"Camera in Use" message in iChat

My mom's iMac displays a message that the built-in iSight is "in use by another application" whenever it is launched. However, when she launches PhotoBooth, the green light next to the camera comes on, it works fine, and when she quits PhotoBooth, the light turns off.
The iMac is about 8 months old, and my mom lives about 200 miles away.

If the camera works with any apps, your problem is NOT the iSight.

Can't share screen using messages and ichat

when i connect i can see my buddy and he can see me, but when i attempt to share his screen i get a white box across my screen and i can see his cursor moving but that is all i see. I had him ask to share my screen, which we did and he could see my screen perfectly. He has an imac with lion and i have a macbook pro with mountain lion.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

SPAM in Messages via iChat / AIM

used Messages and iChat before that, for many a moon and never really suffered with SPAM/pop ups
yesterday I got one, and then a second pop up wanting me to click a link:
so while I went off and gathered my credit card and bank details, poised to hand them over at the ready
wondered if anyone knew why or is experiencing a breakdown in the Deflector Shield??
privacy level is set to Block Specific People (and has been for forever)

Camera in Use iChat error message

When I try to initiate an iChat video chat, I get this message:
Camera in Use
Your camera appears to be in use by another application. Please quit any other application that might be using the camera.
This was the first time I'd tried to access the webcam since I turned on the computer. The only other program that's open that access the webcam is Skype. I've also heard that when people try to initiate a video chat with me they are told that the camera is in use.
I've been using iChat for years; this problem just started happening within the last two weeks.

Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Your account > Login Items and see if Flash is listed there.
It may pay to try turning Off Flash in your Browser as a Test for a few minutes (i.e not permanently)

Have you opened Photoshop or any other Adobe app that Bridge works with? You need to do this if you've upgraded PS or just signed up for CC.

How can I chat with my MSN Messenger friends using Messages in Lion (not iChat)?

I use MSN Messenger daily to talk with friends but I would like to use Messages to chat with them. Is there a way to do this? I looked in the preferences but it only lists AIM, Google, Yahoo and Jabber. I don't use any of those ones. I only use MSN. Anybody know how, or if it's even possible?

The Messages Beta has run out.
The End Date was the 14th December 2012.
However iChat and Messages in Mountain lion can be enabled to Add MSN Buddies to a Jabber List using Transports.
These Instructions detail how you can use a third Party app (in this case Psi) to enable a Transport on a Server that uses Transports and then Add MSN Buddies to your Jabber Buddy list.
The Instructions were written some while ago and include many pictures.
The current version of Psi is newer than the pics but you can still work out what to do.
The process will only enable Text Chatting

Constantly receive error message from ichat.

I need help. I have been using Ichat for several years without ANY issue and out of nowhere it will not connect with my chat buddy. I get an error message that asks to report to apple or not. You have iChat 3 on OS 10.4.11
Error 21 is normally "Cannot Get Video from Camera" as the Message that gets written on the Video Chat Window as well.
The Log shows on a LAN IP that looks like a Campus or office or Shared Appartment Block service
From: "[email protected]" <sip:[email protected]:5060>;tag=1357582168
Other things in the log suggest this Invite all but connected.
The thing that appears to be lacking is details of receiving a PINg from the other end.
Any chance the Router you are connected to is blocking Pings now ?

ISight Camera "in use"?

I have a G5 iMac running OSX.4.8 with the built in iSight camera. When I go to open PhotoBooth I get the message "PhotoBooth cannot open because the camera is in use by another application. Close the application using the camera, then try opening PhotoBooth again." I can't find any app using the camera.
A Mac Genius suggested checking the Widgets. I did and deleted the Mirror widget, the only thing I could find that might use the camera, but still have the problem. I can't identify anything using the camera. Any ideas on this?

Thank you Patrick, you solved my problem which even stumped the Mac Genius in the store! He tried resetting the SMU and that didn't work.
On your suggestion I turned off the automatic launch at startup of Classic and it freed up the camera. After that I was able to launch Classic manually and still use PhotoBooth.

I had a similar problem and found two possible fixes
I discovered an apparent conflict between the
OS9/classic environment and iSight. If OS9 is or has
been active, I have to reboot my computer to use
iSight, otherwise I get a "in use by another
applicaton" or "no camera connected" message when I
try to use Skype/Photobooth/iChat. (haven't seen a
fix for this bug on apple's web site) I've also read
about some bugs in the newest version of skype that
may give a similar message. Again, rebooting should
fix this.
If this doesn't work, try resetting the SMU (see
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733)
to see if this fixes it.

Camera being used by another application problem

Hi there
Please help, Ive been using ichat with my Panasonic NV-GS17 digital camcorder on Panther for ages with no hassel at all, ichat just found the camera and away I went.
I recently upgraded to Tiger 10.4.6 now every time I log into ichat it says that the cameras in use by another application. Please help
I have read some other similar messages about this subject but have still had no joy. I do use Qtime pro 7.0.4 but was using this before I upgraded my system.
Its driving me mad! any ideas?

Was the camera plugged in when you did the update ?
If so unplug it for about 15 mins or so.
Do you have any Quicktimew Plug-ins you have added under Panther ?

Camera in use error after updating iphoto to ver 6

After updating to iphoto 6 the camera on my macbook pro will not work. When I try to start the application i get a message saying camera in use by another application. However there are no other applications running! Any suggestions?

iPhoto 6 does not interface with the iSight camera in your computer so I'm not sure what program you are trying to use that indicates the camera is in use.
To resolve the issue it would be helpful to know what program is generating the error message.
Basic hardware resets you can try:

If these resets do not resolve your issue please reply back with what program you are opening when you receive your error message.

Yes.
Just to be clear let me qualify that.
FaceTime can contact other devices that use FaceTime either by a iPhone Number (includes some iPads) or an Apple ID.
There is a FaceTime for Mac version so the person you contact (by Apple IDs) does not have to be on an iPhone.
As well as iPhones certain other iOS 5 devices can use FaceTime and these include iPads as already mentioned and certain version of iPod Touches.
As iChat does not work to iPhones and is an Instant Messaging app that can do Video and Audio Only chats and Screen Sharing, File Transfers, Pics-in-chats, iChat Theatre and more then the answer is also Yes.
I suspect the question was really "Can I contact other phones that can do Video using FaceTime ?" the answer to that is No.
iChat can Text chat to most client apps on Phones (Jabber or AIM for instance)
Video needs iChat (Or AIM or Trillain on a PC).

How can I change the icon for incoming messages on iChat?

I already changed the icon for the ichat app, but whenever i get a new message it reverts back to the original icon with a number on the corner. I have an icon for the alternating messages i just don't know how to change it. HELP?!

It's a long time since I changed an Icon on anything on my computer.
The icon for the App is stored in the App and there are two ways to change it.
You can do a Get Info (CMD and i Keys together) on the app itself and then Paste a new icon to the top field.
The other way is to edit/change the icns file in the App itself.
Right/Control Click the app and choose Show Package Contents.
Open the Contents folder then Resources and the iChat.icns file is in there
I am presuming that if you use the first method - the bit that puts the Red area with the number in it uses something else (possibly the icns file)
I cannot find any "supply" of the red numbers. In fact I use Chax (An iChat Add-On) that changes this to the first part of the first IM that is not read - which suggests the red area is the important bit.
If you do try to edit the .icns file I would save the Original first.

Messages and iChat

I upgraded to mountain lion but all my friends still have snow leopard or lion, so they use ichat. Is there a way to send messages and video chat with people who have AIM or mac ichat accounts using messages?

yes you should still be able to communicate with them. They have to have an AIM account minimum. I do not remember if iChat lets you add a jabber account.
