Calendar alert defaults

Need some help with Calendar and its alerts since upgrading to ML, which I love/hate. It's defaulting to all day events and I don't want that. I see no way to make it not default to that.
Then when I try to set an alert for a message with sound 15 minutes before, and I click done, i go back to see if its saved the changes and when i double click, it has not alerts. No matter how many times I ask it to alert me, it does not save the changes.
This is really frustrating.
1. How can I set up a new event and not have the All-day box checked?
2. Whey are my alerts not sticking?

Unless you travels a lot, you can switch Set Automatically to Off also
do a reset (Hold Sleep/Wake and Home buttons about 10 secs or more till Apple logo appears, ignore the Slide to Power Off that appears)
Note: You will not lose any data.

is here a way to set a defaul alert/alarm for when you enter a new event on the iphone calendar? i am able to set this on my iCal on my laptop, but sometimes i enter in bunch of dates into my iPhone calendar and there's no alert set and i'd like a default of alarm with sound set for 1 day prior to event (this is what i have set on iCal but that's my home laptop so when i am away and need to enter in events onto my iPhone, i'd like to have the alerts set automatically)

Anyone know the best way to lobby Apple about this? Having an default alert for calendar entries is a big time saver and a good way to avoid the embarrassment of a missed meeting.
Also, being able to select/change the sound that's played for calendar alerts would be welcome.

How do I set the default time for calendar alerts? I always want to have an alert 15 minutes before my appointments. I don't want to have to manually set it each time I make an appointment (I just moved to iphone from a windows mobile where this was basic stuff so I apologise if this is a noob question).

I have the same issue. I've searched these forums and found lots of people who have asked this same question, but nobody who has received an answer.
About a year ago, I migrated from a Windows PC and a Blackberry (both of which had very simple default alert options) to a MacBook Pro and an iPhone and have yet to find a solution on this forum or from any of my Apple-savvy friends. Very discouraging.

I can no longer determine a calendar alert snooze time?

I'm very dependent on my calendar alerts and use them for recurring events like bill paying and unique events like meetings and doctor appointments. Up until OS 10.7 (Lion), when an alert popped up and I wanted to continue being alerted of that event, I could simply choose the snooze time (be it 5 minutes, an hour, a day or a week) and could continue to be re-reminded until I chose not to be.
Last week I upgraded to Mountain Lion so I could take maximum advantage of iCloud and my new iPhone 5. After much frustration and searching, it's apparent that the option of determining the snooze time in "Calendar", formerly known as "iCal" is simply no longer an option. Why remove a core feature of a core app? I'm stuck using the default snooze time as set in the calendar app, then, when the alert does pop up, I'm stuck with either dismissing it completely or hitting "snooze" only to be reminded every 15 or 20 minutes. This works okay for events with a short lag time, but in other cases (I will sometimes set up a bill payment reminder days before it's due so I have time to cover the due amount in my bank account) I'm stuck having either it pop up incessantly for days EVERY 20 minutes for DAYS or dismissing it, risking missing the payment due date.
I know from scanning these forums that a lot of other people are unhappy with the dumbed down functionality of this core app. I haven't been able to find an alternative to the app from any third-party. It sounds like both "busycal" and "fantastical" are dependent on Apple's calendar app so I don't know if they will solve the problem or not. I don't really wnat to spend money on a third party app just to get back a core function of an app I've been dependent on for years.
If anyone has found a good alternative to help get back this simple, but critical functionality, I'd love to know about it. Thanks!

I have also submitted feedback to Apple about this, as I think they have rendered Calendar all but useless by stripping out the ability to set sound cues, and to specify the lag time when hitting the "snooze" button. I completely agree, this is a serious and unprofessional messtep to remove a core function as though it were a trivial feature of the software. I've been a loyal Apple consumer for two decades, and this really makes me angry.
I am hopeful the wonderful people at Apple will restore this function with the next update to the OS.

IOS 7 Calendar alerting for past events

Has anyone else experienced this ...
At 9:30 this morning (03-Oct) I got an alert for an event from last week (26-Sep).
Then at 10:00 I got an alert for another event from last week (26-Sep).
Upon examining the events, I saw the alerts set as:
9:30 event – alert 1 = one week before
10:00 event – alert 1 = 1 day before, alert 2 = 1 week before
After upgrading to iOS7 I set the default calendar alert to "1 week before" – that might explain why the second event's alert 2 is set earlier than alert 1.
But it doesn't explain the "you were supposed to be doing this last week" alert popping up.
Any thoughts (other than some date arithmetic gone awry)?

iPilot1 - after I upgraded to iOS 7.0.3 I got an even bigger surprise - the default alert time for any new event I created was "7 days after". I kid you not. At the top of the list of options, before "None".
However I just went back to the Calendar settings to check the default alert time, and nothing was ticked.
I chose "1 week before", and Hey Presto, new events default to "1 week before".
Of course, I won't know this has worked for sure until I get an alert.

"US holidays" calendar alerts keep poping up

Hi,
I'm getting calendar alerts for "US holidays" at 9am the day before, and I'm not able to turn that off. I went to settings-calendars, and changed "default alert times" for "all day events" to None. Then I went into several entries in "us calendar" and changed alert time for each one to "none", and finally I unchecked "us holidays" from my calendar list. Yet again, they still alert me at 9am (got ones for both Easter and Earth day after doing all that). Is there a better way to turn these off, or is this a bug in iOS ?

Having similar issues. Just got a 9am alert for Memorial Day and I've un checked the US Holiday calendar. This came up on my iPhone 4s running 6.1.3 but not my ipad running 7.1
Totally maddening.
Must be a bug.

Calendar alert issues with ios5

I am having trouble with getting audible calendar alerts on my iPhone 4 with ios5. Ever since I downloaded ios5 about 2 weeks ago, all I can get for alerts on my calendar appointments are vibrating alerts. I have gone to settings and selected an audible alert, but it still only vibrates at alert time. I am able to get audible alerts for text messages, and my "todo" list app, so I believe my volume is set at an appropriate level. Is anyne else experiencing htis, and have you found a solution?

Thanks for the suggestion, I wasn't sure if the default alert would have an impact, since I selected a specific alert time. However, I went into settings and tried to set the defailt time. Same result, I am still onyl getting a vibrating alert, with no audible tone.

Calendar alert issue

Hi all,
I've got a minor annoying issue. My wife (iPhone 4 with iOS6) and I (iPhone 5 wiht iOS6) share an apple account. On iCloud, we've got two calendars. The first is called "Calendar" which is there for us to put all of our general home stuff (birthdays, vacations, appts, etc) and is intended for both of us to use. I've got a second calendar called "Dan" which is just for me with a bunch of stuff she doesn't care about.
Here's the issue. In Calendar, she clicked "Calendars" and deselected the "Dan" under "iCloud Calendars". The only other calendar her Calendar app now shows is our default shared calendar. So, anything I put on the "Dan" calendar no longer shows up... yay! HOWEVER, alerts from my "Dan" calendar still appear on her phone. In other words, if I put an event called "test" on JUST my "Dan" calendar with an alert to go off at 1:00, at that time, BOTH of our phones go off and display alerts. The Event still doesn't show up in her calendar though.
SO, my question is, how can she make it so alerts from "Dan" calendar don't show up on her phone? It's annoying for her, and not cool for me if I want to put in an event that she shouldn't know about.

Update since Genius visit:
1) Apple is working on an update
2) There is no awareness at Apple of this calendar alert issue as a bug, hence it is not being addressed/worked on
3) Solutions offered by Genius have not resolved this issue.
Solutions offered by Genius, in order of which to try first:
1) Delete calendar data from iPhone: Settings>iCloud>Calendars OFF and then restore data from iCloud: Calendars ON
2) Reset iPhone settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings
3) Restore to factory settings: Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings, then restore data from iCloud and in-app backups.
4) Use another calendar app (seriously)
Of course, if the bug is actually part of the iOS software (could it be?) then no amount of erasing and restoring data will fix the issue. I completed the first two options with no change, and am not willing to do the third option because I am not interested in going through the process of backing up, then restoring all my third-party apps.
My solution: raise awareness of this issue with Apple, so that it can be worked on and fixed. I have reported it as a bug through Apple's feedback module: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html and I encourage-- no, ask-- you to do the same, if you are experiencing this issue. I provided a link to this forum topic to show the variety and detail of problems.

IPhone 5 calendar alerts.

My iPhone 5 calendar is defaulting to alert me of all appointments 2 days in advance. How do I turn this off?

I found that if I choose the "Calendar" which is not under "iCould" (ex: an event on my gmail calernder), than, I don't have the option to set the 2nd alert.
In other words, if I choose the event to be on one of my calendars under "iCoud" ( check one of them ), I will have the option to set the 2nd alert.

Help with Calendar Alerts

I use Google calendar synced to my Apple devices (MacBook Pro, iPad 2, iPhone 4s). The default calendar alerts from the Google calendar itself seem to dominate any attempt I make to change alerts on any devices.
Any time I try to change an alert time, it immediately reverts back to the default alert from Google. This is starting to **** me off and it makes me think that Apple is trying to discourage the use of Google calendar. I would hope not... Any help?

I have the same issue.
There was another posting saying that alerts could be turned off in Gmail. But my goal is not to shut down alerts, but to have the default alerting be "none" and to be able to manually set an alert in those special cases where the event warrants one.
Any suggestions are greatly welcome.

Calendar alert post-Mavericks installation won't stop chiming

Installed Mavericks yesterday over Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and have had a host of problems that have paralysed my computer use. As someone who's not particularly tech-savvy and relies on their Mac for their living, this has been a nightmare. The most irritating problem has been that I use the glass chime for my calendar alert. Well, it won't stop ringing--it's like a button's depressed and stuck in that position. Can anyone help? It renders the audio unusable now, which means no VOIP calling or audio of any kind as I'm forced to keep it on mute. And I can't find anything on the Internet that indicates anyone else has had the same problem. Can anyone help? (And no idea if this is connected but my mouse is fluttering all over the place, which is yet another annoyance, leaving me wondering why I was so stupid as to upgrade.)

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Controlling # of calendar alert vibrations - e71

Is there a way to have the calendar alerts only vibrate x number of times (say 3) instead of constantly - before shutting off?

I don't think the default calandar application has a setting to define the number of vibrations for the alert.
The alert type will depend on the current profile selected.

Changing calendar alert notification sounds.

I have an iPod Touch 2g and have been able to successfully sync it with the MS Exchange server we have at work. I can set an alarm for it and customize the sound for it so it can change. However, the Calendar event notification sound is on SciFi whenever an event is sent. A search of the forums suggest that the calendar event notification sound cannot be changed, but if this was true it'd be on a more default setting and not on the "scifi" sound, wouldn't it?
Currently, the only way I can see of changing the event alert sound would be to change the alarm clock sound as this seems to affect it indirectly (the alarm sound was set to sci-fi as well when changing the settings). Is there another way to specify the calendar alert sounds?

I've never used it but there is a place to set it on the menubar. Mail > Preferences.. > General tab > New messages sound: Set to one of the built ins or select add/remove to select a custom tone.

How can I remove calendar alerts from my iPhone?

My iPhone 4 (iOS 6) seems to be adding calendar alerts on its own and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove them. I use iCal on my Macbook Pro (running Mountain Lion 10.8.2) to sync my calendar events. None of my events on iCal have alerts set to them and I have disabled all alerts in my iCal preferences. Yet, for some reason, when I look at a calendar event on my iPhone, an alert is set for it.
How do I remove these properly? I do not simply want to silence these alerts, but figure out how they got there in the first place and remove them completely. For comparison's sake, I've included an image of the event from iCal and the event from my iPhone.

I understand you want to delete all of the photos from your iPhone. As a precaution, I would suggest importing the photos and videos from your iPhone into your computer. This will give you a backup for the images, and after import you will be asked if you want to delete the photos.

Delete a photo or video from Photos. Tap the Photos tab, tap the photo or video, tap , then tap Delete Photo or Delete Video. Deleted photos and videos are kept in the Recently Deleted album on iPhone, with a badge showing the remaining days until the item is permanently removed from iPhone. Two iPhones. One account. Can I have separate calendar alerts?

I have a new 4s. My wife has my old 3GS. We are using the same iTunes/iCloud apple I'd account. It's nice because she can make her own calendar and I can make my own calendar. If I don't want to see her calendar I just deselect it in the calendars to view menu. I can see her stuff if I want to and she mine by going the other way. The problem is Calendar ALERTs. Even if I've deselected her calendar, my iPhone still beeps a reminder at me from one of her Calendar alerts and vice versa. Is there some way to make it so that the alerts only occurr if I've selected her calendar to view?
I also have kinda the same problem with reminders. She gets mine and I get hers even though I've got two separate "lists" of reminders. Can I stop that?
Also a similar deal with contacts. Can we have separate contacts lists and only see the others when we want to?
