CAF - ARIS - BPP

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could explain to me the differences / interactions between these three:
ARIS - Composite Application Framework - Business Process Platform.
Do they work together ? Are they different versions of one another? With CAF Core can I connect to something created in ARIS ? What is the link with BPP ?
Thanks in advance,
Micol

Hi Micol,
ARIS is the modeling tool for non-interactive (XI BPM) scenarios as of now for Netweaver. Currently there is no link between ARIS models and CAF Core/CAF GP. The models created in ARIS generates BPEL which can't be used in CAF as of now. It can only be imported into XI BPM.
In CAF you can develop the service layer (CAF GP) and process layer (CAF GP) to develop composite applications but not much so-called "modeling" activity can't be done as of now on those as you have to develop the actual technical artifacts in CAF rather than the model.
BPP is not out yet. It'll come maybe by end of this year of early next year. That'll be first application platform from SAP where all SAP applications can be modeled, developed, configured and deployed from an unified environment. And it's supposed to be 100% SOA based. So that you can integrated non-SAP applications also with ease and can really pick and choose which SAP component to use and which 3rd party components to use. Maybe there we can see a more robust and unified modeling environment which will help us to really "model" business applications (composites), which is the job of a BPX and develop the technical artifacts at the later phase of the development cycle, which is the job of a technical expert.
Thanks,
Dipankar

• How does BPP (business process platform ) impacts SOA practice in SAP

hello All,
what is you take on impact of  BPP on SOA  practice in SAP .

Theo,
Like Ravi says: SAP positions Aris for all bp modelling  activities and the underlying applications for all bp execution activities.
You only mention CAF and XI as types of these underlying applications but you do not mention "normal" applications like SAP R/3 (which handles human workflow by "NetWeaver workflow"). I think NetWeaver workflow (bp execution) will be managed from Aris in the future as well (bp modelling). This also answers you second question: workflow on the purchase process in R/3 is managed by NetWeaver workflow on R/3 (execution level). You don't need a CAF development for that.
The link between CAF guided procedures and NetWeaver workflow in an integrated business process / scenario is handled by XI-BPM.
1. If you want to support a business proces or scenario by application logic, I think you first look at the functionality of (a) existing application(s), if necessary linked together by XI-BPM. If existing applications do not gather the right information you jump to CAF (picking up running services via XI-BPM).
2. NetWeaver workflow (see before).
3. I think you miss NetWeaver workflow here and BI for Business Activity Monitoring. BAM is a coop by Aris and BI in the future I think.
Just some thought. What do you think?

• CAF GP - SAP XI BPM

Hello *,
I'm new to CAF and I'd like to implement a pricing process tool within this framework.
The process has just the following process steps / services (data flow in brackets):
- Taking new defined products and data from SAP PLM (SAP PLM <-> SAP XI <-> Application Service wraps Web Service of XI)
- Show a UI to define prices for the new products
- Saving new defined prices to SAP SD (Application Service wraps Web Service of XI <-> XI <-> SAP SD)
Up to know XI is just part of the process because of monitoring aspects and CAF GP for modeling the process.
But as I read about BPM in SAP XI I'm not sure if CAF GP is the right and only choice for process modeling.
So my questions are:
1. When do I have to use CAF GP and when the BPM component of SAP XI?
2. Can I use both in collaboration? Or do I even have to?
3. What are the differences (advantages/disadvantages) of CAF GP / SAP XI BPM?
Could anyone give me some advice?
Thanks in advance...
Regards,
Joschi

Hi Divya,
First of all I can't really accept the statement <b>"Modeling in GP"</b>. Guided Procedure is NOT a tool for modeling to be used by a BPX according to my opinion. Developing a process in GP requires more technical knowledge than functional/business knowledge. The example of modeling environment/tool is ARIS/Websphere Business Modeler , etc - where the BPX can "model" a business process purely based on business knowledge without having any so-called technical knowledge. And in turn this model can be converted into the technical artifacts to be modified or developed by the technical experts. The example of this kind of business modeling to implementation is ARIS modeling -> XI ccBPM.  But in GP there is no such tool as of now for modeling. What we do in the GP design time is only development.
Now coming to your question - you can use BPM engine as your GP runtime engine. But that still doesn't solve our first issue. Modeling of GP process is still missing. And one more interesting observation is if you go through the <a href="https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/706005a3-3bd6-2910-91ae-a2016239bdcf">Netweaver PI 7.1 presentation</a> you can find there are lot of similarities between PI 7.1 and existing CAF Guided Procedure. Previously XI-BPM was usually used for non-interactive processes (with background message exchange) and Guided Procedure used for more interactive processes (with UI). But in PI 7.1 a new human task action has been added in ccBPM based on BPEL 2.0 specification. That means now XI-BPM can also support interactive processes as well. So doesn't this sound a kind of parallel technology to CAF GP? My question is if these two are getting really parallel one has to die out and which's that one? And if CAF-GP going to stay what's the modeling environment for the same?
Thanks,

• Not able to view data in Aria People search Org Chart

Hi,
I have uploaded my data into aria_tmp_people, aria_people_a & aria_people_b.
While doing the search from Aria poeple, the uploaded data is not displaying in org chart.
Your help is highly appreciated.
Thanks
Aneesh

Hi Aneesh,
First be more clear about Aria Application. As Aria, is been related to an hrms part of an organization carrying the people infomation and it has some separate features too.
But in your prespective i couldnt able to understand what do you want to do with that packeged application.
Since you want to customize the aria application according to your organization needs means, First collect all your necessary organization information that is needed(like tables etc.). Then substitute those (i.e) your organization tables in the appropriate places in the form of query.
Please dont use the same Aria people table, as the Oracle may framed according to their employee information. Nearly Aria application has 200 supporting objects. If you want to use the same objects means whether u r going to creating nearly 200 supporting objects..It is not worth at all.
Please be more clear in your requirement that, what you are doing, and then raise the question. Be more prepared with your tables along with datas, and let give your reply once you were been prepared with your organization details table.
As there are more peoples in the forums to help you other than me.

Is it possible to export to Excel from Aria People Search.
I would like to output the Org Chart (built in) and the Tree (I created) to an Excel file.
Does anyone know how to do this?

Hi,
If you are using 10g, then OLE2 is supported. However, it will be executed in the App Server Machine.
If you want to do the operation in the Client machine (as how it was done in the Client / Server), you need to use Client_OLE (Which is part of WebUtil).
Look at
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/htdocs/webutil/webutil.htm
for more details on WebUtil.

• Error message "This program cannot display the webpage when uploading images to Cafe Press

I have had a Café Press shop for five years and except for sometimes being slow, no problems uploading images. Now, suddenly for 3 days I get the message "This program cannot display the webpage
Most likely causes:
• You are not connected to the Internet.
• The website is encountering problems.
• There might be a typing error in the address.
What you can try:
Check your Internet connection. Try visiting another website to make sure you are connected.
Retype the address."
I got the messsage about half way through the uploading of an image. People suggested using "firefox" instead of IE so I now get a similar error message from Firefox. I signed in, clicked on the image I wanted to upload and hit "upload" and get message as follows:
Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at members.cafepress.com.
* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
None of this makes sense because I WAS connected to the internet (obviously) or I wouldn't have been able to sign in, go to my media basket, browse for the image and click "upload" and watch as the progress bar showed percentage of upload such as 20%, etc. and even went to 100% at times before giving me the error message. Plus I couldn't make a typing error since I wasn't typing anything but uploading an image. Any suggestions?
Whatever your suggestion, I need step by step instructions as I am totally computer illiterate. I don't even know what a "proxy" is and don't know if I have a "firewall" as the message suggests. I have "Comodo" security and am using Windows XP.
I contacted CP which was no help at all. All they did was tell me to clear my cache which I do after every session. Thanks

• How to log Exceptions raised in CAF Application Services

Hi All,
When there is an Exception rasing in CAF Application Service custom method implementation what are the steps need to follow for send that exception details to log files & where those log files will be generated i.e either in server, local system, etc.
If we use following 2 different lines please explain me where that trace is going to written:
1) System.out.println(e);
2) e.printStackTrace();
Thanks in Advance,
Uday.

Hi Uday,
Try this (in my case I'm using that in Background CO that implements IGPBackgroundCallableObject ):
         public static Location logger =
              Location.getLocation(<yourClass>.class);
Catch block:
              } catch (GPInvocationException e) {
                   throw new GPTechnicalCallableObjectException(
                        logger,
                        resourceAccessor,
                        "ERROR_PARAMETERS",
                        e);
              } catch (GPEngineException e) {
                   throw new GPTechnicalCallableObjectException(
                        logger,
                        resourceAccessor,
                        e.getMessage(),
                        e);
Reward points if it's helpful.

Hi
This problem may be because of version mismatch,
why dont you install the latest version of NWDS 7.0.7,
and try doing the same,
I think it will help,

• CAF & MIDI Loops

I thought I had at least a basic understanding of both CAF and MIDI loops in Jam Packs, but then I started looking closer and am totally confused. If I drag a MIDI loop into Logic, I see what I would expect, a MIDI file and a generator. If I look that same file up in the Finder, it has a CAF extension and the Get Info says it opens with the Apple Loop Utility. If I open it in the the Apple Loop Utility and look at the Transients panel, I see an audio waveform that sounds just like the MIDI file plus the generator. Huh? What's going on?

The CAF format is a container which can store music in other formats, including MIDI.

• Getting Logic to ignore .caf files in the loop browser?

I don't even know if this is possible. I've installed Logic 7 on my laptop that also has GB '08. I want to keep GB, but I don't want all of those .caf files in my Logic loop browser. Is there a way to get rid of them from the browser without moving or deleting them so I can still use them in GB?

• Can STP 3 Only Index .caf Loops?

I have tried to Index .aif and .mp3 loops but they don't appear to work in the Search fields. (They can be saved as Favorites).
Am I correct in thinking that only .caf loops can be indexed in STP 3?

I tried to index the audio files using the Setup button at the top right of the Browser. It opens a window where you can navigate to your files and then click "Index".
Works perfectly with .caf files.
Pretends to work with all others but when you use the Search window they are not there.
I have a large number of non-.caf audio files which I would love to convert to .caf if that were possible.
Some say you just change the .aif to .caf but that doesn't fool STP.
Have got a ton of messing about done today!

                    uri: A reference, either to absolute or relative, to the content's

                    contentType: The MIME type for the tile's content. For Flex tiles,

                    Libraries (RSLs) in that they separate code from an application

                    applications, see "Modular applications overview" in the Flex

There's not an actual space in the error, it just looks that way when I pasted the text into the post.
For some additional information, I've tried going through the tutorial here (http://www.youtube.com/ADEPDevelopers#p/c/DF68F4464D4EF4E0/4/klNspQvfVMc) and here (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/enterpriseplatform/10.0/AEPDeveloperGuide/WS989a722fbb254cbe-6 f13dcd01304cbb1ac4-8000.html), however, neither one goes through the full steps of adding the Service to the axml and cxml files which is where I'm probably having trouble.
I've also looked at the StockMosaicService sample included with ADEP and tried mimicking it but with no luck. I had expected the ADEP tooling in Flash Builder to handle all this for me but it doesn't appear to be working properly now.

I do not think I missed anything installing NW CE 7.1, but this error makes me think that some plug-in was erroneously left out of the install.
Incidentally, I can continue onward and build an app (this is obviously a tutorial), but when I try to deploy I get the following error:
The deployment of the archive failed with an exception!

Please check the error log for further informations.
Again, this looks like I am missing some components.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
TB

Further developments:  As you may note from the error message, DS is looking for com.sap.ide.metamodel.core.services.eclipse in both the C: and the E: drive at the same time.  In fact, this file exists in the E: drive subdirectory listed, so I obviously have an error with two drive designations being concatenated.  Does anyone know how I can change the lookup directory for this dependency (or any dependency)?
Thanks,
TB

• Problem with Aris and Solution Manager

Hi,
I'm trying to synchronize Aris and SAP Solution Manager.
I'm doing installation and configuration following Administration Guide
chap. 7 from Aris for Netweaver guide, but, I have a problem when I
try to transfer projects from Aris to SolMan.
In the main ARIS menu from ARIS Business Architecture for SAP NetWeaver>
Aris Network>LOCAL>Synchronization>Maingroup, a SAPLogon screen appears
to logon to SolMan system, ask for Client, User and PWD.
I put the same user/pwd that I use to logon to SolMan, but ARIS cannot
connect to, an error message appears "User or password incorrect".
Does anyone have idea about this problem??
Thanks

Mariana,
try changing your password to all CAPS in Solman.
regards,
Jason
