"Calculate all sizes" checkbox not working in Lion

Even when I have checked "Calculate all sizes" in View options, Lion does not show the sizes of many files and folders.  The size information is also missing when I do a command-I.  Has anyone figured out how to make Lion show file sizes?

On my Lion install (10.7.1), I don't see that checkbox at all in the view options window.  Anybody know why?
EDIT: Oops, I just realized that checkbox (and several others) are only visible in list view, not column view.

  • Calculate all sizes not saving

I clicked View>Show View Options in Finder, and clicked "calculate all sizes"
However, when I restart, the option comes unchecked.
Any way to force it to save this?
    Thanks!

The problem seems to have resolved itself.
I don't know how, or why, but it did.

  • Get Info versus Calculate All Sizes

When I go to Finder > View Options and set Calculate All Sizes to "on" for all windows, the GB Free is posted under the hard drive icon (e.g. 94.04 GB, 24.45 GB free). If that value changes for any reason (download of files, whatever), it doesn't immediately update the values under the icon. If I do a Get Info, however, it has updated immediately.
Is there a way to force Get Info and Calculate to remain in synchronization?

that option does not display the HD sizes so its useless when copying between drives, no way to determing how much space is left with out loking for a new window which is backwards,

  • View Options - Calculate All Sizes

For some reason, I am not getting any sizes for folders inside one particular folder even though I have calculate all sizes checked. It is not a speed issue. It works on other folders, but I have one folder that it just fails in.
If I create a totally new folder in another area I get sizes. If I add folders and drag items into these new folders I get sizes. If I drag folders from the non-calculating folder into the correctly working folder the newly added folder still does not calculate. But if I copy the contents of the non-calculating folders into newly created folder then it does calculate the sizes.
Also, if I copy the contents out of a non-calculating folder into a new folder and then copy them back, the folder starts calculating the size. So that is my workaround.
One note, all the folders that are not calculating were copied from a network drive (Novell network).
    Just a very odd bug.
Not sure how to report this bug. Any suggestions?

The funny thing is that I have an empty folder which size is impossible to calculate, either by the "calculate all sizes" in the view option or by the Infos window for that folder.
That might be a problem with old folders created in Tiger or before. For example, no way to get the size of any Adobe CS3 folder, but each document or folder size inside each InDesign or Photoshop folder is listed adequately. Stragely, the Illustrator folder works fine !
So, I've done a little experiment. I've created a new folder named "Adobe ind" and put all the content of the "Adobe InDesign" folder. The size came intantly... Than, I've put all the document back in the old folder and everything is OK.
    Tedious job, but it works,
I bought my first Macintosh, a Mac 128 Kb, in August 1984 (the 6th one sold in Switzerland). I must say Leopard is really fantastic. The best one since Mac OS 1.0.

  • I have iphone 4s and just bought an ebook for ibook, trouble is the font is so tiny I can't read it and the font sizer is not working? Please help!

Hi, I have the  iphone 4s and just bought an ebook for ibook, trouble is the font is so tiny I can't read it and the font sizer is not working? Please help!

    Hello Glittergirl68,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like the function to reseize the Font in an iBook is not functioning properly.
I recommend a few things here. First close all the apps that are running in the background:
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
From: iOS: Force an app to close
              http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5137
When you have done that, restart the phone, and try again.
If the issue persists, I would follow these steps from the article:
iOS: Troubleshooting apps purchased from the App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702
    2. Check for app updates
You can setup apps to update automatically in Settings > iTunes & App Store, but make sure that your apps are up to date:
Open the App Store and tap Updates. If updates are available, tap Update All.
If  prompted, enter your iTunes Store account information. App Store will then download and install the app updates.
Note: Some apps may require a Wi-Fi connection to update.
    3. Install another app from the App Store
If none of your user-installed apps will launch, there could be an issue with Apple ID authorization. Download and install an app that isn't already installed on your device to reset this information. You can also remove an app from your iOS device and download it again from the App Store or sync the app from your computer.Note: If you have installed apps using multiple Apple ID accounts, you may need to perform this step for each account.
    4. Restart the app
If the issue affects only a single app, try closing just that app.
    5. Restart your device
Turn the device off and on.
    6. Reinstall the affected app
Remove the app from your device and reinstall it:
Tap and hold any app icon on the Home Screen until the icons start to wiggle and show a small "x" in the top-right corner of the app.
Tap the "x" in the corner of the app you want to delete.
Tap Delete to remove the app and all of its data from your device.
    Press the Home button.
    Go to the App Store.
Search for the app and then download it again.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Adobe Photoshop CS5 is not working with Lion.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 is not working with Lion. It is totally non responsive to a point where i cannot work. all other CS5 programs seem to be running well so far. any advice? if no, then how do i revert back to Snow leopard?

I had real problems with all Adobe apps - it said I needed to install a version of Jave Runtime, but kept saying that I wasn't connected to the internet to complete the action. This was not the case - I was connected to the internet.
I followed this link : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1421  to install a version of Java and all Adobe apps fire up now. Haven't done much testing within the apps, but at least I'm further ahead than I was.
So thanks to the message boards for helping me out.

  • Ukelele generated custom keyboard layouts not working in Lion?

I asked this question in the stackexchange site a few days ago.  Nothing I've tried has worked so far, except for creating a new account.  Because a fresh account works, it's got to be something with my preferences, right?
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/21691/ukelele-generated-custom-keyboard -layouts-not-working-in-lion
    Here's the question from above:
I created a custom keyboard layout with Ukelele (http://scripts.sil.org/ukelele) in Snow Leopard (idea is to generate scandinavian letters with Alt-key, otherwise have a pretty much standard U.S. layout). After the upgrade, the old installed (to ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts) layout wasn't working.
Ukelele seems to work OK in Lion, but whether I put the generated keylayout in a bundle or single file, or save it "/Library/Keyboard Layouts" or "~/Library/Keyboard Layouts" doesn't seem to matter.
    Help?
    EDIT:
@Sergio, I cannot choose the layout in Input Sources. One keylayout file I tried:http://semeai.org/~sjl/us-scands.keylayout
    [EDIT: Removed unrelated stuff]
    UPDATE 2011/08/15:
    @Tom:
Copied your keylayout (it naturally ended up in my Junk folder):
    midgard (01:55) >ls -l ~/Library/Keyboard\ Layouts/MongolianQWERTY.keylayout-rw-r--r--@ 1 sjl  staff  44536 Mar 13  2008 /Users/sjl/Library/Keyboard Layouts/MongolianQWERTY.keylayout
Logged out, logged in, isn't showing in Input sources (I'm looking very closely between "Maori" and "Myanmar - QWERTY").
I've also uninstalled bunch of software and plugins giving suspicious messages to system.log, but hasn't helped.
    UPDATE 2011/08/16:
I created a test account, and lo, the layout works perfectly for it. Also the bug in preferences doesn't show for that account. When trying this on my own account, there are no errors in Console logs with the suggested keywords (I can't seem to locate console.log file, though).
    UPDATE 2011/08/16 later:
Nuking Library/Caches (and relogging) didn't help.
    UPDATE 2011/08/17:
    I did
    % find Library -name "*.plist" -exec mv {} {}.renamed \;
and restarted, but it didn't help. I restored the situation with
    % for file in `find Library -name "*.plist.renamed"`; \  do mv "$file" "${file//.renamed/}"; done
addendum: I also went through all the .plist files with plutil -s as described inhttp://www.askdavetaylor.com/can_i_check_my_plist_files_in_mac_os_x_for_problems .html. There was some brokennes, but in very unrelated applications.

    Tom,
    I think I love you.
That absolutely did it! Thanks so much!
If you'll answer with the same link in the stackexchange site, I'll mark the answer as correct, so you'll get the rep there.
    Thanks,
    Sami

  • Security and privacy system preferences not working after Lion install.  What to do?

Security and privacy system preference not working after Lion install.  Not sure if it happen with Lion installer or after updating. What to do?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” (without the quotes) and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

What all-in-one printers work with Lion?

    kennethfromtoronto wrote:
For Lion installation the recommendation was not to use the drivers on the included disk, but to download them directly from the Epson support site. I managed to install with no difficulties. Now the NX430 is working seamlessly with 15" MBP (Lion, 10.7.2); 13" MBP (Snow Leopard, 10.6.8); 27" iMac (Snow Leopard, 10.6.8); 15" Dell (Win7). I am sorry to hear that it did not work for you.
Ditto, most Printer/scanner manufacturers are getting up to date with Lion compatable drivers now. Most are available from their websites. Some still want to install old scanner software which is PPC so will have to downgrade to SL again, because they won't look for Lion compatable software. I find VueScan still an excellant program which works fine with my 3 yr old Cannon Pixma.

  • When is Apple going to fix the problem with external hard drive not working on Lion?

As for everyone else external hard drive does not work with Lion.
When will Apple fix this problem. Do they just ignore the customer : (

Copy off all your data off the NTFS formatted drive to another drive
Open Disk Utility in the Applications>Utilities folder
Select your external NTFS drive on the far left,  should have the drive makers name, a ID perhaps plus the word "media"
Click the Partition Tab, click the big box and click 1 Partition
If you want a Mac only drive > Option: GUID >format OS X Extended (Journaled)
If you want a Mac/PC drive (for over 4GB sized files) > Option: MBR > format exFAT
If you want a Mac/PC drive (for the most compatibility with other devices, Win XP, but only under 4GB sized files) > Option: MBR > format MSDOS (FAT or FAT32)
Give it a name and click Apply.
You can also search Microsoft for a free exFAT download if you have Win XP.

  • What happened to "calculate all sizes"?

I'd like Finder to calculate folder sizes in a list view. When I went to View/View Options menu, the "calculate all sizes" option wasn't there. Is this a change with OS 10.4.4?
    iBook G4 1.42Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

No change--it should be there. It should be there, down at the bottom with the Use Relative Dates option. You could try opening a Finder window, open the View Options window, then hit Command-1, Command-3 and finally Command-2 to get back to list view. If there is still no sign of Calculate Sizes you could try removing
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist"
and then restart. Also try logging into a test account and see it that account is working correctly.

  • Tascam US-428 not working with Lion

Tascam US-428 not working with Lion - Does anybody know why and what I can do to fix it?

The Tascam US-428 is a great unit, but like all businesses, Tascam desires to keep you purchasing their equipment and not stay with your old legacy items.  If they would consider servicing legacy units, possibly most may stay with Tascam.  But this keeps the machine moving when you "force" customers to upgrade their products when new technology shifts..
The "only" reason US-428 users need to upgrade and put aside the unit is if they need 64 bit functionality.  I did not have crashing when I loaded Logic in 64 bit mode due to the ability to access my 8 gigs of memory...and is the "only" reason why I need to go 64 bit.  32 bit functionality is limited to 4 gigs of memory.  Lion by default is 64 bit, so that is a plus.
But...if Tascam would continue to service some of the legacy units like the Tascam US 428, then some of us would not go to their competitors and may stay brand loyal.  I think Alesis has something simular and along the same portability as the Tascam US 428, so some might have to jump ship with Tascam.
If enough people called up Tascam asking about the US 428 or surfs their website and looks for the US 428 (I am sure they keep track of where people are going on their site), they might reconsider....
I have been a Tascam user for may years, but "if" they would put out a driver for the US 428 for Lion, I may stay with them...but they leave us with little choice but to look for something else...they do not have something comparable to the unit right now.
