Caching Mode, groups, address book

GroupWise 2014 SP HP1
Hi,
we experience problemes with groups in caching mode: while they show up
correct with members in online mode and in WebAccess, they are empty in
caching mode.
I tried "Refresh", "Retrieve GW Address Book" and "Retrieve Entire Mailbox"
on the client side.
And I tried "Rebuild indexes", "Rebuild Database" and "Generate Remote
Downloadable Address Book Now" on the server side.
I also waited a few days, in case some automatic process plays a role,
friday to monday - the problem is still here.
The groups I need are eDirectory associated and access is limited by Access
Control. But I also tested this with GW-only groups and without Access
Control.
Thanks,
Mirko

Hi Laura,
I forgot to mention that - I have also tried this. But I thought this
setting should not be important if I manually do a "Retrieve GroupWise
Address Book"?
I did some more testing
* changed my lastname in eDirectory
* sychronized my user in GW Admin Console -> General/Contact Information
gets updated
* "Generate Remote Downloadable Address Book Now" on my post office
* Client in caching mode:
** "Retrieve GroupWise Address Book"
** "Refresh"
-> Last Name gets successfully updated in GW Client in caching mode
-> Groups are still empty
So I think it's a problem only with groups, the process for updating address
book in caching mode in general seems to work.
Thanks,
Mirko

  • Can I retrieve a group address book?

I accidentally deleted a group of addresses. Can I retrieve this group?

If you just deleted contacts in an address book, but not the address book itself, you can try the Recover/Restore option provided by [https://freeshell.de//~kaosmos/morecols-en.html MoreFunctionsForAddressBook]. Tested and working here.

  • Group address book

Is there any way to put a community address book on a server for everyone in an office to access? Is there any way to keep it separate from the contacts in their individual address books? We are all on Macs, but most don't have .Mac accounts.

What's funny: I can make a smart group, gathering some addresses. Then I cannot mail to this group. If I mark all entries in that smart group, and click on 'make group from selection', I get a regular group, which I -lo and behold- can send email to!

  • Strange Entourage/Address Book synching problem

    Hi,
Has anyone else seen this? I'm using the Sync Services preference within Entourage to synchronize the Entourage and Address Book contact lists. I've done this with several computers before, with no problems. But on this particular computer (running 10.4.11 and Office 2004) whenever a synch takes place, within the Address Book titles appear before the first name in all the contacts. The fields in Entourage are all correctly entered in. This would be just a small annoyance, except that of course subsequent iPhone/Address Book synchs result in everyone's title showing up on the iPhone as well.
I've made sure that the Title field is on the Address Book layout (and it is, beside Company, below First Name and Last Name), tried ditching the Address Book folder within Application Support, running the PocketMac SyncClean utility to clean out the Sync Services cache, deleting the Address Book completely and re-synching (multiple times), yet nothing works.
    Any ideas?

Since Entourage is not an Apple product, you'll get better response if you use a forum dedicated to Microsoft's Mac products such as <http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?sel=33607053> rather than an Apple forum.
Be sure to search the forum first in case someone has already had a similar question answered. You'll get your answer faster this way. Post your question in the forum if you don't find anything that helps you.

  • Bind Local Address Book to Server?

A priority for our firm, and a main reason we are setting ups an SLS, is to be able to use Group Address Books to share contacts across the Groups we would like to set up. The documentation says this is possible, but as I see in other posts, this doesn't actually appear to have been implemented yet. Has anyone noticed Page 11 of the Address Book Server Administration Manual, posted at Apple's SLS documentation page:
"To use Address Book Server on a client, you need to bind the client to Address Book Server. Before binding a client computer, make sure Address Book Server is running (see “Starting or Stopping Address Book Server” on page 15).
To bind Address Book on a client to Address Book Server:
1 Open Address Book on the client computer.
The only versions of the Address Book application that support using Address Book
Server are those in Mac OS X version 10.6. Earlier versions of Address Book don’t
support binding to Address Book Server.
2 Choose Address Book > Preferences, and then click Accounts.
    3 Click the Add button.
4 In the Add Account dialog, select Mac OS X Server as the Account Type.
5 Enter the user’s name and password. Enter the URL of the Address Book Server.
    6 Click Create.
An account is now added to the account list. The Address Book application now shows a new group with the user’s name and your server designated. Any groups in the shared address book are displayed below this via a disclosure triangle."
All of this sounds great: once "bound" to the server, manual appears to be saying that the local Address Book app will show the user's address book as well as any Group the user is a part of. Perfect. Only problem is that when I go to create an Address Book account with the type "Mac OS X Server", there is no such option under the pull down account type menu.
I have all the latest versions of everything on the server as well as client computers, and this option simply isn't there. Address Book Server is running, and there are no configuration choices that would appear to "turn on" this option or otherwise make it available to the client computers. Anybody have an explanation? Has Apple just not implemented this yet? If not, why Apple would put this in their current documentation? Am I missing a configuration setting of some type?

    Hi
Unfortunately for you the admin manuals are not that clear - what a surprise. It's not really your fault but you're taking the instructions too literally. By "Address Book Server" the manual means the Server the Address Book Service is running on. This would be whichever server is the Open Directory Master.
Preceeding the part you quoted is:
+"Address Book Server is integrated with Mac OS X Server’s foundation technologies. Address Book users are authenticated from Open Directory and Kerberos."+
This certainly implies an OD Master environment.
In a multiple server environment (Master/Replica or Connected Server) it's not clear if the Service can only be used/accessed on the OD Master.
To 'bind/join' clients to an OD Master (and in essence the Address Book Server) you use Directory Utility. In 10.6 client this is accessed via the Accounts tab. In 10.5 the application exists as standalone in the Utilities folder. In 10.4 the application is in the same place but is known as Directory Access. As far as the manual says only Address Book in 10.6 seems to be supported?
For LDAP Services to work as they should DNS Services must be configured correctly and resolving on both pointers. For the best experience clients must be using the Server for their DNS (assuming the Server is the only Server on the network) or a suitable DNS Server that can resolve the Server properly.
I personally don't think there is a Group Address Book feature available. If the iCal service is anything to go by you're really talking about individual address books which have then been delegated read/write access to other users in the LDAP node. If you consider carefully what it is you want there is no reason why you can't offer a 'group-type' address book with what's available?

  • Cannot restore address book

I recently reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Tiger on my computer. Before doing this I copied my home folder to a spare hard drive. Now I'm in the process of reloading and importing everything. I'm not able to find a way to restore my address book. "Import" and "Revert to Address Book Backup" in the File menu can't locate this data. I can sucessfully spotlight search any single contact on the backed up data volume so I know that the data is there but spotlight doesn't tell me where. I did manage to find "Address Book Person Data" in Library/caches/com.apple.Address Book/Metadata and I think that's where it is but dont know how to import it into my address book. Any suggestions?

No, that should have been sufficient. Make sure that you have it in the right folder - your home directory/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. Also you could check to see if either of the other files is significantly larger - if so, move the .data file to the Desktop and rename the larger one to .data.

  • Address Book server -- any way to make an account "read-only"?

So, they'd like to incorporate Address Book Server here to work as a "group" address book.
But they only want to give certain people read-write access to the group book and read-only address to others.
As far as I know, there's no way to do this (like you could with an iCal "delegate" for comparison.)
But I was thinking -- is there some way to just set an AB Server account read-only in general?
If so, I was thinking I could set up two AB Server accounts -- the "read-write" account for some users and then script/sync the values in that account nightly to a "read-only" account.
But I can't figure out if there's a way to marke an AB server account read-only to begin with.
    Any suggestions along these lines?
    Thanks!

I'd imagine this is a question that only Apple can answer, as it would require some "behind the scenes" tinkering with Terminal etc., if it were at all possible.
Its definitely something they should think about including in a future release, as there seem to be quite a few people here who want a shared calendar, plus therefore the ability to pick who can EDIT vs. just read the info on it.
    Cheers!

  • New unwanted behavior - Mail.app causes Address Book.app to open

    Hi all,
For a long time now I've had an email rule that formats email items a special way if the email is from a person in a certain address book group. It has worked great.
Lately, (sorry, but I don't know specifically when this started -- it has been at least a few weeks) when I get an email from someone in that special group, Address Book starts up. This did not used to happen, and I don't want it to happen as it is useless and distracting.
Does anyone know what might have changed in recent updates to cause this behavior change? Alternatively, and better, does anyone have any ideas on how to make it stop without abandoning my formating rule?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Do your rules involve the use of AppleScript, or any Mail plug-ins, or something like that?

  • Multiuser Address Book?

    Hi,
does anybody know how to set up a multiuser/group address book? We are a small company using the 10.5.1 Server and would like to one address book which is located on the server.
As I see there is only a sharing possibility when using .mac isn't it?
    Kind regards, Carlo

Hi All- I haven't look at the links posted below yet, But I'm also interested in Sharing address books using 10.5.2 Server- Anyone point us in the right direction? I see some discussion on the web about using Directory server (or services? ) to accomplish this, but no instruction. Got Ical Server working from Now up to date, and want to migrate away from now contact, if that's relevant. Thanks!

  • Random 'groups' in my address book won't autofill in Mail

I am on a MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.5 with all software updates.
I have been using the Address Book's group for some time.  In the last months I have had problems where created groups will not auto fill in any of the blank address fields in Mail.  It will recognize the group (in the same matter it does for a successful entry) and in some instances some contacts will auto fill.  Generally when you select the group and hit 'enter' the line will remain blank.

    Greetings,
Backup your computer Address Book: http://www.tuaw.com/2008/07/09/mac-101-back-up-address-book-ical-iphone-before-m obileme/
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Language & Text > Formats > Region. Region should be set to the country of your choice. Do not have it set to "Custom".
    Try:
    Quit all open Applications
Go to Apple > System Preferences > iCloud > Sign Out (if you are using it)
    SafeBoot your computer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
While in SafeBoot remove the following to the trash:
Macintosh HD > Library > Caches (contents of this folder, not the folder itself)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.AddressBook (remove any and all files with this in the title)
Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost > com.apple.AddressBook (remove any and all files with this in the title)
Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.AddressBook (remove any and all files with this in the title)NOTE: To get to "Home > Library" in Lion: Click anywhere on the desktop and then click on the "Go" menu at the top of the computer screen while holding down the "option" key on the keyboard.  You will see "Library" in the menu.
Restart the computer normally to take yourself out of SafeBoot
Open the Address Book -- See if you can use the Birthday field now.
Assuming the field works and you use iCloud Go to Apple > System Preferences > iCloud > Sign In
If the same issue occurs reply back.
    Hope that helps!

  • Calendar tracking not consistant when meetings booked by delegate in cached mode

    Situation:
    Exchange 2010 Sp3
Outlook 2010 SP1 Cached mode, with delegate having full access to manager's mailbox with auto mapping on.
Whe the delaget books a meeting in the managers callander.  Some of the response are not relected in the tracking on the meeting.  The patern is that everybody who responded quickly are not reflected, but at some point the responses start being
    reflected in the tracking.
I think that the issue is that when some of the responses start coming in, the meeting has not yet been synced to the owners mailbox.  When the reponse comes in, there is no meeting object to update, so it gets ignored. When the calendar oject
finally gets synced the response that come in from that point , are processed and get reflected in the tracking.  this is particularly obvious for meeting rooms, since our rooms are setup to auto-accept and they response within seconds.
I have tried changing the Cache setting, to not cache shared data, this way when the delegate works in the Manager's calender the change are happening directly in the Mailbox.  With this configuration all the meeting response are getting processed.
I can use this workaround for some people but we do have some admins that want to cache the manager's mailbox/Calendar for viewing offline so I also need to find a solution for them.
    Thanks
    Marc

It is the default behavior, but it also causes many undesired issues.  For instance, consider the following:
If I have a small mailbox, but I have several large shared mailboxes, when I create a profile, those shared mailboxes are added to my OST.  In your estimation, this is all well-and-good.  However, I work for a bank - we have many slow WAN connections
(one for each branch), and a large number of users across these connections.  If you download one large shared mailbox to your workstation, you will swamp the network connection for a very long period (we've had WAN outages caused by shared mailboxes
that lasted most of a day).  Add to this the fact that our tellers do not use the same computer daily, each time they go to a different computer, the cache needs to be totally refreshed.
I have C*Os in this company who have many admins responsible for their Calendar and Inbox.  These admins aren't always able to communicate before scheduling meetings.  Let's consider your situation - the C*O calendar is updated in real time when
changes are made.  Those up-dates are still not replicated real time to the delegates, so even in your best case, they will still not be up to date when they schedule meetings.  (And considering the current operation, they are as much as 15 minutes
behind if they all cache the C*O mailbox.)
We have many shared mailboxes in our organization.  Some of these have many users who have full access.  We have found several issues if these people cache the shared mailbox, such as:
Many times, these users will open an item to work on it, which marks the message as read so others will by-pass it.  We had one group who had six responses to a message because six separate users opened the message and responded.  After all, the
message showed as unread in their cache.
Folders created in the shared mailbox aren't visible to the other users, and may never appear (we've tried forcing folder updates as well as forced replication and nothing causes these new folders to appear).
Users commonly move items to sub-folders within the mailbox.  With cache enabled, we've had ticket opened because one person moved a message to their folder, but someone else moved it to their folder.  Since all were working from cache, the last
cache to update won this contest.
And finally, we have found that while Outlook does a good job of ensuring the cache of the primary mailbox is up-to-date, it doesn't update the shared mailboxes as readily if the workstation is busy, which for our exec admins is most of the time.
So the cache for the admins of our senior execs (which as I said above are multiple) was rarely updated on a timely basis.  And all of these admins are working on high-speed connections to the server, so it's not a WAN issue in these instances.
Turning off "Download shared folders" fixed all of these issues at the minor expense of taking longer to open items in the secondary mailboxes.

  • Using a smart address group from Address Book

I might be asking sth already been answered but I cant find it, so sorry,  but how do you send an email to a group of contacts who have been grouped by a Smart Group in Address Book? Address Book's help says
If you don’t have a group of addresses, create one.
Creating groups or foldersChoose File > Send Updates.
In the dialog that appears, select the group or groups you want to notify.
Type a subject title and a message, and then click Send.
The trouble is that Send Updates is grey-ed out - see below!
What? How am I meant to follow those instructions if the menu option is grey-ed out?
    Helen.

    Helen,
In your original question, your screen shot shows that the active application is AddressBook, and you are trying to use its File menu. The option you discuss is for sending updates of your own address card, not for sending out group emails. In other words, if you change your own contact details in AddressBook, you can send the new contact details out using this menu option. I hope that this is what you intended, rather than simply sending out an email to a [Smart] group as others have discussed.
However, I cannot get the 'Send Updates' option in the File menu to be disabled in the way you have managed. I note that you are still in the edit mode on the current contact in the screen shot (the Edit button has blue text instead of black). I also note that 'Save' in the File menu is enabled, implying that you have a currently unsaved change somewhere. Maybe one of these issues is preventing you sending out your new contact details.
I expect by now that you have sorted this out yourself. If not, have you tried closing AddressBook and re-opening to resolve the unsaved issue?

  • Lost Address Book groups

    Hello
I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion.
When I open Address Book 6.1, the groups I had created have no one in them.
How do I restore these groups?
    Thanks

I see what you mean.  Thanks!
The only problem is that I remembered after I posted my question that I had exported all the contacts to a v-Card and deleted them and then re-imported them.  This was supposed to fix the problem I was having of iCloud not syncing my iPod Touch with my MacBook.
So is there any way to restore the groups after this?
    Thanks for your help.
FYI, what I should have done instead of deleting and re-installing all my contacts was to set the iPod to Airplane Mode, switched off the Contacts sync, rebooted my iPod and also my computer and then set iCloud to sync Contacts and turned off Airplane mode.

  • Is there a way of persuading iCloud to sync the smart groups I have in address book on my Mac

I have a small number of smart groups in address book on my iMac. but these do not sync through iCloud to my Macbook or iPod touch.  Everythin else syncs even ordinary groups, but not the smart groups.  Is there a way of persuading iCloud to do it?  I can fully sync my Macbook contacts by exporting an archive from the iMac and then comying and importing this to the Macbook.  But this is old technology.
