Camcorder connection

Hi,
I have two camcorders, a Samsung PAL and a Canon NTSC, both use mini DV.
Connect them to iMovie, the Mac only recognises the Samsung camcorder.
The Canon ZR500 needs no drivers and is compatible. I have used various versions of iMovie, from 11 on my iMac to version 2 on an old G4.
Switched cables, tried different start-up routines, with no success.
In the past, I have used the Canon camcorder numerous times on my old Apple laptop, but have since got rid of that.
Anyone got any suggestions?
Cheers
Rich

I'm not sure what version of iMovie you currently use, however please look over Apple's article on which cameras are compatible.

BTW there is also an iMovie forum, if no one on this forum can help please feel free to post there too.

  • Camcorder connection issues (not the simple type)

Note: Also posted in OS and Hardware forums
I have a Panasonic PV-GS400 camcorder that my Mac Pro refuses to recognize. First a list of what I have confirmed.
    1) There is nothing wrong with the camcorder (It will work with an iMac at my work running Leopard)
    2) There is nothing wrong with the cable I am using (Connected a friend's cam corder using it)
    3) There is nothing wrong with my firewire (I have a LaCie drive and have been able to interface to a different camcorder)
    4) I have reinstalled quicktime w/o fixing the problem.
    5) I installed my orig Tiger OS on my firewire drive and still see the same problem.
    6) Both iMovieHD and FinalCut fail to recognize the camcorder.
    7) All of my software and firmware is up to date.
    8) I have confirmed all settings on my camcorder (It worked with another mac)
Now for the information regarding my mac:
    2x3GHz Dual Core Xeon
    OS X 10.4.11
    Model MacPro1,1
    Rom Version MP11.005C.B08
SMC Version 1.7f10 (Don't know what this is)
I appreciate any suggestions, there are only 2 things left to try (as far as I can see)
    1) New OS
    2) Try a Firewire 800 cable
I have searched the net quite a bit over this issue and I feel I have done my homework with no success. I have also heard some disturbing comments / BS regarding certain camcorders "just not working" with certain Mac / PCs. Is this really true?
    Again thanks for any thoughts.

I thought this initially myself, but when I had the other camcorder working with my mac I went through the following steps
    1) Use Canon Camorder (iMovie works, I can see the camera in the profiler)
    2) Plug in the GS400 and nothing happens (Can't see it in the profiler)
    3) Use Canon Camcorder again to make sure my cam is not killing the firewire and everything works as in step 1.
Thank you very much for the suggestion, I also tried a 30 min reset a couple of days ago and no difference.
Do you know if there are any firewire utilities for looking at plug in events and such?

  • Camcorder connection problem

I connected my Sony DCR-HC21 mini DV tape camcorder to my MacBook Pro with a USB cable and iMovie does not recognize it. Nothing happens. How do I import? Do I need a different cable?

According to the instruction manual at sony.com, you have to use the firewire ( ilink ) connection. I had the same problem transfering from a DVR-TR330 from a friends wedding.

  • Camcorder connected but will not import or show video

I have a Sony Digital 8 camcorder that used to work well with imovie. Although I have it connected and the blue screen states that the camcorder is connected, imovie will not import the video nor will it show it playing. When I rewind or fast-forward, it will show the counter but I will not get a picture. The play, fast forward and rewind buttons in imovie will operate the camcorder but no image or sound. The import button shows that it is being pressed but still no results. Aill I get is the blue screen with its message of camera connnected.
I have used different tapes, verified that the tapes have content, rechecked the connections and reset the permissions. Could use any and all advice.
    Thanks

    Hi Richard
In rare cases this can have happened.
    A. Try Your Camera on another Mac. OK - Then skip the rest !
    B. Control the 6-pin end of Your FW-cable and the connector on Your Mac so
    that it is not broken.
As You see it is Non-symetrical BUT it can be forced in upside down and if
You use back side connecter it is even easier while it's hard to see what's
    going on.
If this has happened = You have a broken Camera.
It will be controlable by iMovie
will record and play normally via lens/analog connector
but - NO import or export via FW-connector
    Analog/digital chip blown. Expencive repair.
    Yours Bengt W

  • IMovie transfer to DV camcorder - connection lost

For back up purposes, I export iMovie films to DV using my Sony DCR-HC85. Done it without problems until a few days ago.
Recently updated iMovie to 5.0.2, and everything was fine.
All the sudden...when the camcorder is on "Play/Edit" (for import DV) iMovie connects fine. But when I turn to "Camera/Tape" for exporting to DV, iMovie shows connection for a few seconds but immediatly connection is lost.
Trashed "com.apple.iMovie.plist" but the problem persists.
iMovie 4 app is still installed, may it be of any importance?
    Appreciate any help !

    now, about the laugther:
I'm NO engineer, I lived a long time from my "bad mouth" (=advertisment business) ...
now, when someone was very, very ... I mean very precise with "wording", these were mostly engineers... what I called "some piece of wire", was a "double twisted paired single isolated ethernet quality cable".. you understand..?
when I wrote "set to edit", I HOPED, you understand my .. "lax" wording..
you HAVE to be precise, otherwise a person as me would engineer a Mars lander, which calculates the distance to ground in meters... yards.. foot... "some" ... nautic miles ... anyhow ...

  • Odd ... Log & Capture won't open with a particular camcorder connected

Actually ... Final Cut Pro protests in general ... sometimes completely locks up with the dreaded spinning color wheel when this one Panasonic Camcorder is connected. The moment I turn it off or unplug it - FCP returns to life!
I have in the past captured video from this camera, but it has always been a little sketchy - takes a few tries to get log & capture to work with it. Seems it's not working at all now.
Only thing I think I did different in the past was use a different FW cable.
Any reason a particular camcorder could prevent FCP from working?

I plan on trying the other cable (am in Mexico now & that cable is back in the US).
What struck me as odd though, and the reason I thought there might be some camera-specific reason, is that even with the other cable it was always finicky.
Although I could eventually get it to work using that other cable, it almost never worked on the first try (the mini-DV Panasonic PV GS2). Using my Sony Hi-8 Digital cam, it's always 100% reliable, regardless of what cable I'm using.

  • Force iMovie to open when camcorder connected??

    Hi all
Is there anyway to force iMovie to open (instead of iPhoto) when I connect my camcorder? I guess it's not a huge deal, but I LOVE saving clicks. I thought I had read somewhere that you could set what program would open when certain devices are connected, but now I can't seem to find any information anywhere on how.....
    Thanks!!

I think you can do this in Snow Leopard. Open the Image Capture application.
Connect your camera to your computer, and turn the camera on.
Select the camera in the Devices list at the left of the Image Capture window.
From the “Connecting this [device] opens” pop-up menu, choose iMovie.
If you don’t see that pop-up menu, click the “Show device settings” button in the lower-left corner.
I can't test this because my camcorder already works with iMovie.

  • Firewire camcorder connection

After working the first time I used it, the Imac (lion) will no longer recognize my camcorder via firewire connection. Is there a fix for this?

    From the Micro$oft Knowledgebase article:
    >This problem occurs if you connect a 1394a or 1394b FireWire device to a 1394b port. This problem occurs because Windows XP SP2 changes 1394b ports to S100 speed when you upgrade.
Are you using a 1394b Firewire port? Most folks are not. And, even if you were, the miniDV capture negotiates a speed that is appropriate for the device. Since miniDV transfer speed is slightly less than 30 Mb/s the Firewire hub will always connect at the S100 or ~100 Mb/s speed.

  • Camcorder connectivity?

just wondering if there is ANY way of transferring video from a Sony camcorder to notebook other than using firewire cable?
    I understand i need a 800/400 4-6 pin cable?
Problem is living i live in Indonesia & a credit card will not be accepted. Even purchasing a new camcorder will not solve the problem as Sony models include USB 2 & mini HDMI connections
Only other option available is having the cable purchased possibly in Australia & shipped which means a long wait till we can watch our sons first birthday video

Make sure the camcorder is powered up and sending a signal (sometimes called monitor mode) before you connect the USB lead.

  • Camcorder Connect to imovie

Ok for some reason a few weeks ago I used the same camcorder, same computer, same connection cord. And my camera was reconized by my computer and I was able to import the footage. Now I try the same thing, imovie or final cut doesnt reconize the camera!! please help.

Well there is nothing there because the express card is listed under a PCI card. The express card is recognized when inserted but that is it will not notice the camera attached to the express card. since i couldn't test the card i went and got the card replaced, but still with no luck.
Would returning the express card and buying a firewire 4 pin to 9 pin be worth it? (given that i can get one since i can only find one company that makes them and they are a wholesales only) This way i can connect it directly to my mac's firewire 9 pin port.

  • XP  patch for Firewire camcorder connection

This may help people whose XP wont detect their camcorder on Firewire, or have other problems with it.
(I expect this has been on the forum before, but I couldnt find it on a topic search.)
Apparently, Service Pack SP2 can interfere with Firewire, & Microsoft issued a patch to solve it.

  • MacBook Crashing when Camcorder connected...

Bought the Insignia 720p HD camcorder from Best Buy. Read that plenty of people have used it with their Macs, albeit they had to download alternative movie editing software etc...
The problem is: When I connect it via USB 2.0 to my MacBook the MacBook crashes. It pops up with a bulletin that states I need to hold down the power button or hit the restart key to reboot my Mac. When I unplug the camcorder and restart, no problems. When I try to restart with the camcorder still plugged in, it states the same every time until I unplug it.
Driver Problem? Other issue? Any ideas? Obviously some people are using this with a Mac so I don't understand the issue...

  • Any results with Leopard (10.5.7) and camcorder DV firewire connection?

    Hello all,
    Issue:
My Panasonic pv-gs150 (SD MiniDV Camcorder) connected to my MBP via firewire is not recognized by system profiler (red warning). In turn, FCE4 and iMovie 09 are unresponsive to the camcorder once attached.
Thus far I've isolated that it is NOT
The camcorder (captured for years on iMovie 06 on my Tiger ibook)
The firewire cable (swapped out twice)
The firewire port on MBP (External HD via Time Machine is recognized and works)
    Anything else I should try??
I understand the typical responses to camcorder forum questions from countless searches. (firewire not USB, VCR mode, proper steps to capture) But have seen that Leopard seems to be culprit to many Mac users with DV camcorders.
I've read that v10.5.2 was good to go with no DV issues or there was a patch or some sort of work around. But all my leads are drying up here. I can't find a clear response anywhere. Or am I losing my mind on this one...?
    Thanks for helping!

    Hi
I have exactly the same problem on my brand new iMac.My Sony DCR-HC19SE DV camcorder does not work at all: not listed on System Profiler which gives WARNING Firewire devices cannot be listed. iMovie 08 does not see it either. There was no problem using Tiger on a G4 PPC: the Sony was seen by all relevant software (Toast, HyperEngine AV,) and Profiler.
Is this progress a la Apple??
Please help, I am stuck. Already done reset of Firewire bus, vram reset, etc. as recommended on another forum: no success.
This is very frustrating and Apple seems to have a problem in Leopard 10.5.7 with firewire according to other forums.
Hope somebody at Apple can give a solution to this one!!!
Frustrated because Apple was believed to be better than others!!!
MAYBE I REVERT TO LINUX OR TIGER???

  • Connecting FireWire Camcorder

I have a Sharp vl-wd255, and I bought a firewire cable from Radio Shack. Nothing happens when I connect it. When I have iMovie HD open and try to import video, it says that there is no camcorder connected. I tried the camcorder and cable on a modern Gateway, and it doesn't detect it either. When we tried to the cable the cable to Radio Shack, they said that it is probably a USB camcorder. I'm now sure that it isn't. We tried again, and they told us that our firewire port may be turned off, and we need to enable it. I don't know how to do this. The camcorder works fine. Does anyone know how to enable the firewire port? Or, is the problem the firewire cable?
    Thanks.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Your camcorder does indeed have a Firewire connector (marked as an iEEE1393 port on the rear panel), but unfortunately, that doesn't give any assurance that it will work with a Mac. Indeed, there seem to be a number of camcorder manufacturers who's products are either only partially compatible, or not compatible at all. As a consequence you may find that even with the benefit of a new cable, the camcorder isn't recognised by iMovie or Final Cut.
If that turns out to be the case, not all is necessarily lost. I found with my JVC that iMovie would often report that there was no camcorder when I was trying to import, and that I could get it to connect by switching off the camcorder, restarting iMovie and switching back on. Sometimes unplugging the cable and then reconnecting it worked. Manually starting playback on the camcorder before clicking 'import' in iMovie also sometimes worked. When exporting back to tape, iMovie always reported no camcorder, but if I manually started the record, on the camcorder instead of letting iMovie trigger it, iMovie would then export perfectly.
Similar reports were common from users of some other JVC miniDV models, as with Samsung and others.
Unfortunately, if you cannot get the software to recognise the camcorder by any variation of switch on/connection sequences, it would then suggest that the Sharp wd255 isn't compatible and that you may need to replace it with a model that is. Most Sony miniDV camcorders work well, Panasonics seem to and most Canons. It would be strongly recommended that if you do buy a new camcorder, you shop from a source that will allow an exchange should you find that the Mac won't recognise it properly.
