for previous versions of Windows, install the drivers using the Windows Compatibility Mode. HOW TO: Install a Hardware Device Driver using Compatibility Mode
Right now, we are in a unique situation since we are using an operating system that is still in the pre-release phase. Many hardware/software manufacturers will be ofrficially supporting their products for Windows 7 until after the General Availability date of October 22, 2009.
    Hope this helps.
Thank You for using Windows 7

Now The 7 in 1 card reader does not work! I am used to installing new hardware. There is no entry in the Device Manager for a card reader. I have tried an SD card and a CF card. Tried restarting the PC, tried running Add/Search new hardware wizard. Nothing gets detected. This PC is more trouble than it is worth! The firewire ports and usb ports on the same front panel all seem to work? I've run out of things to try so if anyone has an idea I'd be grateful..
Tech support from MSI - rubbish.

I dont think it is then end of the world if the card reader doesnt work, anyway
what OS are you using? Windows XP should install a driver automatically.
Is the flash drive cable connect to to the motherboard? check the manual to find the cable and enusre it is connected.

  • SD Card Reader, USB works intermittently

I have an early 2011 macbook pro, 15".  For over two years now, the SD card reader and the USB ports have been working intermittently... sort of.  The card reader /sometimes/ works.  The USB mouse almost always works but a USB headset that works on other computers stopped working completely on the macbook at the same time as the card reader.  I've since been having USB drives "eject" on me without my doing it.
Of course, these things began soon after the Apple Care ran out so I have just been living with it but it's been driving me crazy.
I tried canned air to no avail and even installed a fresh copy of Mavericks a few months ago in case it was a software/driver issue.  I don't know what else to try.  Any ideas?  One of the reasons I have a macbook pro is for photography, so this kind of *****.
Incidentally, the laptop was not dropped or anything like that.  No ideas or dogs or rough household members to do something to it without my knowledge, and I have been quite careful with this thing... so I don't think it would be a loose connection.  I do leave it sleeping a lot of the time when not in use...?

Hi there! I tried loading the module manually, but no success. Inserting an SD (once booted) doesn't make a difference, and nothing shows at dmesg (it does when there is a card at boot).
It seems to be a BIOS error, that somehow doesn't show up in fedora.
Anyway, I have an external card reader that works like charms, so by the moment I'll wait until the bug is solved. I've seen it has been reported, under Ubuntu.

  • Small CF card reader that works with the iPad Camera Kit?

I'm looking for a small (not much bigger than a CF card) CF Card reader that works with the iPad Camera kit (USB piece) - Anyone know of one?
All the ones I see people suggesting are big and bulky (made for a desktop). I know there are many smaller ones, but that the iPad camera kit doesn't work with everyone. Anyone know one that works with it?

My set up, quite compact for travel, this is a no brand version but I have seen other ones branded Integra or something similar.

The sd card reader has worked fine up until today.
It's not working anymore. Device manager shows it's disabled.
I tried to enable it but it says Windows can't enable it. I tried uninstalling and rebooting.
The computer found the device and reinstalled it but it's still disabled and won't work.
Any ideas what might be wrong? It's running Vista by the way.
    Thanks!

The only download shown under SD is Toshiba SD Memory Utilities. Would that be it?
I called Toshiba and they said it's a software problem and it is covered by the warranty. The lady told me to do a system restore and restore it to a point when the card reader was working. I tried that and guess what?
It won't restore. It says something is wrong with my files and it can't restore. That's probably not a good thing right? She said to call back if that didn't work but my 2 year old daughter isn't cooperating so I'll have to call back at nap time.
