Camera advice needed

Hi all
I'm shooting a short film soon and I'm hiring in a camera. I was going to go with the Canon XL1-s, but the hire company have a few HD cameras in now, the Sony HVR-A1E, Sony FX1 and Sony HDV-Z1E. Should I go for a HD over the 'standard' definition camera? I'm using FCP4 HD, G5 dual 1.8 2GB RAM and a 300GB Firewire Hard drive.
I'd appreciate any advice.
Regards
Stephen Bennett

No...stick with DV. First off, HDV requires FCP 5. Secondly, it is debatable whether HDV is HD at all:
#34 - HDV is not HD
Shane's Stock Answer #34:
Many many people buy HDV cameras thinking that they are getting an HD camera. This is not the case, for HDV is not HD. It has the same dimensions of HD, 1440x1080i, but it is HIGHLY compressed MPEG-2, and suffers from bad artifacts when fast action is being filmed.
Is HDV an improvement over miniDV? No. It increases resolution and at the same time, increases compression, so, pixel for pixel you have worse quality, but you do have a lot more pixels. Resolution in itself does not = picture quality. You could blow up VHS to HD resolution, but the quality would be terrible, even though it has a high resolution.
HDV is NOT considered a pro format and is at best a high end home movie camera.

  • Mac video hard drive and camera advice needed

My newspaper has agreed to switch to a Mac and Final Cut Express video editing setup and I need to make some recommendations to them as to what to get, since they are willing to buy two MacBook Pro laptops, a video camera and a couple copies of Final Cut Express. Help needed:
1/ What configuration of a MacBook Pro is suggested? The regular hard drive that comes with the computer and an added SATA hard drive for the Final Cut Express scratch disk and file storage? How big should the drives be?
2/ A Mac and Final Cut Express compatible AVCHD video camera with an external microphone shoe, costing about $1000 to 1,2000. Any model suggestions?
    Thanks,

Goodness, Studio X, what an aggressive response from someone who knows nothing of the background to my request for advice. I am no expert as perhaps you may be, but from that school of mid-size and smaller daily newspapers whose staff has had to teach themselves video with a lot of self-learning, little funding, trial by error and forums such as this.
For what it's worth, I trained under our former multimedia editor for a couple years and have since published perhaps 50 video features and audio slideshows to our paper's website, using a tottering system of Premium Elements 4.0, lousy PCs and inadequate cameras. But we've made do while arguing repeatedly for more investment - which is why I finally just used my personal MacBook Pro and Final Cut Express to file a half-dozen deadline video features recently for the paper from a PGA-tour event in our area.
After them being pleased with the speed and results of that, the beancounters are now willing to make a small investment in a better video set-up, which will be for two MacBook Pros with 500 GB external Firewire drives for video storage and scratch disks, Final Cut and a Canon Vixia HF s21. Now, I have a question for you: Do you always come six guns blazing into forums like this and shoot at people who are just trying to up their game a bit with advice from the otherwise other helpful people here? It is to those folks that I now return my attention and my thanks for their aid.

  • Advice needed on buying iphone as gift

I went to apple store, they do not want to sell iphone to me unless I sign AT&T 2 years plan. I thought AT&T has locked the phone and users must subscribe in order to use it. Why Apple store still not allow me to buy?
Please advice, if I want to buy online iphone for my brother, do I or my brother have obligation to sign out AT&T plan?
One more advice needed, I found the shipment takes weeks, do I have option to arrange for self-collection?
My brother birthday is coming soon, I need above advice urgently.
    Thank you very much

I'm guessing English is not your first language. It's possible that you misunderstood them. Apple Store employees won't refuse to sell you an iPhone and you don't have to sign up for service in the store.
    Well that's not entirely true.
Apple Stores have been instructed not to sell you an iPhone if any of the following is true:
    • You state that you will not be signing up with AT&T.
    • You do not have an ID from a US state, also indicating you will not be activating with AT&T
    • You do not have a credit card
For example, I've seen US Apple Store managers refuse to sell iPhones to European residents because of the AT&T lock-in.

  • Video intensive work on Mac Pro? Advice Needed

    Hi everyone,
I've been originally saving up for a while now for an iMac 24" as it offers the best specification price wise. But now I leaning on the Mac Pro and therefore need some advice.
I know that there are alot of posts on advice - need to buy mac etc. so therfore I would really appreciate if I am afforded some help.
I am mostly going to do ALOT of video encoding (via handbrake) and I am looking for the best configuration available to achieve lowest waiting time.

I think you should go back and look at the other threads with advice, your budget. There is "ideal" and "affordable."
Will it pay for itself in 24 months so you can afford the next revision at that time?
    Start with an 8-Core 3GHz.
Add a Port Multiplier controller and two drive cases, 5 drives each, nearly 400MB/sec RAID.
    Throw in 8GB RAM.
Add in costs for software upgrades, two sets of backups, four internal 500GB drives.
Seagate has 750GB, as does WD. Hitachi has their $450 1000GB monster.
Give yourself time to build, test, and optimize your setup, and expect to change it over time as you learn more.
Can't afford that? then trim the 8-core. But Apple has shown how efficient next generation applications already are for video when it comes to 3GHz 8-core Mac Pro.

  • Does the camera roll need to be backed up?

does the camera roll need to be backed up?

No, it just comes to your personal preference, if you would like to make backup of your photos for the worst case. I personally prefer other cloud storage services (like Dropbox: https://db.tt/cMEgDUFZ, or Flickr) for saving my photos and personal videos, because you cannot easily access single photos from a iCloud backup.

Also had to register my laptop (same) as another computers, so now no music showing as purchased, though I have. Also have hours of uploaded music from my own purchased, legitimate CDs, but won't transfer from ipod...it says it will erase. So very frustrated....thanks mr technician!    PLEASE  ....help, advice needed!

I believe that if you do a clean reinstall from your HD's recovery sector (D) or Recovery disks, the hard drive sector C is wiped clean. Everything goes, apps, data, address books, music, pix, viruses
    Is that what you did?

I am using InDesign CS5. I have a body of text which is ranged left with tabbed indents. My client now wants the copy to be justifed, keeping the tabbed indents. Help and advice needed please!

    Hi
That screen grab helps a lot. There’s a much easier way of doing what you’re doing.
Remove all your tabs and set the text in justified paragraphs.
I’ve typed in dummy text in the example I made below, but after “19.1” put in a space and put your blinking cursor after the space and before the ’N’ of ‘Notices'.
Then hold down the Command key and hit Backspace (on Mac at least - it’s the key between the Inverted commas/ apostrophe key and the return key).
The text will jump into place the way you want it to.
    Hope that helps
    Paul
PS You can set a tab, instead of using a space, in the description I gave above. So, after 19.1 or 19.2 or 19.185 etc etc insert a tab, then hit the Command Backspace after every paragraph number and they'll all line up exactly together. You'll find that editing text within the paragraphs
after you've set it will be LOADS easier this way.
You can put the tab anywhere you want it to be using 'Command-ShiftT' and putting a 'left align' tab just after the number. Just type the Command Backspace after the paragraph number and it'll work

  • Audio Sync , 2 camera shoot: Need Project Advice

    Hi Friends,
Question for you from a newbie who will be shooting my first "major" project tonight:
I'll be shooting a 6 minute video with two mini DV cameras, each at different fixed angles. The subjects are talking heads.
In addition, I will be recording a live audio (speech vocals) track onto a computer, which I later must sync with the camera audio. Ultimately, this audio will replace the camera-captured audio.
Since I will importing the raw video and audio feeds into FCE 3.5, and then cutting it up, I don't want to lose sync between video and the separate (imported) audio track.
Is there a way to sync the video track with the audio track, then "import the audio track into the video track as its new "native" audio (i.e. meld them together into one track, replacing its original audio track)?
Or, is there a better way to approach this project?
    Thanks much for your advice.
    DJ

You're assuming the the two will sync up, which they might. You didn't say how you're making the live recording in FCE, but mostly likely it's going to be in 44.1. You'll need to convert that to 48K.
The best approach, if possible, is to take the sound recording and feed it to the two cameras so they can record it directly as they shoot the picture. If that's not possible and you have to make a separate recording I'd connect up the sound to the camera tracks.
Lay the camera A video and audio in the timeline. Turn on the audio waveforms. Put the separate audio into the timeline underneath. Sync up the audio and video. Delete the camera audio and link the separate audio to the camera A video. Drag that back to the browser and make it a master clip. Repeat the process for camera B.

  • Urgent advice needed for Camera

    Hello all,
I would like to buy for cheap from my uni the Panasonic NV-GS75. The documentation only mentions USB 2, but in the manual it lists IEEE 1394, 4pin as Digital Interface: input/output terminal.
Does this mean that the camera will work with FCP? has anyone else had experience with this camer? It was not on the list of compatible cameras on apple's FCP page.
    Thanks for reading.

    Thanks Jeff,
There was a sticky post saying that ALL panasonic cams work with macs over firewire, so i assume it will work fine in FCP, i hope so!

  • I have constant K8N Neo2 problems advice needed. (long) Update

I need some advice on what my problem might be and if I need to RMA the motherboard or power supply.
I have a new Athlon 64 3500+ processor, MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum BIOS v1.3 motherboard, with 2 512MB DIMMs of Corsair Value Select Memory. I have had and am still having a series of crashes and lock-ups I will list below. FULL SYSTEM SPECS BELOW AT BOTTOM.
I initially installed the motherboard with a SINGLE 120GB hard drive from the old machine and the installed the memory in memory slots 1 & 2 to try dual channel memory mode. I then formatted the C partition and did a clean install of Windows XP Professional with SP2, installed the MSI drivers on the installation CD that came with the motherboard (Nvidia nForce3 Version 5.03 System Drivers, Realtek gigabit ethernet driver, Realtek AC97 audio driver) & the GeForce v66.93 video driver. I then got my first blue screen "MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" crash, I ignored this crash and rebooted. I shortly got a black screen crash which I also ignored.
I then installed a new 200GB hard drive and a old 120GB so I could transfer the data from the old 120GB to the new 200GB drive. The data transfer went fine. As I was preparing to install some applications I then got my second blue screen "MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" crash. Suspecting the Corsair Value Select Memory could not handle dual channel I ran Memtest-86 for 2 passes and got NO errors with the memory in dual channel mode, so I left it.
With my data backed up on the 200GB new drive I removed the new 200GB and the second 120GB hard did another clean install of Windows XP Professional with SP2, this time with Nvidia’s nForce3 Version 5.10 system drivers, the Realtek gigabit ethernet driver and Realtek AC97 audio driver  from the motherboard installation CD & the GeForce v66.93 video driver. I downloaded the latest version of Core Center and installed it and got it working. CPU temperatures were showing a low of around 29C, average of about 44C, and spikes at full loads of about 55-57C. I then ran Ghost to back up the boot partition. I installed all my applications, reinstalled the 200GB and 120 GB hard drives moved some data around with no crashes.
I then installed Rome Total War and played for about 2 hours and had one black screen crash after the reboot played for 4 more hours with no problems so I shut down and went to bed.
In the morning I got up started the computer let it run for awhile the CPU temperatures were in the low 30Cs to low 40Cs I tried to copy some files from the D partition to desktop and the screen freezes I waited about 5 min. with no change and no drive light activity so I hit the reset button. Upon reboot I got a ‘no system disk found” error, I went into the BIOS and checked the drive set-ups and boot priority, everything was correct. I tried for a half hour to get the system to boot with on luck. I used the Ghost to restore the partition image I had made earlier and still no boot. I finally decided to reinstall XP again put in the installation CD and when I got to the screen where you decide where to install Windows I changed my mind quit and bingo the machine boots into the restored Ghost partition???? I started to reinstall my applications got one more blue screen"MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" crash and another screen freeze that I had to reset.
So I decided to start from real scratch I removed the new 200GB and the second 120GB hard drive ran Killdisk on the boot drive, made a new clean 20GB C partition and did another clean install of Windows XP Professional with SP2, this time with Nvidia’s nForce3 Version 5.10 system drivers, the Realtek gigabit ethernet driver and Realtek AC97 audio driver from the motherboard installation CD & the GeForce v66.93 video driver. I installed the latest version of Core Center and installed it and got it working. CPU temps were as before.
I tested the memory with Memtest-86 again 2 passes no errors. Just in case I then moved one of the memory DIMMs to memory slot 3 out of dual channel mode and to a slower speed and ran Memtest-86 for about 20 hours with 21 passes with no memory errors, so I think memory can be ruled out as the problem.
Next I installed my applications I got one screen freeze that I had to reset. I reinstalled the other 200GB and 120GB hard drives. After I got all my applications install and Ghosted the boot partition. I have had one more one screen freeze that I had to reset.
I have a problem I simply cannot figure out. The memory is obliviously fine. While I have seen CPU temperatures spikes as high as 57C the CPU temps as reported by Core Center averages in the high 30Cs or low 40Cs and most of crashes/lock-ups don’t seem to occur during high CPU load/temp. The power supply might be a little light for the system but many of the crashes have occurred with only one hard drive in the system. The fact after one for the lock-ups the system would not boot for awhile and then magically just booted gives me concern there might be a motherboard problem.
Any solution ideas would be appreciated. Should I RMA the power supply, the motherboard, or both.

Great isn't it (although not without the occasional crash)
Would you say it's better but not there yet ? or the same ?
I thought the same as Ibn Quote
Your PS unit is a little weak for that much hardware, but I doubt thats your problem as well
re your PSU, given youv'e got a less hungry Graphic Card, thought it was at worse marginal, have seen worse.
To investigate further it may be worth diconnecting one of your HD, maybe the 200gb for a time.
It's a small thing but it may be slightly better to have both your maxtors together on IDE channel 1, given their identical.
good luck - keeo us posted

  • Advice Needed for Coding FCP Plugin's

This will be my first attempt at coding anything for FCP and I am hoping to get some advice on how to proceed and where I can get technical information.
Project 1: Create a plugin to add a selection to the Canvas/Viewer Overlay windows - just under "Show TimeCode Overlays", or there abouts. The option will allow the visual display of the embedded DV Date/Time stamp on the tape, in the same fashion as Time-code is overlaid. As far as I have been able to find, this plugin does not exist yet, so I thought I would give it a shot.
Project 2: Create a plugin to enhance "DV Start/Stop Detect" to label markers with the embedded DV Date/Time code. i.e. Instead of "Segment 1" the marker would be labeled "20070131 19:15:45", assuming of course, a valid date/time existed, otherwise default back to "Segment xx".
But, I guess my first question would be, would these be "legal" projects to pursue. i.e. Is there an API to modify the functionality of FCP in this manner?
I know the DT is available as CatDV has no problem reading it, so I figure FCP should be able to as well.
    I figure I will need:
    1. Info on how the DT is encoded (hex) in the stream
    2. FCP API info
    3. Editing app to put the code together.
    4. Forums that deal with Mac and FCP coding discussions.
    5. Any other advice ANY ONE would like to give.
I have a BSc in Comp Sci and coded on the Main Frame for 15 years, so I have "basic" coding skills, but I have not coded on the Mac yet. I have registered for the FREE Developer Account, but haven't had a chance to explored the service yet.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
ASIDE: I have been editing in FCP since v1 and I shoot events with multiple cameras, sometimes hiring additional cameramen (with their own gear). Because, the events I shoot are usually live "one-of" events like weddings, sports... etc, there is a lot of ON/OFF recording. As such, I find the best way to sync up tapes is to match up Date/Time codes. I accomplish this by playing back the captured video through Firewire back to a Panasonic PV-GS400 which displays the DT on the pop-out display. I then MANUALLY update the previously created "DV Start/Stop Detect" segments with the appropriate DT.
This is a very time consuming process, and if I can get FCP to display the DT directly, it would knock hours off my work flow.
I hope this all makes sense.
FYI I will also be posting this in the 2-pop forums, so if I get any advice there, I will update my post here.
    TIA
    Gary

    Hi Gary
Regarding both your proposed projects afaik there is no API to directly allow you to do this.
However a few options spring to mind: analyzing midi control /mackie control data as provided to a control surface (check out Digital Heaven's BigTime for an idea of how this could work); similarly you could create a virtual DV output device that would appear in the external video outputs list whereby the output video stream would be passed through your code to extract and display the info; perhaps simplest although the least dynamic would be simply to write an FxPlug filter that could be dropped on the clip ... the user could then populate the filter with static display data by manually scavenging the clip for the info with a "button" in your filter (see the options dialog example in the FxPlug SDK)
    Good luck

  • Advice needed: decent field recording mic...

    Hi
Been trying to record some beautiful natural sounds with a "good for it's price" small mini-disc stereo mic.
unfortunately sounds too tinny and it just is far too sensitive to wind (yes, i've tried simulating a nice wind shield - even used my sock today!...) and makes a beautiful stream sound more akin to me running a bath! It's ok at picking up background ambience with a hiss - but that's about it.
So, the point is can anyone recommend a great field mic (with wind protection) that i can use with my minidisc recorder or my powerbook mobile setup?
I'm happy for a mono mic - though stereo would be cool. Something that will make my recordings sound more "pro" and my price range is about £100-200 ($200-400).
All help and advice is much appreciated!
    Thanks

You will be real lucky even to get a rabbit out of a
hat for that money, of which sounds like a pro,
    <which is'nt tiny.> thats like being hungry for a
meal of fish and instead of spending a bit of cash
thats wordy for a meal, you start steering at your
pet gold fish in a bowl, which is,nt no bigger than
half the size of coin, maybe then again you would
consider also to drink the water from the bowl, then
    eating the bowl, get it!
Hi Blayzay. I always read your posts with interest. I didn't get any of the above. I've read this three times now. I really don't understand what you are trying to say here. I did understand the stuff after this point in the post though.
    And please <whats a
small mini-disc stereo mic.> going to do?
Just to offer a difference of opinion. I have both a mono and stereo mini disk mic (both Sony I think). They work surprisingly well. I wouldn't record and orchestra with them, but for what they are intended for, they are very good. And no schlepping.
and please dont go out and buy a Ipod.
I love ipods. I've been trying to find a way to convince my wife that I need one since they came out. LOL. (hmmm ... "I just need it as a transportable drive" ... that was working until she found out how cheap other drives are now)
(Valves, tubes, condenser, ribbon) all those words in bracket is related to
    types of mic,s soundcard, preamps, interface, mixing-desk/ neve/tascam />berringer/mackie, sound-craft. Processor, c.p.u. fruity-loops, Garage-band, >i would say m-audio , but in your case no, diggidesign, apogee, rme, g2, g5 >mac-pro, dell power-mac then without even aking you'll know the
range or cost of pro, equipment.
All interesting stuff and you know about lots of gear there. But I can't imaging any of that stuff having use in the field. It's heavy. How would you power it. You'd scare all the wild life away. And the crew would laugh you off the set. Except the fruity loops part. Snacks are always good in the field. LOL
Cheers Blayzay. Thanks for the morning smile.

  • ADVICE needed - FCPX projects -- FCP7 workflow (not X27)

    Hey all,
    I need some sage advice.
I have been working on a huge project for over a year now on location in Bosnia.
All footage has been shot on the 5D mrk3 and c300 cameras.
    My FCPX Workflow
While on location I was importing / organizing / syncing / labeling and adding subtitles into FCPX.
    - I have each camera in it's own event and project.
    - I have the video synced (using Plural Eyes) with the Zoom audio files.
    - I have added subtitles from my translator using Annotation edit.
    - I have then used the TimeCode generator to give the entire sync'ed, subbed "master timeline" a consistent reference throughout and so I always know exactly where that clip lives in the "master timeline" once I start editing.
    - Lastly I have added the "file name" using the Text "right" generator in FCPX so I always know what day it is.
I would then create a separate compound clip for all the video from that day, the external audio, and the subtitles. (so that is 3 Compound clips. (see pics below)
Add the TimeCode and right text generators...
Select all and make it all a C. Clip... I did this so nothing would shift.. the Subs would be in sync and the timecode would always be the same no matter how and where the footage was used....
    My Question / Challenge
OK so now my producers have found an editor and this editor needs to edit this project in FCP 7.
I am in Chicago they are in Berlin... I will join them in Berlin but want to do as much prep work in the 1.5 months leading up to my travel date here in Chicago.
They have all the footage and FCPX projects and events and now need to get them into FCP 7
the app X to 7 does not import FCPX generators and has some quirks importing text (I am not sure how it will handle my subs as we are just beginning the import / converting process)
What I don't want is to loose all the good work that I have done on my end to be organized and I absolutely NEED the subtitles included with the sync'd footage.
Does anyone have any advice and / or know where I can turn to figure out what to do in this situation?
the viewer with subs, timecode, and file stamp
    the timeline broken apart
    the timeline as compound clips

    @ Russ H
Yeah I thought of that too...
Just using the flatened verssion as a reference file that can be enabled and disapbled as necessary hoever like you pointed out that is "not ideal" AND would actually be pretty time consuming as I am dealing with
45 Days of footage totalling 200+ hours...
So it actually takes about an hour to render and export each 3-4 hour days of flattened footage.
But that may be the best soltuion of the not so great options I have in front of me...
    @Meg The Dog
Thanks, and yes I will be doing all of that sans the assistant editor.
One of the largest issues is that I am not a FCPX expert so I can't do that...
AND the budget is a bit tight to hire a second editor for this job PLUS it is in Berlin (I am in Chicago)
So while I will be there for the editing process the lead / post time is going to be pretty tight and I need to make sure that all the footage is online, sync'd, subbed and ready to go once I step off the plane.
I agree that in an ideal situation your suggestion would be best if the budget allowed for it...

  • Advice needed regarding iPad 2 software upgrade

    Hi,
I have a 64GB WiFi iPad 2 that is still running the original iOS 4.3.3 with which it came out of the factory as well as a 16GB iPhone 4 running iOS 4.3.5. My question is: Should I upgrade to iOS5? Or rather, is it safe to upgrade to iOS5?
My only iOS upgrade experience is with a 64GB 3rd generation iPod Touch which was ruined by iOS4 and made worse by iOS5. After the upgrade my video app no longer worked and the Touch was very laggy and glitchy. It would seem as if the the 64GB models react differently to iOS upgrades than the smaller capacity models. In the case of the Touch, the processor simply could not handle 59GB of content and a new version of iOS. The upgrade to iOS5 fixed the video app but then corrupted 2GB of the flash memory resulting in only 57GB now being available in stead of the usual 59GB. It is still just as laggy and glitchy as it was with iOS4.
My question is: Does anybody have a 64GB iPad 2 (that originally came out with iOS4) that was upgraded to iOS5, that is filled to capacity with apps, music & video's (music video's & TV shows)? If so, how is iOS 5.1.1 running on it? Is your iPad still as responsive and smooth running as it was with iOS4? I use my iPad extensively for video, and if the video app no longer works the iPad will be useless for me. What did iOS5 do to your battery life? Do you still get the same great battery life as with iOS4?
I would also like to hear from iPhone 4 owners now running iOS5.1.1. Is your iPhone still as smooth and responsive as with iOS4? What did iOS5 do to your battery life?
Any help, advice and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Daniel

I have the same pad as you, and I have kept up with the upgrades, and I have had no problems.  Zippo.
I have a friend who stayed where you are, and he is fine, but does not have the new stuff that is included in the upgrades, also, he cannot update any apps that need the new system, such as pages, keynote, numbers, I photo garage band etc.
If you take your time, the upgrade is relatively painless.  I lost no apps, nor data.  I needed to re enter my mail info one one account, and had to redo the wifi stuff for my home network.
With 5.0, other than the above capabilities, I did not notice any speed improvement nor worsening.  With 5.1. I did notice that the machine is a little quicker.  May be my imagination.
I did have a little battery issue initially, and found a couple of apps that we're trying to connect home and do something, and once I dumped them, the battery life is the same as it was.
So no issues here at all.   I also have a phone 4, and can report the same thing, no issues, and a little snappier under 5.1.
If you are still at 4.xx you are a couple of generations behind.  I don't know what you may have loaded, but it is possible that you have an that does not play well, and you may have issues, but I did not.
Before you update, back everything up.  Photos, music and apps, and send a copy of any important days and spreadsheets to Dropbox or some where.  Then , if it gets messed up, simply set it up as brand new, then restore from that backup.  And if that fails, simply redownload the music, books, and apps from the store for free if you are using the same apple Id.
