Camera Doesn't Mount, But Seen In System Profiler

I can see in my system profiler that the camera is being recognized through the port, but its not being recognized by Image Capture.
Any ideas on what to do?
Also, my DVD-Rs arent mounting on my desktop either.
Lotsa whirling and grunting, but nothing.
Two questions, hope someone can help me out.
Thanks
Nat

as a guess, if optical drive is not working, it could be messing up logic board functions.

  • Optura 20 and iMovie 10.0.6---camera doesn't mount

My daughter recorded a video for her class and needs to edit it. I have used my Optura 20 and successfully transferred video to the iMac but not in the last few years.
Currently running Yosemite and iMovie 10.0.6 on a mid-2011 iMac.
When I plug the camera directly into the firewire port, iMovie does not see it. When I go to "system information" and look at the Firewire bus, I see the warning "Unable to list FireWire devices." When I remove the camera and plug in my firewire HD, it appears quite nicely in System information; when I plug the camera into the drive to "daisy-chain" the system info reverts to "unable to list" and the hard drive disappears from my desktop.
This is using the (only) Firewire cable I have for the camera, which is 9 pin to 3 pin.
I went to my ancient mac mini (running OS 10.4) but that ancient beast has only a 6 pin outlet on the back.
Before I run out and try to find a 6--->3 cable, does anyone have any insight? Does this camera never work on a modern mac with a modern OS? Is the problem I am having likely to also show up on the Ancient Mini? My fallback position is to go to a camera store and have the miniDV converted to a digital file (and I would like to do this the old-fashioned way if at all possible).
    Any thoughts?

    Hi
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
Is the dip-switches set right ?
Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    Try resetting it
    Connections
Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones after material is imported and edited.
GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    White MacBooks - don't
    MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
if Thunderbolt - use a Thunderbolt to FireWire adaptor.
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Screen Saver - OFF
    Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Kodak camera doesn't mount

    Hey all,
I have a Kodak DC3400 digital camera (read: really old!) that works fine with iPhoto and Image Capture. I have never installed the Kodak software that came with the camera because I haven't needed to, and it's SO old.
I'm trying to export pictures that were taken by the camera back to the flash card it has. BUT, the camera does not show up in the desktop as a drive, nor in my Disk Utility. System Profiler recognizes the camera fine in the USB drive. But I have no access to the card itself.
I read that Kodaks don't mount as an external drive in the Finder, but it hasn't been a problem for most people because they're importing, and just rely on iPhoto. Well, I'm trying to export.
I want to just drag and drop pictures back to the camera to the flash card to get them printed off at a Costco. Is there any way to do this in OSX/iPhoto/Disk Utility without installing a risky old Kodak program?

I have the same problem as Heather. Camera is a Canon Powershot S410. I want to be able to upload photos from iPhoto back to the camera from time to time, but there is no place I see it mounted, including Home or the desktop. The product recommended in the previous post only works for cameras that mount. I did a search but could only find some vague suggestions about looking though the literature that came with the camera. Any other suggestions, anybody? Thanks!

  • USB pen drive mounts not seen in system.log. Why?

Any idea why USB pen drive mounts are not loogged in system.log? A WD Paasport drive mount shows up in system.log. Any idea why this is the case and how it can tracked/logged?
It would be nice to have a record of any externals that are being mounted on an OS X client by a user.

Ok, that's it. I read a few posts in the "...SuperDrive won't accept my CD.." section. and it seems some people are just swapping optical drives like mad, ready to accept that the kit is crap, and "...oh, well, I sure hope this one works better...".
But one guy had the brains to have a look inside. Turns out dust had accumulated in the drive and on the connectors, and when he cleaned them, and unplugged and replugged them, it worked fine. So that's what I did. Took it out and put it back in. Amazing the stuff I cleared out! I also un- and re-plugged the power cable and the data ribbon at the mutha board and bingo!. We have disk, and I can breathe again.
Recommend to others they pretend they've bought a new drive, do a remove and reinstall and be very fastidious. You may not need a new one after all. I just love it that stuff can still be FIXED!
Thanks to Lou and all of you who share your experiences. It's like my brain is suddenly soooo huge...

  • VTR not seen by FCP - seen by System Profiler

I'm sure this HAS TO BE some silly setting but it's driving me crazy!
FCP doesn't recognize the VTR (camera) when I'm trying to capture - but I've captured hundreds of times before. I've tried every preference setting I can think of but to no avail.
System profiler sees the VTR (Sony HVR-M10E) no problem.
I get exactly the same result on my G5 2.0 Dual (also running FCP 5.0.4) and the same result on both computers when using my Sony HVR-Z1.

Upgrade Quicktime recently? Even if not, try this:
#30 - Deck recognition after Tiger Upgrade:
    Shane's Stock Answer #30:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1063600&#1063600
The credit for this goes to Bob Sidebotham:
I was just walked through a repair procedure by an Apple Care person, and it fixed my camera recognition problems (I have a Canon XL1 and sometime after installing Tiger, then 10.4.1, various patches (including Quicktime 7.1) and the latest Desktop Video patch, I've been unable to use the camera with Final Cut Express, and attempts to capture would result in a FCE crash).
The workaround is to download Quicktime manually, after removing the "receipts" which indicate that it is loaded. Specifically, I was told to do the following:
    1. Navigate to Library -> Receipts on your main drive (not from your personal folder).
    2. Remove all files of the form QuickTime*.pkg, where "*" is a version number. E.g. QuickTime600.pkg, QuickTime650.pkg, Quicktime700.pkg and QuickTime701.pkg. This simply tells your system that those packages are not installed.
    3. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/downloads and click on the "download Quicktime" link. DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE UTILITY. Download QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg. Double click this file (probably on your desktop) and then invoke the installer by double clicking QuickTime701.pkg.
    4. After your computer reboots, you should be able to restart FCP and see your camera.

  • How can I access an unsupported usb device that's seen by system profiler

is there a way to access an unsupported usb device? my parents bought my daughter a cheap and easy to use digital camera and I am looking for a way to access the photos. the camera's manual mentions that there is no mac driver and there are no plans to develop one. I plug it in anyways in the event the system / Iphoto recognizes this, But I get nothing on the desktop as in a generic disk image icon. I open system profiler and My G4 knows the camera is plugged in. If this interface between the two is recognized how can I access the camera?
does a driver have to be written to allow access? I saw a usb dev kit on version tracker but I have no clue as to how to write a driver. I could get a flash card reader but I was hoping that there may be some back door or an app somewhere to allow me to get the photos off the camera.
    thanks!!!

    Hi, Israel.
You wrote: " I plug it in anyways in the event the system / Iphoto recognizes this"See if Image Capture recognizes the camera. Launch Image Capture, which is in the Macintosh HD > Applications folder.
Otherwise, you're probably going to have to go the route of using a card reader. While the connection may be USB, they may be using some non-standard implementation that requires a driver.
Writing drivers is not something you'd want to even attempt since you didn't create the hardware!
    Good luck!

  • New 1GB Chip not seen in System Profiler

    Hello all.
A friend of mine just recently installed a new 1GB RAM chip into his PowerBook G4 1Ghz. According to system profiler he has 256MB installed in one slot and the other was empty. So he went to install the new one and removed a 256 MB chip from the bottom panel and inserted the new 1GB chip. After booting back up it still says 256MB and the other slot is empty.
    Here is what we see:
    SODIMM0/J25LOWER:
    Size: 256 MB
    Type: DDR SDRAM
    Speed:PC2700U-25330
    SODIMM1/J25UPPER:
    Size: Empty
    Type: Empty
    Speed:Empty
So here's the ultimate question. If the LowerDIMM is the one under the laptop, why does it still say 256MB.
Also, is there a memory slot under the keyboard on this model? I am unfamiliar with it and all the sites I've seen cover this bottom slot.
Thanks to all who read, research and/or reply.
    -Phantom27

Hi, phantom. If I understand your post correctly, there has never been any RAM in the slot that System Profiler calls the upper one, so that slot should appear empty. If a 1GB module in the lower slot is read as a 256MB module, it probably isn't the right RAM for the Powerbook. Aluminum PBs are notoriously choosy about RAM: it really has to be right. Dependable brands are Samsung, Hynix, Crucial, and the higher-priced Kingston line. Kingston's "Value RAM" line generally doesn't work. If you use Crucial's online RAM selector to choose the right RAM for your model, Crucial will guarantee that it's compatible and functional. No matter what RAM you buy or whom you buy it from, always be sure to get a lifetime warranty of serviceability and compatibility with your Powerbook and an assurance that there will be no "restocking fee" or other ripoff charges if you find that it doesn't work.
In short, using cheap no-name RAM in an Albook usually doesn't work, and is more trouble than the small cost saving is worth.

  • Won't appear on desktop/iTunes, but shows in System Profiler as connected

Hope someone can help... I've been through all the steps. My Nano is connected, charging etc. But I've tried with two computers and although it shows up in the System Profiler as connected to my USB port, it will not show up on the desktop or in iTunes. I've tried resetting. The cable and ports are obviously fine because it IS connected. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thank you!

OK. For the record, the iPod is playing fine. I listened to it for over an hour yesterday. Still not being recognized by iTunes on any of my 3 computers, or showing up on the desktop. But system profiler shows it connected, and today I went to Disk Utility. This is what happened:

So does anyone know what this means? It seems to me that I now have an iPod which will be fine for listening to the music already on it, but I won't be able to add or change anything on it. Which means I have to spring for another one. I only bought this one (refurbished, now I think I know why...) in 1/07.

  • G$ FW800 stock optical drive not seen in System Profile - is it daid?

I added a USB PCI card (2.0) to my FW and shifted some files (Migration Assistant) to my FW by Firewire from an eMac and then I wanted to run Diskwarrior to sort it all out. My CDW/DVDR wouldn't open, either with the eject key or through Toast. Not recognized in Toast. Not recognized in System Profile either. I reset the PMU (cause I can), then tried to boot the DW CD from a Firewire LaCie drive. No good. I finally got the CD to start the FW by using "alt" on startup and waiting for it to find DW but after running all the tests, my drive still seems to be dead. Any more resets or something I can try?
Also, I took the card out and tried again but no good. Are the circuits for the drive and PCI somehow related? Did I cook a controller or something?
Guys, what's the scoop? or is it poop?

  • IPhone 3G won't show up in iTunes but does in System Profiler

So early today, when I was clicking check for updates every half hour like everyone else waiting for 3.0 to go live I had this crop up. I had quit iTunes, unplugged the iPhone (2.2.1) and when I plugged it in.. nothing.. didn't even get the chirp from the iPhone showing it was charging, it won't auto-launch iTunes and if Itunes is open it won't chow up.
    - Tried a original iPhone cord and same thing,
    - used a Apple wall charger and the phone chirped and showed it was charging
    - restarted the Mac Pro and the iPhone, still nothing
    - took the original cord and phone (still v2.2.1) to a iMac in another room and it worked perfectly.
    - used the iMac to update to iPhone 3.0 software
    - went back to the Mac Pro and it charges now, shows up in System Profiler, nothing else
Latest version of all the software, including 2.2.1 (and then 3.0) on the iPhone. All the updates on the Mac Pro.
Hints short of nuking my iTunes completely (and all my rankings, etc in my music)?

Oh, one more thing, I have reset PRAM if that matters.

  • Replaced Superdrive Not Seen in System Profiler 10.5.1

I just noticed my replaced Superdrive ( Pioneer DVR-111D [Beige Bezel] 'SuperDrive' 16X DVD w/DL + CDRW Burner) does not show in System Profiler under 10.5.1. It did after replacement after using Patch Burn under 10.4.0. Now Patch Burn says that it is unnecessary under 10.5 (Leopard). Also, there is no burn button available with iTunes (08). I don't want to waste a DVD to experiment, so does anyone happen to know anything about this (Mr Totes or any of the resident SD specialists?). Any and all comments would be appreciated.

  • Exernal drive won't mount but seen in disk utility

2011 Macbook Pro 2.3Ghz 8Gb on OSX 10.7.2 connected Maxtor One Touch 4 750Ghz firewire drive. Has been working perfectly for 3 years.
I'm runnign Pro Tools 9. I had some issues with IK Multimedia plug-ins being de-authorized earlier today. IK suggested repairing disk permissions (which I did). Seemed to be OK, but a few hours later when I booted up the MBP it no longer recognises the drive. The drive is booting up & I've swapped out the cables, so I can rule them out.
The drive was called "PT drive". It had 3 partitions: "Rough bounces", "Samples & loops" and "PT Session drive". Now, it doesn't appear on the desktop and Pro Tools can't see it.
However, disk utility sees the drive as "750Gb Maxtor" with 3 partions: "disk1s1", "disk 1s2" and "disk1s3". All of the disk utility options are greyed out (Verify disk permissons, repair disk permissions, verify disk and reair disk) so I can't do anything with them. When I try to eject the disk, I get an error message saying the drive can;t be ejected because applications are in use. I don;t have anything running in the background.
I don't have a backup for this drive, so really need to get the problem sorted urgently. Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Re-booted everything up again this morning & the extral drive has appreared again. Very strange. I've created a back up drive in case I have similar probs in the future. A lucky escape!

  • External hard drive not seen in disk utility but can be seen in system profiler

    HI
i have a 500gb western digital my passport, its been working fine, since i have used it on a windows machine, i can no longer get it to be recognised in finder. The light is flashing on the side and i can see it under USB in sytem profiler. I cant see it in disk utility. i cant format as it has photos etc loaded
    cheers

An update for anyone who can help me:
I have tried the external hard drive in other computers (mac and windows), each time I get the same problem above.
I have removed the HD from the enclosure and purchased a docking station for it (3.5" SATA). When I plug it in to the laptop it disconnects itself straight away before it is visible. With the windows computers it installs the drivers and says that the device is ready to use, then disconnects before it shows up.
As the HD is not visible there is no option to re-format or anything.
This is very frustrating as I was using the HD with no issues and it randomly disconnected and I have not been able to access since.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • MBP built-in iSight not working but seen in Software Profile

I hope I am not repeating, but I have read all discussions on iSight, and my problem does not seem to be addressed. My iSight is not recognized as being present by any program, iChat, PhotoBooth, iMovie, etc. However, it IS present in the software profiler on the USB Bus. No one else seems to have had this particular scenario in these discussions and the Apple troubleshooting guide does not say what to do if that is the case. Anyway, I did go through all the steps. It is not application or user specific (exists with all users), and resetting the SMC and PRAM had no effect. I also did the hardware test from the boot CD (no problems found) and repaired the permissions and the disk while booted from the boot CD, but nothing has fixed it. It certainly seems to be a software problem, since Software Profiler sees it, but I don't even have any idea what to reinstall or reset. Thanks for any help.

Hi everyone, I took my macbook to the Genius Bar in Perimeter, Atlanta, GA. And Ronnie, the genius attending to me tried everything that has been said on this forum and others to fix the problem. He tried creating a new account, resetting the PRAM, SMC but with no success. When he booted my machine with the Mac OS on his external drive, he was able to access the camera well and good. He consulted other geniuses then and the only solution left was to re-install the OS. He did that and it started to work. I had to reinstall some of the softwares like Adobe CS3, iLife 08, iWorks 08, Parallels, but I got my iSight back. Took about 2 hours with this exercise and now it seems it was worth the effort.
The guys at Apple Support Genius Bar are REALLY very helpful and going to them was an extremely pleasurable experience. I think now i will buy more apple products.

  • SATA HD not recognized in system profiler

Hi, I have just fitted a Sonnet SATA controller card along with a Seagate 500GB harddrive.
Disk Utility recognizes the disk and it mounts.
In System Profiler>PCI Cards the SATA card is recognized but not the Drive is not seen in System Profiler>S-ATA Devices.
    Why is this?

Drives connected to PCI controller cards apparently don't show up in Panther's or Tiger's ASP, so that's not an actual problem. Another G4 owner who recently added a Sonnet SATA card posted the same question here.
