Camera doesn't show up in Ichat

I am using an isight to sucessfully ichat with my Dad. We did one way video just fine. Now he wants to do video on his end. He has a firewire capable Optura camcorder that Ichat doesn't recognize at all.
I had him reboot, but nothing changed in ichat. He doesn't have the black video another user describes, ichat simply acts as if no camera is attached.
Help. Please
He's doing this on a blue and white tower.

Yes, the G3 900 Mhz will work (assuming it too is firewire enabled).
But I have a question regarding your own mac system. I've read this entire thread and I suspect you have something very unusual going on in either your cable/connection, the computer, or perhaps the camcorder itself if you indeed get iphoto to launch after plugging in a Firewire cable.
When i plug in a FW web cam, it will launch ichatav3 by default. However, if I plug in a Sony three chip Minidv TRV900, it awaits my instructions. Normally i use FCP or iMovie with this device. But under ichatav i can also select the minidv camera as a primary video/camera source. You should be able to get these options as well unless there is something else going on in your connection, camera or system. You'll have to narrow it down and tell us.
Are you 100% certain you are using a functional 4-6 pin Firewire cable and connection and not a Usb2 connection or cable? Also please verify that these are the specs for your camera:

  • Video invitation doesn't show up in iChat

On my iMac G4 flat panel running OS X 10.4.11, iChat doesn't show an incoming video chat invitation.  This occurs on AIM account and Bonjour.  Connection Doctor shows Por Restricted.  However there are no ports restricted on my DSL Q100 modem, and I do not have the OS X 104.11 firewall enabled.
When I place a video chat to my MacBook Pro (Mavericks) I get a video invitation just fine.

The camera isn't built into the iMac.  I added the Logitech C270 HD Webcam a few days ago.

The firewall on the DSL modem is off as is the Mac OS X firewall on the iMac G4.  If I start a video call from the iMac G4 to my MacBook Pro (Using AIM to AIM accounts) the invitation shows up on the MacBook Pro.  This indicates to me that it isn't a port issue.
I tried turning on the Mac OS X firewall on the iMac G4 and adding the ports under Other.  It made no difference.

  • Updated iPhone to 4.2.1 but camera doesn't show up in text

Hi! So I broke my iphone and got a new one at the store and updated it at home to the newest update because my camera wouldn't show up in my texting bar. I updated the phone and it still isn't showing up. Please help! Thanks

The usual trouble solving steps are reset - restore - restore as new
You can also try to reset all settings
If none of that works it will be a trip to your local Apple store

  • Camera doesn't show up in iPhoto after upgrade to 10.6 Snow Leopard

When I was running 10.5 Leopard, I would connect my camera to my computer and iPhoto would pop up and ask me to import. The camera would be listed in under Devices. After upgrading my OS to 10.6 Snow Leopard, iPhoto no longer recognizes my camera. I am able to import from the camera just fine using the Image Capture app, and the camera shows up in the System Profiler under USB, so the system does seem to detect and recognize the camera, it's just that iPhoto is ignoring it. iPhoto does recognize my iPhone and list it under Devices, but not my camera.
Has anyone else had similar problems with iPhoto after upgrading to Snow Leopard? Does anyone know how to fix this so iPhoto will recognize the camera?
My camera is a Casio Exilim EX-S500

No one seems to like my post enough to reply, but I've found two more-recent questions with responses that were very similar.
    See

Sadly, neither of these posts provide any answers (as of 9/4/09). It seems there's a problem with some cameras and iPhoto and Snow Leopard. The only helpful advice was to use a USB card reader which doesn't make sense in my case since the EX-S500 has it's own dock specifically for transferring pictures. Oh well, I guess I'll wait and see if Apple fixes this in 10.6.1.

  • Digital camera doesn't show up in Finder

why does my digial camera not show up in Finder?  (camera is Nikon D7000)
there are situtions when you don't want to download photos, sometimes I'm just doing tests, and want to see photos in the camera instead of downloading them first.. ( at any rate this should be my choice to make, not Apple's....;-)
and: I want to see the camera in the FINDER (not iPhoto or any other program where you have to "import" the photos.. I don't like those programs and never use them..)
it doesn't even show up in Adobe Bridge, for pete's sake.. this is ABSURD..
sorry, but on the pc you see it right away in Windows Explorer....    no reason whatsoever why the mac shouldn't do this also...

I changed setting you mention (although I thought that applied strictly to what appears in DESKTOP, not all Finder windows/folders...)   made no difference..  just connected camera, the mac still won't read it...
I do know about iPhoto, iMovie, i-whatever...  I still would like to see camera in FINDER (or at the very least in Adobe Bridge.. )  what happens is simply that Apple has decided you can only download/see photos in the camera ONLY with APPLE software.. this ***** BIG TIME...   there's no good reason at all why Apple would do a ****** thing like this....  how users pull/view photos from a camera should be the USER'S choice, not Apple's...  (in general I don't like at all programs you have to "import" photos from, you don't get a choice as to where the photos are stored in yr HD..  I have a very large amount of photos, and have a specific organizing system, specif. way of naming the folders, etc.. and I need to choose exactly where the photos are stored.. )
(to responder who said it's a Nikon issue:  so Nikon decided to design their cameras so you can see photos in Windows Explorer in Windows machines, but they deliberately decided they didn't want them showing up in Finder windows on the mac?  find this a bit hard to believe..   am curious now, so will consult with Nikon, but I do find it hard to believe this is a Nikon decision...)
    thank you...

  • Camera Doesn't Show Up in iPhoto

    OS 10.6.7
    Canon G11
I never had any problem with iPhoto recognizing the camera before.
I would connect it with the USB cable, the icon would show on the Left side panel and the Import button would show, allowing me to get the photos from the camera into iPhoto.
Now all of a sudden - nothing and I'm sure that it's not the cable that's faulty.
Any ideas as to why, out of the blue, iPhoto does not recognize the camera?
I've got a lot of photos trapped in the G11 !
         Thanks
         John

    Possibilities:
    Damaged Cable
    Damaged port on the Computer
    Damaged port on the Camera
    Damaged Directory on the Card
    Software on the Mac
    Software on the Camera
You can eliminate many of the possibilities simply by trying the camera in another computer. If it works there, then we know the issue is with your Mac, if not, then we can guess the camera.
Or, use USB Card reader - if it fails there, we can suspect the camera or the card etc.
Have you tried Image Capture (in your Applications Folder)?

  • New 24" imac 2.8ghz built-in camera doesn't work

the built-in camera doesn't show up in ichat or photo booth. "there is no camera attached to this computer" error in ichat...
plugging in an external iSight does work.
i've repaired permissions, rebooted, run fsck,
tried to run the 10.4.10 combo intel updater but the one available online won't let you install it on this system. it comes with 10.4.10 installed.
powered down and unplugged everything for 30 seconds, the plugged everything back in and rebooted.
i've reinstalled the os from the included dvds... "archive and install"
all software updates are installed, including "iMac Software Update 1.0"
any other ideas other than send it back?

  • Canon mini Disk camera doesn't work if external drive connected

A long story.      Anyway, I have a MacPro Intel Dual Core 266 Ghz with 5 Gbs RAM,  4 internal hard drives HD1~HD4 (HD1 OSX 250 and three 500Gb) and two external HD5 (two partitions~HD5 & Time Machine Backups) and HD6 (1 Tb each).
I've been using a Canon mini DV video camera FV-M10 (Firewire 400) for live video (Skype/iChat) and also for importing video into Final Cut Express, After Effects or iMovie up until a few days ago.  Both "live" video and from the recorded mini cassette tape.  Then all of a sudden not one of the software recognized my camera anymore.  I tried both Firewire 800/400 and USB2 connections using a few different cables. In Skype...(sometimes) it automatically shows the name FV-M10 in the camera slot, but the screen is black.  No, I checked if I left the cover on.  I checked my Sony WX-5 digital camera and see if that is recognized.  Yes, both pics and AVCHD videos are seen using the USB connection.
    The problem started like this.
I was downloading a file.  Had to work for an hour and when I came back upstairs.  I noticed that the screen was frozen.   So, I shut the Mac down.  And when I started it again, well nothing happened except for a grey screen.  A half~sized cursor was stuck up in the top left.  But, my mouse also had a cursor which was movable.
It wouldn't even recognize the OSX Install Disk holding down "C" or "Option".  Only starting with "Shift" held down, "Safe Boot"  could I use the basics like Mail, Safari, Firefox.   NO sound and no video. Tried a few times as well as cleaned my OSX HD1 hard drive and re-installed from "Safe Boot" mode".   So, I had it sent into Apple Tokyo for repairs.   Apple put in a new board.     Great!      I came it back in two days.   I cleaned the OSX hard drive and re-installed Mac OSX with the up-dates as well and got some of my main backed up stuff Mail, bookmarks, address book etc.   It started fine.     But, when I went to use Skype, iChat, iMovie or Final Cut Express  they still couldn't recognize my camera.  I had been using the Canon FV M10 camera for a few years with both external hard drives on.  There were never any problems until just before I sent it into the shop.
There was only one way to use my camera.  Un-Plug the external HD6.  Then the camera functions fine.  but remember I had been using this camera with both HD's for around two years without any problems.
Notes on symptoms:  and what actions I took.
Front connections: FW400 Canon camera.  FW800 (Tried connecting HD6)
    Rear Connections: USB2 1) MidiMan 2 x2   2) mouse  3) Canon Printer
                                   FW400 HD5  FW800 (tried HD6)
    With HD6 Connected.
iMovie 11 9.02 : Start iMovie  O.K.  No camera on.   Turned camera "on" then "No Camera Connected" notice came up.   (did this a few times)   Turned camera off.   Quit iMovie.
2nd start:  Camera On.   iMovie freezes.   Spinning Colored beach ball.   I then Force Quit Option-Apple-ESC
iMovie shows (not responding)  When I turn off the camera.  (not responding) disappears and iMovie is working again.  But, "No Camera Connected" shows again.  Quit!
    Un-Plugged (Ejected) HD6.
When I un-plugged HD6,    (tried both the front and rear connections).   iMovie still on.
"No Camera Connected"  I Quit iMovie.
Re-start iMovie:  Camera on… Live video and record miniDV tape can both be seen.
Skype:  Both live video and mini DV tape recording even plays back over Skype screen.
    iChat (same as Skype) O.K.
Since Apple replaced the board 661-3932 Card Video, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT which cost just about $X00.00  (¥XX,000).   I assume that they don't also check all the connections etc. I mean from the connector to the video board.
The call to Apple Tokyo today.
Just talked to Apple (Mac) Tokyo about my computer problem.  Seems like they're trying to squeeze their way of more repairs by saying I have a hard drive configuration problem.   But it doesn't seem like that!   I worked with it 2~3 hours today...and  here is the basic problem.
I've used the Canon FV M10 mini DV camera with Skype, iChat, iMovie and FCEx for few  years  (HD6) is over a year old-the most recent add on) with no problem.    With both external 1Tb hard drives.  And Apple said that it's a 3-party problem.  (different makers etc.)  But, it's NOT!     Yes, they put in a new board.   But, I'd say the problem is from the connection (where I plug the cable into the Mac)  to the board.
When I connect HD6 (1Tb ext hard drive).   FW 800 (either back or front connection) the video camera doesn't work in  Skype, iChat, iMovie, or Final Cut Express.     If I eject and Un-Plug HD6  all of them work fine.  The camera "live" or the camera playing back the mini DV tape video.
Wouldn't this be a problem between the connections (front & back) to the new video board?  Or does anyone have an answer.   Apple seems to have said, "We can't help you".   Please someone help!  thanks

+My mini isn't responding to startup commands like "C" or "D" from the keyboard.+
You'll need a wired usb keyboard for these commands to work -- and the Apple Aluminum keyboard won't work either.
But just about any PC usb keyboard will work. Alt maps to Option and Win-key to CMD.

  • My camera doesn't appear in "Get Photos from" box

My camera quit showing up in the "Get Photos from:" box. Any ideas how to fix this? I have to  boot up PhotoShop Album Starter. Then the Downloader icon appears in the task bar. I click on Launch from there, or select Get Photos from the Tool bar, but my camera doesn't show up in the options anymore. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Philip

Did you try clicking the duplicate file button present in the downloader. If No, then click it you'll find your pics. Duplicate file button is present on top bar of downloader. It's the fourth button in front of 'Show' text. Downloader (APD) does not show the files that have already been imported in Photoshop Album Starter Edition.
You can find your pics if you launch Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition from your program menus.
Please let me know if it is helpful.

  • Camera Roll on iphone 4S doesn't show up on ipad2

Camera Roll on iphone 4S doesn't show up on ipad2, I have icloud on on both devices, in settings have icloud sharing turned on. Ther is no sync command. Oh, do I have to go through itunes to accomplish this? I thought that if it was turned on on both devices, any photo on one would automatically be available on the other and vice versa. What am I missing?

The camera roll doesnt sync with anything.
The camera roll is where the devices pictures are store when you use the camera.
Your options are to use iPhoto (if you are Mac based) to import the pictures on your computer or enable Photostream so that new pictures added to the camera roll are also copied up to the 'cloud'.

  • ISight works fine in iChat but doesn't show up in Yahoo Messenger nor Skype

Hello, I was given an iSight webcam that works fine in iChat, but doesn't show up in Yahoo Messenger nor Skype, which are the IM programs I use…
I search on the Apple Support site a driver to download, but there is only an updater (iSight Updater 1.0.3) which doesn't run on Tiger... Any help please ?? Thx

You probably don't need it, but the Tiger "iSight Updater" is located in the \System\Library\CoreServices\iSight Updaters\iSight Updater folder.
(You must look manually because SpotLight does not find it.)
Double click the "iSight Updater" there to run the Firmware update manually.

  • Camera Adapter Kit-Doesn't Show Videos

I've been using my camera adapter kit to put photos from my camera, into my iPad but it doesn't show the videos I've recorded. I tried deleting all the pics from my camera and just leaving the one video I want to transfer but the iPad shows:"No photos to import"
I'm using a Sony digital camera that records video in MPEG-4 format. Any suggestions? (I transfered the video to my Dell laptop, no problem)

From the error message you are getting there is a DCIM folder on the storage media. Therefore, two possible problems. One is that specific format of the MPEG-4 videos is not compatible with the iPad. There are many variations in MPEG-4 file formats and the iPad will not play all of them. The other is that the video file is not in the DCIM folder.
When you look at the file structure of the storage media with your computer where is the video file located? If you take the video file off the camera and into your computer and then add the video to your iPad via syncing does your iPad play it?
