If there is no digital output then you will need something that can digitize the analog video and getting it into your Mac.
This device will do the trick: eyeTV

  • Importing video from old camcorder to mac without using a newer camcorder?

I'm trying to import old home videos from a camcorder (from about 1991) that uses cassettes, onto my Mac. I tried searching for this here and I found this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1943045&#1943045. But I actually don't have a newer camcorder to rerecord it on. Is there a way to get it on my computer without it?

    Hello Cris,
you actually don't need a new camera to get analog video into your mac, in fact there are not so many cameras that support AV-in.
read the thread you posted in your question again and you'll find an AV/DV converter, a device that "translates" from analog to digital, mentioned there.
these converters are not as costly as good camcorders, but of course they do only this one thing, so if you think about buying a new camcorder in the near future, you could buy one with AV-in .... two devices in one.
oh yeah: the canopus converters mentioned in that thread are supposed to be good.
    hope this helps

  • DVD camcorder to Mac ?

Hoping someone can help. DVD camcorder, want to put film onto mac to edit. No USB or firewire connection only AV. Records onto 8cm discs not compatible with imac G5, any ideas?? The camera is a samsung DC172W. Thanks

I would recommend that you get an inexpensive USB DVD reader/burner that sits flat with a sliding tray. You definitely do not want to put a miniDVD into a vertical iMac drive (unless you have a high tolerance for rattles.)
Once you have it, you need to find a way to convert the contents of your DVD to an editable format. First check your manual to see if you need to finalize the DVD.
Then take your 8cm DVD to your new USB burner and drag the contents into your Mac using the finder.
Most, but not all, DVD camcorders record onto MPEG2, which is not editable in iMovie. So first you have to convert it to an editable format.
There are several tools that will do this conversion. MPEG Streamclip combined with the MPEG2 Playback Component for Quicktime will do it. Visual Hub will do it. Many other options as well.
Convert your MPEG2 to DV or h.264 or AIC. Then it can be edited in iMovie, Final Cut Pro, or Final Cut Express.
If your camcorder does not use MPEG2, post back with what codec it is using and we can suggest other workarounds.

  • Trying to find a compatible Hard Drive camcorder with Mac Mini/ iMovie

I have a Mac Mini with a iLife '06. I am looking to get a new camcorder. I heard the DVDs don't work in the slot. I would love to get an HDD (hard drive) based model if I could (Sony DCR-SR100)as tapes really don't excite me and I have a huge external Hard Drive for my music. Not a big techy, I plan on only using iMovie unless I enjoy it and then upgrade everything. Can I do it or do I need a tape camcorder. Any extra software?
    Thanks!

I'm partial to Sony. I've owned the DCR-TRV22 for several years and have been very pleased. I believe it's been discontinued and replaced by the DCR-HC line.
Here a few threads that offer some more advice and ideas.

  • Connecting Sony Mini-DV camcorder to Mac..

I have a Sony Mini-DV camcorder that I'm trying to connect to my Mac so I can save some video i've taken. The Camcorder is about 5 years old. The only output ports it has are: a really small USB, a slightly larger square looking port that says
i DV under it, and the old yellow audio/video out. I connected the camcorder via a mini usb converter to one of the regular usb ports on the back of my mac and nothing happens. It doesn't even recognize that something has been plugged in... Is there anything I can do to connect this camcorder to my Mac???

    Hi
    A. As Lennart writes but there are in some cases two FW-Cables depending
on how the FW-port looks on Your Mac
    either a
    • 4-pi to 6-pin FireWire Cable - or -
    • 4-pi to FW-800 connector FW-Cable
Some new Macs only have the FW-800 port eg MacBook-Pro
    B. On some Cameras You need to look into the Camera menu and set DV-out
so the Camera port gets active.

  • Import from camcorder to Mac

Hey everyone, I've got a bit of a problem here. Here's what I'm trying to do:
I need to import video from a Sony TRV815 Hi-8 camcorder to one of two computers: The first is an eMac running OSX v10.3.9 and iMovie v4.0.1, and the other a Macbook running OSX v10.5.4 and iMovie HD v6.0.3. The eMac has about 30 free GB of hard drive space, whereas the Macbook only has 7. I'm thinking of editing most of the movie on the eMac, then moving the shorter clips to the Macbook to do the final cut w/ effects and music.
The problem is, the camcorder only has regular RCA/S-Video output. I have an ADS Tech Instant VideoMPX RCA-to-USB converter, but I just found out that it was made for use with Windows and not Mac.
Likewise, I also have a Sony DVDirect VRD-VC10 DVD Drive. This only works on Windows, but it also runs standalone, which would allow me to record from the camcorder to a DVD, then rip from the DVD to my hard drive using Handbrake.
Basically what I'm asking is: Is there any way for me to get the video from the camcorder to the Mac, possibly using a program other than iMovie? Thanks!

I don't see your import problem as the biggest obstacle here. Your lack of sufficient hard drive space makes this impossible. DV, the required format for import, will consume 13GB per hour AND you need at least 25GB of extra free space to prevent crashes and freezing of the programme.
    Resolve this problem first.

  • Connecting camcorder to Mac

I want to copy over the video on my camcorder to my mac.
The manual does not give information on how copy this over to a computer. But it does give info on how to copy it to a VCR.
The instructions say to connect with a with two a cables, a S-video (S-150) and a Stereo Video (STV-250N) for audio.
    I have a iMac G5 running Mac OS X 10.3.9
Here are some of the ports:
    USB
    Firewire
    Line in/optical in
    Projector port?
    My question:
    1. Is there an adapter cable that can connect the S-video & audio cables to the Mac?
    2. Once connect, will the Mac reconginze the input or do I need additional software? Currently all I have is iDVD. I'm not able to spend alot of money.
    Please help.

I just finished importing the film into iMovie.
Man, this is great. I tried this about a year ago and gave up on it because the manual was so funky. There is nothing in it mentioning firewire. And the only thing I knew about firewire was the shape of the port on the back of my mac. The only info it gave on connecting the camcorder to a computer was for to copy the snap shots on the memory card over usb. You guys made short work of my year long problem.
    Thank you.

  • Problems downloading my camcorder to Mac

I have just bought a new mini DV camcorder and am not sure how to download the video onto my mac. It is a Samsung SC-D363.
    Help?
    Thanks

    Hi Bigbatman,
Were you able to transfer video from your Samsung SC-D363 to your Mac using firewire?
I have the same camcorder and it did not come with any driver for the OS-X. Did you get any drivers for the OS-X to use the SC-D363 with a Mac?
Furthermore, I was wondering if you were able to transfer video to your Mac based on Sue’s suggestion.
    Thanks

  • What's the best camcorder for mac and quicktime or youtube?

    Aloha all,
Instead of iSight,,,, what is the best camcorder compatible for mac and transfering video to powerbook G4 and PPC G5 Quad and for use with youtube and or CitizenTube.... ?
I have a Canon SD 500 this should be enough because only can down load a max of 10mb to youtube. But I cannot use as a webcam to pass straight to computer which is fine,. Any Suggestions???
    Mahalo REID

    You're welcome, Reid
I was also wondering about microphones.
Which microphone you use is your decision based on what you want to do and the level of quality you need. As explained in this kBase document, you have a wide range of choices of connections:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=165044
I use this Logitech USB Desktop Microphone for my iMovie voice-over, GarageBand podcasting, and other general purpose voice work. It works well for that, but it is obviously not a professional music quality mic.
if the mic ... hooks up to the digital ... or the analog audio input?
The simplest way to connect a mic to your G5 is via USB. That simplicity, adequate sound quality, and low price are the main reasons I chose my Logitech.
If you need a higher quality (and price) mic for more critical applications, this site offers more information about GarageBand, including this page about microphones.
... are there digital optical microphones for the digital in on the G5?
If there are, I would suggest you stay with analog microphones. I may be wrong, but from this Google search for digital microphones, it seems to me that digital microphones are largely subjects of engineering studies at this time. You might find a microphone pre-amp that takes analog microphone inputs but provides a digital output signal you could connect to your Mac's digital input if you really want or need to use your digital in port.

  • Sony video8 camcorder to mac?

Does anyone know how I can convert video 8 tapes from my Sony camcorder model CCD-TR501E to files on my mac?  I have a firewire cable but there is nowhere to plug that into the camcorder.  The camcorder only has outlets for Audio out (white), Video out (yellow) and RFU DC OUT.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Video 8 is analog not digital, hence without Firewire you cannot connect it directly to your Mac and upload.  You will need to convert it to a digital format.
This tends to be a bit of a black art!!!
There aren't many converter devices around these days - this is one of the few I could locate that works with Mac:

  • Sony hard drive camcorder and mac pro

i have a sony hard drive style camcorder that uses a usb to download to a computer.will the mac pro support this if i use windows on it or is the usb still going to be a hang up?no editing needed, just want to get the movies on my mac instead of a pc.are there any programs that will let me use the usb port?

.would i be able to make it work if i install the program that came with it on the windows side of the mac pro?
you mean, you have bootcamp/parallels/etc on your Mac and want to use a Windows app to handle your camera?.. well, no hands on with Windows nor Bootcamp here...
Windows is a system of many (too many for me... ) options...- which usually needs 'drivers' for any connection to the real world outside the computer.. I mostly doubt, that the usb2 port is supported by a video-edit-app in a Windows app... as mentioned above, the 'computer' has to recognize your device as a harddrive, incl. all the 'protocols' which are needed to 'speak with each other'.. (= all that is implemented in firewire... usb = no standards for that = 'individual drivers'...)
but, why no givin' it a try...?
next problem: you're using Windows to import from your device.. and then? Windows asks for a fat32 formatted drive.. which iM doesn't support ...
besides, there's a 3rd party app for Mac, which supports mpeg2 editing:

You generally only need the 6-pin to 4-pin FireWire cable.

  • MiniDV or HDD Camcorder for Mac video editing

I'll keep it brief. What type of camcorder should I purchase for video editing on a mac?... MiniDV... HDD?
    Why?
    Thanks

That post had been up for the best part of a year and suddenly on February 15th. I received this email:-
"Your post "WARNING - DO NOT BUY A DVD OR HDD CAMCORDER IF YOU WANT TO EDIT !" was removed from Apple Discussions as it contained feedback or feature requests. These areas are intended to address technical issues about Apple products. Although your feedback is appreciated, unfortunately these forums are not designed for it and your thoughts/concerns will not get the attention they deserve."
I don't know what sort of idiot working for Apple was responsible. It contained neither feedback nor requests for features. It was simply there to help people make the best of their Apple equipment.
Don't they realise that these forums help to deflect the flak off Apple, because we all provide disgruntled users with solutions free of charge. If Apple had to deal with all the problems it would cost them a fortune in both money and customer satisfaction.

I want to buy a hard drive based camcorder (sony, jvc) and need to know if any of these are compatible?

You could get a spiffy little HDV camera to go with that expensive mac and FCP 5.1. Since i imagine you wont be doin much more than making dvds HDV would look great and be perfect for you.

    (1) All Firewire drivers you need are in your Mac OS X (10.6.6). Do not add any other driver software.
    (2) Consider all relevant info from this Apple article:
    &emsp: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/9.0/en/mov39f85198.html
    (3) Check your camcorder's manual to be sure of its requirements and settings. Some need to be set to "VCR", connected to wall power, or some other special thing in order to work with a computer.
    (4) When properly connected and configured, if iMovie still does not recognize your camcorder, check a couple different applications that can use a camera to see if the camcorder is recognized there:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13133345&#13133345
    (5) If your cable, adapter, and camcorder can successfully connecting to another Mac, your problem is with your Mac. Ask an Apple Service Provider to check it.
    (6) Otherwise, if you believe that your camcorder should work with iMovie, all or part of your new 800-400 firewire adapter and cable may be faulty. Try another Firewire cable that can connect to your camcorder. If you cannot find a cable that is compatible with your camcorder at one end and your FW800 iMac at the other, use a cable with a FW400 end and add a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these:
