Calendar, iCal, iCloud & Security, Privacy & Access on a Mac
With the introduction of 10.8, it seems no longer possible to have calendars locally on your Mac and on iCloud as turning on iCloud forces you to migrate all your local calendars to iCloud. But then why would you care? Here's why:
- What if your internet connection goes down and you want to check appointments or change them?
- What if you are in an area without internet access?
- What if Apple's servers malfunction, as they have lately for Mail, limiting access to your iCloud information?
- What if Apple's servers get hacked - i.e. privacy concernes?
- Privacy concernes in general.
However there is a way around this issue that allows you to keep both local and iCloud calendars in Calendar. Here is how you do it:
- Export any calendars you wish to be kept on your mac (as opposed to iCloud) using the "Export" command in Calendar. Note where you save them.
- Delete these calendars. It doesn't matter if iCloud is activated or not in iCloud System Preferences.
- If iCloud is not checked in iCloud System Preferences, check it. iCloud will merge, if it has not already, all remaining calenders into iCloud. No local calendars will remain.
- If this process recreates calendars that you have exported, delete them.
- Open Calendar preferences and choose 'Accounts'
- Select Account Information, the "iCloud/caldav" account if not selected, and uncheck the box "Enable this account".
- Close Calendar preferences. Your iCloud calendars will disappear.
- In Calendar create and name a new calendar. This will now be a local calendar on your Mac.
- In Calendar use the "Import File" command to import the desired exported calender into the new calendar
- Repeat the last two steps for each calendar you want locally on your Mac.
- When you are finished, open Calendar Preferences and recheck the box "Enable this account"
Your iCloud calendars will reappear and your local calendars will remain.
To move an event from one calendar to another - i.e. from local to iCloud or back, simply right-click on the event and choose the calendar.
Do not forget to set you default calendars:
This can be done for local calendars in Calendar Preferences.
For iCloud on the Web it depends on calendar order. The top one is the default calendar.
Note that if you set of local calendars on your Mac, when you are on the web, iCloud Calendars will know nothing about them.
Personally I keep all events local except those I wish to share on my internal network or ones I wll need when I travel and will not have my computer with me. That way my privacy in regards to Calendar is better protected and I can gain access to my events from my own computer, even my connection shuts down for whatever reason.

I was using Icloud on my PC with Outlook 2010 and Windows 7 64bit. After I upgraded the icloud control panel to 3.0 my calendar will no longer load and open in outlook nor will it open on icloud if I access icloud with internet explorer. It works fine on icloud if I access it with Chrome. I can also access it through IE on another computer. Something is amiss on my system. Any thoughts?
Import the calendar and contacts in Outlook.com. For contacts, export from Outlook as csv and import into Outlook by choosing the Other option (https://people.live.com/import/other?biciid=ImportCatalog)
You'll need to save the calendar as an ics file to import it. Select the calendar folder, the File, Save as an save as an ics.

'Send To Kindle' Security & Privacy Accessibility - Strange - 'installd' ?
Just received an update notification for 'Send To Kindle'. So, I updated the 'Send To Kindle' App.
It installed into Security & Privacy for Accessibility the app named 'installd'? What a horrible name! With that name I would guess it is spy ware!.
Has anybody else noticed this?
I would like to remove it from this preferences.
I've checked out these references:
Reset App Access to OS X Privacy Data from the Command Line
How do I remove an app from...: Apple Support Communities
Thanks in advance.
P.S.
Already posted on Amazon Forum and Chatted with their on-line no-support.Yes, that makes sense it runs during installs, thus the name installd. With the d at the end I would venture to guess it is a daemon process. As shown in the picture it is unchecked.
As an installation process why would it show up in the 'Security & Preferences' Pane for Accessibility?
Also, when I query the the tcc.db
select * from access;
All the other programs listed show up but not the program 'installd'
Thus deleting via sqlite or tccutil will not work. But, yet, it is there? -
There're so many errors and bugs, please redo it from the start an do it right. Don't you have enough resources?
Have you guys seen how many discussions are about iCal, Calendar and iCloud, sync service, '403 error', 'There was an unexpected error with the request (domain (null) / error 0)', 'The server responded: “403” to operation CalDAVWriteEntityQueueableOperation' , etc, etc.??
Don't you think is enough? At least Mobil me used to work fine..
I don't want to offend anybody but I bet there are some users out there sick and tired of these things...I'm going to pile on to the iCloud iCal and Reminders implimentation. I'm still using Snow Leopard so I did a work around with setting iCloud up as a CalDav account. But why is it that between my iPhone, iPad, iCloud.com and my MacBook Pro that iCal on my MacBook is the only place where I can see my events and ToDos on the same screen? I can almost understand on the iPhone, but with the iPad and iCloud interface there is plenty of real estate.
I don't know how any body can use the iOS and iCloud tools to effectively manage thier schedules. As it is I am using third party iOS apps and google calendars and tasks. -
I cannot remove thunderbolt bridge from preferences. Even after I rebooot it is still there . I have not clicked ok to co figure. I saw it after a malware attempt " Mac Security" . Is the the thunderbolt an attempt to access my system by malware?
Many thanks BobRz for prompt and brilliant suggestion!!!!!! It worked!!!!
Just a follow question, any idea on how to delete duplicate copies of files and music as I have tried to delete as many files as possible yet the start up disc remains full?
Thanks a lot!!!! -
Do I understand correctly that if I own a Mac but no other Apple mobile devices, I will not be able to access my photos, documents, contacts, and calendar in iCloud?
No, you don't understand correctly.

ICal dead after update--access privileges/calendar cache error
Hi all,
iCal began acting a bit buggy earlier today--it wouldn't let me add any new events or see the details in old ones, even after closing and re-opening the program. I just did a software update (including OS software) and now it won't work at all!
At first I got the following error message: "“Calendar Cache” could not be moved because you do not have appropriate access privileges for “Calendars” To view or change access privileges, select the item in Finder and choose File > Get Info.."
I searched the archives and found threads advising to delete the Calendar Cache file and the program would rebuild the Calendar Cache after restart. I did this, however the program still isn't working! (And right before the start of the work week, wouldn't you know!)
The error message I'm getting now is "The file could not be saved because you do not have appropriate access privileges. To view or change access privileges, select the item in Finder and choose File > Get info."
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I really need access to my calendar for tomorrow!
(As an aside, I feel like the past 3 or 4 times I have updated my OS it has resulted in some weird error or problem--once it crashed my whole OS! I'm a life long Mac user and apple shareholder, but I'm really starting to lose faith. Apple Gods, if you are listening, please make it so that software updates do not kill my computer or its programs! Is that too much to ask for?)Sounds like something is definitely going on because mine did the same thing. Only now, I can't even open iCal anymore! I managed to export the files before it totally crashed so I at least have a copy of what was on there. I wish somebody would fix this so I can use my ical again! I was dependent on it for my daily work!
Now I keep getting error messages when I try to go back into the main program. The first error says: "the application iCal quit unexpectedly". When I click on Ropen it says Mac OSX and other applications are not affected. Click Try Again to tempo. restore the application's default settings and open it again." When I click on Report, I get the following details (it's long...):

Cannot access security & privacy
hey all
please can you help me with this 'all of a sudden" problem that i have encountered that is driving me absolutely insane.
i am trying to access the security and privacy setting under the system preferences tab but when i click on the icon a message pops up saying :
"You can’t open Security & Privacy preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac."
i have no idea where this came from!!
Is it because I have updated to the latest version of OSx mountain Lion??Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy the text — do not type it — into the Terminal window and press return:
file -b /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Security.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/Security
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot. -
My friend and I share an iCal calendar through iCloud. Until recently, we received email notificiations anytime either of us made changes to exisiting calendar events or added new items to the calendar. Does anyone know why these email notificiations stopped?
iCloud was experiencing problems with this a couple of days ago, where many users with shared calendars were getting email notifications even though their iCloud settings did not select to receive them. Perhaps when they fixed this problem it reverted your settings to not receive email notifications. Got to iCloud and check your setting for this. If it still look correct, try turning off email notifications, save the change, then turn them back on again and save the change again.

I am not able to access my contacts, calendar on icloud
I am not able to access my contacts, calendar on icloud. I get the message"unable to load...There was aproblem loading the application" Any ideas? I have an iphone 4 and am using Windows Vista. Had no problems before
Let's try the old classic reset, hold down the home button and screen lock button simultaneously until the screen goes black, and the apple logo appears then release.
If it still does not work or you have tried that, then:
1. Connect to your computer via USB.
2. Turn off iCloud backups and select backup to this computer.
3. Sync and backup.
4. Go to iCloud and delete your previous backups.
5. Turn on backup to iCloud in iTunes.
6. Backup to iCloud on your phone. -
I am trying to access my calender in the app Planner Plus and I get the message. "This app does not have access to your calendars." You can enable access in Privacy Settings. But when I go to Privacy Settings, there are no apps listed under Calendar. Anyone?
Oh my gosh. This worked perfectly!!!
After allowing the changes, I just had to open the apps again (such as Instagram), then the pop-up asking to allow access to Photos appeared!
And I thought I was going to get rid of my iPhone 4 already because of the issue. -
I am running Outlook for my mail, calendar and contacts and it synchs with I cloud for my I phone. /Today on my PC i cannot access myh "Calendar in Icloud" or my Contacts in ICloud. Get pop up dialogue box which says "the set of folders cannot be opened. The information store could not be opened"
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I use Touchdown from Nitodesk for my work email. Its a little pricey, but it works with your companys OWA (Outlook Web Access) portal. They do have a 30 day trial that they insist that you try to make sure it will work for you before you shell out any money for the app. It syncs the Calendar, notes, tasks, emails etc.
It has a discovery feature that it will figure out what it needs to configure. All you need to provide is how you log into OWA (Username/password, website) and the program does the rest. It works very well for me.
No I am not employed by Nitrodesk. I only use the program. There was no need to ask my IT people to set anything up for me.
Give it a try, it might work as well for you too.
One day I will have to give this app a try, I am just use to configuring my device to sync without a 3rd party app but I have heard that Touchdown seems to be the best thing going to setup a corp sync process.. -
How to sync *already existing* iCal calendars on iCloud ?
I was using iCal on my Mac before moving to OS X 10.7.2, and since I did the update to get iCloud, instead of sync my existing calendars on iCloud, it created 2 new empty calendars ("People" and "Work").
How to turn off these new calendars, and instead ensure that it is my existing calendars that are synchronized on iCloud?
Thanks in advance. If I understand your question correctly, just log into your iCloud account through your browser, load iCal where you should be able to see all of your calendars in the left hand pane. If your two empty calenders are listed there uncheck them both which should hopefully solve your problem.

Cannot upload a local iCal calendar to iCloud
I have encountered a problem with consolidating and migrating my calendars to iCloud. Previously I had been using MobileMe, but like a lot of iOS device users, I had made the mistake of also synching calendars and contacts locally. This had the effect of creating an "on my mac" calendar, which I did not realize for quite some time that I had been using.
In the process of migrating my MobileMe account to iCloud, I realized this and set about uploading the local calendar to iCloud. I used the following procedure:
1. Highlight the "on my mac" calendar and export it to an ics file.
2. From iCal, select File>Import and select the ics file I had just created
3. In the window that opens, selecting one of the iCloud calendars to import the events into
However, what I find is that the calendar hardly imports any of its hundreds of events. I rely on this calendar to keep track of events that I attended in the past, but it seems like no events in this local calendar prior to January 1, 2012 got imported into iCloud. I don't want to try and re-import it, since that might create duplicates of the events that have already succesfully imported.
Is iCloud not allowing me to import old events? Is there a way I can import the entire calendar to iCloud? Please advise.I doubt it will make any difference, I did it ever so slightly different.
Create a new empty calendar from the iCal file menu, select which account you want to create it in.
To copy a calendar ctrl-click on it from the menu that appears when you select the calendar button (top left corner of iCal) and choose export (export it to your desktop for ease)
Double click the exported file and choose the new empty calendar to import them into. -
