Camera Connection Kit ROCKS

After a several weeks wait, I finally received my camera connection kit today. It's small, simple, and easy to use - just plug it in, and it works - at least that was my experience.
I bought it primarily to download photos from my camera, and be able to review them while out in the field - something that in the past, I either had to download to my laptop, or view the pictures on the 2 inch screen on the back of the camera. I took some pictures, plugged in the USB cable, and the Ipad instantly gave me opportunity to download. Once downloaded, I was able to use FILTERSTORM APP (Free I believe) to do some pretty powerful editing. Yeah, I can do all that with my computers, but it was fun to see that I could also do it all from the iPad just as easily. I don't plan on traveling with my laptop any more (unless I have to), so it's great to know that I can do this stuff.
But beyond the photo transfer, what I wasn't ready for, and am totally thrilled with is the ability to hook up a usb keyboard through the camera connection kit, and type away on the iPAD like never before. I had heard that you could hook up a keyboard, so I tried it with the original iMac wired keyboard that I had stashed away after I bought the bluetooth keyboard (the aluminum small one). Unfortunately, the wired keyboard requires too much USB power, so it didn't work. But I have an assortment of old dell keyboards, including a pretty basic plastic usb keyboard, and I plugged that in, and it works great. When you connect, you get a stern warning from the iPAD that the device isn't supported, but after you dismiss it, the keyboard works just great. I'm even finding that the keyboard's arrow keys allow me to have better control over editing that the native ipad editing (select, cut, copy, paste). I bet if I were using an apple keyboard, I'd have even better control!
I'm so impressed by how much better my iPad experience is (when it comes to having to type), that I'm going to have to reconsider the whole idea of spending $70 on another bluetooth apple keyboard. Maybe I'll look for something cheaper, but I sure do like those apple keyboards. The built-in pop-up keyboard on the ipad is good for a little typing, but nothing substantial. that's been my experience.
Next on the list of things to try, I've heard that the camera connection kit supposedly allows you hook up USB audio devices. I have a specific need/desire to be able to do some audio recording, with higher quality than what you get with the built-in mike. I'm exploring the idea of doing some pro audio recording - 2 track line input from mixing console at concerts, or even audience microphones. Yeah I have other equipment that does this, but I'm intrigued about the 64gb space, and the long iPad battery life. Beyond the iPAD, I'm thinking that the camera connection kit may even offer the same functionality on the new IPhone4, where I'm really thinking ahead to doing some video recording, with high quality stereo feed, an alternative to buying a new HD video camera. Maybe this stuff is just a dream, and in the end, I'll be better off just doing all these audio & video projects with the normal devices, and not the iPad. But I'm interested in exploring just how much the iPAD can do.
Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble on. I really haven't enjoyed typing much on the iPAD until I hooked up this **** keyboard.
So.. bottom line, camera connection kit... THREE THUMBS UP!

For external keyboards, I've been using the apple aluminum wireless one, myself. I actually bought that keyboard mainly because it was the smallest full-sized wireless keyboard around. So I was pleasantly surprised that the iPad itself was built to use Bluetooth devices such as that (and other things). So I really don't have much of a use for the additional capabilities of the USB connection. But, it's good that you we're finally able to get your kit. I guess, my mistake was actually trying to search for stores to get the item instead of trying to order it online, first. Otherwise, it seems you miss out on the accessory this summer.

  • MIDI, Gargeband, Camera connection kit...

Current setup: I have a Kawai Digital Piano, with both a plain double MIDI connector, and a USB connector (also for MIDI). I use a normal USB <> USB cable purchased from BB to connect the piano to my MBP, where I use GarageBand to record and edit music.
Optimal setup: Use the same piano and the same USB cable to plug into a Camera Connection Kit, which would then plug into my iPad. I could record and edit music with GarageBand for iPad.
Question: Is this possible? Namely, will the camera connection kit/ iOS recognize a USB midi interface, or do I need to buy a MIDI <> MIDI cable, plus a MIDI <> Dock connector adapter. (if so, what works, I haven't been able to find a definitive answer/review). And then, will GarageBand recognize this? How? Will it record as if I was playing the Touch Instrument, or as just audio? What other apps would work for this?
    Thanks in advance. :)
    Liam
note: No, I don't have a Camera Connection Kit yet, I can't quite justify the $30 just for occasional downloads from an SD card, but if this worked as described above it would be worth it

I believe this is possible. There is a Youtube Video showing some guy using a You Rock midi guitar contoller plugged into the camea connection kit to input notes into Garage Band. You have to look up the video. Keywords ipad, garage band, you rock, guitar.
I'm planning on buying the You Rock midi guitar and apple camera connection kit myself.

Can I only use my USB camer connective kit with my camera and not a card reader?

Which card reader? Are you using an SD card in it or some other form factor?
As long as you're targeting an SD card with photos or movies, it should work same as connecting to a camera....but in that case, there is really no need since the camera kit includes an SD reader.

Once pictures are moved from your camera to your iPad (using the camera connection kit), how do you get the photos off of the iPad? They do not show up in my photo stream or my iCloud. I am able to see any photo I took on the iPad using the iPad camera (in iTunes, photo stream, or when I open windows explorer and browse the iPad director), however I cannot see any photos transfered from my camera to the iPad. The camera connection kit must have put my photos in a directory I cannot get to and cannot sync.

I don't think you can connect a printer since you won't have the printer drivers. I use FingerPrint from collobos.com to print to my non-AirPrint printers.

Camera connection kit for ipad 2. Can this kit be used with ipad air and if so what adapter(s) are required please

You can try the 30 pin to lightning adapter but I'm not sure if that'll work. So if you get it to experiment, make sure you can return it. Apple does sell a SD to lightning adapter for the newer devices. So that should be a sure bet. The main downside is that your 30 pin camera kit came with both USB and SD for 29 and now the USB adapter is 19 and the SD adapter 29, so more expensive.
You may want to look into third party adapters, but make sure you use a reputable manufacturer (ie not a cheap no-name off amazon) because iOS7 brought with it software that looks for a signed chip in the adapter. And a chip is 'signed' when a company gets apple's permission to make accessories. I would suggest sticking with companies like Belkin, Kensington and Targus. They seem to be of a better reputation when making things and would have a signed chip.

  • Is there some way to make the iPad Camera Connection Kit work on the iPod touch?

I bought the Camera Connection Kit because a tech said it would work with my iPod Touch, but I get the message that the iPod does not support that connection. I would really like itt to work because I have used an older iPod to back up photos while on vacation. I would simply connect the camera up to the iPod and it would download all the photos from the camera. It was an excellent way not to have to buy lots of SD cards. This kit has a slot for an SD card and I could copy directly from that. So if anyone out there knows how I could make it work, I'd appreciate your input.

Is your MacBook Pro new?  Did it come with Lion preinstalled?  If not do you have the iDVD application in the Applications folder?
If not I suggest you purchase a copy of the iLife 11 disk from Amazon.com or eBay.com or other 3rd party supplier.  Apple does not sell iDVD any more and those items are getting harder to get.
Once you obtain iDVD go to iPhoto and bring up the slideshow.  Then use the Share ➙ iDVD menu option. That will send the slideshow to iDVD from which you can burn a video DVD disk.
I suggest you follow this workflow while working in iDVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Why does Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit no longer work with iOS8

Why does Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit no longer work with iOS8?

The kit is firmly inserted in thhe iPad's dock ? You could also try a reset and see if it's recognised after the iPad has restarted : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
I haven't had problems using the kit with SD cards from Canon cameras . What capacity is the card, and it's an SD or SDHC card - if it's an SDXC card that's formatted as ExFAT then it won't be recognised

  • IPad camera connection kit is working on ios 6.1.3 or no?

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to find an answer to this question
Is iPad camera connection kit working on the new update iOS 6.1.3?
I need to know this kinda urgent now, because my iPad has been acting really weird, but I hadn't update yet, because I'm scared my camera connection kit won't work anymore, and I need it alot because I work with cameras.
Anyone who already update and the camera connection kit still working? Please
I have an iPad 2 currently iOS 6
    Have a great day!

Works on my iPad 2 also. I transfer pics/videos using an SDHC card and also using a USB flash drive.
To use a flash drive, Plug the  flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Third Party 2 in 1 Camera Connection Kit and iOS 4.2

Has anyone tried the third party 2 in 1 Camera Connection Kit with iOS 4.2? This is the connector that has both the SD slot as well as the USB slot in one unit, rather than the two separate units on the Apple branded one. The third party one is cheaper and 1 less thing to carry around or potentially lose.
    Thanks!

  • Camera connection kit doesn't work...help

I bought the camera connection kit and tried using 2 different SD cards to load my pictures onto my ipad and nothing happens when i plug it in. the USB piece works fine when i hook it up to my other camera but why can't i get the memory card piece to work? any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks!

Hi Kathie and welcome to the Apple Discussions.
How are your SD cards formatted? If memory serves, the iPad wants to see the cards in DCIM. Since the USB to camera is working, it sounds like the format of the SD cards is not what the iPad wants to see. What kind of camer are you using, and if you look at the card on a computer, what does it show you...what is the name or label of the top level folder?

  • SD card import faulty - Camera Connection Kit

I am travelling around and the camera connection kit has been working well for importing pics from my SD cards. However one day the import warned me I was importing 1gb of pics, but only had 0.7gb free on the iPad. It asked me whether to import until the iPad was full, so I said yes.
Since then I deleted some movies I had on the iPad, so I now have lots of free space. Now most photos are imported showing just a "jpg" logo and the photo cannot be opened. This happens on any SD card I put in the iPad. I wonder if perhaps the iPad needs some sort of disk utility or scandisk to be run, but I can't find such a utility.

I tried powering down several times. I have also done the reset you suggested. Unfortunately the problem remains.
As I am travelling, I am not in a position to do a sync. Both the iPad's "About" and an iPad info app I have report 7.5gb free.
I wonder if there is a utility that can truly free the space (assuming that is the problem)?

See this article: iPad: Using the iPad Camera Connection Kit
No, this canot be done, afaik. When your camera or card is connected, you will see the thumbnails in the camera pane, but not full size preview. So to browse your photos on the iPad you will need to import them to your camera roll. But you need not delete them from the camera or card after importing, so you might simply import selected photos to your camera roll from the camera grid and then delete them again from the camera roll after importing and browsing, without removing them from the card/camera.
