Cakewalk or MIDI

Hello
I just installed iLife`09, and was wondering if GarageBand now would import Cakewalk 9 files. I know that GB`07 couldn't, and there were no 3rd parties programs to do that either.
Other thing that bugs me is that I couldn`t import a MIDI file to a GB project. Can I now?
I have zillions of CW projects, will I really have to go Logic to import them?

importing Cakewalk files has never been mentioned as a feature, MIDI files, however, have always been supported, just drop one into the GB timeline.

  • Moving midi events to match realtime

    Hello,
I am debating buying Logic Pro7. Here is what my recording project will require.
    1. I already have saved midi tracks with a human feel (percussion and background strings) played to a click track at a constant tempo.
    2. I want to now record on an Acoustic piano with PianoDisc installed.
    3. I want to play and record my piano playing tracks with rubato.
    4. I want the original accampaniment to play back with my new piano recording enslaved by my new rubato. ( My new piano track will not be interpreted as either before or behind the beat , but rather DETERMINE the beat.
    5. I have Finale files of exactly the notes I'm going to play on the piano.
    6. Cakewalk's "In Concert" and MakeMusic's "Smart Music" both can do real-time rubato enslaving to accompanying tracks in a performance envirnment.
    7. Can Logic Pro do this in a recording envirnment. (I don't really need to hear the background tracks while playing the piano, I just need to superimpose the rubato on the drums and background strings.
    Please help.

    Hi Curtis,
Sounds like you're asking two separate questions. (1) Shoud you get Logic and (2) Can you get tempo matching to work.
The answer to both is yes!
In Logic, tempo matching is called Groove Templates and they work pretty well, with some provisos that apply to all software. The thing about rubato is that there will be times when you do want to play away from the beat. In those cases, you don't want the drum track to followthe piano slavishly because it will sound terrible. In other cases, the goove is the thing that you want all instruments to copy. Logic can do both, though the former is moe work than the latter.
Groove Template works by defining a section of music (a region in Logic terms) that Logic will analyse to determine the underlying beat, including quite subtle variations. It's especially good for drum tracks but works fine on instruments with sharp attack, such as keyboards. The manual talks about it working best for short phrases but I've successfully used Groove Template on 16 bar phrases and longer (I did it on part of The Rite of Spring and it was sensational).
So, buy the software, try it out and come back with specific questions.

  • Mapping MIDI sounds in GB3

I record drum tracks via my Roland V-Drums and Cakewalk/Sonar. I save them as .mid files then drag them on to my GB3 app for playback. Does anyone know how to change the instrument assignments in GB3? Not all the sounds from my drum kit are audible and some don't seem to be mapped correctly - trigger the wrong instrument. Is there a way to see/tweak the instrument sounds in GB3? Can this be done via Apple's MIDI Mgr utility? I've tried working w/ a couple of the preset GB3 drum kits(rock, pop kits) but still not sounding right. Would be great if I could create my own GarageBand drum kit that maps 1:1 w/ the instrumentation in my Roland TD-20. Any tips/suggestions? Anyone using GB3 to record V-Drums? And is there a version of GB that works w/ an old G3 iMac DV?
    Thanks!

so wait. I can go to a web site that offers
soundfonts(midi sounds right?) and somehow use them
    within GB?
    That's what I said. Yes.

  • A modern MIDI - Please reach new Cubase's standards

From the Steinberg site, regarding the 3.1 update (which by the way is free). I think those features would be GREATLY needed by us Logic (and midi instruments) users.
"For existing Cubase SX3 customers, the update to 3.1 brings major new developments in the area of hardware integration. The advanced Studio Connections functionality, which links Cubase SX to MIDI hardware supporting this standard, has been further upgraded to include full audio integration. External instruments and effects supported by Studio Connections Recall and Audio now behave like virtual instruments and effect plug-ins, offering not only mixing directly within Cubase SX, but also one-step audio mixdown and "freezing" of the connected audio hardware. Any hardware, which does not support Studio Connections, can now also be integrated directly into the VST mixer in Cubase SX 3.1 as External Instruments or External FX including full MIDI control and latency compensation."

What would be alot better for me personally (concerning hardware) would be to finish the SoundDiver port for OS X
    Agreed.
Yamaha's 'MIDI Plugin' system for it's synths has been around for some time now, but the only sequencer to adopt it (that I know of) has been Cakewalk/Sonar.
I guess it was just a matter of course that it be introduced into Cubase too.
It doesn't provide anything which can't be done in Logic's Environment, (or in SoundDiver,
    b if
the device is supported), but it does mean that the user has a ready-made solution.

  • Exporting Lyrics with Midi FIle(s)

    Hello forum,
I was asked to post here also, just in case.
In Logic Express, is it possible to import/type lyrics and sync them to a specific "Midi Melody Track" then, export the midi file (type 1) with the lyrics embedded?
If not sure, can any of you fellow musicians test this for me? After saving the midi file, you can load in "QMidi" from http://www.mixagesoftware.com/
All help and feedback is greatly appreciated,
    Thank you

    Hello musicspirit
    Yes, you can.
Sonar an all Cakewalk products have this feature and it works very nice.
Select the melody track, open the score editor which will show just the melody track notes only, copy or paste the lyrics in the lyrics window and hyphenate for words and syllables. Done!
Sibelius has it also, but I heard it's not the greatest and then Cubase, but I wanted to go with Logic if at all possible.
    Thank for the reply

  • Processing MIDI in non-realtime (Transform Window)

The only thing I miss from my PC days & Cakewalk (years ago) is the CAL scripting language, which allows the user to process MIDI (in non-realtime) in practically any way imaginable.
The Transform Window seems pretty close, but I'm running into a lot of brick walls now (after three years of Logic use) that I'm finally trying to recreate some of the functionality I remember having in CAL.
Particularly, one can't seem to make parameters affect each other? In other words, I can't select a range of MIDI notes (say a snare rush of 16th notes) and apply a velocity crescendo on them based in time (ie, the first note in the measure gets a velocity of 0, the sixteenth gets a velocity of 127, everything in between is scaled appropriately)
Or, I would love to be able to select a measure of (again, let's say a snare rush of 16ths) notes, and change the start position exponentially based on it's current start position (creating an AphexTwinnian log/exp snare rush)
I can do this stuff in Max, but it's such a headache to export MIDI, process, reimport, etc etc ...
I would love to be able to do non-realtime MIDI programming like this without leaving Logic. Is it possible? looking at the manual makes me think it isn't, but I thought I'd ask.

Ok, a bit of an update.
Essentially, I'm just trying to make log/exp drum rushes, which means I'm trying to get the "Exponent" operator to work as expected with the position value, which it does not.
I've figured out how to apply changes in time (by using the position inside operator) like say taking a constant velocity rush and making it fade in or out, and I can use the same principle to move things in time (by adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing the position value) but there's no way to apply exponential events to time in the Transform Window, unless I'm very much mistaken.
It almost seems as though the way which the exponent operator affects the position value is a bug (gasp)... almost any values but very very low ones (ie .00001) move everything hundreds of bars either forward or backwards (depending on negative or positive values) and do not scale the start times exponentially regardless ...
or am i just not figuring out how using the exponent operator in conjunction with position is supposed to work? this is not covered in the manual.
the 'crescendo' operator is baffling as well. One would expect that using a starting value of "0 0 0 0" would be the base position in your selected region, but actually "-9 0 0 0" is ... and it won't work exponentially, regardless.
I just wish there was a way to open a little text window, and type in an equation to apply to the selected midi notes. that would be amazing.
    ie "note(position)=note(position)^1.4" or some such

  • Can GB08 recognize Specific Midi keyboard voices (Roland XP-10)

    Hello all,
After searching the posts, I think I know the answer, but would just like to verify (set-up listed below):
Can GB08 recognize my specific keyboard (Roland XP-10) and its unique voices? I can play and recieve midi properly, but am limited to GB's voices. I specifically miss my fiddle...I guess I could simply play into a real instrument track through the line-in, but that kind of defeats the whole midi idea.
    Christoph wrote in another post:
"No, GB doesn't know these synths, would be asking a bit too much. So you'll have to find the sounds using GB's internal synths or any external instruments (AUs or soundfonts) that you can find."
I have tried manipulating the instrument generator, but to no avail. I am still perusing the manual and discussions in hopes of finding a "duh" revelation, but any light you folks could share would be greatly appreciated. I am still trying to learn about AUs and soundfonts. I'm an old musician, but a GB newbie (was using cakewalk before).
    Thanks in advance,

  • How to address two vi's simultaneously over midi?

    hello board!
i'm trying to do a live jam over midi using cakewalk's um2g interface, the idea being to record the midi output of two instruments addressing, in this case, ivory and alchemy.
no matter what i try, setting one channel to receive on midi ch 1 and the other to receive on ch 2, both keyboards end up playing both synths.
    aaaaaarrrrgh
    can anyone help?
    thankz in advance
    byz

    Hi
You need to do three things:
    a) Set the two keyboards to transmit on different MIDI channels
    B) Set the two (record-enabled) Instrument channels to the appropriate MIDI channels
    C) In"Settings:Recording" choose 'auto demix by channel if multitrack recording'

  • Qosmio X500 - Midi not found in Windows 7 64bit

Ive just bought Cakewalk its not finding any midi output for Windows 7 64bit, in my Qosmio X500.
    Can anyone help?

    Hello
To be honest it would be interesting to know what Cakewalk is...
Even you think its related to Toshiba, I would contact the manufacture of Cakewalk.
First of all make sure your Cakewalk works properly and is configured properly. After this you can search for other answers.
By the way, newest Windows drivers can be downloaded from official Toshiba page.

  • Is there a way to import cakewalk INS definitions into garageband?

I have an Alesis QSR sound module, and want to import the sounds into garageband. I don't really know anything about midi, apart from hooking up a controller when I play out. I can download the instrument definitions as an INS file for cakewalk, but don't know how to import that into garageband, or if this is even supported. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi Patrick,
I am addressing the similar issue. "Getting data from huge XMLs into Hana."
Using Odata services can we handle huge data (i.e create schema/load into Hana) On-the-fly ?
    In my scenario,
I get a folder of different complex XML files which are to be loaded into Hana database.
Then I gotta transform & cleanse the data.
Can I use oData services to transform and cleanse the data ?
If so, how can I create oData services dynamically ?
    Any help is highly appreciated.

  • ITunes and Audio Midi settings for digital output sampling frequency

Most of my music is sampled at the CD standard of 44.1 kHz, but some is 48 kHz.
I have Audio Midi set to output 48 kHz with 24-bit depth.
I've been told that to avoid having iTunes up-sample when playing 44.1 kHz music, that I need to quit iTunes, manually reset the setting in Audio Midi to the lower, matching, number, and then re-start iTunes.
This strikes me as odd. Is it true? If so, is there any less cumbersome way to deal with this?

Wheat I agree entirely with your last sentiments.
I had a similar problem to 'Luckydog'.
I have a Roland HP3 digital piano which itself is a standalone musical instrument (synthesiser if you like) but also has midi in/out and audio in/out.
I made the mistake of connecting my Mac PBG4/GB2 setup to my HP3 via the Edirol UM2 USB interface, expecting to hear my piano's sounds recorded in GB2. Of course GB2 did not record anything when I selected real instrument track beacuse the Roland, I think, was sending audio not midi data to GB2. What I have since realised is that to record a real instrument whether it be a digital piano (or acoustic piano via microphone) is to set the GB2 input to audio and feed the signal from the Roland via its audio outputs to my Mac via audio interface. (I have a USB Grifin iMic).
Of course I could use the Roland purely as a midi controler and select a software instrument track in GB2, but I also have a Radium 49 simple midi controller keyboard for that.
One thing that does puzzle me though is, that if I hook up my Roland via the UM2 to a WindowsXP laptop running an app. called Cakewalk Music Creator, the Roland sounds are recorded in the timeline and can be viewed, edited and printed as conventional music scores(great for composers!!) Also the Roland track recorded in CMC can be played back through the Roland's on-board sound generator.
In this scenario there is no audio feed between the Roland and the PC only two way midi via the UM2 USB/midi interface.
This is seems to be a fundamental difference between GB2 and the Cakewalk product. Can you explain what's going on hear Wheat?.
Sorrry such a long post !!

  • NEWBIE PLEASE HELP..!! Problem Opening a MIDI file

    Hi all.
Does anyone have any advice on this strange problem..??? On the Logic Pro 8 Manual it says that : +"When you open a MIDI file in Logic Pro 8, software instrument tracks are automatically created for each MIDI track"+
My problem is that when I open a MIDI file, (Standard MIDI file) some tracks get assigned to external MIDI instruments, others get assigned to Software instruments. I can't figure out how this might happen.
I really want to use the software instruments for each MIDI track, not the Quicktime Synthesizer...
    PLEASE HELP ME FIX THIS...!!!!
    Thanks

Well, the thing is that I only want Logic to automatically create the software instruments tracks (EXS, EXS24, Garageband sounds, etc) every time I open a MIDI file
As a matter of fact I have a Macbook with 10.4 OSX with Logic Pro 8 and this one DOES what it says in the manual (creating the W/W instrument tracks) I just open a MIDI file and the program does all the rest..it assigns a SW instrument for each track... However, I can't do that with my iMac....
This problem is really driving me insane ....I'm a switcher from Cakewalk SONAR and I really want to use Logic....Please Help..!!

  • MIDI files don't make any sound

I have problem with playing MIDI files (e.g. from Cakewalk program) on my Toshiba laptop. Files like .waw or .mp3 work normally, but .mid files in some programs (like Cakewalk or Winamp) seems to play, but there's no sound. Other programs (Windows Media Player) give an error message that the sound device is missing or is installed wrong. I can't find any volume adjustment to make sure if MIDI is muted. It seems there's none at my computer.
Is there a missing driver for MIDI files? Can I find somewhere any?
PC information: Toshiba satellite L630, Windows 7
Sound drivers: Conexant CX20671 SmartAudio HD and Inter(R) Display Audio

Which Satellite L630? See the label on the bottom.

    X-Fi Xtreme Audio
The entry-level model of the X-Fi series, the Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio, does not actually have the EMU20K chip but is a re-branded Audigy SE, using the same family of chips (CA006-WBTLF), and even the same drivers[6]. Thus, not only is all of the X-Fi related processing performed in software, but it also lacks basic hardware acceleration just the like SB Li've! 24 bit, the Audigy SE and other budget Soundblaster models. The X-Fi Xtreme Audio does not use the same drivers as the rest of the X-Fi family, some games do not recognize it as being "X-Fi capable hardware", and the device's hardware profile resembles that of older Li've! and Audigy cards. Furthermore, users have reported that it slows down some applications and games [7] [8] [9]. Thus, even if the card is marketed as part of the X-Fi line, it does not belong to it technically, just like the Audigy SE doesn't technically belong to the Sound Blaster Audigy series. The card is not marketed as supporting the "X-Fi Gaming Mode" (but is still marketed as X-Fi ), and there are no official implicit or explicit statements regarding its having hardware acceleration or not.

You want any of those features then you're going to get a real card, not a renamed/rebadged POS.

  • External MIDI gear - SoundDiver, Unisyn, what?

I have several bits of external MIDI gear:
    Korg 05R/W, Roland XV-88, Alesis DM-5, Alesis Quadraverb2, Roland GT-6, Line6 Bass Pod Pro, Roland GM-70 ... and more.
I'm currently converting to Logic Express 7 from Cakewalk's Sonar Producer 6, I've had enough of Windows. I'm thinking of upgrading to Logic Studio, but getting the patch names for all the patch banks on the external MIDI gear seems rather difficult (not that it was particularly easy with Sonar).
I downloaded SoundDiver, but it seems to require some "Emagic XSKey" I don't have. I've seen discussion that states Logic Studio eliminated the need for the USB dongle, replacing it with a serial number key. I'm assuming this does NOT work with SoundDiver (right?).
So what are the options, besides manually typing in every patch name?
Is there some way to get SoundDiver working? I'll purchase it if necessary/available.
    Is MOTU's UniSyn an option?
Any other Mac editor/librarian apps out there?
I'd also like to have alternative banks of patches I've downloaded and created over the years available to send/receive from Logic to certain boxes. Sonar had a reasonably painless way of doing that.
    Any help/advice is certainly appreciated.

Yes, you need an XSkey for SoundDiver, and I don't see this changing as SD has been dropped.
You can use copy/paste to get your names into Logic multi-instruments. If you can source patch lists on the internet (which are often quite common), it's not hard to use a text editor to do some basic formatting and just paste the names in. This is for presets only, of course.
So SD is not an option, as you cannot purchase it, and you don't have an XSkey (which all LP7 owners have).
You're best bet is probably looking for other sysex software. As long as they can export patch names to the clipboard, you'll be able to use them to get patch names from your instruments and paste them into Logic.
