Camcorders not seen in iMovie HD 6

I have camecorders that were working with iMovie - then I upgraded to iLife 06 with iMovie HD 6. The camecorders worked for a short while and now are not working at all. I have Sony Handycams (DCR-HC20, DCR-HC48 and DCR-TRV320). I have 6 eMacs which are all doing the same thing. I have tried all of the connection tips from the help page and tried different firewires. Does anyone have any advice?
I teach middle school and the students have filmed but can now no longer import.

Actually. I have just noticed that with the panasoinic plugged in it does show up in the system profiler as unknown along with my backup drive and something else. they read like this.

Not sure why that is happening.

• My Canon Camcorder is not seen in iMovie or my iMac!!

Hello,
I recently bought a Canon camcorder MV800i. It has a firewire port to connect with a computer.
I tried connecting it by using a 6-6pin cable and a 6-4pin adapter. I turned the video camera on, in VCR mode. And I get nothing on my computer or my camera that indicates that the camera is hooked to computer. There is nothing else helpful in the camera manual or the iMovie Help.
Also in system profiler, when I click on "Firewire", nothing is mentioned about anything connected. Only the speed of the Firewire.
Any clues??????? The camera is supposedly compatible with Mac and it says it needs no driver and I actually can't find any driver for it on their website.
What's wrong here??

DO"NT Take what I say ouy of context !
The SONY Handyam DV DIGITAL8 are execllent camcorfers and are very good machines. They work seamlessly with my eMac- truly just PLUG IN AND PLAY. This what Firewire and Mac is ALL ABOUT. My first SONY DIGITAL8 is over 3 years old and has some 200+ campaigns behind it. MY videos were taken at outside athletic carnivals, under ALL Sydney weather conditions- i.e. except snow. So this is why over the last 15 years, I have "worn out" 2 older VHSC cameras and the one DV Handycam.
With my 3 year old Handycam, the constant connecting and disconnecting of the Firewire cable has left the Firewire outlet DUD. SO, what do I do? If I took it to a SONY expert, they would tell me I have had GOOD use of my WELL WORN OUT Hangycam, so go buy me a new one. BUT I was advised that the DV, Firewire ideal is no longer used with ANY new state-of-the art camcorder. WHY ?
I still needed a DV Sony replacement as I have some fifty 8cm tapes I have kept of video takes of OUTSTANDING performances by some of my athletes. So, I purchased some months ago a Handycam Digital8 not-state-of-the-art camcorder for HALF the price I paid for my first DV machine.
OK, where does this leave me, especially three or so years in the future? Stick my head in the sand and stick with the now obsolete DV video format ? LOOK somewhere else-i.e. buy a different brand ? WHY has the DV format been abanded ?
Irrespected of what our Discussion Group so called by them GURUS say, DV with small Camcorders is no longer viable. MODERN camcorders are using 8 cm DVD or Hard Drives as the saving media. MY past experience with both DVD disks AND Hard Drives is not at all reassuring. What happens when a Hard Drive in a camcorder gives up? Under NORMAL heavy handed conditions encounted in camcorder use? Hard Drives - the present generation ones- will PACK UP "pretty soon now". Are the camcorder makers working on a replacable HD disk model ? This would be similar to the now outdated ZIP concept but with an HUGE upgrade in capacity- my past bad exoeriences with ZIP drives and their media suggests not.
So, this leaves, NOW at least, the DVD camcorder ! They are very well priced and a lot less bulky than my old Sony DV Handycam/ They have the potental of giving me a GREAT increase in RESOLUTION and picture quality,
I went and bought a Sony DVD Handycam Model DVD703E with HD capacity. EVERY NEW concept has it's limitations !
After USING the camera for the last 9 months, iis "faults" are-
---The DVD RW media is not really suitable for the conditions encounted in the REAL world. In favour is that the camcorder TELLS me this and I can QUICKLY and EASILY replace the 8 cm DVD disk "on-the-run". Afier some 50 "takes", I have yet to be left wih an unusable Handycam. Batteries ? Well that is another story !
--- The mpeg2 codex used by Sony is not up to movie picture DVD quality- SONY is working on this as well as numerous other software "experts'.
The PROS are-
+ Ignoring the artifacts given with compression used in mpeg2, the pictures taken with my DVD Handycan are just as good as my NEW DV X20 Handycam.
+With the active 1M CCD, I can take EXCELLENT STILL phoios which can be enlarged to A4 size.
+ The Handycam is very light and easy to use.
+ Although lacking Firewire, I CAN export both VIDEOS and STILLS directly through USB 1- you don't need USB2, something my old eMac lacks.
+ you can easily convert mpeg2 files into QT files for export into iMovie, the quality of the QT file depending only on the codec used. UNFORTUNEATELY, high quality comes with very long encoding times- up to 12 hours for a 30 minute DVD.
So, the MYTH that you can't use iMovie for DVD files is that-a urban MYTH , unfortuneately created by some chronic posters to this Discussion Group.
MOST of these chronic misinformed posters don't OWN OR USE a videocam, let alone use any version of iMovie.
Sorry, this post is so LONG, but so is my REAL experience in the world of amateur video taking.
PS I will persist uniil some sense gets into the so called GURUS in this Forum.

• Sony Handycam DCR-HC26 not recognized by iMovie'08

System: iMac PPC G5, 2GB DDR SRAM, running 10.5.8
iMovie: '80 7.1.4 (585)
Camera: Sony Handycam DCR-HC2, plugged in (battery in too), in Play/Edit mode (not record mode)
Firewire: 4-6pin, tried 2 cables.
Alert message: "No camera connected. To import video please connect a camera."
Camera on/Firewire in before starting iMovie; also tried restarting with Firewire already attached, no joy.
I DID successfully import video from this camera to another mac about two years ago -- it wouldn't recognize it at first, but I bought a new cable and that took care of it. This time I used the "old" (new last time; gold connections) AND bought a new one. Nothing doing.
Anyone have any help to offer? If I have the time I'll try to dust off the (home) machine that I used a few years ago (not sure which iMovie that was) and see if that works...
Thanks in advance!

Hej Sixten
May be You find help here.
*NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
Cable
• Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
• Test another FW-Cable *very often the problem maker*.
Camera
• Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
• Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
• Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
• Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
• Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
A/D-box
• Is the dip-switches set right ?
• Set to same standard as recorded/editing eg NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
• Try resetting it
Connections
• Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
• FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
Mac
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
(Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
• Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
• White MacBooks - don't
• MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
• Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
• Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
• If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.

• Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
• Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
• FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
• Screen Saver - OFF
• Energy Saver - OFF
Using WHAT versions ? .
• Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
• QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
• iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
• iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
• Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
• If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
//support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odwenGB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

• SONY HDR XR150 - Camcorder is not recognized by iMOVIE

Dear all:
_I own the Sony HDR XR150 camcorder and cannot get my MAC to recognize that my camcorder is connected._
I have a Mac laptop Powerbook G4 and am running OS X version 10.4.11. I have iMOVIE 6.03 (267.2).
When I am in iMOVIE the camcorder is not recognized. :[
It states "No camcorder attached" even when I have small Firewire cable running from camcorder to larger firewire cable plugged into MAC. My footage on camcorder is on hard drive. I have no idea if the footage was taped in a certain format and I mention this because there are lots of formats written about in this forum - I just assumed everything was recorderd in HD. I simply hit record on camcorder to tape footage. When connected, I click on a button on camcorder for USB connect that uses the Internal Hard Drive (where my footage is). However, my camcorder is not recognized on iMOVIE.
I am worried that the problem is I do not have an Intel based Mac. The software that came with Sony camcorder called PMB (Picture Motion Browser - only works with Windows.)
This is what I dug up online.
Tapeless Camcorder Support
iMovie '09 works with many tapeless camcorders that record to flash memory, a hard disk drive (HDD), or DVD media. These devices use a USB 2.0 cable and include camcorders using MPEG-2 (standard definition), MPEG-4, AVCHD, and H.264 formats. If you use the AVCHD format you will need a Mac with an Intel-based Core Duo processor or better.
Due to the wide range of media types, and the different ways manufacturers store video on these media types, not all tapeless camcorders are compatible with iMovie '09.

*CAN ANYONE CLUE ME IN AS TO HOW TO GET MY SONY CAMCORDER TO BE RECOGNIZED IN IMOVIE?*

My friend just wrote this to me as a possible solution...
It doesn't surprise me that AVCHD is only supported on Intel machines. Apple tends to stop updating older products/software in favor of their newer lines. To their credit, high compression HD codecs are processor intensive, and older hardware would have a hard time with it.
The camera may have some alternate options for video file type... Check the manual or help docs. Unfortunately, that could mean SD recording rather than HD.
I DON'T KNOW IF MY FRIEND'S INFORMATION MIGHT HELP SOMEONE GIVE ME SOME EVEN BETTER IDEAS AS A SUGGESTION. AVCHD is a high-def video format that allows HD camcorders and some digital cameras to record video at resolutions up to 1920 x 1080. SOUNDS LIKE MY FRIEND IS SAYING IF I DON'T RECORD IN HD ON MY SONY CAMCORDER MAYBE MY IMOVIE WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH IT. BUT MY IMOVIE DOES NOT EVEN RECOGNIZE MY CAMCORDER... SO I DON;T THINK HIS SUGGESTION WILL WORK...
SUGGESTIONS?

• IPhoto 6 library not seen by other iApps and 3rd party applications

EVery since upgrading to iLife 6 my iPhoto library is not seen by iWeb, iMovie, ScreenSaver preference panel, PrintShop 2, etc. What I've tried:
1. Rebuilding all four options library
2. Deleting prefs
3. Repair permissions
Any ideas on what else i can try?

Randy:
What do you see when you look for photos in the Media pane of iDVD or iMovie?
In addition to deleting the pref files for the iApps there's another preference file, com.apple.iApps.plist, that you should delete also. Then open the applications in the following order: iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, then iDVD. That may help.

• Full HD camcorders that works with iMovie 11

Is there a list of Full HD camcorders that works with iMovie 11 directly - plug & play (import, edit,...), without need to use any workarounds ...
No compromise as to the quality of video.
I am about to buy a new camcorder and am bit confused reading practical/real life user experience presented on the Internet ...

iMovie will not import 60P video without a lot of tinkering, nor will TV sets play 60P video. So that is a feature that helps sell cameras but is not currently a must have. If you shoot a lot of slow motion, 60P can be very useful.
Make sure the camera you buy will shoot 30P, 25P, 24P or 60i.

• What new Canon Camcorders are compatible with iMovie 11?

Hi
I'm planning to buy a new MacBook Pro with iMovie 11. I am also planning to but a new camcorder so I can start take family movies again. I spoke to a tech at the Apple store who suggested Canon camcorders as a brand. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, since the techniology seems to change so quickly. I have a number of expensive obsolete camcorders. On the iMovie '11 Supported Page, Apple lists the Canon FS300 & FS30 as compatible. On Amazon.com, the FS300 series is the 2010 model. The 2011 model is the FS400 & FS40. However is the FS400 & FS40 are not listed on the supported camera page. Is this because is it new? Or is it there another reason these cameras aren't listed?
http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US
Also, at Apple mentioned MPEG-4 fortmat is the best. Both the FS300 or FS400 are MPEG-2 format. Not being technically savy, does this present a problem?

It is possible Apple Engineering hasn't tested those camcorders yet.
Usually a family of camcorders will be compatible, but Apple will not publish it until they can certify.

• DXG 565V not agreeing with iMovie...

Dunno if this is the right place to post this, but...
I just received a new camcorder for Xmas, and tried connecting it to the computer. It pops up on the desktop and I can access .avf files or something along those letters, and iPhoto opens but doesn't read anything off the no-name camera. iMovie won't work with it at all. The camera claims to tape DV, but connects through a USB cable. The CD won't work with Mac. Is there anywhere I can download a mac driver for it, or should I just try and pull the files off the device in the Finder and try to convert them?
Happy Holidays, by the way.

according to this source, http://www.retrevo.com/s/DXG-DXG-565V-Camcorders-review-manual/id/21395ag224/t/1 -2/ your device is records on flash mem => not compatible with iMovie version 5 (topic on this board...).
maybe, if you purchase iLife08 and you own an Intel Mac, you're lucky to handle those files..

I tried dowloading the USB driver and placing it in the directory, but I got stuck because there is no windows/inf directory. I tried to update the usb driver with the same ms crash.
I'm completely frustrated, please can someone help me.

I was having the same problem the other day. I'm not sure what it was but I think it has something to do with the i tunes and i pod 1.2 update.
What I did was:
1. Uninstall i tunes
2. Restart my computer
3. pluged my ipod in a slow usb line
4. waited until my pc recognized it in there. It took a little while.
5. re installed i tunes from apple.com
6. waited until i tunes recognized my ipod
7. updated my i pod with my library it took a long time because i was in the slow usb plug.
8. re plugged my ipod into a 2.0 usb line
9. i tunes recognized it.
10. I then updated my ipod to the new 1.2 version
11. The problem started happening again
