Camera Hard Drive computer via FW400

is it bad to run my camera through my firewire hardrive (or other firewire device with second port) to my computer? what probems will i run into? will playback to camera be effected? will capturing be effected?

Try it and find out. If you do run into difficulties, you'll need a firewire card (pci for powermac / pcmcia for powerbooks) to create a second bus for the camera.

I cannot seem to load raw images into LR 2.5.  I've been using this for years.  I always load from memory card, but it gives me an unknown error message.  I tried to load from camera, hard drive, & external drive and still will not work.  I checked import menu and nothing has changed.  I loaded the photos onto my tablet and images are fine, so do not feel it is the memory card.  Any thoughts?

The error message probably said "unsupported or damaged"
The T3 requires Lightroom 3.4.1 or later. You can either upgrade to a more current version of Lightroom (version 5.6 is the most recent) or you can use the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert the RAWs to DNG, which should import into Lightroom properly.

  • Will Time Machine work with an external hard drive connected (via usb) to Airport Extreme?

Will Time Machine work with an external hard drive connected (via usb) to Airport Extreme?

Sorry, but this article is about 4 years old, and was printed based on preliminary information at the time.
The bottom line here is that Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme.
If it works for you, great.
You might want to review the Apple Support documents below, which are far more recent than the article you reference:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038
    It is supported.....
This is NOT correct. Please do not post false information on the forums.

  • Can i access hard drive wirelessly via time capsule?

I have a macbook pro with a full hard drive, a time capsule and an external hard drive.
I want to be able to access my files wirelessly and backup regularly.
Is the best option to use my external hard drive as my new hard drive, with automatic backup to the time capsule?
If I leave the external hard drive connected by usb to the time capsule will this mean I can wirelessly access them?
And finally what is the best way to move my files from my macbook pro to the external hard drive?

As I understand it.. and one of the other eggs spurts here may correct me. There are issues doing this.
An external drive plugged into TC can be used to store your files, but will not be backed up. (Not by Time Machine at least) And extremely inefficiently if you create a directory on the TC drive because it will be copied back to the computer and then onto the TC again. The external drive would have to be plugged directly into the computer for it to include the files in the backup.
So you have some choices. Each with a caveat.
    1. Create a directory on the TC and store your files there. That is the best way for speed. Although a USB drive access is probably no worse by wireless. It will not get backed up though. At least not via TM, you can manually do the backup. And should do so if the TC becomes the only place the files are stored.
    2. Plug the external hdd into the computer directly.. that is messy and obviously not what you want but the files are then included in the backup. It is considerably faster though.
    3. Buy a larger hdd for the MBP.

  • External hard drive networked via AirPort Extreme gives "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" roughly every two days

My lab has about 10 Mac computers.  We all access a central hard drive by the way of wifi provided by AirPort.  It's just a regular external hard drive (Seagate Desktop Drive) that I turned into our central storage space by plugging it into AirPort (USB).  It works pretty well.  We seem to be fine with viewing the file directories, opening files, saving, deleting etc., for a day or two.  But then after a day or two, when when trying to modify files or move new files onto the central hard drive, we get the error message: "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)"
Any suggestions as to what may be causing this problem?
All of the computers are 2011 iMacs & MacPros.  The AirPort is 802.11n WiFi.  The hard drive is a Seagate USB 3.0 Desktop Drive.
    Thank you for your insight/suggestions.

Thanks for your reply.  I agree about the communication issue. Let me explain my setup and what I am trying to do and perhaps you can answer my questions or make suggestions.
I have a MAC Mini with a Sony TV for the video monitor.  The  Mac Mini is hard wired to the AE (Airport Extreme).  The AE has a 2 TB HD hooked up to the USB Port.  I have a 17" Mac Book Pro on the WIFI Network.
I am trying to use the MAc Mini as a "Media Server" of sorts.  Once I get iTunes running the way I plan I am goign to hook up my Apple TV (2nd Generation) to my television downstairs.
What I am trying to accomplish is have iTunes on all my computers look to the External HD on the AE for the files.  This is why I am having my (-50 errors).
So far I have noticed that if I go and try to download from iTunes purchased videos that are not ont he computer (to the external HD) it will also occassionaly give me teh -50 error.
Is there a way to change where the files go when I download them?  Say I want to download videos to the computer but not to the external HD?  However I would want to still be able to move them to the External HD.

  • External Hard Drive Connected via Time Capsule USB

I've saved all my iMovie files on an external hard drive originally connected to my iMac via a USB port. Now, I'm connecting the same hard drive to the USB port on my Time Capsule but iMovie can't access the files. The hard drive shows up in iMovie but has a yellow triangle with a "!" on it? What is my problem here?

You can probably fix this by creating a symbolic link to your time machine-attached drive. I have never done this myself, so you may want to search the iMovie 08 forum for Time Machine and//or Symbolic Link.
The search function is on the right just above your name.

  • How to back up iTunes Library on external hard drive & computer, after purchasing new music?

I keep my iTunes library on my computer's hard drive and also backed up on an external hard drive. I have added more music to my library since my previous back up, and I want to back up the new music to my external drive.
What's the best way to do this?

The first time I backed up my iTunes on an external drive, it took a 1 hour +. Do I basically need to start over on my external hard drive? Or is there an easier/faster way?
Yes there is a faster way.
Check this out -> Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy
Don't change the library location or hold Option to update the backup on the external.

  • Importing video from camera hard drive

How do I import the video from my video camera's hard drive? imovie isn't recognizing the file type. My camera doesn't have any software with it. Do I need to download a certain type of software?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

What with all the new vid cameras going to a HD
solution (though the other solutions stay around for
years and years) coupled with MPEG2, I can't imagine
that Apple wouldn't want to make importing the files
a bit easier to import into iMovie.
Thats because the good HD cameras are equipped with Firewire for reasons of economics .....
Neither HD cameras or straight to DVD machines will give you the quality you get with miniDV tapes. The reason is storage capacity - the cheaper camera's these days sacrifice quality for ease of watching. They don't have to be seen on a large screens and you can't edit them.
Stick to miniDV or even move up to HD video.
Think of the size of an iPod Nano - thats 8Gb storage MAX and so has only half the capacity of a DV tape. Double it to 16Gb and thats just over an hour of DV storage - equivalent to one miniDV tape. And it would cost $600-ish vs $5 for a tape.
Economically, a miniDV format camea is very cost effective for a set quality
I should ad that Sony also are known for producing technology thats brilliant but incompatible with many other suppliers in an attempt to lock in purchasers.

  • Finder freezes when attempting to access a "shared" external hard drive (wireless via Airport Extreme)

Finder freezes.   As soon as I click onto my "shared" external hard drive (3TB WD - wireless via Airport Extreme), finder immediately freezes / eternally spinning beach ball (until I restart finder).  Can still access wirelessly on another Mac (not on Yosemite).
    Please help!

Ok - for a while there, the hard drive would not come up on the desktop - but now on a re-boot of the compter, or if I disconnect the hard drive and re-connect it, a message comes up with three buttons which say:
    Initialize
    Ignore
    Eject
Sound like the hard drive has died?

  • External Hard Drive Connected via PCMCIA

I am going to upgrade the hard drive on my laptop. One step involves transferring the info from my present IDE hard drive to the upgrade IDE hardrive. The upgrade IDE hard drive will be in a hard drive adaptor that is connected via a PCMCIA slot.
I presume (and certainly hope) there will be no drama, with the kernel recognizing the external hard drive as /dev/hdX, given all of the relevant PCMCIA features are enabled.
If somone has done this and encountered any gotchas, I would appreciate the intel.
    Regards, Rick

Perhaps no one replied to the original post because the answer is embarassingly simple. All one needs is the device driver ide-cs, which is not present in the package kernel-scsi. The upgrade hard drive becomes /dev/hde.
The software aspects turned out to be a bit more challenging, but that is the subject of another post.

  • USB Hard Drives Mount via AEBS but are Empty/Blank

I just came home with a new AIrport Extreme Base Station, bought so I could access my USB hard drives anywhere in the house. Before setting out this morning I read on the AEBS product page that you could connect multiple drives or printers using a USB hub, so was quite pleased.
I got it home, plugged in the hub, connected the ethernet, and connected to the AEBS from my MacBook Pro. I configured it to share my EPSON printer and the two USB hard drives I use. They all show in the Airport Utility. Configured security, updated, and mounted my drives. And they do mount, both of them show under "shared" in Finder.
The only problem is: They are both BLANK. There are no folders or files showing on them whatsoever. I panicked and plugged them straight into my MBP, hoping the AEBS hadn't formatted them or something, but the files were there and okay. I plugged them back into the hub... And nothing.
I see lots of threads having to do with people who cannot mount their drives, but that's not my problem. They MOUNT fine, they just don't have any files on them. Can anyone help? If not, the AEBS goes back to the store.

UPDATE: I managed to gain access to my files by switching (within the AEBS settings) from user-based sharing to a simple drive password. Once I did that I was able to browse and use my USB hard drives over the airport.
However, I would like to use the account-based system, so I'm modifying my question and adding another.
    1) Why can't I see my files on USB drives connected to the AEBS when I'm using user-based security?
    2) When I change users on my MacBook Pro, the other users cannot access the drives connected to the AEBS. I've got one password set now, using drive security (and I also tried it using the AEBS password for security), but it only works on my account. On other accounts, the user is informed that the password is invalid, even though I know I'm typing it correctly.
Basically I either need to get the AEBS to share my drives, with files, using user-based security or convince it to allow other users in when I have drive or base station password security for the drives.
    Any help... Much appreciated!

  • After downloading to external hard drive, computer wont start up

the only screen I get is the apple logo then an x, and ? mark.  it keeps repeating this. computer was new to a backup on external hard drive.  Iphotos were put on external then trashed. about 3200 images.  I thought this was slowing it up. the  macbook pro  it is non functional now. aboaut a 3-4 year old computer.

Your computer is looking for a drive to boot from - find your original install disc(s) and insert disc one into your optical drive and see if you can boot from it. If needed, boot holding down the option key and you should have the opportunity to select the disc.
Good luck - you may have to reformat your internal drive.

  • G-Tech External Hard Drive - (1) Which FW400 cable? (2) Is this HD good?

    Hi,
I'd like to get my MacBook connected with an external hard drive G-Tech G-DRIVE 500GB FW400/800 Hard Drive. The specification says it comes with FW800 cable, whereas MacBook has FW400 port.
Would anyone know which cable I should get for the FW400?
    Thank you,
    Beata

    Hi Beata,
if your G-tech FW400 port similar to one that on your macbook, get the 6 pin to 6 pin firewire 40 cable.
but if the firewire port is smaller (like one at minidv camcorder), get the 6 pin to 4 pin firewire 400 cable.
    Good Luck.

  • Replaced hard drive - computer thinks it's smaller than it is

I just had my hard drive replaced by apple, and though it's supposed to be an 80 gig drive, my computer seems to be under the impression that it is around the range of 8 gigs. What's gone wrong here, and how can I fix it? I can't even re-install tiger because it thinks there's no room on the drive!

I am having the exact same problem with a 60 gig hard drive. I just recieved it from Applecare at about 10:30 this morning. Does anybody know how to fix the problem?
