Camcorder recommendations for QTSS

Hey all,
Don't know if this is the place to post this query, but here goes:
My boss has asked me to set up a live streaming setup (with quicktime broadcaster and QTSS). I want to use a DV camcorder for the increased quality, but we're not going to be recording to DV tape (don't need to.)
Problem is, many camcorders have a sleep funcion that kicks in if the camera is not in "record" mode.
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get around this, or any recommendations for camcorders that don't go to sleep?

Well, mine's a Canon GL1. But the same "trick" worked on older VHS models I have, too. And I've been in situations where DJs and such were perplexed by this, and taking the tape out worked for them, too. Honest. Try it. Report back, please -- I'd be surprised if it DIDN'T work.

  • Camcorder recommendations for use with MBP?

    Hello all,
I could have sworn I posted this earlier but I can't find it.
I'd be very grateful indeed for any recommendations and hints for a MBP compatible Camcorder from those who use one on a semi pro basis with the MBP. I'm a bit unfamiliar with the technology as it's exploded since I last looked. I need one that is PAL compatible with good picture quality and around the $900 range. PAL, then picture quality, then weight are the main factors in that order.
    Many thanks is advance.
    Cheers.

Thank you all very much indeed for taking the time to reply. Very much appreciated and very helpful. I've narrowed down the choices significantly - PAL compatibility seems to be the minor sticking point - difficult to find PAL compatible cameras in the US - I thought it didn't matter any more, but apparently it still does.
    Thanks very much.
    Cheers.

  • Recommendations for compact Camcorder / Digital Camera combo?

Now that I'm 2 years into fatherhood, I'm finding that I have specific digital habits for which I'm hoping to get some recommendations for a product. Basically, I use a decent Sony camcorder to shoot DV, which I edit in iMovie into little videos. I also have a few digital cameras (point-and-shoot and SLR) to take a big range of still photographs. But I'm getting tired of carrying them all around with me.
What I'm hoping to get is a new product that's small, has good video capture, and still takes good still photos. And most importantly, I need it to work seamlessly with iMovie and iPhoto. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm really just looking for something that I can put in my pocket and shoot video or stills of my son when he does something cute!
    Thanks!

You might want to check out Sony's latest Cyber-shot Digital Camera, the DSC-W300.
It's a point and shoot with video in HD. If you have a nice HDTV, you'll be able to playback the footage easily. I don't know the size of the file for importing into iMovie but your memories will look great.

I have a sony W1 5mp, not really used the video function much

From what I have read Mini DV tape seems to be better quality
    than DVD or
Hard Drive in that price range.

  • Prosumer Camcorder Recommendation

I have been using a Sony DCR-VX2100 for five years now, and want to make the jump to HD and also away from Mini DV tapes to avoid capture from tape (and moving parts). The 2100 has been the perfect camcorder for our purposes-capturing summer camp action...some low light campfires, drama productions etc. but also compact enough to take out in the field. Any recommendations for the new camcorder? Canon? Sony? Models? Where to buy? Thanks in advance.

    G_Stray,
I am in exactly the same boat as you are....Been using the vX2000 for years now and it is time to move on......
Looked all over for the "recommended cameras" discussions page without any luck...
I was actually going to ask the same question in this forum as I am editing in FCP and want a camera which is compatible ..... which would in turn make this the proper forum for camera recommendations .....
Really am leaning towards the Sony EX-1 (thus my price range) .
Also looking at the Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme card. Wondering how many of you have that card.
Want to shoot something that I can play on my 55" Samsung LCD TV...and get my moneys worth out of both a quality camera and my HD LCD TV.

  • Camcorder recommendations

My 13 yr old grandson has been making and editing videos for a number of years. He uses a Macbook and Final Cut Express to edit his films. He films action videos with two or three "actors" both indoors and out. His camcorder until now has been a Flip but it is time to upgrade. The new camcorder must have an external mic jack (and perhaps there are other must-haves that I am unaware of, eg, lights???). budget for the camcorder is $500. Can anyone recommend a particular camcorder that is Apple compatible. Family members are looking to buy camcorder accessories for Christmas presents so any recommendations for those are also appreciated.

I'd suggest the following model lines for your stated price range, but you will have to do your own research to see what specific models best meet your requirements.  There are models in each line under $500 that have inputs for external microphones.
    Canon Vixia HF series
    Sony HDR-CX and HDR-XR series
    Panasonic HDC-TM and HDC-HS series.
I can also recommend the Canon HV40 and its predecessors the HV30 and HV20.  However they are HDV camcorders and while the HDV format is still very much in use it has largely been overshadowed by AVCHD camcorders in the marketplace.
At a minimum, make sure the camcorder is an AVCHD or HDV camcorder.  If those logos are not on the camera and/or in the manual then beware. (Beware if the specs only say H.264, MPEG4, AVC or HD but  don't actually specify AVCHD or HDV.)
Also, you are correct in specifying an external mic jack; this is a requirement for any decent video.   The other thing I'd recommend is a good tripod with a fluid video head.  Make sure it's a good sturdy tripod.  I am partial to Manfrotto tripods (for example the 190XB legs or 055xdb legs and 701 head or 501hdv head) but the most important thing is that the tripod be sturdy regardless of brand.  A cheap tripod that isn't sturdy will quickly be a wasted purchase.  The other starter accessories I'd suggest include a UV or Skylight filter for the lens (to protect the lens from dirt & fingerprints), a case and a spare battery.
One more thing ... may I suggest B&H Photo Video.  They are an exellent vendor whose knowledge, selection, prices, delivery & reliability are top notch.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with B&H in any way except as a long-term, happy customer and I do not receive any compensation of any kind for recommending them.

  • Recommendations for HD camera?

I want to import high definition video into my computer from a camcorder, but I want to do it 'live' without first recording to tape or hard drive. Do all HD camcorders allow this? Does it matter if they have only USB and not firewire, or does either work just as well? I plan to import video using BTVPro, since it allows time-lapse recording. Does anyone know another program for mac that does time-lapse (since BTV has not been updated in years).
I'd like to hear recommendations for which camcorders send excellent high definition video output via firewire or USB. Do any of these camcorders have the feature of digitizing analog video inputs, again without first recording to tape or hard drive? thanks

My post above has a typo and I meant to use the word "can't" (not can).
If you're trying to capture directly from a camera using a "pass though" you'll need Firewire.
iMovie 7 (part of iLife 08) does support some USB cameras but I doubt it could do a real time HD capture and most of them use MPEG-2 compression to store your file.
You'll need at least a dual 2 GHz processor (G5 or Intel) to even view the files and a direct capture would require the fastest Mac made (even it may drop frames).

  • Does anyone have a camcorder recommendation?

Does anyone out there have a recommendation for a mini-DV camcorder in the $400-500 price range that will work well with iMovie 6? I assume firewire is required. MacMall has several cameras that say they are Mac compatible but don’t have firewire. What’s up with that? Does this mean they expect you to import via USB? Some have iLink but say no firewire. I thought they were the same or similar. Your recommendations would be appreciated.

I am looking for a new camcorder as well in the same price range. Been looking at the Canon Elura line or a few Sonys. Just upgraded to iLife 06 and would like to get a new camcorder. Ideally, one that would have analog a/v inputs as well. I have lots of analog tape to convert to digital and bring into iLife as well as planning on shooting new footage and would like the best compromise. Any specific models I should be looking for and/or steering away from? Otherwise, I'll just get a Mac compatible digital camera and get a 3rd party VHS to digital converter...Any thoughts?

  • Recommendations for a new monitor?

    Greetings,
I'm looking for a new monitor for my Powermac G4 450 MHz AGP (sawtooth).
I'm currently using a Formac Gallery 1740 after 6 years it's starting to faded out on me.
I'd really appreciate any suggestion or Recommendations for a new one.

I'm using a 17" LCD, Acer model AL1706 on my G4 400MHz AGP. Was plug 'n play and has been flawless over the years. I'm sure the current model numbers are different.

  • Need a printer recommendation for a small office

hey folks, hoping someone might be able to suggest a recommendation for our business. We’ve had an OkiData color laser printer that’s lasted over 6 years but it’s been giving us some trouble over the last year and yesterday it stopped printing with an error we can’t resolve. Would have to bring a tech in to fix and we’d basically already decided that once this thing bit the dust we’d move on to something else. It’s time.
We are looking for something in the $200-$400 range, would consider going a little higher if it was clearly worth it. We want something that connects wireless, prints quickly and reliably in Snow Leopard over an Airport Extreme network, decent color print quality is important but doesn’t have to be photo quality (we have an HP Photosmart for that kind of stuff), and it needs to have reasonable printing cost per page. We don’t print a tremendous amount of stuff, but we probably go through 100-200 pages a day and it adds up.
Was looking at the HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 wireless and that looks like a nice unit except half the people who buy one hate it. Looks like HP quality control is lacking and if you get a good unit, great, but the odds are good you’ll get a lousy one.
Also looking at the Brother HL-3070CW, but reviews say it has a high consumable cost.
Basically, the more I look into this the more I head spins and now I've got myself wrapped around the axle and don’t know what to do.
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

I would steer clear of the 500 express. Since you seem to be new to cisco products, I would use the opportunity and buy what most of your potential customers already have. Get yourself a pix/asa and a 2900 series switch as first poster suggested. If you are interested in certifications, you will need to learn the command line interface. The 500 express will do you no good as it is all gui. This is only my opinion of course. Oh, and did I see not expensive and cisco in the same sentence. :)

  • Recommendation for maintaining pricing in CRM when R/3 is also in landscape

    Hi,
in out context we have already SAP R/3 in the landscape, all the pricing in done in R/3. lot of custom pricing routines are also written in r/3.
now we in the process of implementing CRM and plan to do Quotations in CRM and replicate in SAP R/3 . what is the recommendation for such a scenario.
do we replicate all pricing conditions/procedures in CRM? do we need to re-do all procedures in IPC?
can we re-determine pricing in R/3 so that we can avoid such work in CRM? we are using configurable products in R/3.
please share your thoughts/best practices and any document will be of help.
    thanks
    RH

    Hi Swaroop,
The Assignment of Buisness Partner classification from CRM to R3 is purely based on Classification
    so your initial Entry
I chose B as classification & Z001 as an account group which is a copy of 0001. System takes it.
    was taken by the system
now when you tried to make another Entry by the same Classification
chose B again & this time Z002 acc gp (copy of 0002), and system does not allow?
it checks for the Existing Classification and so does not allow the same
Delete the Previous Entry and then Try Entering the New Entry
    The System shall Take it
    Hope it Answered your Queries...

  • Any recommendations for a recovery software for my lost photos on my external drive?

Would like recommendations for a reputable recovery software for my lost photos from my external drive that I used with my MacBook Pro.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • What are Best Practice Recommendations for Java EE 7 Property File Configuration?

Where does application configuration belong in modern Java EE applications? What best practice(s) recommendations do people have?
By application configuration, I mean settings like connectivity settings to services on other boxes, including external ones (e.g. Twitter and our internal Cassandra servers...for things such as hostnames, credentials, retry attempts) as well as those relating business logic (things that one might be tempted to store as constants in classes, e.g. days for something to expire, etc).
    Assumptions:
We are deploying to a Java EE 7 server (Wildfly 8.1) using a single EAR file, which contains multiple wars and one ejb-jar.
We will be deploying to a variety of environments: Unit testing, local dev installs, cloud based infrastructure for UAT, Stress testing and Production environments. **Many of  our properties will vary with each of these environments.**
We are not opposed to coupling property configuration to a DI framework if that is the best practice people recommend.
All of this is for new development, so we don't have to comply with legacy requirements or restrictions. We're very focused on the current, modern best practices.
Does configuration belong inside or outside of an EAR?
If outside of an EAR, where and how best to reliably access them?
If inside of an EAR we can store it anywhere in the classpath to ease access during execution. But we'd have to re-assemble (and maybe re-build) with each configuration change. And since we'll have multiple environments, we'd need a means to differentiate the files within the EAR. I see two options here:
Utilize expected file names (e.g. cassandra.properties) and then build multiple environment specific EARs (eg. appxyz-PROD.ear).
Build one EAR (eg. appxyz.ear) and put all of our various environment configuration files inside it, appending an environment variable to each config file name (eg cassandra-PROD.properties). And of course adding an environment variable (to the vm or otherwise), so that the code will know which file to pickup.
What are the best practices people can recommend for solving this common challenge?
    Thanks.

    HI Bob,
As sometimes when you create a model using a local wsdl file then instead of refering to URL mentioned in wsdl file it refers to say, "C:\temp" folder from where you picked up that file. you can check target address of logical port. Due to this when you deploy application on server it try to search it in "c:\temp" path instead of it path specified at soap:address location in wsdl file.
Best way is  re-import your Adaptive Web Services model using the URL specified in wsdl file as soap:address location.
    like http://<IP>:<PORT>/XISOAPAdapter/MessageServlet?channel<xirequest>
or you can ask you XI developer to give url for webservice and username password of server

Hi. Your computer can be upgraded to either Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6. 10.6 will be much easier to find and will be less expensive. Leopard is not required prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard.
