Cache Bridge CS6
I get this error message when I open Bridge CS6, a problem has arisen. Can not read cache. Try empty cache buffer settings to correct the problem. I have tried this several times but the message will not disappear.
Hope someone can help me, Sten

I have problem with adobe bridge cs6. Every time I open it Bridge tells me to Purge Cache. I have CS6 on two computers and it works fine on one of them. I have tried to reinstall it without succeeding to fix the problem. Does anyone have the same problem and a solution to it?
"Bridge encountered a problem and is unable to read the cache. Please try purging the central cache in Cache Preferences to correct the situation."You must have a Mac. Try this.
Quit Bridge, from user library (NOT system and root library) preferences folder find and delete the com.adobe.bridge5.plist file manual. Do this also in same user library caches folder (Caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6) and inhere find and the folder called 'cache' and drag it to the trash.
restart Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences, then try again. -
Bridge CC cache not compatible with bridge CS6
Starting the Photoshop CC adventure. First install was Bridge. First test was to see if the Bridge CC cache is compatible with Bridge CS6 cache. First result is NO.
Test method:
1. Set the Bridge CC cache location to the same folder I use for CS6, which contains 10+ gigs of thumbs for my library.
2. Navigated Bridge CC to a sub-folder with about 30 images, see Bridge CC re-do the thumb extractions.
3. Close Bridge CC, launch Bridge CS6, navigate to the same sub-folder, see Bridge CS6 re-do the thumb extractions.
4. Close Bridge CS6, launch Bridge CC, still pointing to the same sub-folder, see it re-do thumb extractions again.
5. Repeat steps 3&4, always with same result, a redundant re-generation of thumbs.
Conclusion:
The actual thumbnail files in the cache are the same. But something happens in the index files (data/store) to make each version think it does not have thumbnails, so it re-generates them. IOW, when Bridge CC looks at the cache last used by Bridge CS6 it says "I have not been here, must re-cache", and visa-versa.
Solution:
Must let Bridge CC have its own separate cache, so the two versions don't walk over each other. Must let Bridge CC re-cache everything, which for me (and most users I assume) will be a long and time consuming process.
Not much surprise here. The same was true for CS5 vs. CS6.Not much surprise here. The same was true for CS5 vs. CS6.
Then it also should not be a surprise for you that this behavior already started in the Filebrowser (Bridge predecessor that came with CS1 and by far the most stable and fast cache ever in the history of Bridge) and has not changed since. Nor is it likely it will chance in the future.
Hence my advice to not use Bridge for long term DAM because you need to recache the lot every new version... -
Bridge CS6 cache problem causes freeze
MacPro early 2008, 10 mb RAM, Apple OSX 10.7.3, CS5 already installed.
CS6 Beta was working fine until today.
Now when I open Bridge CS6 I get "Bridge encountered a problem and is unable to read the cache. Please try purging the central cache in Cache Preferences to correct the situation." I then try to purge the cache, but nothing happens and Bridge freezes.
Worse, I cannot use my keyboard at all or perform any mouse click actions if Bridge is the active window. I cannot close Bridge. What I can do is alt/tab to another window, and then Force Close Bridge.
I have tried restarting the MacPro but this does not solve the problem.
The problem started earlier today after I re-edited a nef which I had previously edited in ACR 6. I cancelled all the previous edits first.
Also, yesterday I installed Little Snitch, which I have now uninstalled.
There are no CrashReporter logs for the freezing problem. How is your disk free space? When I loaded Bridge CS6 the default option was for 100% preview. That takes a lot of time and space to build. Can occupy gigs of space.
I reset thumbnails to embedded. Much smaller and faster and for me works just fine. -
Bridge CS6 constantly re-caching?
In Bridge CS6 (64bit on Windows 7) I noticed that each time I visit a folder I see "activity" in the lower left corner of the window. I see the spinning circle, and reports that tumbnails and previews are being extracted.
This happens on folders that have been previously visited and fully cached. In fact, it happens every time you return to the Bridge window after using a different window (Explorer, Browser, etc.), even though Bridge was left pointing at the same folder. If you use Bridge to open a file in Photoshop and then return to Bridge, re-caching occurs.
So I did some testing and found the cause. It appears that Bridge will constantly re-cache layered tif files. Flat tif files, DNG files, CR2 files, jpegs are not re-cached. Strangely, layered PSD files are not re-cached either. Only layered tif files. And more strangely, not all layered tif files, but most. I haven't figured out that pattern yet. Re-caching of layered tif files occurs regardless of whether they are 8bit or 16bit, compressed or not compressed.
This is a little bothersome when you have folders with a large number of layered tif files. The constant re-caching process can take a lot of time, and is using up CPU and I/O bandwidth for no apparent reason. It's generating the same cache thumbnails over and over, both the 1024 and 256 versions.
I can't find any setting within Bridge that controls this (make it stop). So, questions are:
1. Why is this? Is it a feature or a bug?
2. Any way to make it stop?
3. Can others verify it happens on their system (Windows or Mac)?I suspect it may be unintentional, but short of being a real bug.
If it worked before in CS5 it well might be qualified as a bug. Anyway, since you discovered this behavior you should report it as bug
Personally I only use tiff for saving in ACR when needed for other applications that can't handle DNG and PSD very well.
Having a bunch of tiffs for this purpose (did not try create layer sin them) enabling and disabling tiff support in Camera Raw prefs starts the caching on my machine for those files. So be prepared on recaching (although not going on, just until finished) when switching the support on and off!
When it comes to layers I only use PSD, in fact, I save every file as PSD as basis for archive. Not saying Tiff is disappearing but it is not a format as popular as it used to be in the early days, especially when it comes to layers
And if you have enabled tiff support and open them in ACR with choosing the option to open as Smart Object they can be saved in a layered file as PSD. As long as they are a Smart Object they can get back to ACR -
When opening Bridge (CS6) I get the following message: "Bridge encountered a problem and is unable to read the cache. Please try purging the central cache in Cache Preferences to correct the situation" I tried and after selecting purge cache it does not allow me to select OK. Also Bridge keeps saying "Building Criteria" with the spinning wheel and nothing happens. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. Please help:)
Maybe a Preferences reset can help:
Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Bridge preferences file, including display, Adobe Photo Downloader, performance, and file-handling options.
Restoring preferences returns settings to their defaults and can often correct unusual application behavior.
Press and hold the Ctrl key (Windows) or the Option key (Mac OS) while starting Adobe Bridge.
In the Reset Settings dialog box, select one or more of the following options:
Reset Preferences
Returns preferences to their factory defaults. Some labels and ratings may be lost. Adobe Bridge creates a new preferences file when it starts.
Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache
Purging the thumbnail cache can help if Adobe Bridge is not displaying thumbnails properly. Adobe Bridge re-creates the thumbnail cache when it starts.
Reset Standard Workspaces
Returns Adobe predefined workspaces to their factory default configurations.
Click OK, or click Cancel to open Adobe Bridge without resetting preferences. -
Bridge CS6 Cache and Freezing Issues
I downloaded Bridge CS6 and I have not been able to use it yet. I am on a MacBook Pro running 10.7.4 and every time I launch Bridge I get the following error:
Bridge encountered a problem and is unable to read the cache. Please try purging the central cache in Cache Preferences to correct the situation.
When I try to purge the cache Bridge freezes up. If I don't try and purge the cache I am unable to navigate to any folders on my computer and it just hangs. I eventually have to force quit to get out of it. So far Bridge CS6 has been completely unusable.
Please help.
Thanks.When I go to ~Library/Caches/ there is a folder for com.adobe.bridge5 but there isn't one for com.adobe.bridge6
Your in the wrong folder. Follow the path you have discovered yourself using the pref settings Curt suggested
~library/caches/Adobe/Bridge CS6 and inhere should be 2 files:
Adobe Bridge Plug-in Cache
and the folder called Cache. Inhere should be 4 folders called '254', '1024', 'data' and 'full'
All those folders carry the content of the respective quality of the thumbs and preview as well as 100 % cache and Bridge database.
Any way, Since you have not used Bridge you have no relevant amount of cache and I would suggest you quit both PS and Bridge and manual delete both the items (plug in and folder called cache at the end of the Bridge CS6 path mentioned above.
(both files will refresh itself after a restart of Bridge).
To be on the save side also visit in same user library the folder Preferences and look for the file called "com.adobe.bridge5.plist" (yes it is Bridge 5 that comes with CS6, all Adobe apps have their own version number and they are presented in the same Suite version. CS6 has PS version 13 and Bridge version 5 )
also drag this file to the trash.
Then hold down option key (alt) while starting Bridge and this should give you the option to reset the preferences as mentioned earlier in this thread.
Choose reset prefs and try again. -
My Master Collection CS6 was installed as administrator under Win 7 x64 Pro .
In CS5 I placed the cache on a non-boot drive.
In CS6, the only cache location options available to me from within Preferences are within my User folder on the boot drive. I am running as admininstrator, and have tried explicitly running as administrator to no effect.
How can I get the CS6 cache onto the drive of my choice?Note the current folder and the full path to the folder you want to use for the cache.
Run regedit.
Search for Bridge CS6.
Look down the associated keys and locate the folder noted above. Only one place needs changing.
Edit the folder name to read the new location.
Re-start Bridge and check the preferences show the new folder.
Delete the old cache folder (mine was 40+ gigabytes).
Leave Bridge running until it has finished regenerating the cache in the new location.
It might have been quicker to copy/move the old cache to the new location before re-starting Bridge after the location change, but I wasn't sure it would work correctly and was pleased to have a fresh, clean cache. -
Problem purging cache with Bridge CS6
When I open Bridge CS6, I get a message that the cache needs to be purged. When I initiate the purge, the program hangs, and I have to Force Quit. How can I resolve this?
You posted in the Photoshop forum by mistake. I've moved your post to the Bridge forum where you are more likely to get answers about Bridge issues.

When I change folders in Bridge CS6, I'm told there's a cache problem and I should purge the cache. I've purged this several times with no effect, restarting Beidge each time. Have also rebooted and done a safe boot. I'd like to reinstall but have no disk, as I originally downloaded the photoshop package when I bought it.
Help with the caching problem appreciated, also a pointer to a download site, which I can't find at adobe.com
Running a Mac Pro with OS 10.8.5, latest Bridge CS6 update.
Thanks,
--GeneThe computer is a Mac Pro, 100 GB RAM,
I don't believe that is a correct number, supposing you have a early 2009 model the max is 32 GB or you should have a special build 8-core actual but that can handle max 96 GB. In those days in dollars the equivalent of a very nice car…
Check again and also check your graphic card, the 2009 came with 512 MB ATI Radeon HD 4870 or NVIDIA GeForce.
512 MB VRAM is the minimum required
1.6 TB of disk in 4 drives.
Depending on your needs but to me this seems a very low number, I have a total of 7.5 TB on disk space in my MacPro 2012. Digital images are very space consuming especially if you use layers in PS.
HDDs are very cheap nowadays as is RAM compared to 10 years back.
The boot drive is 640 GB with 85 GB available.
This really is a very low number, roughly about 13 % free space left. The system, PS and other applications need space to write temporarily data to and 13 % is not that much left, especially if you have a lot of fragmentation going on.
What else do you need?
RAM and VRAM

White Balance Metadata not showing in Adobe Bridge CS6
Hi there, I am running Bridge CS6 on a Mac, and use Canon 5D and 5DMark 111 cameras. I have an issue with Bridge which I can not seem to figure out. Whether I shoot Raw or JPG and I am trying to do some testing for white balance, once I open the images in Bridge, in the little icon panel just below the folders/favourites panel etc I can see the f stop info, speed, metering , ISO etc, but the only icons I get for WB are if use auto - then I see AUTO. But when I do a manual WB like 'cloudy', 'tungsten', or 'shade' etc all I get are the symbols for 'Custom" or "Manual". How do I get the actual symbols for what type of WB i've chosen to show up?
I have purged the Cache - both in the individual folder and the overall Cache in preferences. I have checked that all the boxes are ticked in the preferences panel for the Metadata. So not sure what else to do.
Cheers DOk thanks for that, at least I wont be chasing my tail.
I did install the DNG converter 8.3 but I still NEF files as a NEF icon. Any clues to what I may not be doing right there? -
In Bridge CS6, my "Tools" tab is now missing the Image Processor option.
Hello!
Two glaring changes were made in my system all by itself. One is that in Bridge CS6, under the "Tools" tab, the "Image Processor" option is gone. All that's left is Batch Rename and Cache options. Does anyone know why this happened or how to restore this. Also, whenever I double click an image, it now goes directly to Photoshop as opposed to opening in Camera Raw first like it used to. All and any help is appeciated. Thank you!!!
EricCurt, thank you for your response. I did try that. I unchecked then
reselected all start up options and still nothing. Any other
suggestions? -
Adobe Bridge CS6 has stopped working - has issue been resolved?
Hello.
I am experiencing the above problem with a new install of CS6.
Has this issue been resolved?
CS6 Design and Web Premium installed on Win 7 pro 64 bit Dell Precision laptop. Error with Adobe Bridge cs6: "Adobe Bridge CS6 has stopped working", problem event name "APPCRASH". Error occurs when opening Bridge from Photoshop and other apps (Browse in Bridge) and directly from desktop or start menu. Also a cache directory is not being created under c:\user\<user>\appdata\roaming\adobe\bridge\. Holding ctrl key down and double clicking icon gets same message, cannot get at reset window.
Performed the following with no change: verified Bridge and full suite is on latest version (Bridge=5.0.2.4); created desktop icon directly from bridge.exe; verified application was installed and is starting with administrator privileges; verified latest display driver installed; performed complete uninstall of CS6, CC cleaner tool run, then full reinstall; Error under Event Viewer: faulting application: Bridge.exe and faulting module name: ntdll.dll; disabled UAC; tested memory for damage using MemTest86-good.
Thanks for any help you can provide.A follow up to the above.
There appears to be a number of possible causes for this type of error. In my case it was somewhat specific. I had a stand alone copy on this same machine previously of Adobe Photoshop CS2 (only) which was completely uninstalled prior to the installation of CS6. There is an issue with Bridge CS6 being installed on a machine that has Bridge CS2 on it. I wasn't aware of Bridge being present with my copy of Photoshop CS2 but apparently there were at least some components of Bridge CS2 left after the uninstall. The workaround that solved the issue for me was the creation of an empty folder:
C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Bridge CS2
For those of you who may have this situation.
Here is where I found the solution (sixth thread down):
Bridge CS6 won't open running on Win7 -
When using the camera downloader in Adobe Bridge CS6 with Nikon D5200 we are unable to see previews of the photos and it is very slow to download. The issue occurs under a the users rights, but not under admin level. This is a new issue.
Hi Jdentremont,
Lync client gets user photos by first querying the Address Book Web Query (ABWQ) service on the server, which is exposed through the Distribution List Expansion web service. The client receives
the image file and then copies it to the user's cache to avoid downloading the image each time it needs to be displayed. The attribute values returned from the query are also stored in the cached Address Book Service entry for the user. The Address Book Service
deletes all cached images every 24 hours, which means that it can take up to 24 hours for new user images to be updated in the cache on the server.
To troubleshoot your problem, please follow the steps below:
1. Navigate to
“X:\share\1-WebServices-1\ABfiles\000000000\000000000” folder. (ABS file share)
You should see some photo files in this folder as the following screenshot.
2. Delete all the files in this folder.
3. On test PC, delete local cache files.
%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\[email protected]
4. Sign-in Lync with the test account.
5. Go back to the ABS file share, check if there is any Photo file in the folder.
Best regards,
Eric

Quit Bridge and find your user library (by default hidden per OSX 10.7, for quick reveal use menu Go and press option, this brings the user library in view)
follow this path: user(your username) / library / preferences and inhere find and delete the file called "com.adobe.bridge5.plist". Then in same library go to the folder Caches / Adobe / Bridge CS6 and inhere delete both the plugin and the folder called cache.
All files will refresh itself with new and empty ones as per first install. Now again hold down option while restart Bridge and again choose reset preferences.
This provides you wit a new Bridge that needs to recache the files again so this will takes a bit of time and also your custom wishes for the preferences should be set again.
Also consider using the Apple Disk utility or a maintenance application like Cocktail and choose check and repair permissions.
Then consider the upgrade to the last week released 10.8.3 using the combo update that you can find under support on the apple website instead of using the app store to upgrade to 10.8.3.
