Cairo 1.12.6-1 in testing make gnome-shell background black

Dear all,
If I upgrade cairo from 1.12.2-3/extra to 1.12.6-1/testing, background of gnome-shell overview mode will become completely black. This will also make the background of my conky be black, which is really frustrating. All the other package such as gnome-shell, xf86-video-intel, and xorg-server are from testing. The "AccelMethod" of my intel card is set to "uxa". I try to search this on google but no one seems to have same problem as mine. Is there anybody knowing how to work it around? Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Zhengyu

Hi xzy3186,
I am also having trouble with Cairo 1.12.4 and 1.12.6 in testing, not exactly the same symptoms as you, but it's probably related.  GIMP can no longer take screenshots (they turn out completely black), and Audacious's Winamp interface is not correctly drawn.  I'm going to do a git bisect on the Cairo repository and try to find the bad commit.  IMO Cairo 1.12.6 should not be migrated to [extra] until this is resolved.
Edit: I also tried setting "NoAccel" in my xorg.conf (intel driver) with no effect.

  • Trying to make GNOME 3 a bit like GNOME 2

Hello guys. I'm a GNOME fanatic but I must admit that GNOME 3 has concerned me. At first I didn't like it at all. Then I got used to it a little and after that I reminded myself that even with GNOME 2 I certainly did NOT used any of the default theme/features etc. So I need to give some time to GNOME 3 for the devs to make mods, themes etc.
Right now 3 things concern me:
    1. I'm using Cairo Dock but I found out that I cannot drag and drop apps from the Activities menu to the dock. Any ideas how to do this? (I'm really embarassed to admit it, but after 4 years on Linux I still don't know another way to add apps to cairo dock :-/ )
    2. Is there anyway to make the system tray that appears on the down-right corner move up like GNOME 2 used to?
    3. At last, are there any widgets for the bar? I like the upper bar full or else I find it boring and useless.
    Thanks in advance!

Sloshy wrote:What I do is I just use the built-in dock that comes with GNOME 3 on the Activities overlay. If I press the Activities Key (Windows/Super/Meta/whatever) and move my mouse to the left, it's just like a regular dock. It supports favorites of course, right-clicking, and in the future it'll get zeitgeist jumplist support! To switch apps I just use Alt+Tab and Alt+` (or whatever key's above Tab for you; it's relative). I don't even need a dock anymore, and this behavior becomes second-nature really quickly. I don't know how to add an application to cairo-dock, but I think the devs will make a workaround for it eventually. Until then, try it without a dock and see if you can get used to it
I have applications that do NOT work properly with Mutter/gnome-Shell. VMware guests that are hardware accelerated perform badly. Autodesk Maya doesn't work properly... Mutter is much slower than compiz, and is not easily tweakable without knowledge of javascript and CSS . - that is brutal!
I have over 200 gestures that i use on my desktop (easystroke), little to almost none of which are transferable to Gnome-Shell. Compiz is a much better way to go for tablet use. I don't require remembering any hotkeys, at all - for any purpose on my desktop - why would i want to learn all of gnome-shell's??? I wouldn't, that's a waste of my time and my workflow is much faster. I only use the keyboard to type text, or for hotkeys in applications that i use, where it makes sense too.
I can add/remove workspaces WITHOUT leaving my even desktop in cairo-dock. (in fact i can do anything gnome-shell does without leaving my desktop). to switch to open applications i draw a circle on the screen - it enables the scale plugin in compiz ~ the scale plugin in GnomeShell is inferior. Scale in compiz can focus on an application (handy when you have many applications open, it zooms in on the app without switching to it - when you have a dozen apps open it's awesome), i can also close applications in scale by using a right-click. Not only that but compiz' scale plugin will show me all applications relative to their own workspace. (and it is customizable).
Compiz also performs as a tiling window manager - gnome-shell's new "snap plugin" - is in compiz, and has been for a quite while. Not only that compiz' is better. it has more functionality and is again - totally customizable! going back to the tiling aspect - if i have 2 windows open that i would like to have each snap to the sides / splitting them across the desktop - i draw a "box" on my screen. not only that, but this works with 4 applications open too.
You don't need a dock, because gnome-shell has it's own way of doing things - i PREFER a dock, anytime i am required to leave my desktop to achieve something, whether it is seraching for a file, or looking/opening an appliction -  i consider that to be bad UI design...and trying to compare "activities" to cairo-dock is laughable. activities is a somewhat feature-less attempt at replacing other opensource projects that already exist and are much better....and yes, i am sure Cairo-dock will be fixed.

    1. Select Partition4: Bootcamp. You should see advanced Options.
    2. Click Format and convert the partition to NTFS.
    3. Click Next.

  • How do I make image backgrounds black and white while maintaining color in the foreground objects?

I have a close up close-up image of an orchid with blurred background.  I am trying to make the background black and white while maintaining the foreground color on the petals, buds and stems.  Any ideas?

Use the Blank & White Brick and either brush the effect onto the background or brush is away from the foreground.  "Detect Edges" will help control the edge of the mask.
You might be interested in knowing that you can brush on/away masks of different strengths, and thus produce effects in between 0% and 100%.
Search the forum -- there are several good posts detailing how to create this effect.

  • How do I make a page background have effects?

trying to make my page background something like silver or
mirror-like or something besides a simple color. Thanks!!

You are trying to nail jelly to a tree. No matter how you
    size that image,
someone will come to your page with either a smaller or a
    larger browser
    viewport.
Make the background image no larger than the maximum weight
    budget that you
can allow for your page's background, remembering that the
    target weight for
an initial page load is about 60-100K (figured on the maximum
    download time
for an impatient viewer). That weight would include the
    weight of the code
on the page PLUS ALL DEPENDENT FILES.

FC/e supports only a few 'standards': DV (as from miniDV cams), HDV (from miniDV devices), AVCHD (from most devices) and with a little trick, described on my website AVCHD-light (720p, as from many compact-stills) ..
    done.
some Flips are supported by iMovie, which you can abuse as a converter tool.
but 'non video standard' (=read 'video' as 'in TV') formats, resolutions and codecs ...
    a) manual conversion = less convenient
    b) loss of 'quality', e.g. when you blow-up tiny 480x320/15fps into video..
FC/e is FC/pros lil' brother.. meant for a more.. adult workflow..
if you like to wrestle with multi-formats, stay with Windows/Magix/..

MacOs=convenience, with a chance of getting restricted

I created a new collection and put all of my same photos in them as a previous collection, then I changed them to black and white and both collections changed. How do I keep the first collection colour and make the second collection black and white.

For the second collection, choose the option to make virtual copies. Then you can turn the virtual copies to black & white, leaving the first collection in color. If you want file copies of the B & W images you can export copies.

how do i make a transparent background in Photoshop Elements 13

    Open the picture file
Use one of the selection tools to select the foreground
Place the selection on its own layer (Layer>New>Layer via copy or CTRL+J) - this will be Layer 1
    Delete the background layer
If you want to save it, use a file format which supports transparency, e.g.PNG

  • How to make a white background Transparent

I would like to to select the blocks and enclosed data to copy and paste in a poster, leaving out the white background.  In other words make the white background transparent.
This is just a plain low res jpg.
This seems like it would be pretty easy but not for me.  Is there a tutorial that could guide me through this?
Thank you for any guidance you can give me.

I'm probably not being clear about what I'm trying to do.  Here's a typical poster.  I use the magnetic lasso to select an image, copy and paste it resulting in this.
This time it's to be a team picture with small head shots of each player, action photos in the background, similar to this.  I can do all that but I wanted the tournament chart to lay on top of the background with just the boxes and enclosed info showing.  I know I can use the magnetic lasso or the poly lasso but I don't have enough patience for that.

Select the white background with Magic Wand tool.  Hit Delete.  Transparent background is denoted by the checkerboard pattern on your document.

  • How to make a trasnparent background in Motion

I am just making a Lower Third and I want to be able to bring it into FCP and place it on top of my existing timeline. I dont want to export FCP to Motion because I already chroma keyed my "stuff" in FCP. How do I make a transparent background for Motion? Hm!! Any other suggestions would be nice too !

I think you may be mis-interpreting what the blend mode does.
If you apply the screen blend mode to the fire clip in Motion without anything below it, and view transparent in the viewer, you'll notice that the blacks in the fire clip don't disappear. It's waiting to blend it's values with a clip below it. If no clip is below it, then nothing visual happens. If you place a colored solid below, then you'll see the effect of the blend mode.
FCP handles composite modes differently. If you do the same thing in FCP, the blacks WILL disappear from the fire clip even though there is nothing below it. Perhaps that is why they are called "composite" modes in FCP, and "blend" modes in Motion.
Finally, a Motion clip is like a QT clip. It can contain, video, audio, tc, and transparency info. A blend mode is not technically transparency information. Besides, in the example that you give me, the blend is between the fire and the text clip. Not between the motion project file and FCP clip in the timeline.
How ever the Motion project looks in Motion is how it'll look in FCP (with the exception of Motion Blur).

  • Why gnome-shell makes network connection by itself on startup?

I have a very *clean* gnome-shell desktop environment installed. Randomly I use 'ss -utp' to see that application other than my web browser is making network connection to the outside world, I found something.
After a reboot and logged in to Gnome-shell, there are several DNS lookups and connection is established to "proxy02.gnome.org" at 209.132.180.168 and than a connection is established to "ec2-54-246-211-38.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com" at 54.246.211.38. That site turns out to be "Mozilla Location Service". Yes I think I know what it is. It's seems to be the Gnome-shell's integrated location service.
If it's it, there is a big problem. I disabled it long long time ago just after it appeared on the head bar... So how can gnome shell decide to make a network connection after I explicitly told it not to? Though I believe it's really not about to do some bad things, but the reason why I switched to Linux for years is just to be able to get a more trustable OS on my stuff.
Sorry about the complaint. I chose to use it and they said "THERE IS NO WARRANTY FOR THE PROGRAM" in the GPL. I just want to know Is there is a "MAGIC" setting or config file for me to "REALLY" disable it.
    Thanks!
