Camera compatibilty with Mac and Iphoto 04

I have been search the Apple site for a list of compatible cameras for iPhoto, and keep getting back to the main iPhoto page which tells me that the link is missing, or I typed the wrong URL...
We have a Fuji A700 which is not Apple Mac compatible. It also has a few problems so we are thinking of getting another camera. Does anyone have any good experience with a compatible camera, especially using iPhoto 04. We are in Australia, and the makes and models are not always the same as in other parts of the world. But I would be interested especially in makes which are easy to use, have a big viewing screen to peer through, and buttons which are not designs for midgets but can cope with arthritic fingers!

OzYves: Go to Hard drive>Users>your accountname>Pictures. Inside the Pictures folder you should find at least one folder with "iPhoto Library" in its name. Open that folder (or folders), and *without moving, deleting or adding anything to the folder(s)* check inside to see whether your pictures are there. If there is any library folder that doesn't seem to contain any pictures, or that only contains the last 23 pictures you tried to import, move that library folder out onto the desktop. If there are more than two library folders in the Pictures folder, leave the one that contains the largest number of pictures or that occupies the largest amount of hard drive storage space, and move the others to the desktop.
Open iPhoto. If it tells you its library is missing, opt to find the library, not to create a new one. Navigate to the Library folder in the Pictures folder and select it for opening. If it opens but no pictures are displayed, quit iPhoto and rebuild the Library: press and hold the Shift and Option keys while starting iPhoto; hold them down until you're asked whether you want to rebuild the library. Click Yes, then click Save. A new iPhoto Library_1 folder will be created inside your Pictures folder, alongside the original, corrupt iPhoto Library folder, and the new library will open (if iPhoto quits unexpectedly at the end of the rebuild, just reopen it; that happens sometimes and is usually harmless). Once you're satisfied that all is well with the new library, trash the old one and empty the trash to regain the disk space it occupies. If you get this far, post back for instructions on reclaiming the contents of any other iPhoto Library folders that you moved to the desktop previously.
I confess to being mystified by the message you received about "this version of iPhoto." All I can think of is that you have, or had, iPhoto Library folders that had been created using more than one version of iPhoto. If that doesn't sound right to you, I can't explain the message at all.
"The device you removed was not properly put away. Data might have been lost or damaged. Before you unplug your device, you must first select its icon in the Finder and choose Eject from the File menu."
That error message appears when you disconnect a USB or FireWire storage device prematurely. I can imagine it appearing if such a device were connected and then a faulty USB or FireWire cable were moved in such a way as to sever the connection accidentally, without actually unplugging the cable. So I suggest connecting your camera with a different (preferably new) USB cable and seeing whether a bad cable, rather than the xD card format, is the culprit in the Mac's failure to recognize the card in your new camera. The USB cables supplied with many cameras are thin, delicate and really of poor quality. Individual conductors in such cables can break without any outward sign of damage.
If your camera used any card format other than xD, I would probably urge you to buy an inexpensive card reader and remove the camera itself from the process of transfarring pictures to your Mac. You would then remove the card from the camera, insert it in the card reader, connect the reader to the Mac using its own USB cable, and expect to see the card mounted on the desktop. You could then import pictures directly from the card into iPhoto, or copy them to a folder and later import them from the folder. But because my experience has been that Macs often don't recognize xD cards even in a functional card reader, I can't recommend that workaround to you.

  • Recommendation Request: Best flatbed scanner for use with Mac and iPhoto?

I have a flatbed scanner that Mac doesn't recognize. It's 9 years old, does a great job, but only works with Windows. Period. Don't ask what model or anything, I've already done the research, it's hopeless. MOVING ON... I'm tired of BootCamping to Windows, running scans, and then rebooting and hunting down the files...
So, what flatbed scanner do you use, rank it on scale of 1-10, and how much did it cost?
This thread might be useful to many people... FLATBED scanners, only, please. Make another thread for sheetfed scanners if you like.

This site has some good info on many scanners: Scanner Reviews | Flatbed Scanner |.
I'd look for one with high optical resolution. It's akin to the zoom in digital cameras, optical vs digital. FWIW I use a Canon 8600F (now replace by the 8800F) which does slides, film strips as well a photos. What I like about it is that you can scan multiple photos and have each saved to it's own file. Other brands of scanners offer that as well I'm sure but it'sjust a feature to consider. My scanner also came with a bundled copy of Photoshop Elements for Mac. Not the latest version but worked very well. Its replacement also bundles PSE.

  • HELP Newbie with mac and iphoto

Hey experts - I loaded some photos into iphoto and then made a slideshow with music - how do I get the slideshow with the music into my iweb site? Specifically I want it on a particular page but I have come this far and don't know what to do next. Thanks

    JHIN
Well now you have to export the Slideshow as a Quick time movie, and add that to your iWeb page. How to do? Select the Slideshow in the Source (or Left Hand) pane and go File -> Export. Then complete the export `(after deciding size etc.) and you can then bring that movie to your iWeb site.

  • Another distinct problem with .mac and iphoto

I don't get the connection error. Mine says it uploaded fine, but the photos never seem to make it to the server. It takes a few minutes, shows the progress and everything. then tells me its done and what would i like to do. It either publishes a blank page, or it publishes all the frames and links, but no pics due to the bad upload.
any ideas, or are we going to have to wait for the next update.
right now, I have just uploaded my pics by hand and will make it by hand online. It takes longer, but it works.

That's how i do it normally. It gives me an opportunity to "condition" the files more extensively, i.e. specify the size I want and taylor the quality to get the file size down, and add a watermark to the photo before uploading. Guess I'm a control freak but it works for me.

  • New to mac and iphoto, questions about photo structure & organization

I bought a new Macbook Pro a couple of days ago and am still figuring things out. I wasn't displeased with windows...I just decided to try a mac anyway, So far, I adore it except for one thing, the pictures.
I spent hours researching whether to download and use picasa 3 for mac or iphoto. I decided on picasa....and now I've changed my mind. (Mostly because I tried to take pictures of the moon tonight, and they looked great in camera, but Picasa could only pick up a black screen whearas iphoto actually saw and defined the moon- and with the editing software on the two, the picasa auto-edit looked like a picture that was created in microsoft paint, and iphoto came out with a beautifully contrasted photo).
Now that I decided to use iphoto, I have been researching how to switch and still seem to have a lot of questions. (I've poked around numerous forums but have found conflicting answers on different sites).
    1) I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year. I know iphoto organizes events, which it seems to determine based on photo similarity. Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
    2) Is it possible to stop iphoto from organizing my pictures and just trust me on what I want?
    3) All of my friends and family use PCs, and there is a chance that due to financial concerns, when I eventually replace my macbook pro (far in the future) I could switch to a pc. Does iphoto make transferring pictures more difficult? (If I understand correctly, it does not change the photo file, a jpeg is still a jpeg but I want to be sure)
    4) I do not want iphoto to duplicate all of the pictures already in my library....if I import from finder-users-pictures, will it simply use those, or duplicate all 150gb worth of pictures?
    5) Any other tips for someone completely new to macs and iphoto?
    6) This is very silly, but how do I uninstall picasa (I know how to uninstall on a windows but want to make sure I do things correctly on my mac!)
Also, just a "bonus"- regarding events vs. files I create, will iphoto create events within the program but leave my file structure in the library it imports from alone? If I use finder to go to where I store my photos, will I still see my file structure regardless of what iphoto does?(Does that make sense? I'm having a hard time trying to describe it)
I apologize if this question is foolish or misplaced- I did read many other posts but didn't see the answers I was looking for.

Your questions are neither foolish nor misplaced.
The first thing I strongly suggest is that you make a trial iPhoto Library. Import 100 or 200 pics and explore. Iphoto isn't right for everybody, and if you're going to use it you will need to rethink things a little.
    1) I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year. I know iphoto organizes events, which it seems to determine based on photo similarity. Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
A: Events are based entirely on Date and Time not on 'photo similarity' You can set the interval for what makes an Event in the iPhoto Preferences: iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> General Pane: Autosplit into Events... And select from the drop down menu.
Will my photo structure still appear in finder -> pictures?
Yes or no, depending... iPhoto can run as a Referenced or Managed Library. In the former case, yes you files will be visible in the Finder, in the latter case they won't.
Note that Referenced or Managed refers +only to file storage+ It offers no extra functionality, it does nothing at all. App like iPhoto are your go-to app for your photos. If you use it, then you never access the photos via the Finder. Ever. It's always via iPhoto or the many, many hooks into the OS that it has.
I'll detail more on Referenced v Managed below.
    2) Is it possible to stop iphoto from organizing my pictures and just trust me on what I want?
I'm not sure what you mean by this. Iphoto does basic date and time organisation by default. You can change it, you can change the location of the photos in Events, merge them and then using the other tools available - Albums, Smart Albums, Faces, Places etc you can organise your photos whatever way you want.
But what do you mean by pictures. There is a distinction between Photos - the image of your child holding his dog - and files: A Jpeg is just a file. Iphoto is designed for you to +forget about the jpeg+ and get on with the interesting bit: the pics of your younger and his pet.
A Jpeg is a Jpeg is a Jpeg. If you migrate to another app or an entire OS you can export the photos plus any and all metadata you've added to the Finder and move it on. (Caveat: You cannot export Faces. There is no agreed standard on any system for exchanging this info.)
    4) I do not want iphoto to duplicate all of the pictures already in my library....if I import from finder-users-pictures, will it simply use those, or duplicate all 150gb worth of pictures?
It can do either. And this brings me back to the Referenced v Managed discussion above. By default, iPhoto will Manage the files, that is, it will copy them into the Library. You can choose not to, but I strongly recommend that you don't:
    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
*If you want to edit the photo in another application:*
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
    5) Any other tips for someone completely new to macs and iphoto?
    *To Push Home a point*
For someone inexperienced with Macs and inexperienced with iPhoto I cannot stress enough that Managed Library is the way to go. I understand there is comfort in seeing all those folders. But inside the Library that's all there is: all those folders, stored so that an inexperienced user can't grub things up!
The iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. Want to see inside?
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
Now close that window and forget about it.
So, once you've imported your photos to iPhoto in a Managed Library, the surplus duplicates are +your folders+. Of course, in time, trash them to get back the wasted disk space. But don't do it today or tomorrow. There's no hurry. When you feel confident that you understand how iPhoto is working and that's it's working for you, theat's the time to reclaim the space.
I organize my pictures by folders with the month and year.
If you want to duplicate your Folder Tree in iPhoto:
Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.
    6) This is very silly, but how do I uninstall picasa (I know how to uninstall on a windows but want to make sure I do things correctly on my mac!)
Drag the app to the trash and empty it.

  • Help, I installed parallel and windows, and opened videos (on an external hard disk) with windows, and now cannot open them with Mac, and use i movies.  How do I reverse this?

Help, I installed parallel and windows, and opened videos (on an external hard disk) with windows, and now cannot open them with Mac, and use i movies.  How do I reverse this?

Paragraphs help the reader, just saying.
What are you actually trying to do? Why do you need "DVD size" folders if you're creatng an Archive on an external hard drive?
Also, I understand burning folders instead of individual photos or albums gives you more space on a DVD.
It makes no difference at all.
How can I keep the captions on my photos (not events) when I print or transfer to a new folder?
You can export while writing the metadata to the file in most cases.
Tne only way I know is to copy photos from the Windows to folders on my HD, then copy and paste photos or albums or events to HD, then create a new folder and fill it to the appropriate DVD size.
HD? Another HD? You use HD there in a way that makes no sense. What's the point of 'DVD size'?
I also thought I should download future photos to my Canon programming that comes with EOS cameras and edit and then decide which photos to save to iPhoto library and which to save only to my archival HD?
Does this have any relation to the previous questions? You know you can delete from iPhoto, right?
You're somewhat confused and you need to
    1. Decide what exactly you want to do
    2. Then go about it.
If I understand you correctly - and there's no guarantee that I do -  the easiest thing is to bring all your Photos into iPhoto and do everything from there.
You can have an archive on an external disk, you can sort and select and edit with or via iPhoto

  • External Hard Drive Compatible with Mac and Windows?

So my old laptop is a Dell Latitude and I bought a Western Digital external hard drive and put all my files/pics/music on it. The information the WD came with said its compatible with Mac and Windows, but when I plug it into my brand spankin new Macbook, it doesn't register with the computer and won't show up. What's going on?
    Message was edited by: philliesphan

I recently ran into that problem. In order to have the hard drive compatible for both PC and Mac it must be in a FAT32 format. In order to do this though all your files will be deleted (in order to reformat). You can do this by plugging in the hard drive into you mac and going under disk utility and there you will find your hard drive and under erase change the format to FAT32 and then you press erase (all will be deleted off the external drive though)

  • Since installing Mac Mavericks all my friends with Macs and I have problems with the cursor disappearing, only in Firefox, Safari is fine...

I have stopped using Firefox as nothing I have done has fixed this problem. I have tried shutting down Firefox and rebooting it, I cleared all my add-ons and then added adblock back (that's the only one) but it still doesn't work. I've deleted large files so that I have more space - I can't think of anything else that will work. I have spoken to four of my friends with Macs and they are all having the same problem with Firefox since Mavericks.

Hi thanks very much for your reply. I did a few things like delete my add-ons and I don't have the problem of the disappearing cursor (sounds like a Sherlock Holmes story) any more but it seems to have been a mac issue as there were many complaints on the Apple forums of the cursor disappearing since the Mavericks OS and not just in Firefox but in multiple programs. Looks like they've fixed it somehow!

  • How to format flash drive to be compatible with Mac and PC

Hey guys, I was stupid and formatted my 8G flash drive to a different format by accident. Not FAT32 which it was originally. It originally worked find with my Mac and PC. I can't get it back now. I went into Disk Utility and the only way I can format it back is to MS-DOS(FAT) and all the other Apple formats. When I erase it to MS-DOS(FAT) and plug it into my PC it comes up and wants to format it to a 200MB FAT32 patition?? How can I solve this? Thanks

    Hi,
FAT32 (called MS-DOS in OSX Disk Utility) is the file system to use for compatibility with Mac and PC.
The "200MB partition" message you get also indicates that you changed the partition scheme on the flash drive to GPT (GUID Partition Table).
Use Disk Utility to verify this and if needed change the partition scheme back to MBR (Master Boot Record).

  • Airport express with mac and windows

No problems at all with mac and airport express but I have a vaio with window xp sp2 and a pc with vista home premium and even if they connect to the wireless network they cannot receive an ip address. How can I solve this problem? ( As always, we have to waste a lot of time when we work with microsoft operating systems... ;-)) )
    Thanks

Thank you for providing me with the exact model of your PowerBook. This model was available with either an optional or built-in AirPort Card. This card is only able to connect to 802.11b wireless networks with a maximum bandwidth of 11 Mbps. This card is also capable of connecting to wireless networks that use the TKIP encryption protocol. This protocol is used in either the WEP or WPA standard. The card is NOT capable of connecting to wireless networks that use the AES/CCMP encryption protocol that is part of the WPA2 standard.
However, some of the earliest versions of the AirPort Card did not work with WPA's TKIP implementation ... so it is possible that you may not be able to connect to an AirPort Express Base Station (AX) configured for "WPA/WPA2 Personal." It may also be problematic to connect to the same AX if it is configured to use one of the 802.11n modes that offer compatibility to 802.11b/g clients. This latter item does not sound like an issue as you are connecting, but wireless security does.
WEP introduces its own set of "problems." Not to mention, that is it completely un-secure. The following Apple Support article may be helpful in getting all of your wireless clients connected when using WEP: Joining an encrypted WEP or WPA Wi-Fi network
