Camcorder recognition by software

I am trying to use premiere elements 13 with my Sony DCR-HC40E camcorder. This camcorder is not listed as being unsupported but it is not being recognised by the premiere elements 13 program. Is there anything that I can do or is the camera never going to be recognised and therefore make it impossible to use the Adobe software for capturing and editing my video?

From what I have read of your camcorder, it is a miniDV type.
Now in Premiere Elements 13, Adobe has discontinued DV data and HDV data capture firewire into any Premiere Elements Capture Window.
As I see it, you could explore capture firewire into another program and then bring the captured files into Premiere Elements 13 with its Add Media/Files and
Folders from their computer hard drive save location.
DV - Windows Movie Maker or WinDV WinDV
HDV - HDVSplit HDVSplit 0.77 beta
The DV and HDV data capture firewire into a Premiere Elements Capture Window exists in many versions earlier than 13.
We are not Adobe here. Rather user to user. Adobe has the final say on the feature set decision for a given version.
Please let us know if you have any questions or need clarfication further on this matter.
Thank you.

The problem is that there are probably few dry cleaners running Macs. It would be a big commitment for a developer to enter that market. As a potential user, I'm sure you would like it. From a developer standpoint, I would need 50 such dry cleaners ready to buy at $1000 each just to even consider it. I have some time to develop this year. Should I go after 200 million potential customers, a tiny fraction of whom might spend $5-10 apiece, or those 50 dry cleaners. I know that all of those 200 million people are running the correct operating system for my software. How many dry cleaners have Macs and $1000 to spare? I could go cheaper but then I would need more dry cleaners. Why wouldn't they just use some cloud based service instead?

  • Camcorder recognition on iMAC

For some reason, I'm not understanding the Mac way of things...
I recently added an external firewire 800 hard drive to my iMAC. I have a Panasonic PV-GS120 camcorder that was being recognized perfectly by iMovie prior to installing the hard drive.
The other day, I exported a video from Final Cut Express 3.5 to the camcorder with the scratch disks being located on the Hard Drive.
As mentioned above, iMovie was recognizing the camcorder prior to working in Final Cut Express, but now whenever I go to Share or even turn the camcorder on, iMovie does not recognize it at all.
I was saving iMovie projects to Macintosh HD before installation
I am saving FCE projects to external firewire hard drive
Camcorder to iMac via 400 Firewire cable
Hard Drive to iMac via 800 Firewire cable
Why is iMovie no longer recognizing that I have a camera for anything?
    Can anyone help? Thanks.

That is OK. This is what the forum is for.
As Martin mentioned, you can have two FW ports, and only one bus, it's a pain I know, especially since iMacs have no way of adding more.
You must reformat your drive to Mac OS Extended if you plan on capturing at all to that drive. Most devices come formatted to the FAT file system. This has certain data transfer limits which make it impossible to capture video. In order to reformat your drive, first move EVERYTHING off of it as it will be erased. Next, open Disc Utility: Finder> Applications> Utilities> Disc Utility. Select your blank external drive and then click the tab that says ERASE. From the drop-down menu select MAC OS Extended, name your drive, now click ERASE.
Now that you have the properly formatted drive, try a few of the other things I suggested above. Quick Time is the Mac version of Windows Media Player, only far more powerful and capable for professional editors.
    Good luck!

  • FCP 5.1.2 upgrade now no communication with Sony FX1 HDV Camcorder

Hi - I recently upgraded to FCP 5.1.2 then tried to capture footage with my Sony FX1 HDV camcorder, but the software indicates that it cannot initialize my device. The only way it will work is when I change the capture settings to HDV Apple Intermediate Codec, but then this setting requires rendering.
The camcorder works fine in iMovie, so I know it is not that. If I reinstall FCP 5.1, then everything works fine, but not with the 5.1.2 upgrade.
I've also tried "trashing" my FCP settings for a fresh start, but nothing changed. I checked the settings on the camera, but they are fine. Again everything works in iMovie. Finally, I also removed the recommended QT files and reinstalled QT, but no change.
Any suggestions? I'd just stay at FCP 5.1, but I now have several projects in 5.1.2 that are not backward compatible.
    Thanks!

This worked for me. Probably something in this sequence caused Firewire, FCP or the Digital Mystery Gods to re-align:
    1. Simplify the Firewire routing among external hard drives. On its own this didn't produce a positive result, but it may have contributed somehow. In particular, avoid multiple loops among hard drives. Not a likely suspect, because the Z1U was directly connected to the front Firewire jack.
    2. From the FCP Install/upgrade/crossgrade disks, load the latest QMaster software. It's in the Extras folder and is called AppleQmasterNode.mpkg.
    3. Reload from the same upgrade disks a fresh FCP. It won't have the latest enhancements—and that may be an issue—but it will reload. Uncheck the rest of the options when loading this in. FCP seems to be the only program with a connection issue.
    4. Update the reload. Software update now brings FCP 5 up to FCP 5.1.2 but I would swear I saw 5.1.3 in the update download. Perhaps not. The result says 5.1.2 and now it recognizes what only iMovie HD had recognized before; the Z1U camera.
I know a lot of folks seem to have parallel-sounding issues. A lot of advice seems to focus on "toss the prefs", "fix the permissions", "sprinkle the chicken blood", etc. but none of those had any effect on this issue for me.
The one thing I THINK worked was the QMaster/FCP second re-upgrade.

  • The most user friendly HD camcorder to use with MacBook Pro/Final Cut?

I have been researching what type of equipment would be best for filming and editing a professional looking film. I have been reading reviews for HD camcorders as well as video editing software. From everything I've read Final Cut Pro appears to be the best choice for software, but I can't seem to figure out which camcorder will work best with a MAC and Final Cut Pro. I will be starting from scratch so I'll be purchasing a camcorder, computer and software. I also want to make sure that I can take a class to learn to use the software. My total budget will be around $4000.

    Hi,
You can also try researching and posting on video production type forums.

I also bought Final Cut Pro 5, a powerbook G4 17", and an (SD) video-camera about 5 years ago for a little project overseas. It worked very well. I used a 500 GB external HD connected by firewire for footage and scratch. I also used the offlineRT setting when importing footage into my project as it used about 1/9th the space as it normally would. When I was finished editing I was able to automatically switch all the low res footage with the original high-res stuff. (I'm not sure if this option is still available for HD footage). I'm now considering starting a small business and upgrading my final cut to the latest final cut studio, my old powerbook for a new loaded macbook pro 17", and a new HD POV-style video-camera.

  • What are some differences between PSE8 and PSE11?

Canon Vixia HV40  HDV tape-based camcorder
    MY CURRENT SOFTWARE:
Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, with Adobe Bridge CS4
Apple Final Cut Studio 3 (includes Final Cut Pro 7)
    Apple iLife 2009 (includes iPhoto)
Recently, people in my hometown began planning an event of local historic significance. A group of elderly men who worked on a major industrial project (steel fabrication in a local shop) here are about to go on a bus trip to see some of their work. Most have never journeyed the hundreds of miles to see what became of their efforts. Some of these men are veterans of WW II and Korea, just to give you an idea of their age. The bus tour is expected to happen in mid-November.
Typically, I shoot photos in JPEG format and catalogue all photos in iPhoto 2009. However, for this occasion, given it is a once-in-a-lifetime event, I am seriously thinking about switching my Rebel over to RAW format. I want to approach this trip as a project with the end-product being archival quality storage of the images I capture. To catalogue the photos, I was seriously thinking about borrowing a few pages from Peter Krogh's book "Digital Asset Management for Photographers" (2009, 2nd Edition, O'Reilly Press). I recently had a chance to skim the book over, and noticed a chapter on how to structure a workflow using RAW-format photos using Adobe Bridge. I have briefly thought of purchasing Lightroom, but that's too rich for my bank account. Since I have the Rebel (given to me as a gift about 13 months ago), the MacBook Pro and Photoshop Elements with Bridge, some questions came to mind:
(1: I am considering either using Photoshop Elements 8 with bundled Bridge CS4 to handle the RAW files (and to possibly store them as DNG files) or upgrading to Photoshop Elements 11 to do the same. This would stretch my budget. Does Photoshop Elements 11 come bundled with Bridge anymore? If so, is it functional for what I want to do with it?
(2: Does anyone on this forum use Bridge to handle RAW files? If so, are there any online tutorials/demonstrations you would recommend?
(3: I assume it would be fairly easy to take all RAW files of photos shot on the trip, transfer them into Bridge CS4, and then convert them into JPEGs so they could be imported into a iPhoto library (now standing at over 46,000 photos). Are there any obstacles/possible problems in this transfer process I should look out for? (I would be worried about what would happen to the metadata)
(4: If I store the RAW photos from this trip as DNG files using Bridge, and if I subsequently purchase newer software such as the latest Lightroom or CS6, will I be able to open up this trip's archive in the newer software without loosing any metadata or organization?
(5: I have been viewing the photography tutorials on Lynda.com, including the titles taught by photographer Ben Long. Mr. Long did a title on the Digital Rebel T3i, which is very similar to my Rebel T3, as well as his "Shooting on the Road, from Gear to Workflow". Are there any other Lynda titles I should review while my account is still active?
(6: What's up with this Photoshop Elements / Premiere Elements bundle? Does anyone here use it? If so, what are the advantages over the Photoshop Elements upgrade?

Well, we've been back from Saint Louis for over a month now. Sorry for the delay in reporting this.

This video shows an excerpt of a small number of the PDM crew visiting the Arch for the first time, at sunrise. (We arrvied by bus this night before.)
An update on my Photoshop Elements experience. Adobe's DNG converter and Photoshop Elements' batch converter both worked like a charm. I was able to take the CR2 files from the Rebel, convert them to DNG, and then use PSE 8 to batch-convert them to JPEG. I impported the JPEGs into iPhoto 2009 with the date/time metadata intact.
I have yet to open any of the files in Adobe Camera RAW, but I want to do that after the New Year. I'm tied up with other work right now and don't have the time.
Here's a little something extra to show you how remarkable this trip was:

  • E71x, Ovi Suite 3.0.0, and Outlook 2010 Contact Sy...

I was unsure whether to post this here, or in the E-Series Forums - I believe this is primarily an Ovi issue, though.
I've had this e71x for about four months now. In all that time, I still have yet to find a lasting solution to my contact sync problems. It's always been something - device recognition, drivers, software updates... just name it.
When Ovi 3.0. was released, I thought, 'Maybe this update will resolve the problems, finally'. Well, It did - for maybe two syncs. Then we were back to errors. Specifically, error code '8004fd02' (see attachment).
That's what I see every time I try to contact sync. It seems to be a problem with the online Ovi, because every time I sync via the Suite, then check Ovi.com, I have a stack of seemingly duplicated contacts. And I don't mean the same person, listed a couple times, with slightly varying detail labels: I mean the exact same entry, repeated half a dozen times, but only in Ovi.com. The only pattern concerning which ones get duplicated, as far as I can tell, is a recent update. Everywhere else my address book is, by and large, updated accurately, although Ovi and Outlook do seem to occasionally diagree on semantics.
That's about the gist of it, at the moment *crosses fingers*. I just need to straighten that out so I don't have a dozen or more extra contacts to delete online and on my phone each sync. The Suite is consistently recognizing my phone though, so that's progress...

    Outlook 2010 32-bit
    Ovi Suite v. 3.0.0.284

    Thank You.
P.S. I don't need to hear for the umpteenth time about 'unplugging and reattaching the phone', or 'checking for software updates', or 'making sure I have the drivers installed'. I've had plenty of time to check the basics by now -

  • I have ca. 30 pdf documents I need to search for keywords; how can I do on my MAC?

I have ca. 30 pdf documents I need to search for keywords; when I open these documents in Adobe Reader on my MAC, it shows a Search tool; however, when I search for keywords I know are in the document, none are found.  How can I do a keyword search?

Do you know if the text has been OCR recognised? Are the original documents "scans"?
An easy way to find out, if you can select an individual word or letter? If you are selecting a whole block of text then the document will need to be put through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software first to enable you to keyword search.

  • Printing dates on photos

I posted a question about the ability to use IPhoto to print dates on pictures in July of 2008.
I received one reply that shareware called Acorn was available to do this.
I cannot find any such shareware and the suggestion that I make a book to get a date printed on a picture is not a solution, not even close.
I know that some people think that printing dates on pictures is ugly, but there are also many people like myself that happen to think the ability to put dates on pictures is really nice. Matter of fact, when I bought my Sony HI Def Camcorder last year, software for doing this was included for doing this on Windows. Now I dont like to go there and I am having a hard time trying to figure out why its so horrible for Apple to not include the ability to print dates on pictures in IPhoto. No one is making anyone print the dates, just give us the ability to do it if we want to. In looking at the forums, I see several who are also struggling with this problem with no solution in sight.
Can't someone please help out on this issue. Perhaps taking the windows software and making a Mac version. Thanks so mulch for your help. This is really a frustrating issue and will not go away.

In order of price here are some suggestions - and links:

    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    [Pixelmator|http://www.pixelmator.com> ($60 approx.)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Scanned pdf file-how to edit/translate

    Hi,
I am not very good at working with computers/but pretty good at messing them up...Anyhow, I have a Mac OS X version 10.5.8 and I received a file that I need to translate into my own language (my own translation, no need of computer aid in translating), it is a scanned pdf file. How do I manage to put a cursor in a file like this? Do I need a "character recognition" something software or is it so easy that I can't figure it out?....Thanks for any help/advice you have regarding this,

I have downloaded the free trial version of Elements 9 and am trying to look at / edit some video I have from my camcorder.  Other software is able to play the files but Elements can't load the video on to the time line  as it says it is an AVI file and requires a CODEC to be able to use the file.

  • Importing widescreen video comes in as 4:3 in Premiere Elements 4.0

When I get my media from files even though its saved as 16:9 it comes in in 4:3 format. I use a Panasonic DVD camcorder and its software to bring the video in (Adobe doesn't recognize it on the camera). In the Panasonic software it's 16:9 but in Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0 it's 4:3.
    Any ideas?
    Matt

    Kevin Kearney,
I looked into your Panasonic SDR-H40 specifications. From what I read you have a Hard Drive Camcorder with 40 GB hard drive and with a video capture format of MPEG-2. Although it says that you can also record to SD or SDHC card, I will assume for now that you are recording to the comcorder's hard drive.
I do not have any hands on experience with the above, so the following are my observations from what I have read. However, I do have experience with the use of Premiere Elements 4.
    1. What was your Premiere Elements 4 preset when you brought the DV AVI version of your .mpg into Premiere Elements 4 and what was the "Fields:", Upper Field First or Lower Field First? Premiere Elements has a preset special for hard drive camcorder so that your "Fields:" are automatically reversed from Upper Field First to Lower Field First. So, you may want to look into that aspect.
If you are working with PAL, check out:
    Welcome Screen Project Presets
    PAL
    Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorder
    Widescreen
    2. What software did you use to convert your .mpg to DV AVI? Was it MPEG Streamclip? I have used that software and it does an excellent job.
    3. How are you judging quality? Have you burned the project to DVD-VIDEO and are judging the quality of its TV/DVD playback? That is the best judge. When the DV AVI version is on the Timeline is there a red line over the Timeline? With DV AVI I would think not. If there is, you could try Rendering the Timeline (Edit Mode) by pressing Enter, wait for the process to go to completion (red line turns to green line), and see what that looks like in the Monitor. This rendering JUST gets you a decent preview and does not impact the final product DVD-VIDEO. The process can be very time consuming, but you do get a better preview before burning. During the process temporary Preview Files are stored on your computer, location depending on how you have your scratch files set up.
