Camera Brand Recommendations for Ease with iPhoto

Hi
I'm seeking recommendations for mid-level digital camera brands that have images that are highly compatible with iPhoto.
I'm not a professional photographer.  Just a proud father.
I never felt that my Sony cameras image files were as easy to upload and work with in iPhoto.  I like the look of Samsung cameras, but they state their cameras are designed for being very compatible with Android. So that seems like it will be tedious to use their images in iPhoto.
Anyhow, I'd like to hear good and bad experiences with various camera brands.

Uploading the images from the camera should be the easy part.  When picking a camera to catch the important moments in life of your kids, pick a camera that takes great photos, but has a "point and shoot" feeling. You will want a camera that is ready, when you need it, and not have to look for the manual or changing lenses, when your kid makes the first walking step.
I'd go for a camera with a wide range zoom, auto focus plus manual focus, built-in flash, and menus and controls that are easy to understand and to find.  And I would never buy a camera without a view finder, because the displays are hard to use in bright sunlight in the garden.

  • Monitor Recommendations for Use with Captivate

Anyone have any monitor recommendations for use with Captivate? Size and resolution?

The formal adobe  recommendation is as posted 1024x768 is fine.
But, monitors are not that expensive, so for productivity and better work environment I recommend at least one wide screen 22" with resolution  1600X1200 or more  and that supports 1080 for video.
You need the  wide screen ( or  two monitors) so you can work with all the tools in one view.

  • Is the MacBook Air recommended for working with RAW photographs using Aperture or Lightroom and perhaps Photoshop?

Is the MacBook Air recommended for working with RAW photographs in Aperture and Photoshop, or do I need a more powerful MacBook ?   The relative lack of weight of the AIr is what attracts me to it.

For doing Photography with RAW files in either Aperture or Photoshop, the new MacBook Air is fine, but for Photoshop CS6 some of the filters and plugins really need a better graphics card and plenty of RAM.
You'll also want an external disk if you are going to be doing lots of shooting.
    Summary:
Yes, you can use an air but you'll want external storage and at least 8GB of ram.
Or go MacBook Pro with 16GB ram with the 650M card.

  • Camera is no longer Ok with iPhoto?

I recently upgraded to iPhoto 5, from an older version. I have a Minolta Dimage Z10 camera that I bought specifically knowing that it worked with iPhoto and it did. But now, after updrading, iPhoto says that the camera has no files to import when I connect. Does the new iPhoto no longer work with my camera?

Right. I plug it in via a USB port, turn on the camera, then iPhoto opens. I get a message that says "loading photos" for a second, then it shows my library. It then immediately says that its "loading camera" but htem almost immediately says the there are "no photos to import." I looked, the files are saved as JPG's on the SD card. Ah, tried a different SD card, and it worked.
    Thanks.

  • IPhone camera roll does not sync with iPhoto

Around 1/2 of my pictures in my camera roll folder on my iPhone 5S are missing in iPhoto. For example: I have photos until April 2014 that are sync'ed and then a gap until October 2014. How come iPhoto does not import all my photos as a standard? I cannot be related to dates as there are a mix of old and new.
    Thanks!

Make sure that you are using a apple charger or transferring charger. Then unplug the charger from both things plug it back in. If that does not work then unplug again and restart.iPhone camera roll does not sync with iPhoto

  • What is the best Logitech (or other) camera to buy for use with 10.3.9?

I have heard that both Gearhead and Rocketfish have many issues. I read that Logitech cameras, various ones, work with either 10.2 and under or 10.4.9 and over. The Isight prices on ebay or very high. Calls to both Logitech and Apple leave me disconcerted with there cryptic answers. Officially, it seems that Logitech has no camera that works with 10.3.9 but I have read that it has been done. I don't need all the bells and whistles that a new model Logitech camera provides and I know I won't get those on the MaC, however, I would like a good pictre and Skype compatibility. I know I can get iChatUSB and Macam drivers with some cameras. Can I do all that on 10.3.9? Is there another, different company that makes good cameras I can use with 10.3.9? A call to Creative Labs brought me a "no" when I asked him if any of their cams were 10.3.9 compatible but I question if he was right.
I know there has to be many of you out there with this issue - no Isight, but using Panther with a really good after market camera and really satisfied with the results...what did you do?
Please help me and tell me what my best option is....upgrading seems very expensive as well.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Stovepipeforever
I use iSight, but if you do not get better answers here, I offer the following for your consideration.
If you have a Mac compatible, Firewire connected DV camcorder, it will work for your video chats. If not, take your portable Mac with you when you go shopping, and ask to try any camera of interest with your computer and software before you buy. That way you will KNOW you have one that works for you with the apps you want to use.
Unless your 10.3.9 laptop has a G3 processor whose speed is less than 600 Mhz, it can give you a good picture and Skype compatibility if your system meets the other system requirements for all the apps you plan to use. Any camera's video frame rates will be noticeably slow if your laptop is a sub-600 Mhz G3.
If multi-party video chat or screen sharing are not important to you, there is no need to upgrade to later versions Mac OS X and iChat. The latest version of Skype is compatible with 10.3.9 and later, so there is no Skype impact on your upgrade decision.
You are correct that you will need iChatUSBCam and drivers to send iChat video from your 10.3.9 Laptop. (Your laptop system will also need to meet the other System Requirements for iChat AV 2.1 that are not obviated by using iChatUSBCam.
Although other USB cams may work, you can use iChatUSBCam's camera guide page to find a list of USB cameras that are Known Working Configurations. Any of them should be compatible with Skype, but check the camera's compatibility info before you buy to be sure it claims to work with Skype. If it works with Skype for Windows, it will work with Skype for Mac.

  • Camera Roll on iPhone syncing with iPhoto

I have looked through all the settings. Is there a way to tell the Camera Roll album on the iPhone to sync with iPhoto via iTunes?
It does not show up in iTunes as a playlist and I would love to sync the photos rather than having to email every camera photo I take.

  • Mac Pro RAID block size recommendations for working with audio in Logic Pro

I have recently ordered a Mac Pro and plan to do a RAID configuration across 3 HDD's
The RAID type i am going to do is a RAID 0 striped.
The computer is going to be used primarily for audio post production and working with 20+ 24-Bit audio files at any one time within a Logic project.
I want to know what is the best block size i should use when configuring the RAID.
I understand that using a higher block size is best for working with large files but do i need to do this in my case or will the default 32k block size be enough?
    Thanks in advance

Use 64k. Things like databases like having 32k blocks because of all the small files. Audio files are pretty small even at 24-bit 192KHz. Go to 128k if all you are doing is streaming and no samples. But 20+ 24-bit is really not too large anyway considering most modern HDD's can stream 100MB/s off one spindle. You'll probably be fine regardless of the block size you choose. But most audio pro's choose 64k.

  • What is best type of 'new' video camera to buy for editing with PE 10?

I currently own two Sony miniDV camcorders (models DCR-HC28 and HC40) and was doing fine in Premiere Elements and recently upgraded to version 10. I was in the process of using the HC40 cam as a 'pass-through' device to digitize some old VHS tapes, and it worked well for copying from VHS to miniDV tape. Then, I could capture in Premiere Elements and edit, etc. (It would never work to pass all the way through to capture in PE in one step using Firewire).  Now, the HC40 camera has locked up on me halfway through my box of VHS tapes, and is stuck showing the Time/Date screen and the touch screen seems to be disabled.  What to do?
There do exist plenty of used DCR-HC40 and 52s (which also support pass-through) on Amazon for sale in the $200 range, and that is one option.  I also went to Best Buys this week and looked at all the new Sony video cameras, and they fell into basically two series:  the DCR-SX series, which record in standard definition onto flash memory (SD cards), and the more expensive HDR-CX series, which record in Hi Definition (also on SD cards) but also, I was told, can record in standard definition.  The miniDV camcorders are no more, apparently.  I am not so enamored of HD recording that I would go whole hog for it, as I am happy with the results I have been getting with my miniDV cameras once burned to DVD or converted to MPEG or MP4 for playing on my iPhone, etc. Plus, HD takes up so much more memory and space on the hard drive compared to standard def files.
I called Sony tech services today to find out that none of the new cameras support the pass-through function for digitizing from old VHS cassettes, so I am looking at buying a VHS-digitizing device as recommended here on the forum such as the ADS Pyro AV Link or Grass Valley ADVC110.  Since I would rather spend that money on a new video camera instead of merely the AV link device which I will have no use for once the tapes are digitized, my question comes back to the cameras. Which of the new cameras will be most ideal for editing in PE10 going forward, or is it best to stick with miniDV for now?
Steve G has always seemed to point out that miniDV tape and the ensuing AVI files are the best for PE to work with.  Sony told me today that even the SD cameras such as the DCR-SX65SD ($219) now record onto the SD cards in MPEG2 format, and that AVI is a thing of the past that died with the miniDV tapes.  I assume MPEG2 still comes out as different clips that one assembles on the Timeline in PE10?  One probably could convert the MPEG2 files to AVI, but would that give the same quality as an original AVI file from a miniDV tape? And if MPEG2 is the new standard going forward, do the resulting videos made with PE10 have the same quality as those made from 'native' AVI files?  I will buy a used DCR-HC40 miniDV camera if the end result is better than those to be obtained with the brand new DCR or HDR series cameras now available in stores.  But if the quality is the same, I could perhaps opt for one such as the HDR-CX 130HD ($349) which also records in SD in case some years from now I decide I really DO want to switch to HD formats.
Any advice on choice/use of the newer cameras and their default formats such as MPEG2 is welcome, in relation to PE10 editing and output capabilities.
    Thanks very much,   paultool3

    Dear JM and Steve,
Thanks much for your replies.  I plan to get my DCR-HC40 miniDV camera fixed so I can use it for pass-through digitizing from VHS tapes.  I also recently bought one of the Dazzle Video Creator Platinum capture units ($84 at Best Buys) just to try it, and actually got pretty good results in digitizing a VHS-C tape using a VHS-C to VHS adapter unit to play it in our VCR, and then using the Pinnacle Studio HD (version 15) that came with the Dazzle unit to import and digitize through the Dazzle unit.
The Dazzle unit would not show up in Premiere Elements 10 as an option to capture from, but did in Pinnacle Studio 15.   I used our Sony VAIO with i7 processor and Pinnacle captured the one hour, twenty-five minute- long VHS-C tape to a single 18GB .AVI  clip which I then was able to bring into Premiere Elements 10 and use for output in various formats.
When using a less powerful laptop initially, the digitizing failed, with 319 dropped frames in the first 5 minutes.. So it takes a more powerful computer to work with a capture unit like Dazzle, apparently.
I will eventually be shopping around for a new,  AVCHD format video camera as well based on your recommendations, but the current group of Sonys in this category, such as the HDR-CX130HD ($349) which record video onto SD cards, are getting bad reviews from CNET, claiming they have poor quality HD and other issues.  So for the forseeable future I will be sticking with miniDV using my Sony DCR-HC28 and HC40 camcorders.

  • External Storage recommended for use with FCPX

    Hi everyone,
I want to improve FCPX performance and work with my events and projects on one or two external HDDs.
I am an amateur editor and mostly work with    720p, 120 fps, h.264 optimized to ProRes 422 footage on mostly single camera projects.
Can anyone recommend a portable product that will work for my purposes?  Preferably one that I don't have to spend $1000+ on (like drobo or promise).
Is an external USB3 Drive powerful enough? Do I need thunderbolt?
Thanks so much for your answers and help!
    Mike
    P.s. Working with a MBP 15" Retina, 2,6 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 750GB SSD.

120fps?  What camera did this media come from?
FW800 minimum, Thunderbolt is best.  You're budget will determine your limits.  Will USB 3.0 be enough?  It all depends on what format you're editing.  If you transcode everything to ProRes, just about anything will work. Firewire 800 will work, unless you're doing a lot of compositing and/or very long projects.
Get the format you can afford.  Be sure spinning disk drives (your price range) are 7200rpm!  Vital!
Minimum would be FW800, next up would be USB 3.0, next up would be Thunderbolt, as far as speed.  Avoid SSD drives as you'll not get much storage space for the amount you sound like you have to spend.

  • Camcorder recommendations for use with MBP?

    Hello all,
I could have sworn I posted this earlier but I can't find it.
I'd be very grateful indeed for any recommendations and hints for a MBP compatible Camcorder from those who use one on a semi pro basis with the MBP. I'm a bit unfamiliar with the technology as it's exploded since I last looked. I need one that is PAL compatible with good picture quality and around the $900 range. PAL, then picture quality, then weight are the main factors in that order.
    Many thanks is advance.
    Cheers.

Thank you all very much indeed for taking the time to reply. Very much appreciated and very helpful. I've narrowed down the choices significantly - PAL compatibility seems to be the minor sticking point - difficult to find PAL compatible cameras in the US - I thought it didn't matter any more, but apparently it still does.
    Thanks very much.
    Cheers.
