CALLING ALL EXPERTS - Connected TWO Actiontec Routers to use one as main and second as GUEST
Hello Experts-
I have TWO Actiontec Routers from Fios. I bought the new N one, and I have an old Actiotec that I was previously not using. So here is what I am trying to do...
I'd like to leave Router 1 (the New N router) as my primary router (comes from ONT via cat5 wire NOT Coax) and Set-up the second router off the first to be a guest router. So essentially make it a bridge.
I can't seem to configure it to work correctly.
Can anyone out there give me a step-by-step walkthru on how to configure this second router so I can have them both hooked up, seperate SSID, with one as the Main and the other being the Guest?

I'm basically wondering how to change the routers IP address and where the Disable DHCP is within the menus.

To change the IP address of the Local Area network choose:
My Network
Network Connections
Click edit on the row for "Network (Home/)office"
On the next screen click Settings
On the next screen you can change the LAN (192.168.1.1) address to something different.
On the same screen you can disable DHCP too.

Help, Issues Connecting two Wireless Routers
Ahead of time I would like to thank everyone for their responses and help. I tried to be as clear as possible. I believe I got all the details right. Some things are repetitive and might be a little confusing, but please ask questions for any clarification. Thanks for the help.
Current Routers:
1. Linksys WRT600N ---- Used as primary router. Connected to the 4 ports are 3 PCs and a wireless router. All three PC have static IPs I reservered, also have a static IP reserved for the WGT624 wireless router. DMZ is also enabled and destination is the IP reserved for WGT624.
2. Netgear WGT624 ---- WGT624 is connected to WRT600N through the WAN port on the WGT624 to port number X on the WRT600N . I was using Netgear WGT624 as an access point for a Xbox360 , a couple of macs and ubuntu netbook. This router recently died needs to be replaced.
3. Linksys E3000 ---- Recently purchased to replace the Netgear WGT624 that has died. I want to use this as my new access point. Having trouble setting up the settings for this router. I want the same setup as before.
Detailed Problem
I currently have the WRT600N located in the basement connected to a cable modem through the WAN port. Connected to the 4 ports on the back of WRT600N are 3 PCs and a Wireless router. Most of the settings on the WRT600N I left alone. The only thing I changed was reserving 4 IPs for the 3 PCs and the WGT624 wireless router. I also enabled the DMZ for the destination IP of the WGT624. I also opened a couple of ports.
The Netgear WGT624 that died was located on the upper level third floor. I was using it primarily as an access point. It was connected through the WAN port of the WGT624 to port X on the WRT600N which is located in the basement. Settings on this are a little different. On the WGT624 I disabled the firewall. I left both the Auto DHCP enabled and the DHCP server. WPA was enabled on the WGT624. With these settings on the WGT624 I was able to connect to a xbox 360 and a few macs wirelessly to the internet with no issues . I also noticed that the the internet IP displayed on the status tab on the WGT624 was the IP I had reserved on the WRT600N.
Recently the WGT624 died after years of usage. So I purchased a Linkys E3000. I want to have a similar setup as before with the WGT624. However I have been running into issues. Wirelessly I cannot get access to the internet through the E3000. The E3000 is connected to the WRT600N in the same was as the WGT624. The WAN port of the E3000 is connected to the port number X of WRT600N. On the status tab of the E3000 I seem to be getting a strange Internet IP address. 127.0.0.1. This I think is a loopback address, I am not sure? Same with the subnet mask of 255.0.0.0
So the problem is I want the keep the same setup as before if I can. I don't want to the any computers who connect to the access point to have access to any computers that are connected to the 600N.
I read on another thread I could connect two wireless routers together by connecting port X on the 600N to port X on the E3000. Then changing the internal IP of the second router from 192.168.1.1 to 198.168.1.2 and then disabling the DHCP server.
I really want to keep the same set up as before if posslble. More importantly I want to know why my setup prior, the WRT600N to the WGT624 worked with no problems. Why could I use the WGT624 as an access point and not the E3000? Should I switch the the two routers use the 600N as the access point and E3000 as my main router?
Thanks again.1. You have chained two routers. The WRT600N uses LAN IP address 192.168.1.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0. The Netgear is connected with the WAN port to the WRT (thus uses an 192.168.1.* address on the WAN port) and uses 192.168.0.1 by default on the LAN side. Your new E3000, however, uses the Linksys default 192.168.1.1 on the LAN side. If you connect the E3000 to the WRT600 without making any changes it won't work. A router cannot work if WAN and LAN side both use 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0. That's impossible.
2. Thus, the quick and easy setup to get the same as before would be to change the LAN IP address of the E3000 from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1. After that change you can connect the internet port of the E3000 to the WRT and everything works like before.
3. However, in particular because you need port forwarding and you do port forwarding through two routers I would recommend not to run two routers chained. I can't see why it is necessary for you to run two routers and two separated networks. The basic setup and an explaination why a different setup may be better is here. I think in your case it would make things much simpler and you have full connectivity between all your computers. You can set up a roaming wireless network, too. The only problem is that you will "loose" one port on the E3000 because you cannot use the internet port. -
Connecting two RV082 routers back to back
I'm looking for instructions on how to setup and connect two RV082 routers together with a crossover cable between their WAN ports.
This is to connect two separate LANS together via an ethernet connection. For staging we are setting everything up with a crossover cable in our shop. Ultimately the crossover cable will be replaced by a microwave link between the two LANS several miles apart. There will be no internet connection.Switches would have been a good alternative except we needed 8 ethernet ports, so 16 port swirtches would have been required. So the cost is about the same in this situation for 8 port routers.
We have the system working properly now.
This is what we did:
On both routers in "Setup: Advanced Routing" switch from "gateway" to "router" , enable RIP and set RIP versions for transmit and receive to RIPv1.
In "Firewall", disable Firewall
Then in "Setup: Network" make the following settings;
Router 1:
WAN1 IP to static static 192.168.10.5 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.252
LAN IP to 192.168.1.1 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
Router 2:
WAN1 IP to static static 192.168.10.6 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.252
LAN IP to 192.168.2.1 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
With these settings, devices connected to router 1 may have static addresses in range of 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.254 and should have default gateway set to 192.168.1.1
Devices connected to router 2 may have static addresses in range of 192.168.2.2 through 192.168.2.254
and should have default gateway set to 192.168.2.1
Experts may have some comments to make about firewall settings an so forth but this setup does what we want it to do. -

We use one windows machine and two mbp's (post 2012) at home. We have a modem *** router from a non apple vendor that airport utility finds and connects with absolute ease. But doesn't stay connected. The signal drops often, what can I do?
No, not all network clients -- only the two mac portables and they run together very rarely. The windows machine is hardwired to the modem router combo, and that's always sailing smooth. The mbp that is most used is perhaps 20 feet max from the router - and in another room. But it also happens when I take in into the same room as the router. On occassion, I have noticed while using network diagnostics, that one digit in the IP number sometimes appears to go awry. I then try to set up manually - and it works for a bit but is hugely erratic.
I rigged a hand me down airport express and set up a separate network for the two macs and it ran beautifully for some weeks, but that little piece is now dead and none of the retailers in my suburb seem to have one in stock. I don't want to be forced to buy an airport extreme and here in India, there's no trustworthy online ordering option.
The man from the ISP's been here several times and I don;t think it is a modem/dsl issue because the smartphone connects and the macbook drops when both are the same distance from the router? I am truly foxed and intensely irritated! :-( -
I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either. I have an iphone 4 that will not connect to 5ghz.
thank you!Your AirPort Express is already providing two separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but each band is using the same wireless network name.
This is the default setup for the AirPort Express, which is recommended for most users. The theory here is that devices will automatically connect to the best quality signal based on their capabilities and distance in relation to the AirPort Express.
It is possible to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then "point" devices at that network to connect. Some users swear by this option.....(I am not one of them).... but you might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Express
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options near the bottom of the next window
Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Name.....which will automatically add "5 GHz" to the network name....so you can identify it
Click Save, then click Update and wait a full minute for the Express to restart
Now you will need to "point" your 5 GHz capable devices at the 5 GHz network name. 2.4 GHz devices will connect to your "other" network name. -
Sorry if this is a bit naive. I have just bought my first iPad (Retina Display). I have WiFi at home but it has taken me ages to get on-line as I needed all sorts of codes, passwords, numbers etc.

I recently purchased two touches for use by two children. I used my itunes account and named each device seperatly. I cannot figure out why when I text one device, the message appears on both. Also, the address book is also synching in the cloud and is the same on both devices. Do I need to use different itunes accounts or is there a setting I missed that makes them seperate, likea phone would be?

I was able to only put the applications from my account on each specific touch (I have a iphone 4g). Hello I recently downloaded an app on my iphone 4s - Remote mouse- so i can control my laptop that is connected to my tv, it used to work fine and now the connection fails, I downloaded another app and the same problem occurs, its not the firewall and both phone and laptop are conected to the same wifi, i also tried to connect it manually with the ip address and still no connection, can you help??
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Then reset: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go.(No data loss) Try it again. -

is the signal so weak that is not able to go to ono room to the other ?Well, even if you have the first express set up to extend the network, the second express can only extend from the TimeCapsule.
Maybe you got walls of sheetrook in the way, or kitchen/bathroom tiles, etc, dampening the signal rapidly. -

Alternatively you can always manage your iPads (does not matter how many) with a single apple id and all reporting to your account under "find my device" service. Keeping an eye on all your units. Mine has four Seriously shauntana the splitter is easy, a simple click to changre feed and eventually you will damage the HDMI port or cable by taking it in and out. True you can only use one feed at a time nut you can only use one port on the telly at one time too. I used it on my old one port telly for PS3 and Sky and it worked a treat.

I just purchased an ibook for my mac for the first time and it started with two pages then switched to one with notes and i can't change it back. Anyone else having this problem?
Up the top where the three buttons are (red yellow green) are three images. Click on the third image that looks like a notepad (not the first which is a library book), and that should get rid of 'Notes'. To read using two pages make the window bigger.
