Camera Connector Kit... Where to buy one locally?

What the heck is taking so long for these to be available to the average joe walking into a bricks and mortar store. Future Shop etc. can't even get stock. eBay is ridiculous with the prices, almost $75 with shipping from the US to the US or Canada. My Apple store doesn't have a clue when they are coming.
I bid on eBay and when the price goes over $50 I stop as this thing can't be worth more than $10 bucks. I don't get it.
Why havn't the iPad people made these available to the local Apple Stores or FutureShops etc.? Why make a product then not supply it? Did they not think people would want this item? Grrrrrrr.
Sorry, I'm just frustrated with the archaic way of syncing photos and not being able to arrange or delete them directly on the iPad.

The camera kit I ordered back in early May hasn't yet shipped and according to the latest information now won't ship until September. Given that delay and the resultant backlog of orders, I would very much doubt that any retail store anywhere in the world will have stock.
What the production problem is I have no idea, but it's certainly not that Apple didn't anticipate demand, not when they can't even fill orders that are almost three months old.
We'll all just have to wait.

PS - saw something that suggested the iPad had a maximum file size of 16mb for photos, not sure if this is correct, but I have tried smaller JPEG files and they still aren't recognised.

If your camera supports both PTP and Mass Storage Device modes, it may be necessary to use both modes to import all media content.
If some files do not import as expected using one mode, try switching to the other mode and importing again.
Note: Some cameras may refer to PTP as Pictbridge or PTP/Pictbridge.

Will Apple Camera Connector Kit Import .PDF files? I need to import large (60MB plus) .PDF files created in Powerpoint to my iPad. They are too large to be practical for e-mail.

Open GoodReader on the iPad. Click on the wifi icon in the menu bar at the bottom of the app. A popup window will open up giving you your local URL. Open Safari on the desktop computer and place that URL in the address bar. A page will open up with directions on how to send a file. The file will be send over the wifi connection to your iPad.
To add a little... In Safari on the desktop computer. Select file to upload: Choose file--->Navigate to the file on your desktop computer---> Click on the Upload selected file button. There will be a red warning box in the popup window on the iPad. When that disappears the the transfer is complete. If you get a warning can't find page in Safari you don't have the wifi connection in Goodreader turned on. Just click on the wifi icon button in Goodreader to fix. You can bookmark the URl in Safari fir later use.

Is there a camera connector kit for the i pod touch? can you use the camera connector kit for the ipad on the itouch? are those connections/connectors on the bottom of the ipad the same as the ones on the itouch?

I saw a company pre-selling a third-party camera connector kit a few months ago, but darned if I can't find that website now (frustrating!). I recall it was something like $89 US.
I would love to have an SD card transfer kit, particularly since Apple now sells one for the iPad. Having one for the iPod Touch would be great.

People report it is still possible to use a wired USB keyboard with the CCK, if you use a powered USB hub to get around the "not enough power" error message. (I have done this with an older Apple USB keyboard my non-jailbroken iPad1 on iOS 4.3.3.) Normally, powered USB hubs have a AC power adapter so you lose portability unless you can find a battery powered USB hub. At this point, the (in)convinience of the USB hub becomes an issue, depending on what you get.
And wired USB keyboard were never supported for the iPad. So there's no guarantee that it will continue to work with future iPad updates from Apple. So best to go with a Bluetooth keyboard unless you have a specific USB keyboard that you "must" use. If you have all the equipment already, I say give it a try. But I would not recommend trying a USB keyboard if you have to purchase anything.

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

Problems with iPad camera connector kit

I used the camera connector kit yesterday with my sd card and it worked fine. I have tried to use it again today and it comes up with Contents not available, cannot read the connected storage media. Any suggestions as to how to get it to work?

How are the photos getting onto the card, directly from the camera or are you copying them onto the card from your computer ? If you are copying them onto the card then you need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card, with the photos underneath it, and the photo filenames need to be exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension i.e. in a similar format as if a camera had created/written them.
If the card has come straight from the camera then try a reset of the iPad and see if the photos are then recognised : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

You can use iPhoto for the import. iLife apps are integrated. From within iMovie you have direct access to iTunes for adding music, and iPhoto for photos and videos in the iPhoto library.
Or you can use the Image Capture application for the import if you prefer placing such imports into manually created folders and not using iPhoto.

Camera connector kit not working at all

I bought the camera connector kit and can't get it to work.
I don't really use the camera to take photos or shoot videos. I bought the kit mainly to add storage to my brand new iPad (3).
What I have tried to do so far, is:
- create a DCIM folder on a USB stick AND on an SD card
- copy .jpeg and H.264 video encoded files in those folders
- insert the different connectors in the iPad
- with the 32gb USB key, I got a message "not enough power"
- with a 4gb USB key, all I got was " no photo to import"
- with the SD card, once again, "no photo to import"
So, basically, nothing works. Am I doing anything wrong or is there something else I could try.

The CCK can only be used to import photos/videos to the iPad. Can't be used to export photos/videos or other files, or use like an external hard drive.
Are you opening the Photos app when you try to import the photos & are they identified as .jpg?

HT4101 Camera connector kit not working with ipad3. Not at all able to see any photo . Have tried both the USB connector directly with camera and thru card reader. Tried by copying photos to DCIM folder also.

Got a iPad camera connector kit. It is not working as expected. It is not able to read any photos. Both the USB connector and sd card reader arenot showing any photos on iPad. Tried copying all photos directly in DCIM folder. Still no result.
Any other setting needs to be changed?

The photos are 8 character long and extension is .jpg
The file names are 8 characters long with 3 as alphapet followed by an "_" and then 4 numbers.
Initially the photos were in a folder inside DCIM folder. I manually copied them to DCIM folder, still no result.
Can you advice.

Using the Camera Connector Kit I am able to copy SONY Digital camera MP4 files. I am unable to play it on the iPad. I have tested this on 4.2 and 4.3GM of iOS.
With more and more people using iPads this type of functionality should be working.

My iPhone 3G running iOS 4 no longer transfers photos to my iPad using the camera connector kit. Any similar or dissimilar experiences with any type of iPhone and the camera connector kit?

The camera connection kit uses Bluetooth drivers. That's why unexpected things like microphones work. I had to turn on Bluetooth for the wired connection to work between my iPhone and my iPad. I learned this on a podcast with Andy Ihnatko.

Camera connector kit cck

Purchased a new iPad (3rd gen) and the CCK camera connector kit. But, iPad and connector not communicating. It will not read any SD card. I tried a standard SD card, a SDHC micro in an adapter and a standard SDHC-nothing. Imagines are all jpeg from Canon digital camera or other sources. I don't even get what the manual calls a camera icon/tab. Any help is appreciated.

The naming quirk is, unfortunately, something that you do have to discover. I tried to do a lot of research and ended up findinig it out on my own.
Now I have been able to use it to import home made movie files - thus kinda expanding my viewing options with the simple investment of some larger capacity SD cards and the limits of the naming convention, but it does have that shortcoming. They are not very good at spelling out any limitations and jsut seem to operate under the presumption that every camera out there uses the DCIM folder, 8 character name style.

Camera connector kit as USB port?

I'm looking at purchasing the camera connector kit for my father who wants to be able to use a USB port with his iPad while he's on an extended trip.
My hope is that the USB port would allow him to download pictures/files onto a flashdrive and also use a mouse.
Based on what I've read I'm not sure if that will actually work. Does the USB port from the camera connection kit actually function as a "real" USB port?

When the iPad 1 and camera kit first came out folks discovered that the USB port was usable for a number of "secret" devices from keyboards to speakers. With the 4.2 iOS update, Apple reduced the power available with the camera kit and folks report that it barely allows transfer of photos from attached cameras now.

My iPad camera connector kit is not importing all the photos onto my iPad, with some pics it's, placing an exclamation mark rather than a tick, why is this happening?

I would suspect there is something going on with the SD card the iPad is not liking. Try to transfer all the photos to a computer which may be better at reading the card. Once you have verified all the photos are safely copied use your camera to format the card. This will wipe it completely and set it up again which can fix any formatting issue the card may have. If you see this issue again I would not trust it and get a new card.
