Camcorder to fcp

Hi,
I was hoping someone could help me.. I have a JVC GY-110U High Def camcorder that i shot a short HD video on. When i try to import it into fcp, it cannot recognize the camera.. Is there a sneaky work around i could use? or am i just missing something? If you could let me know i would appreciate it.. I know my two decks are too old for high def, and i am just trying to get it logged in. Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.

Which version of FCP are you running? Anything prior to FCP 5.0 will not see that camera.

  • Wich camcorder with FCP Studio2 ?

    Hi
I am undecided between Sony HDR-FX1 and Canon XH A1 to use along with MacPro and FCPStudio2... I am looking for a camcorder in this price range and these two seem the best options... However, FX1 does not have XLR connection ( I use to record audio separatly, so this is not an absolute no go), on the other hand Canon XH A1 seems to have some issues with FCP...
Any Ideas? about these or other camcorders in this price range to work on this environment ?

    Thank you Rob !
I decided upon Canon XHA1... had real good feedback about that camcorder

  • Problems recording from my camcorder to fcp

    Hi
I wonder whether anyone else has experienced this problem and can help?
Due to a shortage of funds I am using my Canon HV30 camcorder to put a voiceover onto my fcp film. This worked fine the first time but now when I try and use it I get the message
'The selected input device is unavailable, it may be in use by another application etc etc.'
I have checked under About this Mac and firewire and my camcorder is present.
I have tried unplugging everything, turning off the imac, removing all the cables and rebooting and then putting all the cables back in.
And starting up fcp with the camcorder already on (and starting up fcp with the camcorder set to off and then putting it on)
    Version of FCP is 6.0.4
I have the audio/video settings set to
    Seq preset HDV 108050I
    Capture present HDV
    Device control firewire basic
Under the A/V devices tab I have settings
    Playback output none
the different output for edit to tape/print to video box is checked
video HDV 1440x1080) 50i (I'm based in the UK)
Are my settings correct for using my cam as a mic?
I have tried using both camera mode and playback mode to tape - neither work.
If my audio/video settings are correct - should I try trashing the FCP preference files?

Definitely trash your preferences, and see if that helps. Then, read this post about HDV FCP problems!

  • Can't mount Digital 8 Camcorder in FCP 6? (TRV120)

Any ideas?  Have tried all the standards stuff..
    VIEW>Refresh AV device
Start up FCP with and without digital 8 camcorder plugged into Mac's Firewire 400 port
    "Firewire basic", "non-controllable device"
Re-opening log & capture window too many times
I can't get this Sony TRV120 to mount, got it used recently so I want to make sure this isn't a problem with the camera's firewire port soon rather than later so I can go back to the seller but I'm guessing it's not the camera...any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi
Also make sure that Camera is connected to mains adaptor - not only on battery !
Else - my long long list
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera or A/D-box work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Best Camcorder For FCP and FCE

Right, so I have a rough budget of £500 and I need the best camcorder I can get for money. It must be compatible with FCP and Express. Can anyone out there help me with my predicament??
    Many Thanks

Better information, you'll get better responses over the next few days, keep reading.
Best for me includes excellent low light functions and excellent glass. I need neither digital zoom nor auto gain.
Decide on an acquisition format by determining what you expect to do with the movies you create. You may not need full 1080 but can get by with 720. Resist cameras that record in a codec that must be transcoded before editing.

  • Best Low Cost Camcorder for FCP?

I'm going to take back a Samsung D453 camcorder because it has time code breaks during capture. Does anyone have any recommendations for a low cost DV camcorder that is supported by Final Cut Pro?

Actually, recording timecode on a tape might have been a good idea with analog crash recording, but it does not make sense on DV camcorders. If nothing else you end up recording twice on the tape which increases wear on the camera heads and doesn't do much for the tape either.
As an alternative to blacking tapes, simply record the first 30 seconds or so of the tape without images. Use a bars and tone if the camera can generate one. Otherwise use the FCP version. This gives you enough preroll area for capturing all material after this point.
Once into the tape, just make sure when you stop recording, the heads are in a position that will allow them to pick up the timecode and continue on. As long as you do not rewind and review the footage you are good to go. If you must rewind & review, stop the play back a few seconds short of the end of the previous shot.
So to recap. Generate bars and tone for the first 30 seconds of the tape then give your self enough preroll on each shot as well as an additional few seconds at the end of each shot.
If you must review a shot/scene in camera, stop the tape before the end of the scene so the camera can pick up the timecode as it moves on.
    Good luck.

  • JVC old camcorder into FCP X

I want to digitize my VHS tapes.  I have 2 questions.  First, will my hardware/software combo be capable of performing the task.  Second, since I am new to FCP, can you give me the first few steps in FCP X?
    Here is my hardware/software setup:
    1. VCR: JVC HR-S7600U SUPER-VHS VCR - output via S-Video and RCA audio cables
    2. CAMCORDER: JVC GR-DVL915U MiniDV Camcorder - output via Dynex Firewire 800 9-to-4 Pin Cable
    3. COMPUTER: Mid-2012 MacBook Pro 15" Non-Retina - Mac OS X 10.7.4, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    4. SOFTWARE: Final Cut Pro X version 10.0
Basically, the signal-path I have in mind looks like this:
VHS+VCR to Camcorder via S-Video and RCA audio cables
Camcorder to Computer via 9-to-4 pin Firewire cable
    Import via FCP X
Please let me know if you forsee any problems with this.  Assuming the signal-path works, I still need advice on how to run FCP X to perform the actual import and convert.
    Thanks!

You need to post this over in the FCP-X forum:

  • Camcorder for FCP

Looking into getting a camcorder for making video of a lesson about 20 min long.Camcorder will be on a tripod. Will be editing in final cut pro on iMac.Budget $500 range.
I am looking for good video, good sound and seamless (easiest and fastest) transfer of video from camcorder to iMac and final cut pro.

They all fit in the apple specs, but from amazon reviews, someone always has had some difficulty in transfer process or something. So if anyone has advice that can tick the all the boxes, it will be much appreciated

I'm with Russ - all AVCHD, all easy with FCPX ...
    meant as an addendum:
    • audio - what Russ allready said: depending on your recording situation,  you'll need a Lav- or shotgun-mic; or a complete external audio-solution, FCPX multi-cam feature makes it drop-dead-easy to synch different video+audio sources.
    • light - you get a softbox/lamp/tripod-combo for less than 50$ .. adds incredible 'bang' for little bucks to your videos Do not rely on 'low light performance' - low light='noisy' pics=cheap look. photography is painting with light ... you get a superb pic with a low-budget cam with lots of light; search at YT for '3 point lighting' tutorials... you get with really cheap equip a professional 'look' - but with lights, not the cam itself...
    • wide-angle - in rooms, a 30mm-lense could be too narrow.. depends on your recording situation, have an eye on that, test it.
    • if your recordings are 'single shots' (=done in one take), consider a used/super cheap/low quality 2nd cam, to get a 2nd perspective for a sort-of b-roll... cut-aways avoid too much 'boredom' ... steal from the pros: if the pic-quality of that 2nd unit is ... cheap, make it b/w, add (!!) noise.
I've seen many 'instructional' videos (e.g. musicians) - 25min, one shot ... < snore, falling asleep > ... add at last a little movie-magic to your videos...

  • Best compatible Pro HD Camcorder for FCP 6?

I am used to the old days of mini-DV format when things where simple LOL! With the introduction of new formats I do not know which way to go?
Can someone help me in the best HD Camcorder for ease of capturing and editing. I will need to give pros and cons to my boss. I know DV tape is still easy to capture and edit but what is the cons of it now a days?
I heard with compressed formats editing can be difficult and still has issues??
Budget wise looking at options in the $2500K up to $4K.
    Thank you

I use HDV in a Sony V1U. I used to edit in HDV natively, but now I capture to ProRes 422 (NOT HQ) any my G5 Quad does it in real time.
Pros: HDV uses DV tape which is inexpensive and great for archiving: capture it, then stuff in in its case, then in a plastic box (I got mine from Tapestockonline.com) for safekeeping.
ProRes edits easily, but if you have multiple streams (like multiclip, composites, etc.), you may run out of disk band width. I use the internal 7200RPM drives, or external FW800 drives and get two to three streams. More than that and you need a RAID (see CalDigit). A trick: put different captures on different devices/busses: one stream on an internal SATA, another external FW800: you are sort of doing a poor mans performance RAID.
Cons: a drop out on tape may mean up to 1/2 second of missing video and audio data. Whoops! I use Sony HDM-63VG (videographer grade: $8/tape) and have never had this issue.
Capturing HDV to ProRes 422 is only "capture now." There is no log an capture, so recovering from a failing disk drive is more complicated... You could capture to native HDV, then convert it in and FCP sequence set for ProRes 422, or using Compressor.
Prores 422 takes about 4x the disk space as HDV (or DV, for that matter).
I will eventually go to solid state capture, and the new JVC's are pointing in the right direction. Long GOP mpeg2 on SDHC will be more reliable than tape, so dropouts should not be a problem. I'd probably still convert to ProRes 422, however. Buying bare drives and a Wiebetech ComboDock is about as cheap as archiving tapes.
    Just some thoughts: no conclusion.
    Eddie O
PS: with the NEW JVC camera, does anyone know if the color space is 4:2:2 or 4:2:0?

  • What CHEAP camcorder for FCP (UK)?

    Hi all,
I work in a college and we have lots of cheap mini DV camcorders which we use with FCP. We find cheap is better cos on our limited budget we cannot afford to replace expensive kit, and also we have so many students doing media we could not afford expensive camcorders for all.
Obviously now mini DV is on the way out we are hoping to gradually go over to flash-memory based camcorders. I am aware that FCP does not handle AVCHD easily, and it seems most (all?) camcorders in the sub-£400 bracket are AVCHD based. Can anyone recommend any camocorders that are not, and that work well with FCP6? If not, what about FCP7?
    Thanks,
    Sean

    seanofford wrote:
...transcoding does not take for ever, and file sizes are only about the same as movs?
    Sean
Transcoding times are directly dependent on the type of the machine, the file size and the end medium. You're using a laptop so it's not gonna leave markings on the tarmac.
ProRes is a very fine format. It is much bigger than AVCHD but we're talking about a master quality professional codec with relatively small size compared to a codec never meant for editing. Try not to confuse the .mov extension, it is a wrapper and can contain from e.g 4k RGB 10 bit uncompressed up to plain ol' .H263-4, and the sort.
If you're going to use an AVCHD camcorder you're going to have to deal with the this process or switch to something like Adobe CS5 which has however yet to prove its robustness. CS4 proved to be very, very, very buggy and unreliable.

  • Canon DV30 no recognized by FCP 6.0.5

    Fellow FCPers,
I just bought our first HD camcorder and FCP won't recognize it.
The first time I tried it, log and capture comes up with no communications. Camera is on PLAY.
I trashed the FCP prefs and tried again. Now I can control the camera in log and capture, but when you try and capture, no go.
The Camera shows up in the firewire active devices list.
Quicktime is 7.6, all HDV drivers look like they are in the right place.
    Any hints?
    John

    In addition to Jerry's suggestion,
Canon cams do not always play nice when other FireWire devices are connected to the computer and share the same FireWire bus.
To test, disconnect all other FW devices and try the camera again.
If you are capturing to an external FireWire drive, you have the following options:
Connect the camera to the second port on the external drive, if there is one. This will sometimes work.
Purchase and install another FireWire card to create a second bus.
Install extra drives in your Mac Pro and capture to those instead. You can have up to 4 drives in the Pro without further modifications.

  • FCP X freezes and must force quit?  I have a FCP installed on a Mac Mini (4 gig memory) and Lion OS.  The import files are large ACVHD files from a Canon G10 camera.  FCPX freezes and requires a force quit.  Is anyone else having these problems?

I am using FCP X on both a MacMini (10.7 with 4 Gig memory) and an iMac (10.6 with 4 gig memory).  The files are ACVHD files imported from a Canon G10 camcorder.  FCP is constantly freezing and requiring a forced quit.    Could it be that FCP X was not tested thoroughly for use on a Mac Mini?

I think it's safe to say that FCPX wasn't tested throroughly for use on anything.
with that out of the way, there are many variables as to what might cause your problems, but I don't think it's the mac mini as long as it meets the specified minimum requirements (especially the graphics card).
You might try creating a camera archive first and then importing from that.
The other issue might be the file format itself; you might need to use Clipwrap first. Maybe someone who has the same camera can chime in.

  • Is there a fix for FCP 7.0.3 to accept Sony HD SP files

I'm unable to import HD SP files (.MTS) from my Sony camcorder into FCP 7.  I've attempted to "re-wrap" the .MTS files into several formats and convert them to MP4 files, however nothing has succeeded in making these files readable in FCP 7.0.3.  FCP simply rejects these clips as unuseable.  Is there a fix or upgrade that will allow .MTS?

  • In widescreen format, my camcorder captures as 4x3 letterbox.  Help!!!!!!!!

I want to make a widescreen video.
My camcorder (Panasonic NV-GS17) is set to cinema mode, on screen this appears as 4x3 letterbox.
I read up on the whole widescreen thing and learn that it is probably something called anamorphic widescreen but when I capture it in FCP, it's quite obviously 4x3 letterbox that's coming out of the camera.
I'm able to take this into the sequence and stretch it to 133% to get the right effect but this is a bit of a hassle.
How can I capture the video from my camcorder, into FCP and have it automatically crop and stretch the video to the correct format.
    Andy
(p.s. I'm very new to final cut pro)

Ok, when I use log and capture, I see a 4x3 letterbox image, that's using Firewire PAL or Firewire PAL basic. To clarify, I see a normal (almost square) shaped image, with a black bar at the top and bottom.
When I switch to Firewire PAL Anamorphic, the same image appears but this time squished and distorted with even thicker bars at the top and bottom.
From this I can tell that the video is actually coming out of the camcorder as 4x3 letterbox, i.e. the camera is taking the normal image and placing a black bar at the top and bottom.
I know that this way I am losing a whole tonne of quality and that anamorphic would be a much better way to go, but my camcorder won't do anamorphic and I'm not going to spend money on a new camcorder or an anamorphic lens adapter just yet.
Now I've worked out that I can edit my entire video in this 4x3 letterbox format and at the end, create a new sequence as anamorphic , drag in the sequence I've created and zoom it to 133%.
This will work fine for me (I don't mind about the lack of quality, it's just a hobby). However, I would of course prefer to be able to capture the video with letterbox removed and converted to full PAL anamorphic this way it would be easier to work mix and match with genuine anamorphic at the same time as footage from this non-anamorphic camera.
It seems odd, surely this problem quite common with low cost camcorders, I would have thought that final cut pro would be prepared for this sort of thing.
