Camcorder tapes converted to watch on Apple TV-convert to which format/size

A friend has asked me to transfer several old sony camcorder tapes to DVD. He also has an Apple TV and wants to store the tape footage as a digital file, so he can watch on Apple TV.
I have a Mac Pro and FCE4. What is the recommended file format and size I should produce video files for Apple TV. On a large cinema screen tv, the footage has to be of a reasonable quality. I was thinking about 2 - 3 GB per 90 mins of footage. I am new to producing files for Apple TV, so any help much appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Matt

I could be wrong but I thought that an AppleTV output format was built-in with Apple's video editing software? If you use that you should have no issues.

  • Transferring 12 yr old camcorder tape to IMac...

I just found out IMovie allows me to transfer tape-based camcorder tapes to dvd! But my 12 yr old Sony camcorder doesn't have a usb port/cord, just the red/white/yellow and S-video cords, which don't plug into my new IMac's usb ports. Anyone know what I need and where to get it to make this happen? THANKS!

You'll need a "DV Device." A DV Device can be a DV camcorder, DV VTR or DV Converter that has both analog and Firewire ports.
You connect the playback device's analog outputs to the DV device's analog inputs (with the Yellow [video] Red [audio right] and White [audio left] cables), then connect the DV device's Firewire port to your Mac.

  • How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that it can be played and streamed from my Mac?

How can I convert DVD- video into Apple's format so that I can play the content on my Mac and also stream it to my Apple TV? A few years ago, I transferred all of my home videos onto DVD but now would really like to put these onto my Mac and stream them through Apple TV to watch on the "big screen". Any advice would be most welcome!! Thanks

    MPEG Streamclip.
Apple do not have their "own" format. You need to convert your DVDs to H.264 though.

  • Digitized Camcorder Tapes, Edited by iMovie, Recording to DVD

I recently had a commercial firm digitize some 20-year old 8mm camcorder tapes that I would like to edit and put onto DVD's.  They advised me that editable digital copy would not fit on DVD's and so I provided a portable hard drive.  The tapes that had a full 2 hours of video came out with about 28GB of digital content.  I hope to use iMovie for editing purposes on my iMac, a new experience for me.  What puzzles me is that my DVD+R blank disks claim to be able to hold 4.7GB of data or 120 minutes of video.  Assuming that editing may discard perhaps only 25% of the 120 minites of video, I have a hard time understanding how editing 28GB of video is going to fit on a DVD that claims to hold only 4.7GB of data in spite of the fact that it also claims to hold up to 120 minutes of video!  I would be most grateful if someone could explain this apparent discrepancy between DVD data capacity and video capacity.  Will I have to chop up a 2 hour video into smaller bits or is there something about editing that will render the end result in a form that will fit on a DVD?

    Worry not.
Digital video can take up to 13GB per hour, which is why you need lots of space for iMovie.
iDVD compresses this to the standard DVD delivery format of mpeg2 which, as they have correctly informed you, is not editable.
iDVD is not concerned at all with the size of the files it receives from iMovie, only the length. A single-layer DVD can hold 120 minutes of video but this includes titles, transitions etc. A double-layer DVD doubles that.
iDVD offers a choice of encoding settings:
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • Convert AVCHD Progressive To Apple Intermediate Codec?

Is there a really simple way to take AVCHD Progressive footage (1920 x 1080 at 50 fps) and convert it into Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC, 1920 x 1080 at 25 fps)?
I ask because when I connect my Panasonic HC-V700 Camcorder to iMovie '11, all I see are these "No 60p" icons over the AVCHD Progressive clips.

Hi, guys. I met the similar problem last month. I recorded many 1080 50p MTS footages by using my Panasonic TM700. I like editing videos with iMovie to share with my family and friends. But I found iMovie can't surpport 60p Import. I had tried different ways to import to iMovie, but I failed. Fortunately, my a friend found a blog post from goole and helped me to convert 50p AVCHD into Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC, 1920 x 1080 at 25 fps).
    The link is http://www.editavchdmac.com/make-1080-60p-mts-editable-imovie-mac/.
Here I hope it also give you a big help.

I have a camcorder (canon vixia hf R100) how do I convert the signal so my computer (imac-g5) can read it ?

Sorry, but I could not find anything re. the ilife 05 compatibility with cameras or camcorders, so you might be better off asking your question in the iMovie forum:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie
Make sure you indicate in the subject line that you have iMovie 05 and your model Camcorder - something like: Canon Vixia HF r100 and iMovie 05 on a G5 PPC - compatible?

  • TS2972 I am having trouble with my homesharing when watching my apple tv

I am having trouble with my homesharing when watching my apple tv.  I am not sure if it is apple 2 tv or just apple tv.  It is smaller.

While playing any song on your iPod, tap the artwork to bring up the scrubber bar and additional controls. On the left hand side is a option for repeat. You want to make sure this icon is white (meaning it is set to Off). If it isn't tap it either one or two times to change its current setting.
    Any luck there?

  • Trouble with flickering after converting AVCHD files to Apple Pro Res 22

    Hi guys.
I have figured out that Apple Pro res 22 is the best format for my AVCHD files.
But I am having trouble with the files after converting them to this format.
Every 60 frames I have a blurred frame.
This results in a flickering effect when watching the clip.
The original MP4 clip (AVCHD) plays fine on the Mac but when I convert is it flickers.
I have captured a still shot of the frame here
    http://www.willpower.net.au/DOWNLOADS/FrameError.jpeg
Here are the settings I am using for the conversion
    http://www.willpower.net.au/DOWNLOADS/Error.JPG
Here is the converted file in Apple Pro Res 22 format with the flickering

I'd appreciate any help that you can offer.

Actually I think I might have found the answer.
After diggin deaper into the camera manual I have discovered that the setting I had it on "Full HD" actually is interlaced not progressive. Even though tha badging on the camera says Progressive"
So I think something got lost when converting the files to apple pro res.
I just shot a 10 sec clip on "Full HR" which is the progressive function and it converted nicely.
I'll come back to this post after shooting and making a little test movie today.
    Thanks for your help.
PS. I wonder what codec it actually shoots in. Apparently it is not AVCHD but MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression (I thought that was AVCHD)

  • How can l get audio only from my Apple TV 3 to output through Iphone 5 using Airplay or something else so l can watch my Apple TV and listen to it through my iphine headphones without waking the family at night

I am wanting to remotely listen to the audio form my Apple Tv3 (about 13feet away).
I would normoally jusy plug in a headphone extension cable into the TV but it does
not have a headphone output jack.
I was thinking it would be the best option to simply have the audio stream to my iphone 5
thus allowing me to watch my Apple TV late at night without waking the family,
I was wanting to use the iphoine 5 as the audio sort of like a remove headphone reciever.
If l could get airplay ro play the audio from the ATV3 to the iphone5 then my guess is that
would be the best solution.  Basically use the iphone 5 as an Airplay receiver / server.
Any other alternative would be great to hear.  Any solution that gives me good quality sound
without cables running all over the family room.

Not possible. Audio can be output to airplay enabled speakers via ATV settings and then headphones connected to them.

I have purchesed a few movies on my apple TV account eg. Superman. Unfortunelty I cannot get these items to download to my computer so I can upload them to my iPad or iPhone. Movies that I have brought my computer however are automatically download and are available to watch on apple TV. I am using the same apple account for all of my apple devices and I have clicked on downloads on my computer and yet the purchesed movies on apple TV do not appear.
I have checked in the iTunes store on my computer for the same movies I have purchased on the apple TV, but the option to download isn't there, only the option to buy. What do I do?

    Got it!

When watching my Apple TV (3rd gen) the picture jumps a few frames every few seconds, this happens when I rent a film or play back from my new Mac Pro, my Wifi is the Airport Express.

These may be different issues, but lets look at rentals first.
Poor motion can result from mismatched output. If your source is 24 or 30 fps you should set the output of the Apple TV to 60 Hz, for 25 fps content use 50 Hz.
Additionally motion software on the TV itself can cause the picture to jump, check your TV settings and turn off any motion settings in use,
