Is it possible to build a function
(accessible through SQL)
which calculates the Median for a column
which will be passed as the parameter ?

You could use a group by function with this in the select statement...
sum(<column>)/count(<column>)
that will return the average.

TIMESTAMPDIFF calculation in Teradata & Oracle
Hi All,
I'm using OBIEE 10.1.3.4 version.
I have noticed difference in the calculation of TIMESTAMPDIFF (SQL_TSI_WEEK) when connecting to Teradata & Oracle as Warehouse DB.
The diff is in the way the rounding is done.
Has anyone seen similar behaviour, if yes then is it known issue & is there any solution to it?

Finally, I use this to make it done:

Oracle does not have a median function (though it does have avg, mean, variance, standard deviation, etc.). Does anyone know how to calculate this?
I am not very good in statistics but if I am correct the median is the value in the middle of a (ordered) range. If the range has an odd number of values it is the value in the middle (ex. 3 values than it is the second value) and if it has an even number of values than it is the average of the two middle values (ex. 4 values than it is the average of the second and third value).
I think that you have to write a procedure that reads the ordered range until the middle value(s) are reached and return the value of the median. -

How to disable the Calculation mode in oracle form
hi All,
i have 2 text items in one block.say TEXT_A, TEXT_B
TEXT_B is showing the SUM of TEXT_A where TEX_A is poulated by DB query and showing UOM(unit of measure for an item).
But
on some condition, i dont want to do SUM (like if the UOM are differents).
how can we disable or off the calculation mode for TEXT_B.

TEXT_C is the sum of text_B and TEX_C is having one line as to show sum of B .
i have set the TEXT_C property palette properties to show sum of TEXT_B and it is working fine.
now if the values are same in TEXT_A, TEXT_C should show SUM of text_b.
but if it is second case if the values are different then TEXT_C should not poulate .
do we have any SET_ITEM_PROPERTY(':blk_name',???????????,prperty_false)
?????????= so it can disable the Summary function whihc i set from property pallettle

All built-in functions are listed in the SQL Language manual:

In Oracle 10g I could see these functions.You can use PERCENTILE_CONT or PERCENTILE_DISC to get the median in Oracle 9. You can also use ROW_NUMBER.
I don't see MEAN or MODE even in Oracle 10.
Use AVG for mean.
ROW_NUMBER is one way to find the mode. -
Problem in median calculation in powerpivot

I have used below formula to find out median:

But Inside PowerPivot I am not able to see calculated values for any of the above measures. And when I drag this measure inside Pivot Table my workbook hangs. I have to kill EXCEL process from the task manager.
Anybody has an idea what exactly is happening?

Above formula failed in production environment. It's throwing following error:
Could not add the field "Median Custom" to the PivotTable because the formula is invalid.
But it works well with lesser no. of records.

The DAX formulas you have presented will consume quite a bit of memory due to how the EARLIER function works (i.e. the use of inner and outer loops). The degree of memory consumption grows significantly as the number of rows increases.
Perhaps you could try an approach described in this blog post created by a fellow forum member (Gerhard Brueckl) as it avoids the use of the EARLIER function: http://blog.gbrueckl.at/2013/04/calculating-median-in-powerpivot-using-dax/.

Unable to install Oracle 10.2.0.2 client
I am trying to install the Oracle 10.2.0.2 client but it gives an internal error and the installation gets terminated.It creates a log and .err file I am pasting the contents of the log file. Please let me know if any of you can help.

Installing oracle db 10.2.0.1 on REHL 5.6 using virtual box
I can't solve this erratic behavior:
Scenario: Phisical machine Windows 7 32b, virtual box v 3.2.12
Virtual machine Oracle Linux 5.6 64b installed without problems (I have installed several machines with p.e. SuSE 10 64b,
SuSE 11 64b and installed Oracle 10g without problems, Linux Oracle 5.6 with Oracle DB 11 ok)
Trying to install Oracle 10.2.0.1 (need to be this version) every time I exec runInstaller, it begins, but simply freezes the
machine. Each time it freezes at different points: sometimes at the first screen, other times I can reach the last screen with
the install button.
¿can someone give any ideas ?

Median function in BEx query based webi report
Hi Experts,
I have a requirement to have a median function in a chart in my webi report. I'm using BO 4.0 SP2 Fix pack 2.9 and using IDT connection to connect BEx queries. I have 3 dimension objects in X axis and Median as y axis. When i'm calculating median, it need to have the child dimension aslo be part of the chart. but my requirement the child dimension should not be in the chart.
Example: i have Region, Country and state dimensions as X axis, and Median of sales revenue by city as y axis.
In my chart, i should not include city. So i have written the formula like "Median(Sales revenue) Forall(City) in (Region;Country; state)" and i tried all the combinations of this.
When i'm including the city object its working fine, but when removint it, its not. Please help me in this.

I have tried your proposal before you have posted it.
In my special case the following if/else statement works successfully:
CKF = calculated key figure
Formula1 = (CKF1 == 0) * 0 + (CKF1 <> 0) * CKF2
In my case the CKF2 is the result value from "Incoming Order value" - "Turnover"
So I had to define a separate Formula (1:1 equals to CKF2) and then I was able to set "*CKF2" in the statement.
The statement CKF2 = (CKF1 == 0) * 0 + CKF2 is not possible (because it´s not possible to calculate from CKF2 itself).
Now it works

Oracle Lat/Long Projections and Conversion

In the mdsys.cs_srs table, the Latitude/Longitude projection is described as having no Spheriod values. ie:
SPHEROID ["None", 0.000000, 0.000000]
Does this mean that this projection uses a true sphere, rather than a spheroid? As well, what does it use for the earths diameter? Latitude/Longitude(NAD83) uses 6378137.0
ie: SPHEROID ["GRS 80", 6378137.000000, 298.257222]
I have a user that has written a formula for generating circular objects based on a spherical calculation formula (in oracle), using a value of 6378137.0 for the diameter. The resultant object is loaded into the table with a Latitude/Longitude srid (8192) and then converted to the NAD83 projection (srid = 8265).
If I take the object and display it in MapInfo, superimposing it on the "identical" MapInfo circle created with the NAD83 projection, it is a significantly different shape.
Any info or suggestions would be appreciated.

nullThe specification of "None" for the spheroid in SRID 8192 results in a default choice of a perfect sphere whose radius is 6370997 meters, and not 6378137.
Note that the value 6378137 for the GRS80 spheroid is not the radius but the semi-major axis of the spheroid. It is the radius of the spheroid at the equator where it is largest. If approximating a spheroid by a sphere, the proper choice of radius is the authalic radius which is the radius of a sphere with the same surface area as the ellipsoid. For GRS80, the authalic radius is 6371200 meters.
With this corrected set of numbers you should find agreement in your calculations. I cannot of course vouch for the formula you have implemented for computing your circular loci. -

At universe level, change the projection function of Salary to None. And in Web i try using median, it will give you correct result. For calculating median, please make sure that Salary values are in ascending order. -
What is better to use a calculation field or to use stored procedure

i want to know what is better to use a calculation field on oracle forms , or to do the calculation using a stored procedure at the data base level and fetch the results to the fields on the form

the stored procedure approach might be more readable and maintainable when the calculation gets complicated.
And it might be easier to reuse when it's needed in another part of your application.
