Camcorder Volume

Is there a way to increase the audio volume when taking video.  We had a quiet room, chose scene "Subject" but you can barely hear the video on playback.  I don't see a setting to increase the audio volume for the microphone ...  I asked at my local store and they didn't know how to increase the audio volume pick-up either ...

Well you might want to make sure tha you didnt disable the carmera mic facing the shot, when you are in camera mode slide the on screen menu out from the right side of screem and make sure the scene option is set to everyday or subject if you just want the voices recorded from the  camera side that you are shooting, also I noticed that the software added a number of extra volume slides for curtian individual apps. Try going into the Settings/Sound/Volume menus and make surre all slider are turned up and make sure its not just the playback is low.
I have shot a number of test videos and the audio came through very well on my device, I think it may just be a slider set wrong.
Hope this helps, Good Luck.

  • Video Files Recorded on SD Card Used in Canon AVCHD Camcorder Not Visible Under Mountain Lion

    Hello:
Mountain Lion seems to treat the storage media (an SD card) used to record video in my Canon AVCHD camcorder differently than Mac OS X 10.7, 10.6 and 10.5.
When the card is inserted into the built in-card reader, it mounts as one would expect; however, a folder named "Private" appears and nothing seeems to be inside of it. If I use a machine running 10.7, 10.6, or 10.5, I'm able to drill down the fodler structure to the MTS files.
Anyone know of a way to tell 10.8 to see the data structure as 10.7 would?
I'm guessing that 10.8 wants me to use iMovie or Final Cut Pro X to access the video; however, the files need to remain as they are (i.e. mts files) and used in Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects.
This one is kind of obscure, I know.
    Thank you for any input.

    Let's see...
Sounds like you're running into an expected issue if you make an alias to removeable media.  The same thing would happen if you made the alias to a folder on a DVD-R disc or CD-R.  If you eject the original, you disable the alias.
If you copy the entire SD card volume to your drive, the PRIVATE package should copy across.  Then, as a folder on your hard drive rather than a volume on removeable media, you could make an alias to the STREAM package for quicker access later.
I'm pretty sure that Handbrake, like Prmeiere Pro, can see the MTS files directly.  That is, it's not dependant on the other folders in the PRIVATE directory sturcture.  As such, you could copy the contents of the STREAM package to another folder on your drive.  Just be mindful of the default MTS file names if you're using more than one SD card (you don't want to accidentally copy 00001.MTS from one card over 00001.MTS from another card).
As long as Handbrake sees MTS directly, you could even rename the MTS files after you've copied them.
On a side note, I almost always archive my SD cards with the data structure intact.  More often than not, that file structure is important to corretly access the video stored within that structure.  If something unexpected happens while working with the MTS files, it is good to have the original file structure to go back to.  Although, SD cards are getting to be so low cost that sometimes I just label the SD card and store it for archiving.

  • Capturing dv from camcorder on powerbook internal drive then moving to exte

I plan on installing FCE HD in an OS 10.4.6 Sandbox partition on my 667MHz Powerbook G4 Ti DVI w/ a 60 GB 7200 rpm HD w/ a 13GB Scratch partition.
Since the PB has a single Firewire port, can I capture video from my camera through that FW port to the internal drive Scratch partition and then transfer that file (or files: I have a bunch of footage) to an external FW drive for further work, again using the single FW port for the initial transfer and then editing, etc.? Can I use USB 2.0 for the transfers after capture?
Any special considerations in doing this? Things I haven’t thought of? :–)
Powerbook G4 Ti DVI 667 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   60 GB 7200 rpm internal HD, 1 GB ram, Dell 24" monitor

A Sandbox partition is one generated by SuperDuper! to allow an independent, second OS on a drive. Mine has been working fine and allows me to run new software, including OS updates without affecting the Main partition with it's 'master' set of 'original' applications (the Sandbox uses aliases of the apps on Main). If the new OS or app works, then it can be installed on the Main partition with less danger of unexpected problems. By running from the Sandbox, corruption of the Main partition is less likely.
Why is a scratch partition on the internal drive 'not really a good plan'? Is your caveat for real time capture only, as here or with audio capture, where the disk may be given other, higher priority, tasks by the OS, dropping frames? Hadn't thought of that. The Scratch volume appears to work fine for Photoshop, etc. And I would think it would for post-capture editing in FCE.
'You can daisy chain the camera through the FW drive to the computer. This works with most cameras'. Perhaps I am crying before I am bitten. I have seen posts elsewhere (places I can't recover now!) that recommend using 2 separate FW busses (i.e., adding a FW cardbus to my PB) for the camcorder and the capturing disk, saying that chaining the 2 is likely to cause dropped frames. (My camcorder is an original Optura so it may not play anyway. But that is something else again.)
'USB is not supported by Apple for use with video applications'. Does this include USB 2.0? And I have not seen eSATA mentioned anywhere. ???

  • Camcorder/iMac communication

I posted this question on the iMovie forum a few days ago with no responses so I thought I would give this forum a try. I own a Sony camcorder Model DCR-DVD203 which I purchased in August of 2005. I have never attempted to connect it to my iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo processor) which I purchased earlier this year. The manual for the camcorder indicates that the software which was included on a disc "does not support MacIntosh computer" – it was strictly for PCs. However, a friend indicated that he thought that I should be able to use iMovie which is installed on my iMac with my camcorder since it records on mini (8 cm) DVD discs which are obviously digital. I know that I cannot place the mini discs in the optical drive of the computer (unless I want to experience a massive repair bill) so my only option is to connect the camcorder to the computer using an appropriate cable but I have no idea what type to obtain for this purpose, that is what type of plug has to be on the computer end. I assume that it must be either a firewire or USB plug. The camcorder side requires what the manual refers to as a 10 pin plug. The only cable provided with the camcorder is an AV with two RCA (phono) type audio and one RCA type video plug on one end and what I assume is the 10 pin plug for the camcorder at the other end. I have been using this cable to connect and record onto my DVD recorder however I did wish to explore the use of iMovie (my version is iMovie HD 6.0.3 of which I have absolutely no knowledge) since I thought it might be more useful for editing both the audio and video of my recordings. Will my iMac accept data from this camcorder using some type of appropriate cable so that I can use iMovie? If so, what type of cable do I need to purchase – what type of plug is required on the computer end (obviously I require a 10 pin plug on the camcorder end)? Will I need additional software for the iMovie to recognize the data from the camcorder? From past experience, I get the feeling that the format of the video on the DVD mini disc and the format required for iMovie will likely be incompatible so I don’t want to spend time and money searching for a cable if the information cannot be transferred between the camcorder and iMac in a common format. Sony support has not been very helpful with the information they have provided.

You cannot capture video from this camcorder into iMovie HD as you could with a MiniDV camcorder. iMovie 08 does support some DVD camcorders, but not your model.
Your options to transfer video are:
    - Finalise the DVD in the camcorder and put it into a external DVD player that supports 8 cm discs (alternatively use a different computer to copy the DVD to a regular DVD).
    - Figure out if the camcorder can mount as a mass storage device under OS X (connect using a regular USB cable and refer to your manual how to set up the camcorder for this operation there should be a Transfer or Computer item in the menu somewhere). Once the camcorder mounts as a volume on your desktop, you can drag and drop the contents in the Finder
    - If you have a TV receiver or a video encoder box, you can use the cable supplied by Sony to capture the video through the composite connection - this will come with some quality loss though
Once you have done that, you can still not use the footage without converting it to an editable format. You can e.g. use the free MPEG Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com/) to convert the .vob files from the camcorder to  export the footage to a compatible format (e.g. export to MPEG-4 or demux to .M2V and .AIFF - the latter will cause less quality loss, but you will then deal with separate audio and video tracks).

  • Panasonic HDC-Z10000 Professional 3D Camcorder and AVCHD3D

I bought Panasonic HDC-Z10000 Professional 3D Camcorder. Format of shooting of AVCHD3D. Video from the camera is imported to the 2D. How to import the 3D?

I just bought two Canon HG10 AVCHD camcorder. I'll be using them for a few Smashing Pumpkins concerts in Philly in the next several days.
Here's what I found out so far just playing with them for 20 minutes.
AVCHD + iMove '08 or Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 /= PowerPC
It's not going to work on a PowerPC Mac.
    Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 says:
    Warning:
AVCHD media is unsupported on PowerPC based hardware.
    iMovie '08 says:
    AVCHD Device not supported
An Intel-based Macintosh is required to capture AVCHD video; try changing your camcorder settings to standard definition.
I didn't buy this camcorder for standard def. I did not bother trying that option.
It worked on my Intel MacBook Pro with Final Cut Pro 6.0.1. I don't have iMovie installed on there so I didn't try it.
I recorded a clip about a minute long, 01:01:13 to be exact. I put
the camcorder in USB mode and it mounts on my PowerPC and Intel Mac's
    without installing any software.
Going through the file structure I find
    /Volumes/CANON_HDD/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.MTS
    MTS = MPEG Transport Stream
    That file is 119.6 mb.
I can get the .MTS to play in VLC Media Player but it crashes after a few seconds.
Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 has no idea what to do with .MTS files. When dragging to the bin I get File error: unknown type. You have to go to File > Log And Transfer. Not File > Log And Capture like you
normally would to capture a tape.
From there it transcodes the .MTS file using the Apple ProRes 422 codec. This takes time and makes your nice little 119.6mb file about EIGHT times as big. The file is 929.3 mb! One gigabyte for one minute! It's 24p and 1080 x 1920 though.

  • Audio dub volume

I've grappled with this problem since PP2.
I am making a simple movie of a recent holiday trip and want to add an audio track to my timeline (to correct the wrong things I say in real time.)
I am using a Presonus Firebox firewire mixer and record to just below clipping.
The audio waveform on the newly recorded track looks about the same amplitude as the one on the captured track, but the volume on playback is too low.
I've used the audio mixer to boost the new audio track but I can't get a good result.
    Can anyone help?  Thanks.

I record onto the timeline at the maximum gain before clipping and get what seems to be a healthy audio track.
But when I play the project, the recorded audio track is much lower volume than the audio track in the clip captured from the camcorder.
I can increase the volume in the Audio Mixer, but it just doesn't have the same quality - even when I put on appropriate reverb, etc.
It seems to have no headroom.
I've been thinking I should try recording in Audition and importing, but thats a long way around for a simple voice-over.
The bottom line is I cannot do good voice-overs in CS5.5    It seems easy in some of the consumer editors such as Powerdirector.
Is the problem that I am recording onto the timeline rather than recording a clip and dragging it onto the timeline?
I'd appreciate any help on how to do good and easy voice-overs.  Thanks.

  • Help! How can I import camcorder video to imovie on my computer?

I have a G4 tower, running Leopard 10.5.8. I have a Sony Camcorder Handycam HDD Hybrid DCR-SR45. When I plug in the camcorder to computer the imovie does not launch to import. The computer does recognize that I plugged in my camcorder (icon shows up on my desktop), and when I open that file, and click on a file in the folder of video footage taken today, a window pops up that reads "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file". How can I import today's video footage into imovie? Help! Homework project due Tuesday.

I tried, but when I hit import there is no option that says "import from camera". The driver that shows up on my desktop when I plug in the camcorder reads "no name". When I try to drag the video files into an open window of imovie an error message pops up reading "Error during import", "The file could not be imported;the file ""/volumes/Noname/MP_root/101PNVo1/MZU00001.MPG" Can't be imported. Quicktime could not parse it:-2048
What else can I try? Thx.

  • My mac doesn't recognize my new Canon Vixia HF R600 camcorder, any ideas why?

I just purchased a Canon Vixia HF R600 camcorder.  I'm trying to transfer the video files (recorded in MP4 format) to my iMac (OS X Lion 10.7.5) with the USB cable that came with my camera.  After connecting and powering on my camera, I see the words "USB connection" on my camcorder screen, but absolutely nothing on my iMac.  With my old camcorder, it would show up as an external device on my desktop/in finder and I could transfer files to my mac and then view them either with Quicktime or import into iMovie.  But my computer doesn't seem to know that anything new is connected.  Can anyone help me?  Thanks

Actually iMovie 10 requires Mac OS 10.9 or 10.10.   if you update the OS you can download iMovie 10 for free and iMovie 9 will still be available to use.  iMovie 10 is a big change from iMovie 9 and some capabilities have been removed.
I am nevertheless a little surprised that when you connect your camera via USB that it does not appear as an external drive on your Mac (check in the Finder for a volume probably called "Untitled").  I assume you have read the info that came with your camera that might well include how to connect to a Mac.
    Geoff.

  • Sony CX-160 camcorder compatible in Log and Transfer in FCP X?

Looking at Apple FCP X compatibility list and it is not on there.  I know this list is not anywhere accurate.  Camera is AVCHD .mts file format.
Anyone have this camcorder to confirm this first hand either way?
Thanks in advance. Do not have the FCP X yet.  Just seeing what I am getting myself into.

+Have you updated to the latest version of FCP?+
No, I'm currently running 6.0 with QT 7.2 on OS 10.4.10. In searching the tech forums I'm finding a lot of people having problems with P2 and FCP 6.0.2 and QT 7.3 (which requires OS 10.4.11) so I've steered clear.
    +How have you copied the p2 volumes?+
Yes. The P2 volumes have been copied to hard drives. I'm not anywhere near the P2 cards at this point.
    +Where are they located?+
    LaCie 500 drives
+Did you write protect to the p2 card before copying?+
You mean on the original P2 cards? I don't know, but the files have already successfully been copied to the current hard drives. I can convert them to QT's using Log and Transfer without any trouble. What I can't do is see them in the Log and Transfer viewer before I import. I'd like to be able to do that so I can break them down into more manageable QT files on transfer.

  • Importing Video from Sony Camcorder

    Hi everyone!
I ve got: the right camcorder (Sony DCR-PC2E), the right cable (IEEE 1394) and the PB G4 with IMovie 4. How can I import the data?
Everything ist plugged on, the camera runs in the playermodus but the PB isnt able to detect it.
    my questions are:
1- is the camera supposed to mount as a extra volume on the desktop (it does not)
2- do i need a special recording program (witch one?)
3- does it only work with IMovie HD ( I have'nt)
4- are there different types of this cables? ( I am not quite sure if it fits well, it fits so loose)
    thanks for answering!
Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Sony Camcorder CDR-PC2E

Did it say "No Camera Attached" Try this step by step.
    1. Check all the cables connected
    2. Make sure your camcorder is set to DV Out.
    3. Turn on your camcorder and set to VTR.
    4. Turn on your Desktop/Laptop.
    5. Open iMovie application.
    6. Check for any message ("No camera attached").If yes
    7. Eject the cassette tape( don't pull it out the tape) wait 5-10sec.
    8. Close back the tape mechanism and check for any message
(Camera detected or attach) great!! if not i do not know what to tell you. I have the same issues before when i'm using imovie 4.0

  • New-B!  Which camcorder to buy?

Hello all. Totally new to this forum and to video editing. I have a clean slate and am trying to figure out which camcorder to buy this weekend and was hoping for some help. What I'm looking for is good quality video (doesn't have to be great, but solid) that I can easily import to iMovie 08 and then edit with either of my computers and export the finished product to the Web, or burn to DVD using iDVD. I've been doing a lot of reading and it seems that I could have trouble with some cameras using my G5 as it is not Intel powered, so I would like to stay away from those. I'm not needing to do anything professional with this, just something that is good quality, easy to use, compatible with iMovie 08 and iDVD, and is under $1000. I would consider buying an HD Camcorder while understanding that I have to film/export in a non-HD format until I get FC down the road. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks so much

I did have a problem with Canon repair service during the first year when I bought one of their camcorders several years ago. The on-start-off switch started being intermittent after only 4-5 months and got worse from there. Canon wouldn't do the repair, as their guarantee said, and wanted to charge me a high price to do it. I operated using the remote for a long while. The camera finally wouldn't turn on at all and became totally useless.
Needless to say, I haven't purchased another Canon product since that time. Since then, I went to other makes and have spent quite a bit on both still digital cameras and, very recently now, a camcorder by Sony (HDR-HC9). I stay with the miniDV tapes for both quality and convenience purposes, and also found that I had to revert to iMovie HD (vs 6, rather than iMovie 8) in order to properly edit my videos. So far, I really like my results with the HDR-HC9 - and iMovie 6.
Incidentally, I now only purchase fine camera equipment from very well established local dealers who specialize in camera equipment rather than the big box electronic supply house where I purchased the Canon. The largest camera dealer in Atlanta told me that Canon should certainly have done the repair for me and that Canon would have - if I had purchased it from that dealer. They said that they have such a large volume that they easily pressure such camera makers to uphold their guarantees since Canon wants them to continue selling their product.
I went from a very strong preference for Canon to the opposite. The big box electronic supply house simply said it was between me and Canon and that they wouldn't help at all. So, "good price" is not at all necessarily "good deal". Besides, the good sellers will now generally try to meet the best internet prices.
    Good luck.
So time has passed, but these are lessons that, at least, this one person has learned by experience. Hopefully, Canon may have corrected their problems in their service department by this time. But, I don't feel inclined to test them again myself.

  • Sony DVD camcorder to iMovie?

I can't seem to get my Sony camcorder DVD-403 to import into iMovie 08. So I have these really nice family movies that I would like to edit. They are now all on small, finalized DVDs. I have an external DVD drive hooked up to my computer. (Since I can't fit the mini-dvds in the slot drive.) What program should I use to rip that data off the DVD? Do I need a program to convert the data? I am technically challenged though. So what kind of data do I have? What do I need to convert it to for iMovie? Any help would be most appreciated. I'm looking for easy here and am willing to spend a little money on a program that simplifies things.
    Much thanks!

What program should I use to rip that data off the DVD? Do I need a program to convert the data?
No need to literally "rip" the content since your files are not copy protected. All you really need to do is copy the "muxed" MPEG-2 (usually VOB title set) files to your hard drive and then convert them to a format compatible with iMovie '08. I prefer MPEG Streamclip (free) together with the QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) as it allows you to convert your content to any iMovie '08 acceptable compression format (i.e., DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264), as well as, crop/scale and adjust brightness, saturation, contrast, and/or volume as part of the process. iSquint (free) will convert to MPEG-4 or H.264. FFmpegX (donation-ware) and Visual Hub (pay-ware) will also convert the files to multiple iMovie '08 compatible formats.

  • Sony or Cannon HDD Camcorder?

I am in the market for a HDD Camcorder. I've narrowed it down to the Sony HDR-SR11 or the Cannon HF10. Which is more compatible and user friendly with the Mac? I have a 2 month old MacBook Pro, Version 10.5.5. I want an HD camera that I can literally USB plug into the Mac and export videos. Can these ACHVD cameras work this easily for me (the novice)?

From experience, Mac's support of AVCHD is less than optimal. I had a Sony 60GB HD Camcorder that we tried to import and were not able to. Tried iMove 08, 06, Final Cut Xpress 4.0 to no avail. I finally had to create an dmg image and drag the entire AVCHD folder from the Camcorder HD over to it. And then iMovie 08 was able to recognize the mounted volume from which I imported the videos.
My vote is for tape. HDD you have to store the bits somewhere unless you don't mind ditching the bits once post production is done. And of course, you can tarry to long in editing because HDD space is precious. Frankly storage on digital tape is the most versatile. I tape a wedding, throw the tape into a box. Two years later I come back to finish the editing. No worries about losing bits. What's more, it takes longer to import video from HDD AVCHD than from miniDV HD!! Go figure. Totally backwards. In my humble but accurate opinion, anything but tape is a huge mistake - notwithstanding the shortcomings of the tape such as length. That's about all I can think of.

  • Digital Camcorder & router/Airport USB 2.0 to connect eMac with only USB 1

I've looked around and asked many sources, only to come to the same conclusion that I already thought I knew... no way to go from USB 2.0 through another interface to use firewire on an eMac with only USB 1.1.
I'm curious if anyone has connected a router with a USB 2.0 to an older mac, eMac and/or TiBook in my case via ethernet so that a digital camcorder might appear under the ip-based items available from the router?
there is no reason, other than it being painfully slow over USB 1.1 to think beyond the eMac as it otherwise does every task necessary for my in-laws perfectly. never had a single problem that wasn't caused by their inexperience with a computer, which also makes using a mac so much easier to troubleshoot and fix. they just bought a nice digital hdd (hard disk drive, not hd res) camcorder that communicates via USB 2.0 (as almost all do nowadays).
will any router, or more-specifically an Airport router, be able to communicate with the camcorder via its own USB 2.0 interface and then distribute that data over ethernet to the eMac, or would the router be hamstrung by the same USB 1.1 bottleneck that would affect it if done directly.
I'm also open to other alternatives... I haven't had a chance to play with the camcorder yet, but I imagine that it will somehow mount to the desktop were it able to comm via 2.0. any thoughts?
    cheers,
    - jeremy

    hi duane,
thanks for the quick reply. excellent info.
i noticed that your email said more than the post, did you edit out the last statement, as that was what i was going to comment on...?
my digi camcorder, a tape-based model, does show up like a volume on the desktop, but i wasn't sure of the new hd-based one that my in-laws purchased would. i am able to see the other not just in imovie, so perhps it will mount in the usb port of a router. i don't have an AEBS, but would purchase one specifically for this use if it did work. however i will test it on my us robotics and belkin models that have usb as well. i might also try my NAS drive that has a usb port for daisy-chaining more usb items.
the good thing is that the bottleneck on the emac won't affect the process, it's just a matter of whether the hdd-camcorder can be mounted via one of the other options.
thanks for the other comments, i'll mark as answered once i see how it goes...
    anyone else have any thoughts?

  • No sound when impoting films from camcorder

I'm trying to import and edit films from my camcorder (Digital 8) Sony DCR-TRV740E through the firewire (i-link) connection into iMovie HD 6.0.3. The camcorder is detected and I'm able to import the movie but it has no sound. It used to work but I have no idea what it could be. The boxes on the sound tracks are all checked and the volume is high.
    Does anyone have an idea?
    Thanks!

    Hi
There is one Major origin to this except faulthy FW-Cable.
One can in iMovie (1 to HD6) set Playback via Camera.
Then video is played on screen but also out via FW and to Camera and eventually
to TV if Camera is connected (analog out) to such.
BUT - AUDIO only goes out via FW to Camera and TV - Mac keeps silent.
Result audio is intact - but seems to be lacking.
Medicine. Goto iMovie Menu (top left hand corner - just to the right of Apple sign)
    then down to "Preferences".
Here un-mark - Playback via Camera
    Now it should work.
    Else
    *No Audio*
Most common origin is use of audio from iTunes.
    Work around -
    • Select needed audio to one new playlist
    • Copy out this as an Audio-CD .aiff (not .mp3)
    • Use this in the movieproject
    Other origins are
    1. strange/ailient file formats as -
    • .mp3, .avi, .wmv etc
    • Convert them into .aiff 48kHz 16-bit and use this
    2. the Mac is set wrongly in regard of midi -
    • Close iMovie and other programs
    • Start GarageBand
    • Make a new GB-project and play some notes
    • Close GB and Save
    • Now try iMovie again
    3. No audio when playback in iMovie 1 to HD 6.
    a. in iMovie pref - deselect ”Playback via Camera”
    b. in System preferences - see that Audio out is not set to zero. Mine often does this
    without me knowing why.
    Stuttering audio and video
    1. FileVault is ON - Turn it off
    2. More than 50 audio files in a movie-project
Mix down to one audio clip
    3. Project is stored on one (USB) external hard disk - should be a FireWire one
    4. the External hard disk is not Mac OS Extended formatted - but
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange and this will not work for Video.
    5. To little free space on internal boot hard disk.
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space when project is imported and edited and this goes for
4x3 SD Video. For 16x9 HD my guess would be about 5 times more at least.
Neither Mac OS, iMovie or iDVD can address any other hard disk than the boot drive for it’s
scratch files. (Unlike Final Cut Express/Pro where You select scratch disk/s)
    6. Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
