Calendar, messages, mail all quit after installing OS 10.9.4

I just purchased a macbook air 11" early 2014 on July 6.  When I set it up, a senior apple advisor helped me move the backup from my old macbook air onto the new one.  No problems.  Then we installed the 10.9.4 update and over the course of 3 days, with very little use, first calendar stopped working, then messages, then mail, and now my browsers both Chrome and Safari randomly quit.  Info on my laptop;

  • Netscape 7.2 Mail "Unexpectedly Quits" after install of J2SE 5.0 Java

My problem is with Mail & Newsgroups in Netscape 7.2 for Macintosh OS10 - Netscape quits at end of message download.
Since "Software Update's" recent J2SE 5.0 Java update, which I installed a day or two ago, Netscape's Mail & Newsgroups has been completely unpredictable. The most annoying problem being that Netcape would quit, over and over again. Sometimes for no apparent reason, but always reliably quitting after having downloaded the last message from the server. Poof! Window gone, program quit. And with each launch of Netscape, more messages in my Inbox. I finally was forced to change the server settings so that messages wouldn't download automatically. I could then delete them from my Inbox... if I could do so quickly enough. Sometimes the program would quit before I could make the necessary changes.
I have read many similar complaints and suggestions involving rather complicated fixes. None worked for me.
Here's what did work. And oh, so easy! UNCHECK "Enable Java" in Netscape's preferences. You will find the box in the Netscape/Preferences/Advanced pane. Apparently Netscape Mail & Newsgroups doesn't like the new J2SE 5.0 Java update.
So far I've seen no adverse effects from this in the Netscape 7.2 browser. However, I would like to know that Java is at work in the background as usual in ALL my browsers. Since Apple doesn't support Netscape, I am counting on an answer from another user.

Power Mac G4 "Quicksilver"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   800 Mhz Dual Processor, 1.5GB RAM

Scapsuiter, Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I still don't know why Java effected Netcape's mail the way it did, or even if that was really the culprit. But I did a little investigation into the MRJ plugin for Mac OS X (which I HAVE NOT installed). I found a sight that could be used to see if Java was really working in my browser (namely, "Walter Fendt’s Java Applets on Physics"). To test Netscape's bowser and mail I once again enabled Java. The applet worked fine in the browser. But here's what I don't understand. Now Netscape's Mail & Newsgroups feature is working exactly as it should, behaving just as it did before the problem. Is it possible that Netscape was simply overloaded with such a huge amount of messages as it downloaded them again and again, duplicating them each time I quit & re-launched the program? This seems unlikely as I've seen Netscape handle huge numbers of messages before, in various sub-folders and even the trash. My concern is since I don't know what caused the problem, it could happen again. I guess time will tell. I still have much to learn, but thanks for your response and for helping to further my knowledge on Java applets and the MRJ plugin.

  • Mail "unexpectedly quits" after migration from snow leopard to new iMac running Mountain Lion

Mail "unexpectedly quits" after migration from snow leopard time machine files to new iMac running Mountain Lion.  I can run connection doctor OK.  But the activity window is blank.   If you try to open message viewer window then mail program crashes.  Would really like to get my old emails back as the old imac is totally dead.  Thanks for any help.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Mail not working after installing Mavericks

Mail stoped working after installing Mavericks!

Check this out. It worked for me and is related to a problem in Accounts.plist...
The problem was caused by dodgy entries in the accounts.plist file in my User Library folder. It appears that either when I upgraded to Mavericks this file gained hundreds (possibly thousands) of spurious entries, or maybe these entries were in there before but previously the OSX/Mail combination was more tolerant. When I removed these the problem with Mail disappeared. Here’s what I did….
1> Make the user Library folder visible - in Mavericks this is a lot easier than Lion/Mountain Lion. Simply open up your user directory in Finder, select menu View>Show View Options, and select “Show Library Folder”
2> Navigate through username>Library>Mail>V2>MailData and select the Accounts.plist file. If this file is multiple megabytes (mine was 40+mb) then this is likely the cause of your problem (once sorted mine ended up at 19k in size!)
3> To be safe, make a copy of this file (I placed the copy on my desktop).
4> Using your chosen text editor (I used Text Wrangler but I’m sure TextEdit would work just fine) open the Accounts.plist in the MailData folder (not your backup copy) and take a look. If it’s the same as me you will find hundreds and hundreds of entries for the same mailbox repeated in there. Mine was an old MSN mailbox that I never use any more (I’ve seen in other forums that other Hotmail type accounts also seem to be the culprits in this context). There will likely be two lots of repeated data, one in the XML “DeliveryAccounts” <array> section, and one lot in the “MailAccounts” <array> section.
5> Delete (keeping in mind the need to select the XML sections correctly from <dict> to </dict> completely) all those extra entries that you found, keeping the mail accounts you do need, in the XML and save the file.
6> Mail should open up nice and fast again and not eat your system
7> If this did not work, and causes problems because of over eager deleting in <5> you can replace your broken Accounts.plist file with your backup and try again.

mail not working after installing os x, anyone know how to fix this?

  • Lost all my mail and folders after installing mavericks. How can I get these back?

After Installing Maverick on my Mac it seems that I have no mail folders anymore and I lost also all the mails that were stored. How do I get these back?

The mailbox list is divided into categories with headings in caps, such as ON MY MAC. When you hover the cursor over one of those headings (except for MAILBOXES), you should see the word Show or Hide on the right. Click Show. The  MAILBOXES category can't be hidden.
In each category, the mailboxes are arranged in groups, such as Inbox. To the left of each group is a small disclosure triangle. If the triangle points to the right, click it so that it points down.

  • Why I cannot assess deleted Apple mail messages in time machine after installing mountain lion from snow leopard.

Ever since I installed Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, I cannot retrieve my deleted Apple mail messages from Time Machine.  I could do it in the past using Snow Leopard.  The effective date for the the non-retrival of deleted messages is the date I installed Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard.  Any thoughts?

    Keith Montreal wrote:
It was origionally a local folder for things like receipts from the Apple Store, etc
I'm still not sure what you mean . . . is it listed in the "On My Mac" section in Mail's sidebar, like these?
Mountain Lion appears to have given it an icon very much like an Archive box and put the "on My Mac" folder within that "Box" on both the back ups and the new Mail program - in fact it did it 6 times, which was the origional problem.
    Can you post a screenshot?
I could restore inbox messages although they came in as a new mail box called Time Machine rather than into their origional mailboxes (there are 7 different addresses)
Yes, that's how Time Machine restores Mail messages, so it doesn't erase the current contents of an existing mailbox.  You can then move them into the desired location.

  • Mail Unexpectedly Quits after Upgrading to 10.4.10

I recently moved from Panther to Tiger (10.4.6) and today decided to upgrade through the steps to 10.4.10 for the PPC. That went smoothly, but ever since then whenever I try to open an eMail msg. (read or unread), Mail unexpectedly quits. It seems I can compose, get mail, search mailboxes and other activities, but I cannot open mail. I was having no problems whatsoever while I was running 10.3.9 or even after I moved to 10.4.6. The problems all began after I ran through the upgrade steps.
I am somewhat concerned with the number of Mail problems that seem to be posted in the Tiger forum. I use mail quite heavily and rely upon it for my business.
I am pasting in my problem report in the hopes that this may shed light on the problem. Thanks to anyone who might have any suggestions. I need to resolve this quickly.

First off, if you installed any Mail plugins or widgets that do anything with your Mail, uninstall them, restart and test again. If the same thing happens (or you didn't install any plugins or widgets) then follow through with the rest of this post.
If it is happening in the test user account as well then we know it's affecting the whole system. That means the problem lies somewhere outside your user folder.
First thing we're going to do is back up your email and your Mail settings.
    1. Make sure all applications are closed and that only Finder and Dashboard have black triangles next to or under them in the Dock. This is especially important for the Mail program.
    2. Make sure it says Finder next to the Apple in the top left corner. Click File and underneath click New Folder. On your Desktop you'll see a folder called Untitled Folder. Rename it to Mail Backup, and then close any open windows.
    3. Click the Go menu and under it select Go to Folder. Copy and paste this into the box and then click Go (or Ok):
    ~/Library/Preferences/
    4. Look for a file called com.apple.mail.plist and, while holding down the Option key on your keyboard, drag it on to Mail Backup. This file contains all your email account settings and we now have a copy in the Mail Backup folder. Close any open windows.
    5. Click the Go menu and under it select Go to Folder. Copy and paste this into the box and then click Go (or Ok):
    ~/Library/
    6. Look for the Mail folder and, while holding down the Option key on your keyboard, drag it on to Mail Backup. This folder contains all the emails you've saved, and it too should be in the Mail Backup folder now. Close any open windows.
    7. Click the Go menu and under it select Go to Folder. Copy and paste this into the box and then click Go (or Ok):
    /Library
    8. In the Window that opens drag the Mail folder to your Desktop. (You may be asked for your Administrator password.)
    9. Click the Apple menu and select Restart. When you're asked if you are sure, click Restart again. Restarting the computer makes OS X "forget" the Mail folder we put on your Desktop and recreate a brand new one the next time Mail is opened.
    10. Log into your user account (not the test account that we created earlier).
    11. Once you are at your Desktop open Mail. It should work normally now.
If not repeat steps 7-11 but instead of moving the Mail folder, move the Fonts folder.
Let me know how that goes.

  • Mail search problems after installing Lion

After installing Lion search in mail app dosent work correctly anymore. I keep thousands of emails in my mailbox and usually search needed email by typing sender to search, now it find only few sender. Any help anyone?

I ran into the same problem with only some messages (if any at all) showing up in the searches in Mail. For an example, I have over 100 messages from Netflix within all my mail folders (trash included) but when I search for anything containing "netflix" it would only pull up 2 messages from my trash folder on two random dates. This was the case for ANY searches I was trying to pull up, not just for netflix emails.
I spoke to an iOS Senior Advisor who did a screen share with me (because he had never heard of the problem previously) and after reviewing the issue, he said he will be taking this up to the engineers.
Here is what fixed the problem for me:
    1. Enable Indexing
Open Terminal, and type the following:  sudo mdutil -i on /
If it asks for your password, type it in and hit return.
Re-open mail. If this didn't fix anything, then you will need to re-index:
    2. Re-indexing HD
Go to System Preferences, Spotlight, click on the Privacy tab, click on the + to add the entire Macintosh HD to the list of "Prevent spotlight from searching these locations" and then remove the Macintosh HD by clicking the - button.
Once you've done this is will automatically start re-indexing in spotlight. This took about 90 minutes on my computer, but once it was done, I re-opened mail and it was working properly again.
If you still run into issues, I've heard that in Mail, clicking on "Mailbox" then "Rebuild" can sometimes fix the issue. Let me know if any of those steps worked for you!

  • Every time I start to compose a new mail message Mail Unexpectedly Quits!

This seems to be happening when Mail is auto-saving the draft for the 2nd time.  Once I restart Mail I can then finish the message from the 1st saved draft (of course I have lost any changes between the time the 1st draft was saved and when I had to restart).  When I then try to create another new message, Mail once again unexpectedly quits.  It does not seem to matter if the new message I am creating is a reply, a forward or a completely new message Mail still crashes.  This has only happened since I upgraded to Lion and it is of course very frustrating to be constantly having to restart Mail.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just did that and everything looked ok.  I do notice however when I open up my calendar off to the left hand side where all the calendars are listed there is a triangle with a exclamation mark in the middle of it.  When I clicked on it a window, just like the one that has been popping up, opens and it gives the same message.  "server resoponded with an error" and it lists a various event and gives the choice to go offline, or revert to server.  I have to choose go offline in order to get the window to close.  Any idea what is happening?

  • Calendar alerts on every device after installing Mountain Lion. How do I stop this? Tech support acted like I was the first person this happened to. Anyone have the solution?

I have Calendar alerts on every device [Mac/iPad/iPhone] after installing Mountain Lion. How do I stop this? Tech support acted like I was the first person this happened to. Anyone have the solution?

Well, whichever device you uncheck = exclude from calendars (and reminders) via iCloud will be excluded as both, receiver and sender. It's an "all or nothing", I guess. Otherwise it'd get more complicated, and the support calls could easily fill an extra forum...
@lmp68: don't think iTunes is it, in the days of iCloud that would sure take quite an extra effort, if possible at all.

  • Mail not working after installing OX 10.10.1

Have been dealing with symptoms of the update in mail all day long:
-Moving messages to folders results in "cannot move" message.
-Attempts to quit the program do not work, must Force Quit.
-Messages won't delete, or allow themselves to be moved.
-Messages will appear to have been moved from the Inbox as long as I stay in Inbox. However if I click on another folder (Sent messages, for example) and then return to Inbox, none of the messages have been moved/deleted.
All in all it is a near to a complete collapse of the program as I have seen.  In light of the 100+ emails I have to sort and file per day, I really hope this can be resolved quickly.  Any advice would be appreciated.

it is a 2.7GHz intel core iS and the version is OS X 10.9.

  • ITunes keeps unexpectedly quitting after installing Leopard

After installing Leopard, iTunes keeps unexpectedly quitting? I've tried recreating the iTunes library with no help.

i had the same problem. finally i found out what was going wrong. it was the digi core audio extension that messed up my itunes. so if you are using pro-tools you should have a look into this possibility.
if not you might want to try and remove any non-apple audio extension and see what happens. don't trash them as you might be able to pin point the problem to only one extension.

  • Premiere CC 7.2.2 will not close project or quit after installing PP 2014

After installing PP 2014 I can open a new (or old) project in CC 7.2.2 but cannot close that project or quit the app unless I Force Quit. Anyone else experience this and is there a solution?
PP 2014 seems to work OK.

Called Adobe tech support and they solved the issue. It was a permissions problem.

  • Acrobat keeps quiting after installing through creative cloud

I have not got Acrobat to work ever since downloading from creative cloud. If I open it it quits after a few seconds. It seems others have had this problem but I couldn't find any solution. When I went to save a word file as a pdf it reported that there was no file association.  I really don't wnat to resort to cutepdf but will have to because I use this a lot for work.
    Does anyone know the solution?
    Thank you......................... liz

    Hi Liz,
    Try this
    - Close Acrobat
    - Launch Adobe Application Manager from either the Start menu (Win) or Applications (Mac) folder. It should auto update if needed
    - De-activate and reactivate one of the other CS6 products like Photoshop CS6
    - Test if the behavior persists for Acrobat
Not the same issue but the same solution

For the file association issue I would post here as a separate issue

    Hope that helps,
