Camcorder Compatibility with iMovie

I didn't really know where to post this, but i heard this type of computer is good for video editing, so . . .
I'm looking for a computer to use for only video editing, I have a Hitachi dz hs300a camcorder, and i wanted to know if this type of camcorder is compadible with iMovie.

I drove an 80 mile round trip today to return a Sony SR45 30 gig camcorder because it would not operate with IMovie. I looked on the list from support.apple.com and decided to buy a Panasonic SDR-H60 while I was there. I will be making the 80 mile trip again in the morning to return this one now because it won't work with IMovie either. Frustration level has peaked. This should be such a simple process.

  • Panasonic SD700 Camcorder compatibility with iMovieHD

I am considering the purchase of a Panasonic SD700 Camcorder not just for the reported image quality but because it has sockets for an external mike and headset. My only remaining doubt is its compatibility with iMovieHD. Is is simply a case of transferring the SD card from the camcorder to my Mac or does the camcorder output have to be converted into an iMovieHD-compatible format? Help would be appreciated. Regards.

There have been a number of responses to my initial query but none seems to address it directly. I have both iMovie 09 and iMovie HD. The Panasonic model in which I am interested is the SD700 which only uses SD cards. I want to buy the most compatible camera possible to use with either of the above applications. I am trying to avoid having to do conversions to another format before I can edit. I am a newcomer to video & camcorders trying to avoid an expensive purchasing error. Further guidance would be appreciated and thanks to those who have contributed so far. Victor

  • Problem with iTunes compatability with iMovie and iPhoto

I purchased some music from the iTunes music store and wanted to use that music in a homemade DVD I made. I also have tried using the purchased music when I play a slideshow in iPhoto. In both instances, an error window popped up saying that I needed to launch iTunes and authorize the computer to play the song... Well I bougth the music on the same computer and it is authorized. I typed in the authorization anyways and then after that iMovie and iPhoto both pop up with an error saying that it can't use the file.
Thinking it might just be one song file... I have tried this with many purchased song. I have had the same problem with all of the purchased songs I've tried.
Are some purchased songs not compatable with the iLife applications? How can I fix this problem? I'm running iLife 05 and I have installed all of the updates, including the most recent...
    iTunes 6.0.2
    iPhoto 5.0.4
    iMovie HD 5.0.2

Do you need to update Quicktime as well?

  • Does the Canon DC310 DVD camcorder works with iMovie '06?

I want to buy this camcorder. Will it work with iMovie '06?
    Thanks

What Karsten said and . . . . DVD cams are just about the worst choice of ANY of the various types of cam out there. A DVD is an end product, not intended to be edited at all. Shoot the movies this afternoon on the DVD cam and play it back tonight on the TV.
You need to do some homework about your software and camcorders and what will make life a whole lot easier for you. HINT - a miniDV cam with Firewire.

  • Camcorders Compatable with iMovie '09

    Good Day, All;
I'm in the market for a camcorder, and based on forums here and there I am steering away from Sony and JVC for some known problems communicating with iMovie.
As of now I have it narrowed down to a Panasonic HDCTM20K and a Cannon HF200. I see both claim to be good to go with iMovie '09, yet some people still seem to be having difficulties.
Any comments would be most appreciated.
    Cheers.

In my experience, Sony, Panasonic and Canon are all solid choices.
I prefer the SDHC card models. Some people prefer the hard disk models. Stay away from models that record to DVD.
    [Pick one off this list|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290]
I will stay away from recommending specific models, because the last one I bought was 2 years ago.
If you see a lot of problems with Sony on the boards, that is probably an artifact of their huge market share rather than any inherent problem. In my experience, JVC and Samsung have been much more problematic, but they may be getting better.

  • Canon Legria HF M406 Compatable with imovie?

    Hi!
If someone could give me some basic advice it would be very useful. I am looking at buying an HD video camera and would like it to work as seemlessly as possible with apple and iMovie. Will iMovie import video directly from a Canon Legria HF M406? My other chioce of camera is the Panasonic HDC-SD90, and as far as a i know this works well with iMovie, am i correct?
    Thanks in advance,
    Nina.

Above is Apple's list of compatible camcorders. The HFM41 is listed, so your camcorder should work fine.
That is, if you have iMovie 11. It records in AVCHD so if you are using Imovie 06 there would be a problem. The panasonic is also a fine camcorder.
So both camcorders seem to be ok for iMovie 09-11.
You will, of course, need to make your decision based on cost and what you are using them for. I have found that for basic uploading to the web, say YouTube, any modern camcorder pretty much works.

  • Does a Canon Vixia HF R21 HD Flash Memory Camcorder work with iMovie??!!

I checked Apple's list of compatible camcorders with iMovie and this camcorder is not on the list.... But this camcorder seems so similar to other camcorders that I want to know if it works with iMovie on my Mac even though its not on the list?!?
I need to know SOON because I need to start filming tomorrow and this camera is available at my local Best Buy now....
    Thanks

    AGNJ,
If by 'formats' you mean 'drivers' then....maybe. Here is a simplified description:
Mac tries to bundle all the drivers it needs with the install, and so there are typically no drivers available as they come with the OS. For video cameras they don't supply Mac 'drivers' but instead rely on iMovie since all new macs come with iMovie. Apple bundles the drivers with OS X, and in essence that means your camera either works with iMovie or it doesn't. So you have to check the list from Apple.
You would think that you could hook up the camera and copy off the HD video files and then play them in Quicktime. But Quicktime doesn't play many AVCHD formats from the various camera companies (e.g. videos from a Sony camera). (I've found that the free VideoLAN Player does, though). So what most folks do is to use iMovie to import the camera's videos, then use iMovie save as a movie of some kind, encoding into some quicktime friendly format.
On PC the cameras are bundled with some kind of movie editing program that can use the camera's drivers. Hope that helps. Others chime in and correct me

  • Canon Legria HF20 - Compatibility with iMovie

I have just ordered a Canon Legria HF20 camcorder. However, I have a concern.
I just checked Apple's offical list of iMovie 09 compatible camcorders, and the PAL version isn't listed as a compatible camcorder. However, the NTSC version is, which is called the Cannon Vixia HF20. I am not sure if the reason why the PAL version isn't listed is just because they haven't got around to testing it.
Can anyone confirm whether the HF20 works with iMovie? Am I safe to assume that if the NTSC version is compatible, then the PAL version will also be compatible

  • Does any camcorder work with imovie???

I recently received a Sony Handycam DCR-R45 and it does not work with my computer. I am running imovie '06 and considered upgrading to '08 but after reading all the woes on here about the sony handycam i'm thinking of returning it. Does anyone have a camcorder that works well with a mac? I am only using it to take video of my 12 month old! This really shouldn't be so hard! PLEASE HELP!!!!

[These cameras work with iMovie 08|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1014]
Your camera is not on the list, so I would take it back.
Nothing will work with iMovie 06 except miniDV (tape) and HDV (tape) through Firewire.

  • Camcorder compatibility for iMovie

    Hello all,
I would like to get some advice on a good camera to buy for creating short PSAs and editing them with iMovie. I've been reading the posts on what cameras not to get but not really any on good camera to purchase.
    Please help!!!
    Thanks!

this is like asking where is the best place to ski in Colorado. You'll get tons of responses . . . but alas here's my 2 cents
Start on ebay. get a tape based system, non HDV and point, shoot, view on your tv. You'll spend less than $200, maybe only 100. All the Japan models will work, JVC, Canon, Panny, Sony.

  • Digital Camcorder compatible with iMovie &/or Final Cut Exp

Hello Everyone. I am in the market for a camcorder that I can use with my new imac. Have spent too much time researching whats out there as far as digital camcorders and am completely confused!! I would prefer one with a hard drive such as the sony DCRs but have found some places talk about incompatibility and others compatibility. My next choice was the Canon HV10 but it uses the Mini DV tapes. Any help, suggestions is greatly appreciated.

    hey there,
welcome to the forums. iMovie is built to work w/ DV25. that is DV or HDV signals recorded to tape, usually miniDV tape. there are workarounds for using hard disc cams, but the process takes longer & because hard disc recording uses a more highly compressed signal than DV or HDV your image is likely to suffer in quality.
i use and own Sony MiniDV & HDV cams & have had no issues w/ capture, editing or converting analog to digital w/ them.
    good luck.

  • USB compatibility with iMovie next version

Do you think, that Apple will developped an new iMovie version, USB compatible ?
New Tapeless camcorder like SAMSUNG VP, JVC Everio, have no FireWire connector !

    Hi
Don't think so. But You never know with Apple.
This is no place for at list of whishes for iM6,7,8,9,etc
    But they are legions.

  • Canon Compatibility with iMovie and/or FCE

I recently purchased a Canon FS200, flash memory camcorder (standard def) and have some difficulties importing into iMovie (it recognizes and imports some clips but then decides to freeze-can't even force quit iMovie from that point) and FCE does not even recognize the device.
I am within the return period (purchased at Best Buy). Should I get out of this Canon situation altogether? Is there a DV brand that integrates more consistently with Apple?
I have all the updated hardware and software, processing power, and memory that are needed, so that is not the issue. I am just looking for some direction, or confirmation that this thing WILL work, I just need to keep at it.

Good, because I like the functionality of the camera, and the convenience of recording to flash media. I took a look at some possible differences between imported and non-imported files. I found only one thing, it is inconsistent. In my original attempt to import, approx. 8 of my files (clips) imported, and they ranged from 30 seconds to 8 minutes. The ninth one froze up. After a reboot (I had to resort to that) I was only able to import three files before a freeze. The fourth one (the one that had previously registered as imported) now froze. Both "freezing" culprit clips were of average size compared to the rest. I am not sure about audio settings because I do not adjust anything that complex when recording.
THEN, I tried to use FCE to import the same clips. FCE does not even detect my camera.
I did try to unplug all other external devices too. No luck.
I have never installed any drivers for the camera. It seemed to work for a little, before this freezing behavior. Is there typically software needed to simply import to a app like iMovie or FCE? I didn't think so, but really cannot think of another troubleshooting angle.
