Call Me Dumb and Dumber . . . . truly network challenged!

Hi:
I'm so new to this network stuff. Thought I was happy doing the "techie" thing but this setting up a wireless network has got me floored. I've installed airport cards on my G4MDD, on my old G4 Sawtooth and on my iBook. With a (very) tight budget I've bought a NetGear router WGR614. Can't afford the Apple Base Station this year.
I don't have broadband where I live and use dial-up but as I really only need to be able to link my 3 Macs from anywhere in this old house, the sharing of an internet connection isn't a priority.
The instructions and CD that came with the router are totally PC!! Nothing to help me there. I've read and re-read my David Pogue Missing Manual and have poured over every magazine article and web site I can find but no luck in getting it (the router) recognized or seeing any of the Macs appear on any screen other than its own!
I am now into my ninth hour of frustration . . . . not counting the reading . . . and don't know what to do.
What I have done:
I have connected the router via an ethernet cable to the MDD. I have turned on Airport and selected File Sharing in all 3 Macs. I've said a couple of prayers over the router . . . didn't make a #@&*!! bit of difference.
OK, so what else would you expect you might say?
I know I'm doing something wrong and clearly missing something basic but can someone point me in the right direction???

1. Open the Network pane of System Preferences and note down your router's IP address; this will be to the right of Router when you are looking at the information of the Ethernet connection, and will be four numbers separated by periods, such as 192.168.0.1. Put the IP address into your web browser's address line to access the configuration page.
2. After doing this, you may be asked to provide a password; if so and you're not sure what the password is, look on the router and in the documentation which came with it to find out what it is.

On both devices, go to Settings>Facetime and turn off cellular calls.

Apple's solution is to restore software, but haven't gone there yet. Anyone successfully addressed this/these issues?

I should point out that it worked when the iPhone was set back to factory settings, but when restored with the backup, data/internet no longer works again, and I get the "Could not activate cellular data network" error message yet again.

I contacted AT n T also and explained about the problem, They suggested to monitor few more days...whether it is real network issue or not. But I am very sure it is NOT network issue because one day I was waiting for my brother at my office open parking space, And i called my brother whether he is ready at his place so that i can go and pick him, but he told it takes sometime...and he told, he will call in 15 mins, So i was at the same location (NOT even moved 1 inch also ), just sitting and listening music and after 30 mins, I called him back and asked Still not ready, then he replied he was trying me from last 15 mins and it is going to voice mail , I got similar complaint from others as well. You say it started on yours after upgrading to iOS 8. I've been on iOS 8.0 for quite some time and only recently did this issue spring up.
The one thing I haven't tried is downgrading it back to iOS 7 (which would be a shame, but if it's the only answer...)
I'll get back to you once I've tried that.

Random call to 911 and other issues

(Yes, mods I did search the boards for this issue and I didn't see it. Most people want to know how to call 911. I want to know how to stop my phone from doing it by itself!)
Hello, I'm a brand new Verizon customer and was so excited to switch carriers and pick up a new smart phone!
Now I'm not so excited to be a verizon customer with a new smart phone.
Last night I went to use my Samsung charge and of course, it was locked up (again). All the icons were inoperable and the screen was frozen. So, for at least the 5th time of the day, I had to remove and replace the battery and wait for the phone to reboot.
Within a few minutes, I received a call from a number I didn't recognize and the man on the other end identified himself as a county sheriff. He said they received a 911 hang up and it came from my number! I was so confused because I'd done no such thing. He said it was the departments policy to followup and make sure I was okay. I tried to assure him that I was okay, that my phone had been sitting on the table and I had NOT called 911. He then insisted that I give him my address so he could come over to make sure I was okay. Then I got scared....Really really scared since my husband was not home and I was alone and the call seemed so bizarre. I refused to give him any more information, told him I didn't believe him and hung up. I checked my call log and it didn't show any call to 911.
I was freaked out, so I called my city's non emergency police line and and city officer called me back. I told him what happened and he decided to call the number and call me back. A few minutes later he did.
It turns out that it really WAS a county sheriff and apparently my phone had made a random call to 911 and pinged a tower on the other end of the valley!
I've learned to live with pulling and replacing the battery multiple times per day. I've learned to live with the lack of battery life. I've learned to live with not having workable bluetooth.
After owning this phone for about 4 months, I already hated it for all the glitches and issues it has but now I am very very very alarmed that my phone makes random calls to 911 and hangs up !! You can be issued a citation and fined ! This I will not live with!!
Verizon, is this the phone causing this? Is it something in your network? How do I stop this from happening again?? This was extremely stressful for me and I can't have it continue to happen!

I can definitely understand your frustration regarding the scenario with the sheriff's office contacting you about a 911 call! I have completed some troubleshooting with the Charge, as I use this device myself. With this phone, if you create an additional lock with either a passcode or a pattern that has to be entered, there is a button on the bottom of the phone that says "Emergency Call." If this button is pressed, a 911 call, or any number that has been entered as the emergency number, is able to be dialed.
I see that you mentioned that you were in the middle of resetting the device because the screen was frozen. Do you recall if the screen was frozen on the lock screen when this happened? If so, you may have inadvertently pressed the button for the emergency call.
If you do not have a lock pattern or a pin code set up for the device, the standard lock (where you connect the puzzle piece) is the default. This screen does not have an option for an emergency call. If you have the additional lock screen set up on the device, you could remove it and set up a different number for the emergency call.
You also have the option of downloading a free application from the Android Market called "ICE," or "In Case of Emergency." You can set up this application with your own personal preferences. Press the Market icon and use ICE as a keyword search.
Below I have provided the steps on how to remove the lock code/pattern for you, if needed.
Removing the lock code/pattern:
Press "Applications" icon from main screen
Press "Settings"
Press "Location & Security"
Press "Change Screen Lock"
Confirm your current unlock code or pattern by entering it
Press "None"
To set up an emergency call, you can simply program the number as a contact, and then save the number as a speed dial.
Assigning Speed Dials
1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts.
2. Press the Menu Key, then touch More-> Speed dial.
3. A list of speed dials displays.Touch a speed dial, then touch a contact to assign the contact to the speed dial.
Please let us know if you are still having issues with your phone locking up and having to re-boot it by removing the battery. Do you notice any pattern about when this happens? Are you performing any specific function when the screen freezes?
Additionally, I want to clarify that any calls to 911 are not listed in your call records online or on your bill due to the fact that these calls are free. Your statement only shows billable calls, so this is the reason you do not see the call in the call log.

How do I remove my existing wi-fi networks/settings and create new network. Have lost passwords to the networks.

I have Imac that was upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion. Originally had an ATT Modem that with wi-fi to our Imacs. Original modem quit working and ATT replaced it with a different modem and wi-fi network was changed. During these changes and subsequent support(?) calls with ATT the passwords were changed and/or lost. Using an ethernet connection now which works fine but would like to go back to wi-fi. However, can't get into either of the previous wi-fi networks or make changes since we don't have a working password. How can I completely deletes the existing wi-fi networks and establish a new one? And, If I bought an Apple Wi-Fi base station, could I connect it to my ATT modem and then set up a network using the base station. At one time we were told that we had to use the ATT modem since we are on ATT DSL so I am not sure what will work with that modem or won't work.

Someone tried to FaceTime with me (wrong number so I declined then turned off the ringer) last night 10x --not sure if this has anything to do with the problem or not. Someone tried to call me today and sent me a text saying they got a fast busy signal. Later I got my daughter to call and phone worked just fine.Son called, phone worked. Then another friend called and got the busy signal. So I got my nephew who has at&t which is same as all other callers and he got a message saying call cannot be completed at this time. So it seems that only verizon can get through and not other networks.

Try a Reset: Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Note: You will not lose any data.
If no joy, talk to your provider.

Facetime call between Macbook and Iphone 4 failing.

I'm using OSX 10.6.4 and placing a facetime call to an Iphone 4 using iOS 4.1. The call goes through and connects and we are able to talk for 15 seconds or so. Then it freezes and I get a call failed notification. Any fixes for this? My firewall is off by the way.

Not sure what the fix is. I believe the FaceTime app for the Mac remains a BETA.

We publish a network speed and quality measurement application used on desktop, tablet and smartphone.
This application is called nPerf. It is available on desktop via a web browser at www.nperf.com, on iOS at ios.nperf.com and Android at android.nperf.com.
We are currently working on porting our solution for Windows Phone / Windows. The project is a universal project using Windows RT 8.1 (Visual Studio 2013 Express Update 4).
However, the project is currently "stuck" because we lack two essential information to identify the operator of the user: the MCC (Mobile Country Code) and MNC (Mobile Network Code), at least those contained in the SIM card.
Ideally, we would also need, in order of priority, the MCC and the MNC of the active connection (in the case of roaming), a DB signal strength of type RSSI or RSRP (more accurate than the number of reception bars displayed on the phone), the id of the cell
on which the connection is established (CellId) and the cell area code (LAC or TAC).
I have reviewed all the Windows RT 8.1 APIs available, particularly the namespace Windows.Networking.Connectivity and none seems to contain this information.
We would understand that it is not possible to access all this information but the SIM MCC and MNC are really needed and are available on other systems such as iOS or Android. It would really be a pity if we are not able to continue the development of this
application simply because these two information is not available ...
Would it be possible to tell us how to retrieve this information or, failing that, to give us the e-mail address or phone of a person likely to talk with us about this and identify possible steps to take to find a solution mutually acceptable?

Debugging and monitoring MPLS networks

I've had the following problem with a customer of ours and I'd like to know if there's any tools I can use in the future to better diagnose the problem if it may arise again.
The customer is a bank with hundreds of brnach sites. All of them are connected to the corporate via a MPLS network managed by a local TELCO company .
In the last ten days they have experienced long delays during logons of users in the branch sites . This delay has been initially thought due to new operating systems deployed on the clients ( XP ) . In fact there's a rollout of XP computers at all the branch sites .
Trying to troubleshoot the problem we have started looking at all OS related known problems but found nothing important.
Next I tried looking at the network connections with the few tools I have ( basically ping , traceroute and protocol analyzer ) but all seemed ok .
Having no access to the telco routers I monitored the corporate's switch ports to which the two telco router are attched .
Finally I found some packet discarded and could call the telco and having the routers checked.
They found a problem , they didn't told us what it was , and suddendly most of the problems were gone.
This was really tricky because a part from the slow logon we had no other mulfunctions . I found the problem thanks to a Microsoft tool to check group policy problem which point me to possible networks problem.
The question , after this long post , is ; is there any tool, agent , software I can install or use to check MPLS network efficiency having no access to the TELCO routers ?

havent not told us what the actual problem was it is kinda difficult to suggest tools. However IF this was an MTU issue then you should have used ping with the DF bit set to see how big a packet you could get over the mpls network. Let us know what the issue was and hopefully we can be a bit more detailed in our responses.

I have been hearing that you can make free calls to any mobile phones/land lines with the application called Fring. On the basis of SIP.
I have been trying to set it up and register with a free sip provider but still no luck.

Hi, thanks for responding. Yeah, the TV supports a huge variety of resolutions. It's a HD set, and was auto-detected by the iMac. I even tried manual resolutions across the board just to be sure, and third-party software aimed at making config less of the nightmare it was and proves to be.
I gave up in the end. I'm fairly technically savvy and up for a challenge but got very frustrated and angry at how hard it really is to get devices talking to each other. I took the DVI cable back to the store and got my money back, the Apple adapter I will have to sell on as I didn't keep the packaging and can't think of any other use for it whatsoever right now.
It's extreme but I decided in the end I'd rather go for the comparative if pricier simplicity of Apple TV, the set up of which was a doddle but I have an outstanding issue for now with the remote controlling the TV's volume only in an ever-upwards direction while scrolling menus!
But I'm happy converting my video files to Apple TV format, as I only wanted to be able to view video content from the iMac on the big screen and for that the Apple TV does the job nicely.
I'd be happier if Apple introduced support in iTunes for multiple libraries across different hard drives that could all be synced together! There's a third-party app that allows more than one library but you can only sync with one of them. My music drive is going to fill up rapidly now I'm going to have to start storing videos on there as well...

FIRST, call your carrier and ask if they have a local network outage. Also try moving a few miles from your current location to see if you have coverage elsewhere. Next, contact your carrier and get a replacement SIM. If that doesn't fix it take it to an Apple store for evaluation. If it is defective they will replace it.
