Calibrate viewer and timeline

The frame seen in the viewer does not match the frame where the playhead is on the timeline. I searched the manual for calibration and don't see it ...
On my system, the two windows are off by a fair number of frames. It makes it irritating when trying to set a transition. Especially when the next scene is not wanted in the transition. In earlier versions of FCP, I'd make a freeze frame to give enough frames for the fade-in or -out of a transition ...
this is driving me crazy! Surely when the timline is set all the way to single frame zoom, the viewer window should show the same frame.

So, I should trim the selection as I see the frames in the timeline? and then add the freeze frame to provide transition handles?
When I tried to control the transition yesterday (simple fade in-fade out), I could not control exactly where the center point (end of outgoing clip/beginning of incoming clip) and that viewer window was always showing it with other media in there.
Today I saw a question along the lines of my question and it seemed that he found it was the QT movie fps that was making the problem. --that the "break" between scenes does not occur at that gop group point (if I have my understanding in place) ... If that is true, perhaps I can insert the freeze frame so that my selection breaks at the proper frame point.
I saw the subclip suggestion after I had posted my query ... maybe it was for prior versions, I don't remember. It came up in the little side menu of suggestions of similar questions.

  • Mouse flickers after encoding. Shifts. Lags. Viewer and timeline.

After encoding, noticed that the mouse cursor flickers while watching the encoding in FCP 7 viewer. Parts of the encoding had jerky motions. A previous time, this led to color shifts and other anomolies in the canvas, which disappeared after a cold boot.
Used uncompressed 8-bit PAL codec (yes, we're in SD), but I think that another time it occurred after encoding an M2V file.
Today once the FCP viewer with the encoding was closed, the mouse stopped flickering.
This is the second or third time I have had this with or after encodings over the past several months.
Sorry for the lack of detail. I have not troubleshot this carefully. I don't know exactly where or even if the encoding is actually damaged. The previous time, it became worse the longer the machine stayed on. That time, even the timeline in FCP had the same problem, and it seemed like the sequence had been seriously damaged, but later after a cold restart, there was no damage to the timeline.

  • Duration difference between viewer and timeline after insertion or overwrit

Reopened project from last week and now when I try to put in a new scene, the duration I give in the viewer changes in the timeline.
i.e. - I overwrite in a 17 frame scene and it becomes a 21 frame scene in the timeline.
All worked well last week, Any ideas?

People have very short attention spans these days. Someday the government will have to put Ritalin in the water supply.
I think I have found my own answer.
The clips that were causing problems were captured at a different frame rate than the timeline.
I didn't do the capture but it is my best guess so far.

  • Where us my canvas and timeline and why does it say Viewer:slug ????? HELP!

Ok I dont know whats going on but when I go to Window-> Canvas it is greyed out!!! Whats going on pls pls help me!
    Thsnks

The Canvas and Timeline options are greyed out because there is no open sequence. Look in your browser for a sequence, double-click it, and the Canvas & Timeline will appear.
By default, the Viewer will load a video Slug, which is just black video.
    This is normal.

  • Unable to view canvas and timeline

    Hi,
I'm new to final cut express. I would like to ask how do i view the canvas and timeline.
Below is a picture which i see when i try to view it
The options canvas and timeline are grayed, thus unable to click it
    Please help me.
    Thanks

You don't appear to have a sequence open; that's what displays in the Timeline and Canvas. If there isn't a sequence icon in your browser, go to File>New>Sequence and double click on icon that appears in the Browser.

  • Please help!! restoring canvas and timeline view

I accidentally exited the timeline view which also closed the canvas view. any ideas on how to recover them? I've tried everything!! please help!
    Thanks!

That won't bring back the canvas and timeline if they're closed. FCE won't know which sequence to open. You have open it manually.

  • 10.6 iCal week view and mini calendar are out of sync-how to fix?

How does one re-establish "sync" between the large window week view and the small mini calendar month view displayed on the lower left side? Mine is out of sync by a month. Thanks!

Are they off by always the same amount of time or they drift apart over time?
If the former, you may try a quick adjustment, though it is a manual affair. Control-click on the clip in the browser, choose "Open in Timeline" and try moving the audio to match.
If I remember correctly, DV tape audio could be recorded in 32KHz or 48KHz. The latter is the one that should be used, always.
Maybe this one was recorded at 32KHz?

  • Viewer and External Monitor doesn't playback at same time

When watching clips in the viewer window, they playback fine. But on my external monitor, it only shows the first frame from when it's played. when I stop playback, the external monitor then shows the last frame the Viewer window is stopped on. How can I fix it so that the viewer and external monitor playback the clip at the same time?
At the moment we're digitizing footage with the Offline RT Photo JPEG codec set to 75% quality.
A few days ago we were digitizing footage at 35% quality and that footage plays back fine. We moved to 75% quality at the editor's request. A few days ago we had created a few sample 75% quality tests for the editor to view. I loaded those clips into Final Cut right now and they playback fine as well. So it's all of a sudden just these new clips created yesterday :S.

    Yes.
Forgot to mention that the timeline plays all the footage back properly on both the canvas window and the external monitor. Sorry for not mentioning that sooner.
More discoveries! The playback 'freeze' only happens if I open a clip from the browser into the viewer. If I open a clip from the timeline into the viewer, it plays-back fine!

  • Can't get Canvas and Timeline Windows to Show

Not sure what happened but Canvas and Timeline windows won't show. Pls help!

I'm completely new to Final Cut Pro (I just got Studio), and I've been having the same exact problem: I open up Final Cut Pro, open a new project, and I only get the Browser and Viewer windows. I go to Window/Arrange, and I still can't open up the Timeline or the Canvas. I would just double click on a Sequence, but I don't know what the difference is between a sequence and a clip.
Just to help you guys out, I'm working on the "Into the Blue" thing from the Training DVD; I had started working on it, but quit Final cut, and when I double clicked on the Project (I Saved it to Mac HD) to open it, I only get the Browser and Viewer. Please forgive my ignorance, but help! I'm panicking because I don't know what to do!

  • Color profile for Viewer and Canvas?

I've noticed that the color of the video in the FCPro 4.5 Viewer and Canvas looks absolutely nothing like the color when I output to DVD or QuickTime movie. (The video in FCPro seems to be much darker.) Is there a way to make the Viewer and Canvas look more analagous to what I'm going to get on final output?
    Thanks.

Nope. Computer monitors colors have such a wide range that they are very unreliable. This is why it is best to hook up a TV, or better yet a properly calibrated NTSC Monitor (the latter only if you are producing professional video).
    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • 16:9 viewer and canvas

Ok, this is a simple thing, yet it is bothering me. Every time I see a picture of someone using FCE, the viewer and canvas are widescreen. I can't seem to get my canvas and viewer to be widescreen. I can work with widescreen just fine, but I have grey bars above and below the image. My viewer and canvas are in 4:3 ratio. Can anyone explain how to get the viewer and canvas into a 16:9 ratio?
    Thanks
    Alex

I am assuming that you are working with standard definition DV but have the camera set to the 16:9 setting? If so, you need to change the Easy Setup setting to DV-NTSC Anamorphic. After changing that setting create a new Project, or from the current project, just create a new Sequence (since the existing default first Sequence will still be using the DV-NTSC setting). Once you open the new Sequence, click Window, Arrange and choose one of the existing settings (Standard, Compositing, or Small Windows). The Viewer and Canvas window should automatically switch to the widescreen 16:9 format with no grey bars. The Browser and Timeline windows will also resize to match the changes in the Viewer and Canvas.

  • My Biggest Complaint is the Combined Viewer and Events Window

I, like most editors, work on two monitors. Personally with FCP 7 I keep my Bins and my Favorite Effects on my second monitor and have my viewer and my Canvas and timeline in the main window.
Now if I want to make my Events (formerly Bin) usable I would put them on the second monitor, but then the Viewer and where I have to scrub is moved to the second display, and that is really inconvenient as compared to have the Viewer and Canvas window next to each other on the same screen. Why would I want to scroll on a second display and watch so far away.
    This drives me crazy!
