Caching, SSD's, improving RAM preview and rendering in After Effects CC

I've read a few posts and looked at some of the optimising After Effects for performance posts but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on settings for helping getting the best performance out of After Effects for my setup. I'm like to be able to explore more advanced effects like Trapcode and things like that but for them to preview and render as quickly as I can... as I'm sure we all do.
I have a 12 Core Mac Pro 2012 with 64GB RAM, a SSD that I use just for the system, a 4TH HDD for all my files and projects and 2 new SSD's that I installed today that I thought I would use as a cache disk and and a disk for my renders.
I decided this based on these guidelines that I found:
My Media and disk cache settings:
If I set the Conformed media disk as another disk separate from my cache is that good for rendering and previews?
My memory and multiprocessing details are as follows:
Installed RAM: 64.00 GB
Current RAM Usage: 3.26 GB
Allowed RAM Usage: 48.00 GB
Process ID
Application Name
Min Needed Memory
Max Usable Memory
Max Allowed Memory
Current Memory
Current Priority
548
After Effects
0.40
64.00
48.00
3.26
1 - High
Video preview, I'm not entirely sure what this is for, can anyone explain please?
I've only just discovered the Cache Work Area in background option shown here:
http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-after-effects-cs6/global-performance-cache/
That's going to help massively!
Just how much faster would things run with a new graphics card installed? Say a Nvidia Quadro K5000 for Mac? Is a GPU it worth investing in?
Current I just have this setup:
ATI Radeon HD 5770:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 5770
  Type: GPU
  Bus: PCIe
  Slot: Slot-1
  PCIe Lane Width: x16
  VRAM (Total): 1024 MB
  Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
  Device ID: 0x68b8
  Revision ID: 0x0000
  ROM Revision: 113-C0160C-155
  EFI Driver Version: 01.00.436
LED Cinema Display:
  Display Type: LCD
  Resolution: 2560 x 1440
  Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
  Main Display: Yes
  Mirror: Off
  Online: Yes
  Rotation: Supported
  Connection Type: DisplayPort
So, any tips that people think might help me speed things up and get the best out of After Effects CC would be very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

  • RAM previewing and rendering not working correctly

    Hi,
Today I was just about finished editing a video on CS6 and then when I'm about to add the last effect and render it it stuffs up on me:(. What happens is that while RAM previewing at some point during the loading of the preview it will stop loading, It will then proceed to play the ram preview on loop and when I press a button to stop it a small box pops up in the centre of my screen and the ram preview bar to show what has loaded (the one which shows green for parts that are loaded and blue for cached) turns black and sometimes other parts of after effects turn black. This has happened before and I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling After Effects about 6 times. I would do that this time though I would like to know the cause of it and any possible fixes as it is quite irritating. Another thing that may be happening is the RAM usage is slowly filling as I render. This has happened before on my laptop and I did not manage to fix it though it was not related to the first issue that time. The last time when it happened on my laptop the RAM usage eventually filled up to 100% and it would no longer render. I am not sure if it is happening this time as it is still currently rendering though I will update the thread if it does. Finally my render is going very slowly, I am not sure if this issue is realted to any of the above or if it is just the effects I am using though. My memory and multiprocessing settings are using 6 cores of 7 with 2 GB of ram allocated to each with multiprocessing on. My ram allocated for other programs is 6GB. To fix these Issues so far I have tried clearing the cache, purging the memory and image cache, restarting  my computer and reinstalling after effects. My specs are:
    i7 4770k non overclocked
    GTX 780
    G.Skill Ripjaws Z 2133mhz 32GB
    Samsung 840 pro
    Seagate Barracuda
    MSI Z87-G45
    H100i cooler
    Any reply is appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    Sam

How much experience do you have with AE? Ram preview can be lengthened by adjusting the resolution of the composition window, different parts of the project can be previewed using the work area, and preview length and render time are both a function of composition frame size. Complex, memory intensive effects like particle systems will reduce the render time and the length of a ram preview. Without knowing the details of your composition it's hard to say if you are running into a bug, running out of resources, or experiencing normal behavior.

  • After Effects CC Crashing Itself and Computer During Previews and Rendering

After several attempts to render a video in After Effects CC (have also tried on CS6) and it crashing either itself or my entire computer, I have uninstalled and reinstalled all of my Adobe applications deleting the preferences while I was at it. After reinstall, I am still coming across the same problem. Quicktime is installed as well. The problem occurs at different times when I'm scrubbing a video, RAM previewing, and rendering. I have tried rendering with "Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously" on and off. It has worked on Draft Settings for rendering before, but now that isn't even working. The information for my system and other needed info is below:
After Effects CC 12.2.1.5 & (latest update, I believe)
    Source Footage: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC
    Classic 3D
    Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit
    CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K @ 3.50 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti   (Driver Version: 9.18.13.3523)
    RAM: 16.0 GB
Disk Drives (2): 120 GB Kingston HyperX 3K SSD,  1TB Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003-9YN16
    Cache Settings:
Memory and Multiprocessing Preferences: (I have tried numerous setups)
    Render Settings:
    Output Module Settings:

Well everything worked on my other computer, though slower. Since it seems to be the hardware causing the issues, could someone point me in the right direction as to which component is causing it? My log file is at the link below:

  • Strange previews and renders appearing with blue rectangle glitch

I am getting these strange artifacts on my previews and renders in PP Cs6. The footage is proresHQ. I have attempting adjusting every setting I know and doing a clean reinstall of PP. Any ideas?

    Hi NoxPhoenix,
Have you updated your GPU drivers lately? Try that.

  • Clips rendered in After Effects appear blown out in Color.

720p DVCPRO 23.98 project from FCP has graphics rendered in After Effects (same codec) in sequence.
They appear fine in the FCP project. All the properties of the graphic clips match the same settings as the footage that was shot.
Once in COLOR the clips rendered from AE appear blown-out, washed-out...
Any ideas why or how to correct this?
    thanks!

There is also a problem with Big-Endian-ness being flip-flopped with dpx files incompatible with some external graphics processing software. This has the feel of some sort of scaling misinterpretation.
Shake was broken (in Quicktime) for anything above 8-bit for a long time before that finally got fixed about 6 months ago. All of a sudden (after the FCS2 introduction and Quicktime update) all we got out after a seemingly normal render (showed up fine in Preview) was a big noiseball of something that looked vaguely like it might be the outline of the original media. Its curious that FCP previews it "okay"... did you indicate the recompressing software? Compressor?

  • Streaching occuring when rendering from After Effects to Premiere

    Hello,
I am working on a short film that includes a short section with special effects. I exported the scenes into After Effects CS5 and set the sequence to 1280 by 720. (same as the Premiere sequence) After I finished working on the effects in After Effects I rendered it to bring it back into Premiere. But, when I brought it back into Premiere the video was streatched out. Any assistance would be great.
    Thanks
    Alex

Instead of rendering out of Ae, why not simply Dynamically Link
your composition into your Premiere project?
File > Adobe Dynamic Link > Import After Effects Composition
Create and link to After Effects compositions with Dynamic Link

  • Quick time won't play mp4 rendered in After Effects.

Since I upgrade to Mavericks i've been unable to play mp4 videos rendered using After Effects cs5. After rendering i get a file icon with the quicktime logo instead if the usual thumbnail with the play button; first indication that the clip might not play. Then when i try to play it i get the error message: "The document “MVI_7772.mp4” could not be opened. This media may be damaged." What do i do?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks3e

I would not expect CS5 apps to be very compatible with Mavericks. You could try to render the file out in After Effects as a Quicktime MOV file using H264 and see if that works for you. If it does you can change the extension from mov to mp4.

  • QuickTime Files rendered from After Effects won't open

I currently have QuickTime version 7.6. Files that I download from elsewhere or that I view in the FireFox plugin online play just fine. However, files rendered from After Effects CS3 (I prefer MPEG-4 codec, but I just tried and Sorenson 3 won't do it either) will not play in FireFox's plugin and they won't open QuickTime when I double-click them in Explorer. They will only open in the QT player if I already have the player open. Otherwise, I have to open them in VLC. I much prefer the QT player and I don't want to have to open it first to view my files. Any thoughts on what's going wrong here? This has only started in the past month or so.
Other people can view the files just fine, it's just my computer. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times now and have updated my video drivers, to no avail. I've also installed Avast! Antivirus and run a boot-time virus scan, but no lick there either.
    Error signature from Windows:
    EventType : BEX P1 : QuickTimePlayer.exe P2 : 7.60.92.0
    P3 : 496279cc P4 : QuickTimePlayer.exe P5 : 7.60.92.0 P6 : 496279cc
    P7 : 0000130d P8 : c0000409 P9 : 00000000

I wouldn't have a clue from here on, it could be anything. The key would be, if you could recall what changes were made to the computer during the time the problem surfaced. I'm not familiar with After Effects C3S but I'd disable it from loading at start-up if it does, and try QT again, but that's just a pure guess, based on the EventType error numbers, that are somewhat familiar with memory load

  • Preview and rendered video has distortion

    Hi,
I have scoured this forum but can't seem to find my exact problem. I am getting very jerky playback (which I have seen in other posts) but mine is getting this odd green distortion too. The distorion seems to happen the exact same place every time in the preview and the rendered video. Last week this problem was occuring so I went and updated Quicktime and deleted my media cache in Premiere. Something seemed to help... for a while. Now the problem is back and worse than ever.
Below is a screen shot of what I mean... Any ideas would be greating appreciated.

    Thank you Ann & Jim!
First, let me say you got me working. It was the video driver.
I did think of this before, but I went to Device Manager (Win7) and checked for driver updates there. There were none. But becuase you mentioned it, I pushed a little harder by going to Lenovo's site and downloading the latest drivers from there, not knowing if it's what I already have... It worked like a champ! Video looks pristine again.
Thank you, and please pardon my bone-headedness.
Just for giggles, I'm including my system specs in case it can help the next guy somehow.

  • Frame counters during RAM preview and playback

It is my understanding that  I should be able to view the number
of the currently processing frame during the course of a RAM preview
in both the timeline counter (in frame display mode) and in the info panel.
This is not working for me, and I would like to see if I am missing something.
Here is the status of the counters with a RAM preview in progress.
The only updating frame counter is at the bottom of the composition window,
and it would not be visible while processing a full-screen RAM preview.
    RAM PREVIEW IN PROGRESS
This is the status of the counters during playback of the RAM preview.
The playback CTI is at about frame 90 of 912, but the counters in both the
composition window and timeline are frozen at zero, while the info panel
is frozen at the last frame number of the timeline (the last frame rendered).
    RAM PLAYBACK IN PROGRESS
During spacebar playback, only the composition window counter displays
the current frame.  The timeline counter is frozen at the frame number where
the CTI was parked when playback began (in this case, from frame 0).
The info panel only displays the framerate of the playback.
    STANDARD PREVIEW PLAYBACK
If I stop either a RAM or Standard preview playback using the spacebar
the timeline counter will update to the CTI frame, but if playback resumes
the counter stays frozen where the CTI was parked when resuming playback.
I am experiencing this behavior using frames, timecode, ft+frames, and using
    "From Current Time" RAM previews.
Please tell me I'm doing something wrong.

    The question I posed was:
    2. Is there a way to display the number of  the frame that is currently
being processed during the course of a RAM preview?
    The answer was:
    >Info panel + timeline display set to frames.
Your tip to disable "Show Rendering Progress In Info Panel And Flowchart"
is very helpful.  By unchecking the option, I do get a count of the currently
rendering frame during RAM preview... thanks for that!
It does seem a bit counter-intuitive to de-select this option in order to
view what might be the most the pertinent information (the current frame)
instead of "whizzing minutiae", but it does confirm I was missing something.
As for Mylenium's answer "timeline display set to frames", I can't seem
to get a running count in the timeline display under any rendering
or playback circumstance. I am a long-time Premiere user, and I was
expecting the timeline counter in AE to behave in a similar manner by
updating the current time during playback.
Is it the proper function for the timeline display to only update when parked?
If yes, I can get used to it.  Again, I just want to know if I am missing something.
    thanks
