Calibrating a printer?

What's the best way to calibrate a printer?
I was thinking about creating an InDesign file with various CMYK color-built sqaures and then comparing the printed squares. I would then print out the sheet and compare it with my Pantone Color Bridge swatch and tweak the printer settings until I got a match. Will that work or is there an easier way?

If you want good calibration and a profile, invest in an instrument and software (you need to re-calibrate fairly often). My Xerox came with a self-branded xRite ColorMunki and iOne match, which you can buy as standalone products for a fairly reasonable price.

  • CS5 Color Calibration and Printing Problems vs. CS3

We are migrating from CS3 to CS5, and i'm working on getting the printing right.
We are on MacPro towers, 10.6.6, with LaCie LCD Monitors and an Epson 2200.  Calibration on monitors and printer done by EyeOne Pro and Profilemaker Pro.
Printing:  In CS3, creating the profile was done by printing the appropriate Eye One testchart.  It gets opened with 'no color management', and is printed out with 'no color management'.  This way, the testfile is being printed as the printer prints, with no tweaks.  The color adjustment controls (brightness, saturation, cyan, magenta, etc) within the Epson driver are set to Zero.  Then, this print is scanned in, using the Eye One, and you get the profile of the printer.
Now, when printing actual files, 'Photoshop Manages Colors' is utilized, and the created Profile from Eye One is selected.
We have had great luck with this, matching screen to print.  If a slight tweak is needed, then we could use the Epson color adjustment controls to modify slightly.
Again, we've had great prints consistently for years using this method.
    Now comes CS5...
Printing.  Trying to use our existing profile...
When 'Photoshop Manages Colors' and the Profile are selected, now the Epson color adjustment controls are greyed out.  So, we lose out on the 'tweaking' possibilities.  I'm a fan of profiles, but now i have absolutely no control after the fact.
Trying to create a new profile....
'No Color Management' is not longer available as an option in 'Color Handling'.  So, now i can't even print out the baseline testchart without adding some sort of profile to it?  If i would choose 'Printer Manages Color' for this testpage, I would normally set the Epson Color Adjustments to Zero to get this baseline print for profiling.  But now, If I would do that, it's only going to be greyed out when i go back in and let Photoshop manage the colors.  Sheesh...
    To make matters worse...
I pull up the same testchart in CS3 AND CS5.  We are on a calibrated monitor, using North American Prepress presets on both programs.  Same monitor, same color settings, same file.  AND the testchart looks different in each program.  Similar, but definite differences in shades.  Eyedropper readings are the same for both programs.
So, CS5 is even rendering color differently on screen, and i have little or no way to create my custom profile or control my printer?  Sheesh....
Any help or direction is appreciated.
    Rich

    thanks for the input.
I will look at the links you recommended.  When 'Compensate for Scene-Referred Profiles' is unchecked in CS5, the monitors match.  I'll need to do some research to see that that 'compensation' is, and what's happening.
As for the 'not considered a good color managed workflow'...
That's fine.  But I would consider a good managed workflow using a calibrated monitor, and using a profile that matches the printer and substrate being used, right?  When i plug in the canned printer profile in CS5, i get unsatisfactory results.  With that 'correct' workflow, there is no way to modify what is ending up on the printed page.  You get what you get.
Even if i back up to CS3, create a custom profile with the Eye One, run Colorsync/Profile all the way through, and eliminate the Epson Color Adjustments, I'm still obeying a 'correct' workflow, but what if my prints are slightly too Cyan?  Or slightly too open/light?  (granted, Profilemaker Pro does have a profile 'editor', but it's convoluted and extremely difficult to use.  I've never gotten good results with it.)
If you have no way to do small adjustments at the back end on the printer, and it's been 'profiled' correctly, and the prints don't match calibrated screen with proper color spaces....
uh....then what do you do?  which one is right?  The screen or the printer?
I've had hundreds of images over the years go from screen to client (or press if we were controlling the print phase of the job), which then got printed, and have had basically 'zero' client issues with color.  We have great color here on screen, from capture into post production.
But when my client wants a proof, in house, they want to see what they've been seeing all day in the studio and in post.  How am I supposed to adjust my prints if a 'proper color managed workflow' isn't giving me matching proofs?
I sincerely appreciate the input here.  I'm just frustrated, because even if my 'workflow' isn't technically correct, it's not without merits and I've had excellent consistent results that just 'worked'.  Now, i've got to find a new method within CS5.

  • Calibrating monitor, prints, and CAMERA

I have a canon 5d. I custom white balance for correct color in camera. When I see the photo on the back of the camera dislplay the color looks spot on but when I upload to the computer the colors are almost purple. I use and eye one display calibrator for my monitor.
    How can I correct this?

    Aimee,
The problem is that your LCD screen on the camera is not color or tonally calibrated and what you see on it is not what you get. That's pretty normal for back of the camera LCDs and there's not anything you can do about it.
Are you shooting RAW or in camera jpegs? If you're shooting in camera jpegs, what color matrix have you chosen? You can basically set them to sRGB or Adobe RGB and, if that's what your'e shooting, they should be pretty close when you open them in Ps. If you're shooting RAW, which I really encourage you to do, the white balance you set in camera is only a guide used as a starting point for the raw image processing application - Canon's DPP, Adobe ACR or Lightroom or PhaseOne's CaptureOne. The white balance, along with the RGB working space can be overridden in the raw software to whatever works best for you.
Obviously a hardware calibrated monitor is a must when evaluating digital files. I assume you've done that, right?

  • Images printing from D4s are bad...same calibration D3 is perfect...

I have an epson 3800 printer and have calibrated both printer and monitor then tried to print images shot at a graduation on my Nikon D4S.  The print quality is awful, skin tones too dark and images looking nothing like what I see on my screen.  I then pulled up an image shot with my Nikon D3 and printed that...perfect.  What am I missing??  Have printed from both Lightroom, and Photoshop with same poor results from D4S and current calibration.  D3...perfect.  Running out of paper, ink and time.  Suggestions?

What do you mean with "color space set to Adobe RGB"? You can not change LR's working color space. It is fixed to ProPhoto.
    Important rules for printing:
    - When selecting the correct profile for the printer/paper combination used in LR and let LR color-manage it is very important to have the color management in your printer driver turned off.
    - To get what you see on screen, you need to calibtate your screen.

  • HP Color LaserJet CP1215 - Color printing - Page prints yellow background

Good morning --- I don't believe I have posted to this forum before, so I hope someone can help me solve this issue.
    My CP1215 color LaserJet -
    printing pref set to color-
printing a document with colored icons, etc. or color photograph
Results: the "background" or what should be the white area, is yellow - bright yellow.
If I switch printing pref to B/W, I get a black/white document or photo.  Of course, no color.
I have replaced the yellow toner cartridge (HP product) TWICE, the second one just this morning.
    There are NO error messages.
Tried running the cleaning tool; disconnect/reconnect, etc.  No luck.
I gave up trying to solve this issue 2 years ago, and have kept the pref set to black/white with no tech issues.
Now, however, I have the need to print in color, and I would really like to figure out how to correct this problem.
This printer is a monster - ~30 lbs or more, and I would rather not have to haul it to a computer shop or ship it.
If anyone out there has had this problem, please let me know how/if you were able to resolve it.  Many thanks.
    Susan - Threecats

    Hi Threecats
I understand when you print in color you are getting a yellow background.
I have included a document for troubleshooting the all yellow background printing.
Print out a configuration page from Solution eight first. This document  will provide steps for cleaning and calibrating the printer. The Print quality troubleshooting page will identify the print cartridge that is causing the issue.
Let me know the results when you compare it to the one in the document and if the background printed yellow again. Also the Print quality troubleshooting page results.
What kind of paper are you using?

  • Printing issues in Illustrator with HP Designjet Z6100

I am using Illustrator CS5 on a mac running Lion 10.7.2. Printing to an HP Designjet Z6100. Getting muddy colors. We also have PCs on which we run the same version of AI using the same color management settings, to the same HP printers. We can't match the great color we get off the PC when printing from the Mac. The color management settings on the mac are: color handling=let AI determine color; printer profile=Adobe RGB (1998), on PC SRGB IEC61966-2.1; rendering=relative colormetric. Virtually the same as the PC settings. Running on a network, not sure the software there, but it is PC based.
I have gone to HP, Apple and Adobe without much success. Anyone have this workflow setup, and are you successfully printing great color from your Mac to the HP designjet Z6100, or Z6200?
Any advice would be great! Thanks much,
    Janis @ T&C Graphics

    A few observations:
    "I am using Illustrator CS5 on a mac running Lion 10.7.2. Printing to an HP Designjet Z6100. Getting muddy colors.     - It may help to update all of your applications on the Mac side ( if you haven't already );
    - Your color settings are not the same, on the Mac you selected Adobe RGB; on the PC you have sRGB;
    - What are your CMYK settings?
"I have gone to HP, Apple and Adobe without much success. Anyone have this workflow setup, and are you successfully printing great color from your Mac to the HP designjet Z6100, or Z6200?"
    - I've managed a large format shop where we had PC's and Mac's printing to a HPDesignjet5500, but I was going through a calibrated RIP ( Wasatch 5 ).  Your solution may come down to simply calibrating the printer.  But, I would go a step further and establish a calibration system including a spectrometer.  The HP Z6100, I believe, has an internal spectrometer.  And, I believe HP has an optional Postcript Level 3 RIP.  If you have those 2 elements ( the RIP and the spectrometer ), then you can build your own .icc profile(s) for the printer(s) and paper(s) you commonly use in your workflow.
You did not mention if you had calibrated the RIP or HP Z6100 driver.  If not, I would start there.  Unfortunately, with every iteration of Mac OS's, Adobe application versions, and even HP's update program, there may be something you've overlooked somewhere along the way.  You have to look at certain variables when dealing with printer output.  What may look good to you may not be the most accurate color and, vice versa, what may not look good to you may be accurate color.  The key is establishing an objective and you will get that when you do a thorough system calibration.  I hear over and over that people cannot match what they see on their monitor to what they get in their printer output.  Few ( and I'm not saying you are one of them ) have done a thorough system calibration.  Now, if you've established via a thorough system calibration, that the PC to HPZ6100 is more accurate, then you've isolated the problem to the Mac OS.  The decision now comes down to, Do I dump the Mac for the PC?  Perhaps not, but I wouldn't rule it out.  On the other hand, you may establish that the PC is inaccurate, therefore the Mac should be your point system.  This is all guess work until you calibrate both systems and establish an objective workflow.

  • Printing Problem With Epson PictureMate PM240

I use an Epson PictureMate PM240 to print 4x6 proofs from negatives and slides scanned using a Nikon Coolscan V ED. So far, even without calibration, the prints I get using Photoshop Elements 5 (and previously 3.0) have been good enough. I understand that the PictureMate is not exactly a pro printer, but I like its small size and output for what I need it for.
I recently loaded Lightroom 1.1 for a 30 day trial. I like the idea of getting DNG files from Vuescan for a touch of processing in lightroom without having to save the files. I also love the user interface and workflow. However, for some reason, I cannot get a decent print to the PictureMate from Lightroom. I can use the same DNG file in PSE 5.0 and get a print close to what I see on my monitor. I can actually use the same file and print it directly off the PictureMate (by inserting the memory card into the PictureMate media reader) and get prints much closer to my monitor than from Lightroom. I tried for days and wasted lots of paper but I cannot get Lightroom to print like PSE/Photoshop/PictureMate(direct).
Is this the case where Lightroom needs a special printer profile? I don't have any for the PictureMate and my monitor is not calibrated. Still, I cannot understand why I can get good prints from PSE and (Photoshop CS3, at least the trial beta version) but not Lightroom. You would think the printing would be the same in Lightroom and Photosho/PSE as they are from the same company.
    Any ideas?

Boy Patrick, no response at all after 2 days... I'll chime in here.
Printing to this printer from lightroom (LR) probably will not work. To print from LR you need have a printer that will allow the application to control the color management. The PM240 does not have this capability. You are probably wondering why you cannot let the printer manage the colors just like the other apps you mention. The reason being that the operating color space of LR is the very large ProPhotoRGB, and your printer is more than likely expecting a sRGB color space, a very common yet smaller color space. Reading a ProPhotoRGB image as if it is a sRGB will result in the dark muddy image that you see complained about in this forum very often.
If you want to use this printer and use LR to manage your images. After doing any editing that you like in LR. Export the images in sRGB format and load them onto a memory card. Then print directly from the card, a neat feature of your printer.
    Good Luck.

  • Change in desltop print quality?

When I had a system with XP,in order to make high quality prints (with photo paper) I needed to set the printer controls to HQ, paper type to “photo” and so on......
I acquired a better system running on W7 64Bit and now if I make the same print all I need do is insert the photo paper and print to receive the same result....  If I set the print controls as previously necessary, the print comes out dark and over-saturated.
Monitor is calibrated via Windows Calibration controls
Printer = Canon i900d (for both systems)
Software = all graphics software ie: Photoshop, Illustrator.......
Anyone have any clues as to why?

    Hi again ncnash,
Thank you for the quick reply!
Since you were not able to restore the resolution to your desktop's display, I recommend trying a different cord, as well as a different monitor to your HP desktop.
If the issue continues, I suggest returning your system back to a restore point when the display was not fuzzy and flickering. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows Vista).
Should the display remain unchanged, I recommend performing a backup and recovery of your desktop's operating system. To do this, please follow this resource on Backing Up Your Files (Windows Vista), as well as Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows Vista). This should return your system back to factory defaults.

  • Choosing a monitor calibration tool

I realize this topic has been discussed before - but the products do get updated and change periodically, so I am asking for advice here on the current state of opinion - I am looking to calibrate dual Appple 23" monitors that work side by side.
They are pretty close right out of the box, but to improve things I have been considering the Monaco XR or XR Pro, ColorEyes & Eye One Display 2.
I imagine they all do a decent job of calibration, though I read somewhere that calibrating 2 monitors is not run of the mill for all calibrators.

I used the Monaco for several months before buying the Eye-One Photo. It worked well for the monitor calibration, although I didn't find that it was as especially good at matching my laptop screen to my Apple Cinema Display. The real problem for me was the method Monaco uses for calibrating the printer. I was not reliably able to print what I saw on my screen. Therefore, I bit the bullet and got the spectrophotometer (Eye-One Photo), which has done a very good job with both monitors and printer. While the Eye-One Photo measures the printer output (the print) directly, the Monaco relies on a scanner to tell it what the print looks like. This "indirect" measurement (necessary because it is not a spectrophotometer) led to inconsistent and inaccurate printer profiles.

  • About printing with Aperture

When I print with PS or any other application (e.i.: Pages) always appears the presets that I have calibrated for printing with my three favorites papers, but with Aperture these presets do not appears and the dialogue of the printer is complety different.
Does anybody knows how can I solve this?

    Hi
I found this article on the apple website to be super helpful. I now get the most accurate prints from Aperture, noticeably superior to anything other program I've tried printing from..

  • Re: Printing Problems

ColorLaserjet 2550. I have vertical lines on printouts right down the screen. Just replaced imaging drum, but drum warning light no longer shows.

    Hello Faulkes,
I am sorry to hear that you are having issues with vertical lines on your printed pages. I have found the following in the HP Color LaserJet 2550 documentation.
    Check the following:
    ● One or more print cartridges are low or defective. Print the Supplies Status page to
check remaining life. If you are using non-HP print cartridges, no messages appear on
the printer control panel or in the HP LaserJet Toolbox.
    ● Clean the printer using a cleaning page. Open the HP LaserJet Toolbox to use the
cleaning page. See To use a cleaning page for details.
    ● Use the tools on the Troubleshooting tab of the HP LaserJet Toolbox to correct the
    problem.
    ● Inspect the imaging drum for toner dust, oil, or fingerprints.
    ● Check the jam-access door.
    ● Calibrate the printer.
For instructions to use a cleaning page and calibrate the printer, refer to HP Color LaserJet 2550 Series Printer - Cleaning and Calibrating the Printer.
    I hope this helps.

  • Printing photo in Photoshop Elements

When I print several photos from the APE some of them have black vertical strips in several different locations. I am using an hp photosmart 7760 printer, HP photo best quality paper, selected 4x6 photo w/tab and borderless copy.  I have calibrated my printer and have replaced the print cartridges. The photos have been taken directly from my camera to my computer.
I then tried to use the photos with the Microsoft software on the computer to make the photo and the lines disappear.  What is happening in the Photoshop Elements Software to create the lines?
    DBrandt

Sarah, the stripes do not show on the monitor when I am working on the
image in PE, but they are there now both when printing from within PE &
    when printing from another program.
If I take the source jpg & print it with another program the bars are not
there. If I do only an adjustment layer, they are not there when printing
from within PE.  I don't know when they developed, but it was somewhere
    within PE.
Printing other things in PE that are minimally processed, I have heavy
(framing?) black lines bounding the image, in some cases only the leading &
trailing edge, in other cases on all four sides of the image.  They aren't
    desired.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • How do I turn off auto calibration of HP Deskjet 2542?

I swear this is the biggest scam.  Calibrating a printer should be an OPTION, not something that is done automatically.  But then HP might sell less ink, eh?
This is my second HP printer.  The first was pretty much crap.  I was hoping that the second would be beter, but no.  This is the last HP printer I'll even buy.
So is there a way to turn off the auto-calibrating "feature" on an HP Deskjet 2542?

    Hi @CJHames,
    Welcome to the HP Forums
Although the auto-calibration feature cannot be disabled, I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post serial numbers and case details.
