Camera calibration tab and camera color space

Hi, I need a confirmation about the hue and saturation sliders on the camera calibration tab. They are there for fine tuning the camera color space primaries in a DNG profile? Thanks a lot.

Hello, here I'm again.
I'm probably in the wrong forum, because I can't tell you anything about the DNG secrets
(though I have the specs).
About your second question (more an issue for a color science forum), I've found something:
Estimation of the primaries for a digital camera:
Please refer to these docs:
(1)
Concerning the Calculation of the Color Gamut in a Digital Camera

(2)
http://docs-hoffmann.de/leastsqu16112006.pdf
Given is an equation
(*) X = C R
We have two applications:
(1)  Original question
X = Matrix  X1 X2 ... Xm
                Y1 Y2 ... Ym
                 Z1 Z2 ... Zm
m=41 values in each row for CIE CMFs (color matching functions) 380nm...780nm
R = Matrix  R1 R2 ... Rm
                 G1 G2 ... Gm
                 B1 B2 ... Bm
41 values in each row for the sensor sensitivities for red, green and blue CCD array elements
Matrix C is found by solving equation (*), using the pseudoinverse.
Matrix C contains the XYZ-coordinates of the primaries red, green, blue as columns 1, 2 and 3.
(2) About the mathematics
X = Matrix  X1 X2  ...  Xm
                 Y1 Y2 ... Ym
                 Z1 Z2 ... Zm
m=24 values for the GretagMacbeth ColorChecker
R = Matrix  R1 R2 ... Rm
                  G1 G2 ... Gm
                  B1 B2 ... Bm
24 values in each row for the RGB results als delivered by the camera, for instance in sRGB.
Matrix C contains the XYZ-coordinates of the effective primaries(including sRGB)  red, green, blue as columns.
(2) explains the principle of the pseudoinverse for overdetermined systems of linear equations.
(1) explains the application for the identification of camera primaries for given sensor sensitivities.
Unfortunately, the whole concept will fail, if the camera sensor sensitivities (CMFs) are not
linear combinations of the CIE CMFs x-bar, y-bar, z-bar. In this case, a camera does not have
primaries, but the computational result can be used as an approximation.
CMF = color matching function (CIE)
I regret –it cannot be explained 'for the layman'.

  • Camera Raw Camera Calibration Tab and 5D Mark III

I don't think that many people do this in camera raw, but it was kind of an important step in my workflow with the Canon 7D before and is just not working the same way with the 5D Mark III now.
In the Camera Calibration Tab (Third from the right side) I always changed Camera Profile from Adobe Standard to Camera Standard or Camera Portrait. This step made the image automatically look better, contrast was better and the highlights look a lot better that way. Of course the "Camera Portrait" option makes the image a lil bit red, like the Picture Style in the camera does. But it was an easy adjustment with the Hue Slider of the Red Channel. Like I already said - really great improvement of the image on the 7D raw files, beautiful highlights, shiny, contrasty and so on... Same stuff worked with 5D Mark II perfectly, too.
Now with the 5D Mark III the "Camera Portrait" option, my favourite one, gets me pretty bad results. The Image is too strong oversaturated, too much red in the skintones and in the shadows, too! Shadow contrast gets worse and I can't control this settings the way I did before with the hue/saturation sliders of the channels. It's too extreme red or it's too yellow, but not something right between this extremes. And the highlights get some green tint, so it's no real optimization of the image overall quality at all, like with the other cameras. I don't know if the support of the 5DMIII is still not up to date... It is not only my camera, I also have asked other photographers with a 5D Mark III and they have the same issues changing the camera profile. Lightroom has exactly the same effect... It would be great, if an Adobe Employee can forward this issues, so that it gets tweaked with the further updates and 5dm3 will work the same way in camera raw like mark 2 or 7D.
    Sorry for my bad english

Yes, white balance is another possible reason for mismatch
    These rules apply:
    - if you use white balance "as shot", then white balance in ACR will be the same as from camera or DPP (in a sense - what is white color in ACR will be white in DPP also). However, color temperature/tint shown in ACR will be probably slightly different than value recorded in exif of jpeg or raw file. It's because in that case, whitebalancing is performed using some metadata in raw file by both ACR or DPP, while temperature displayed in ACR is calculated from that metadat using color matrices in selected profile, according to a formula from one book (as documented in dng sdk), while DPP is probably using some other formula or slightly different color matrices
    - the same will happen if you use WB dropper on exactly the same position in the photo by both ACR and DPP
    - but, if you use the same temperature preset in ACR and DPP (for instance 5200 K), then white in ACR and DPP will probably be a bit different, because whitebalancing is performed in oposite direction now (ACR calculates RGB multipliers from that temperature and using color matrices in the profile)
I hope this was understandable, although it's a bit complicated

  • What does "Camera Profile" mean in the Camera Calibration tab in PSE 12?

I recently made the switch to edit exclusively in Photoshop Elements 12. I need help understanding what I need to select for the "Camera Profile" drop down in the Camera Calibration tab. I shoot with a Canon Mark II. Will the camera profile selection affect my prints at all? First, what does the camera profile mean? I go back and forth between Adobe Standard and Camera Standard. Sometimes I get truer color with Camera Standard than the Adobe Standard for my outside photos. I'm so confused as to which one I should be editing with. I just want to be sure this is not going to affect my prints because I just recently ordered a print from Millers and it was saturated, shadowing and skin had orange tone. I have never had a problem with my calibration and have always ordered from Millers with no problem. This is the first print I ordered after editing exclusively with PSE 12 so I'm wondering if I have setting wrong. Thanks so much!

Will the camera profile selection affect my prints at all?
It will affect prints to the same extent that it affects the monitor display, but no more than that. The differences that you see in color rendering when switching between profiles will be embodied in the jpg that you eventually make for sending to the print lab, but will not in itself cause the discrepancies you describe.

  • X-rite colorchecker passport profile created but does not appear in the  Camera Calibration tab!

I have installed x-rite colorchecker passport and lightroom 5.0. I followed the tutorial in setting up my camera profile and lightroom reported created successfully. However after restarting Lightroom, I could not find my created profile other than the Adobe Standard in the Camera Calibration tab.
    Please help !

X-Rite has a free DNG Profile Manager that can be downlaoded after registering your ColorChecker Passport here:
    http://www.xritephoto.com/ph_registration.aspx
You will be offered a link to download the free app. See if the profile you created is visible with the app.
Here's where the user camera profiles should be located with LR5:
    Windows—C: \ Users \ [your username] \ AppData \ Roaming \ Adobe \ CameraRaw \ CameraProfiles \
    Mac—Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Application Support / Adobe / CameraRaw / CameraProfiles /
Profiles are camera model specific so a Canon 600D camera profile will only be visible when a 600D raw image file is selected. You need to create profiles for each camera model separately.

  • Lightroom Camera Calibration tab

I use an iMac. I have Creative Cloud, Lightroom and Photoshop CC.  I use a Panasonic DMC GH3 but using Panasonic RAW files, RW2 format, I can not see any camera presets, Natural, Vivid etc, under the Camera Calibration tab, just Adobe Standard.  The camera is allegedly supported by Camera RAW but I can’t get beyond Adobe Standard, can anyone help please.
    Thanks in advance

Note you can build your own if you own a MacBeth 24 patch target or the newer (and more useful) X-rite Passport target.

Or you can edit an existing profile to get that 'vivid' or similar 'look' using the free Adobe DNG camera profile editor.

  • Camera calibration tab in ACR ...

When we slide the saturation slider for a primary to the left end (completely desaturated position), does it mean that we move this primary to the white point on the chromaticity diagram? Thanks ...

    Jeff Schewe wrote:
Moving the camera calibration saturation sliders to -100 does not completely desaturate the RGB colors. It only moves the saturation in a range useful for camera calibration–you would never need to completely desaturate a sensors colors for the purposes of calibration.
I see ... but as ssprengel said, if you desaturate three primaries -250 in total, input profiles on the camera calibration tab can be made monochrome. I think that the range of saturation sliders are going beyond which are required for just fine tuning camera profiles. Am I missing something?

  • Photoshop and Bridge Color Space Mismatches

I've recently scanned a number of photos (.TIFF) using the Wide Gamut Color Space (Nikon AdobeWide 4.0.0.3000).
    Bridge shows:
    Color Mode = RGB
Color Profile = Nikon AdobeWide 4.0.0.3000
However when I open them using the embedded profile, Photoshop CS5 shows on the file Info/Camera Data Tab
    Color Space = sRGB, or
    Color Space = Uncalibrated.
I opened the files in IDImager to see what it showed. It had under Technical Data
    Color Space = AdobeRGB
Color Profile = Nikon AdobeWide 4.0.0.3000
So, Bridge and IDImager seem fine; Photoshop seems to have some difficulty.
    The monitor is calibrated.
Why would Photoshop behave in this way? Is there anything I should be concerned about in what PS may be doing.

Probably something to do with your Edit->Color Settings. Is the second RGB dropdown set to Convert to Working RGB?

  • SRGB monitor and SRGB color space in After Effects

Hello, I would like to ask some really basics about color correction. I do mostly animations and editing that plays on web and television sometimes. Im using a dell 2713hm monitor. Should i use the sRGB profile when i color correct? Also should i set my After Effects also to sRGB color space? thanx

My monitor comes calibrated in sRGB i think. But in any case, i m getting the spy4elite tool these days so will fix this issue.
So lets suppose it is. And please lets keep the explanation as simple as possible, cause i have read A LOT and i got confused.
From my understanding when having 8bit and i need to export for web, i should use the sRGB both in profile monitor, in AE color management and in output module? If that is correct, i wanna know what i do when i do 32 bit compositing, and also what i do when i got things for television (either motion graphics/3d or footage)
    thanx

So I got the iPad 2 last Wednesday and tried facetime. It seemed to work then froze, but I gave up as it was still new and I was still figuring things out. Anyway i'd use the camera a few times (maybe 3) and made maybe 2 quick videos, nothing big. I never use the camera much. Today I went to videotape my nephew and clicked the camera screen, but it wouldnt leave the shutter screen. If i restore it to default, it works. But as soon as I sync my iPad up so it restores all my settings, the camera freezes. Obviously facetime and photobooth don't load either.
I think a few people have this issue, what was the resolution? if i take it to apple will they give me a new one on the spot or send it in for repairs, and im without it for a while?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If when you restore the iPad to the factory settings the camera works, then there is nothing wrong with the iPad, you have something corrupt in the backup that you are using to restore your previous settings. I would delete the backup and start fresh. Go to iTunes/Preferences/Devices and delete any and all backups there for the iPad.
Then configure and sync the iPad as if it were new from the box for the first time.

Deleting my backups and starting fresh kinda *****. I'd rather not have to re-do all my settings like email and my apps. Its not that i have a lot of apps, maybe 5 or so I use, but still, its a bit of a pain. I guess I can TRY it... can't hurt right...
I dont want to just delete my backups though, i'll store them somewhere else (i think i remember where apple stores them) and copy them over later if i need to.
Worth a shot, better this then my iPhone which has a ton of apps I use for work. Im still setting the iPad up for my work stuff. Will let you know how i make out.
BTW the home/power reset didnt work, ive obviously tried this many times, and just now while writing this. Same issues.

  • PSE 10 as external editor for Aperture 3 - 8-bit TIFF and what color space?

    Hi all,
I'm taking the plunge and trying PSE 10 as my external editor for Aperture 3.  I understand that I need to export as 8-bit TIFF files (not 16) because PSE can't do certain things with 16-bit files.  Is that right?  Should I specify a color space in Aperture or leave it as "no profile selected"?  (I don't know much about color spaces; I'm not a pro.)  I print on an Epson RX580 Stylus Photo printer, if that matters.
I'll be grateful for any help and advice.  Thanks.

Can I suggest you buy Philip Andrews book, Advanced Photoshop Elements 10.  he explains colour spaces and much much more very clearly and exactly what can be done with 16 bit files and what you then have to change to 8 bit to accomplish.  He's written basic and advanced guides for Elements since day one.  Usually available from Amazon for under £20.

  • Photoshop and working color spaces

In how many color spaces Photoshop can work correctly?
Can only work with gamma 1.8 and 2.2 ones or even with linear or L* gamma color spaces?
It is enough that the working spaces has RGB=0 0 0 mapped to L*=0 and RGB  255 255 255 mapped to L*=100?
    Thank you
    Marco

I don't know where in the past I read that in Photoshop the curves, levels and so on work correctly only if the image encoding color space has: pure black (L*=0) mapped to 0 0 0, pure white (L*=100) mapped to 255 255 255, the gray axis effectively acromathic (a,b=0) and the gamma encoding is 1.8 or 2.2.
These are the reasons because (I read) in the working RGB color space is not advisable choosing the monitor color profile.
    Thank you for your considerations

  • DNG profiles, Calibration tab and HLS

X-Rite and Adobe have provisions for creating custom DNG profiles. DataColor just announced a product that appears to operate like these two but instead of making DNG profiles (or as we had in the old days, altering the Calibration Tab), updates the HSL controls. My understanding is that DNG profiles and the Calibration tab operate in a different order of the processing, prior to all the sliders above them. My understanding is there are benefits for doing this but I’d like to know more about this. The question is, what are the practical implications of “calibrating” via a target that affects HSL sliders instead of producing a DNG profile, or at the very least, altering the calibration sliders? Eric you out there bud?

    Andrew,
Eric is very active in the ACR forum, including in the last 24 hours, and there's no way he'd be ignoring you if he had read this post of yours.
My impression is that this DNG forum has been neglected if not outright abandoned.  Just look at the obsolete and mistyped "announcement" at the top of the index page.
I would suggest posting in the ACR forum instead.

  • Camera Calibration Profiles And 5D MKII

Until now I have been using a Canon 1Ds MKII and have had not only the downloaded Canon Camera Profiles available in the Calibration panel of the Develop Module but also the Adobe Standard, ACR 2.4, and ACR 4.4 profiles.  Recently I got a Canon 5D MKII and in Lightroom I only have available the Canon Camera Profiles and Adobe Standard.  The ACR 2.4 and 4.4 don't seem to be available as options with the 5D MKII RAW files.  I liked having them as they served as alternative rough starting points.  I am wondering what happened to them and how they can be gotten back as an option for the 5D MKII.  Has this happened to anyone else?
While I am at it....are the Canon camera profiles I downloaded for the 1Ds MKII the same as for the 5D MKII or do I have to download different one...I suspect they are the same or Lightroom wouldn't offer them to me...is that correct?
    Howard

The legacy ACR X.x profiles are no more produced nor included for newer cameras (AFAIK, since ACR 5.1/LR 2.1). The Adobe Standard is the new default starting point for these.
While I am at it....are the Canon camera profiles I downloaded for the 1Ds MKII the same as for the 5D MKII or do I have to download different one...I suspect they are the same or Lightroom wouldn't offer them to me...is that correct?
The profiles are different for each camera model, even if they share the same name in the Calibration panel. If you can see them when developing 5DII files, it means the camera-specific profiles are installed for your particular camera model (otherwise, you wouldn't see them).
