Camcorder as a web cam

I have a need to use my Panasonic HDC-SC700 as a web cam in my MacBook Pro 15" (2010 model). To be more exact I need to broadcast video with it to Adobe Connect.
Panasonic has no Firewire but HDMI so in a nutshell, what do I need to make the combination work? Panasonic has drivers for Windows but not for OSX.

It is a question of the Mac seeing the camera (having drivers)
The way firewire works the camera is going to be seen.
USB cameras are a bit different.
The options are:-
Any Firewire DV output (6 pin to 6pin) Camcorder
Any Firewire Web cam
Any USB cam that has Mac drivers and this Utility http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/
The chances are that any USB cam is going to have Windows drivers (if you need them for a Intel)

Is there an inexpensive web cam?

I am looking for an inexpensive web cam for my PB G4. I can get a PC one for $10 but the few cams i've found for mac are really expensive.
ideally i'd like video and audio but i will settle for video only.

Hello, Ian.... looking for an inexpensive web cam for my PB G4. I can get a PC one for $10 ...Depending upon what software you want to use, you can use many USB webcams with your Mac. However, a Mac driver must be available in order for the USB webcam to work with your Mac software. Expect fewer features and lower quality images from very low-priced USB webcams.
Moreover, some software, like iChat AV, require a Firewire webcam. If you want to use your webcam with iChat AV, you can use the iChatUSBCam add-on software to allow use of a USB camera. Whichever webcam you consider buying, check the system requirements of the software you plan to use for compatibility.
Your camera alternatives are explained further in iSight versus DV Camcorder or other web-cam. If you decide to use a USB camera, you can find links there to iChatUSBCam's website and to sites that offer Mac drivers for some cameras that do not ship with Mac drivers. (Some USB webcams do NOT have Mac drivers, so be sure a driver is available BEFORE you buy.) You can also check the link to John Kennedy's blog to see sample images showing the image quality comparisons.
Although not originally intended for this purpose, you can find a list of some available USB webcam features in iSight and the PC. You can try it, but probably not.
This Apple article http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2134 explains that a Firewire-connected, tape-based camera or camcorder mode will work.
If you don't have access to one that works, a simple workaround is to record your video with QuickTimeX Player (the v.10.x one from Lion). You can import that recorded video into iMovie for editing.
If your Mac OS is earlier than Lion whose QuickTime does not offer movie recording as installed, use QuickTime7 Pro for recording.

You are absolutely correct - iSights are expensive (here in the UK they are about £100) Using a camcorder is a good solution for occassional use except that they have the annoying habit of powering down at unexpected times when they are not actually recording. On the plus side they tend to have better lenses than even the iSight so work better in low light level indoors. There are also reports of regular use damaging the recording heads through spinning on a tape that is not moving. Not all camcorders now have firewire - a large number seem to only have USB.
There are some USB webcams that claim to work with Macs - not many - my understanding though is that they don't work with iChat only with Yahoo. This might also be the case with the drivers available at the site in my previous post.
At the end of the day individuals have to decide how much use they will make of a webcam and on which system then look at what is available or what they already have. The important thing is to do some homework before spending any money and check that new hardware will work with a mac and for what purposes.
While I agree that the iSight is seriously overpriced it is the best solution if starting from scratch as they are well designed, work flawlessly with a Mac and there are quite a few other applications that can use it too - iStopMotion, Delicious Library etc.
Me - in this case I'd keep checking out the drivers before spending anymore money.

External iSights are no longer available in the EU due to a regulation change about safe disposal.
Your choices are:
Any Firewire DV output Camcorder (6 pin to 6 pin)
Any Firewire web cam
Any USB Cam with Mac drivers and the iChatUSBCam utility
Check out their camera page for suggestions.
In fact iSights (external) are now in extremely short supply the world over. (No Apple store has any).
This would point to a new product or solution soon.

Web cameras and photo booth

I just picked up a Creative Live ! Cam video IM Pro.
The device is UVC complaint. However it will quit occasionally while in photo booth and I will need to unplug/plug from the usb port to get it operating again. This web cam stuff is all new to me. Can I use this device to record into Imovie ? I'm running 10.5.2on a mac pro.

Nothing directly with iMovie.
As shown in this Apple kBase article, you need an external (Firewire) iSight or other "IIDC" webcam for recording directly into iMovie with any external webcam. All IIDC webcams connect via Firewire, so no external USB webcam will work to record directly into iMovie.
You can work around this limitation by recording video clips with an application that can use USB webcams like QuickTime Pro. Then import the saved clip into iMovie for editing.
FYI, the built-in iSights in many current Mac models are the only USB webcams that work and allow live monitoring of what is being recorded directly with iMovie. EVERY external USB camera, whether camcorder or webcam, would need to record the video first and import that into iMovie for editing.

No, not with your external USB cam and iMovie. Using QT Pro or another app that can record directly from your USB webcam, you will be able to monitor the video action in that app.
Or do I have to import something I capture with the camera ?
Yes, when using your USB webcam and trying to edit with iMovie. To get video from your (or any) external USB cam into iMovie, you must import a previously saved compatible file.

Has anybody purchased the latest web cam for Apple. Review please.

I get great results with a 12-month old Logitech Pro 5000 USB camera. Prior to the purchase of this C2D Mac mini, I used it with a 1 GHz eMac running Leopard & an 800 MHz iBook running Tiger. Since the arrival of OS 10.4.3, support for USB webcams has been built in.
I was surprised that the eMac worked as it is an older one without USB 2.0.
Prior to the purchase of the Logitech camera I also achieved excellent results using a Mini DV camcorder which connects via Firewire.

It's got some good information and just as a parting comment, sometimes you get what you pay for, but w/the iSight, although expensive, has a lot to recommend, such as being designed by Apple, for the OS X system, having noise-canceling microphone, auto-focus and except for hooking up a FW camcorder (expensive and not nearly as simple to use), has the best resulting picture. If you want I'll post a link showing a comparison.

Recommended Web Cam?

I've just joined Skype and want to get hold of a web cam for my iMac – can anyone recommend a make and model that is Mac compatible?
I'm in the UK and so will probably be shopping at PC World or the net.

Also, sort by "Mac-compatible" (in the choices bar) here: http://shop.skype.com/webcams/ to see the ones Skype recommends (and sells) for use with Macs.

Can't figure out where to go to be able to use my web cam. Its not in my devices and printers area.

Firstly, uninstall the current version of Cyberlink Youcam and re-install it.
To Uninstall: Click Start >> type Programs and Features in search and select it from the list >> In there, select Cyberlink Youcam and uninstall it.
Once done, try using webcam with Skype or any other messenger you may have, or else re-install Youcam.
If the above does not work, do a System Restore to a previous working date when the webcam worked.
System Restore: Click Start >> type System Restore in search and select it any perform on-screen instructions to restore the notebook to a previous working date.
If none of the above work, open Device Manager, check if you have 'HP Webcam' listed under Imaging Devices category.
You would find the Product Number on the sticker in the battery compartment, will be similar to XT594PA#ABA.

I HAVE A SATELLITE L505D-G6000 RUNNING WINDOWS HOME PREMIUM 6.1.7600. WEBCAM IS BUILT IN USB2.0 UVC WEBCAM MANUFACTURED BY MICROSOFT IN 2006 SO APPEARS TO BE A BASELINE PRODUCT. BOUGHT 8 MAY OF THIS YEAR. WEBCAM WORKED PERFECTLY. NOW WEBCAM DOESN'T WORK. I'VE DONE ALL THE STANDARD UNINSTAL/RE-INSTALL OF THE DRIVER OR MORELESS THE "TOSHIBA WEBCAM APPLICATION". Perhaps you mean you have the Satellite L505D-GS6000? Let's try a reinstall of the main base drivers, then the webcam driver/app, one more time. Download and install these drivers in this order:
AMD/ATI Display Driver for Windows 7 (32/64) v8.634.1
Realtek Audio Driver for Windows 7 (32/64)(v6.0.1.5904)
Toshiba Web Camera Application for Windows XP/7 (32/64)(v1.1.1.6)
Then try the webcam again. Please let us know if it works, or if you get any error messages trying the above reinstalls. Good luck

Capture Web Cam image in APEX and Upload into the Database

Overview
By using a flash object, you should be able to interface with a usb web cam connected to the client machine. Their are a couple of open source ones that I know about, but the one I chose to go with is by Taboca Labs and is called CamCanvas. This is released under the MIT license, and it is at version 0.2, so not very mature - but in saying that it seems to do the trick. The next part is to upload a snapshot into the database - in this particular implementation, it is achieved by taking a snapshot, and putting that data into the canvas object. This is a new HTML5 element, so I am not certain what the IE support would be like. Once you have the image into the canvas, you can then use the provided function convertToDataURL() to convert the image into a Base64 encoded string, which you can then use to convert into to a BLOB. There is however one problem with the Base64 string - APEX has a limitation of 32k for and item value, so can't be submitted by normal means, and a workaround (AJAX) has to be implemented.
Part 1. Capturing the Image from the Flash Object into the Canvas element
Set up the Page

Upload the necessary components to your application. (The flash swf file can be got from one of the samples in the Samples folder. In the root of the tarball, there is actually a swf file, but this seems to be a different file than of what is in the samples - so I just stick with the one from the samples)

*Part 2. Upload the image into the Database*
As mentioned in the overview, the main limitation is that APEX can't submit values larger than 32k, which I hope the APEX development team will be fixing this limitation in a future release, the workaround isn't really good from a maintainability perspective.
In the sample applications, there is one that demonstrates saving values to the database that are over 32k, which uses an AJAX technique: see http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/apex/application-express/packaged-apps-090453.html#LARGE.
*Required Files*
From the sample application, there is a script you need to upload, and reference in your page. So you can either install the sample application I linked to, or grab the script from the demonstration I have provided - its called apex_save_large.js.
*Create a New Page*
Create a page to Post the large value to (I created mine as 1000), and create the following process, with the condition that Request = SAVE. (All this is in the sample application for saving large values).declare

Make the above conditional for request = button name so it only runs when you click Save (you probably want to disable this button until the data has been completely submitted to the collection - I haven't done this in the demonstration).
Voila, you should have now be able to capture the image from a webcam. Take a look at the samples from the CamCanvas API for extra effects if you wanted to do something special.
And of course, all the above assumed you want a resolution of 320 x 240 for the image.
Disclaimer: At time of writing, this worked with a logitech something or rather webcam, and is completely untested on IE.

Hmm, maybe for some reason you aren't getting the base64 version of the saved image? Is the collection getting the full base64 string? Seems like its not getting any if its no data found.
The javascript console is your friend.
Also, in the example i used an extra page, from what one of the examples on apex packages apps had. But since then, I found this post by Carl: http://carlback.blogspot.com/2008/04/new-stuff-4-over-head-with-clob.html - I would use this technique for submitting the clob, over what I have done - as its less hacky. Just sayin.
