Came home from class to find several prblems with my Macbook Pro

I want to start off by saying that over the weekend, I noticed that my light on my charger did not work any more, and it seems that the actual charger does not work any more either. It has been plugged in for a while but remains at 95%.
Then today, I come home from classes, and notice my computer is making alot noise. It sounded like the fans were working really hard and every 30 seconds or so it would beep. I tried to shut it off but it quickly froze and eventually just seemed to shut off, although it was still making the noises. I unplugged the computer right away, but the sounds continued. Then I noticed that the headphone jack was shining a bright red light. I tried turning it back on from that point but it would not respond. Only when I removed the battery did it quit making noises.
I put the battery back in and the noises started up again. I again tried to turn it on and the noises stopped and the computer started. It made sort of weird sound right when it turned on, but made the regular sound as Mac OSX was loading. I then noticed that my airport shortcut was not on the upper right. I opened internet connect and the option for "turn airport on" was darkened. I noticed the red light was still coming from the headphone jack, so I decided to check the sound. As I played music on iTunes, not a sound came from the speakers. I tried turning up the volume and I got the little symbol of the circle with a line through it came up (like on a no smoking sign). I plugged in my headphones and it worked, but when I unplugged them and plugged them back in, they did not work at all. There was a strange high pitched noise coming from under my keyboard at this point, so I quickly shut down the computer.
When I turned it back on, I found that my Airport now worked. I still have the red light coming from the headphone jack, and I still can't get any sound, but there is no more high-pitched noises. The light on my charger now seems to work most of the time, but often flashes off and then back on. My battery still says 95%. It will not calculate the time until the battery is full though.
So basically, I think that there must have been some freak accident that happened to my computer. All of these things seem unrelated, but it all happened at the same time. I really do not know much about computers - in fact I am not even sure what OS I have. I know I have Mac OS X, but I'm not sure which version. I got my Macbook Pro right after it came out and have downloaded all updates if that helps.
Any idea as to what happened to my computer? What should I do? I was hoping to be able to email apple customer support or something, but I cannot even find how to do that. My phone support has run out, but I do have the repair service still. This is exactly mid-semester for me and I really can't afford to lose my computer! I'm sorry for the long post, but I wanted to describe everything in detail so that I could get the best responses. Any feedback at all will be appreciated, because as I said, I really do not know much about computers. (In terms of parts, how they run, etc.)
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

I might be able to explain a coupe of the symptoms you mention.
Firstly the 95% battery thing: this is expected. the way it works is that the charger does not keep plugging away when the battery is (effectively) fully charged. When the battery level drops below about 95% (say you it on battery for some time), then the charger will start working and try to take the battery back up to 100% again. However if you are between about 95% and 100%, then the charger will not work - hence the 'stable' display of 95%.
The red light from the headphone socket is the optical digital audio connection. The socket can operate with both the optical and the 'old fashioned' stereo headphone plugs. The light is needed for the optical, and the side connectors for the stereo plug. If your system is working well, then the preferences panel will show the options come and go as you plug in the various types of plugs.
I bought my MBP in May last year (shortly after they were released in Australia). If you bought the same thing as I did, then you should have OS X 10.4.8.
When 'strange' things suddenly start happening, it may well be a hardware problem UNLESS you have applied a software update or installed some software just prior. If neither of these have happened, it may well be prudent to have the unit looked at by you local hardware repair place.
Not really answering your basic questions, but I hope this helps.

  • Can't find Canon i9900 with New Macbook Pro

I just set up my new Pro and installed(or thought I did) the i9900 driver. When I go to the Printer Setup utility and try to add the printer, it doesn't see any Canon drivers. I have done this several times. Any idea what I am doing wrong.
    Thanks!

    Hi Roberta,
If the i9900 doesn't show, then we need to make sure FireWire is enabled and working.
First of all, open System Preferences and then Network. Click the Show menu and select Network Port Configurations. Make sure there is a check for Built-in FireWire.
Also, go to your Mac HD (or whatever it is called)/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/Utilities and open the Canon IJ Printer Utility. Change the menu from USB to FireWire. The i9900 should be listed under the Product heading. Do you see this?
If you do, click on the printer name and select Maintenance. From the new window select Ink Level Information from the menu. After a short wait information about all 8 inks should appear, which confirms the Mac and the i9900 are communicating.
If the above is okay then try adding the driver again. Open Printer Setup Utility, click Add, click Default Browser, click More Printers, select Canon BJ Firewire. A similar window to the Canon IJ Printer Utility window will now show and the i9900 should be listed under the Product heading. Click on the i9900 and select Add. The driver should now be added to the printer list. There is no need to browse for a driver. The utility will select it for you (and it doesn't give you the choice to browse the Canon list).
Don't add the printer by clicking on the "1394 BJ_LUNO" listed in the Default Browser. Doing it this way, you will have to browse to the Canon folder but you won't find the i9900 in the list.
    Regards,
    Paul

    Try:

When it  says place the iPod in recovery mode
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs:

    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.

Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. You can purchase replacement discs from Apple.
Or, you can upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
    B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • I didn't get set up discs with my macbook pro when it came from the US - how do I create them on my Mac Mini?

I uninstalled Intego anti-virus software and it has interfered with some of the essential parts of the operating system - (advice from support team) and I cannot access the internet at all - it appears to be all ok on the networking assistant - all green lights but web pages don't open and mail is not sent or received.
Can I make an operating system disc from my Mac Mini to use in the MacBook Pro?

I did get rid of the antivirus software which is why I am where I am now

Clifton I must disagree with you on the above statement. It is my opinion and experience that you should never connect the camera directly to any computer, Mac Windows Whatever.
It is always best to Remove the memory card from the camera and put it in a card reader, whether an external reader or one built into the computer, to copy images from the card.
Hi Shootist. I would be interested in hearing some reasoning on this. I almost always use a USB cable to connect my camera to the MBP for transferring pictures, and have moved about 30,000 this way over the last 6 years since my photography went digital. Recently, on the rare occassions when I have only a few to transfer and I was too lazy to go for the cable, I have used the card reader; about half those times I have difficulty getting the MBP to recognise the card. I find I have to press the card very hard into the slot for it to be recognised.
My rationale is quite possibly wrong, but I feel that the USB connectors are more robust and hard-wearing than the flimsy connectors on an SD card. Also, I haven't measured it, but I think the data transfer is faster with the cable. (I just came across this test, which reports noticeably faster transfer for cable than built-in card reader, but the computer was a PC)
Chiara, sorry for hijacking your thread.

I need to generate a still shot from from a video I made with my camera. I would like to accomplish this task using a single application. If this is not possible with my MacBook Pro as purchased from Apple, please recommend which applications I can purchase that include this feature. Thanks in advance.

    For FREE do the following:
When you get to othe part of the video you want a still shot from, put the video on pause.
Take a screen shot:  Apple>Shift>4 - which will produce a cross hair so you can manually select which part of the video you want.Check inside either your Applications or Utility folder for an app called Grab.  Will do the above with just a single click.
If you still want to purchase software, suggest that you do a Google & MacUpdate search.  This way, you can find exactly what you want.

I have used it quite a bit for connecting to external drives, etc. with no problems. Have not done a tape ingest as we don't have tape based cameras to work with any more. It appears to emulate a FW800 port perfectly.

If things seem to be going haywire with your phone, it seems that it MAY be a software issue.
Now, that being said, that does not necessarily mean that it is a virus. Software issues do happen sometimes. It is probably just coincidence.
What you need to do is restore the device using iTunes. This will fix any software issues. After you have done this, you can restore from an iCloud backup.
iCloud does not back up the actual software, so no, the "virus" would not have gotten into the backups.
The link below provides steps on restoring your device using iTunes as well as how to restore from an iCloud backup.

Can I buy new Os leopard and install?
Can I buy used or new one from ebay?
It was mac os X 10.4.8.
My macbook pro is late 2006 model.
    Intel core2 2.33 Ghz
    15" display

You can upgrade your OS to Snow Leopard 10.6.x.
You can call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a fee, a replacement set of system discs (if available), can be ordered. However, the discs will be for the original version of OS, that was pre-installed, when the Mac was manufactured.
