Camera just died... should I stick with MiniDV format?

I only need SD and I want to make sure I get a camera that works well with FCP 6. Should I stick with MiniDV format or are there Memory Card or Hard Drive based cameras that work well for SD shooting and FCP? Thanks

Hello Bruce,
What kind of budget are you looking at when it comes to the purchase of your next camera?
As a previous owner, I highly recommend purchasing a used, low hours, Panasonic AG-DVX100B.
It is a fantastic camera, I don't want to start up a war of the SD cameras in this thread but I personally believe it is the best SD camera ever made. And many others feel the same way. It can shoot in multiple frame rates (24P, 24PA, 30P, and 60i) and with the cameras scene files it makes it easy to get the look you want. It is built like a tank and with the Leica lens you get very good quality with no need to transcode to a different format for FCP.
Do some research on them if you haven't already. I guarantee you wont be disappointed if that is the route you took. I know I wasn't.

  • Pre teen wants an apple ipad. is the 3 refirbished got all the bugs out or should I stick with the 2?

does the refirbised iPad 3 have all the bugs out or should I stick with the iPad 2?

There a few reports of issues, but those expereincing them are in a very small minority. I've never had issues with either of mine.
My suggestion would be the refurbished 3rd generation. A refurbished unit will have had a little extra testing and basically be a new iPad. Also, the 3rd gen has a faster processor and a better screen than the 2, and will run Siri (the 2 won't).

  • Camera just up and stopped working with flash player. SUUUUPER annoying. Any ideas?

    Hi:
Windows XP SP3 32bit, latest updates applied
    Firefox 3.6.6 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.6) Gecko/20100625 Firefox/3.6.6 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0E))
    IE 8.0.6001.18702
    Flash Player 10,1,53,64
HP EliteBook 8530w with built-in HP camera (brand spankin' new).
So Flash Player today decided it doesn't want to work with my webcam. I have pulled my hair out trying to figure out what the problem is. The camera works fine with other video camera software, such as Adobe Flash Live Encoder 3.1, for example, or the various Microsoft cam tools. But Flash Player just won't see it. When I visit a website that uses the camera through flash, all I get is a black box. I never get the privacy screen that asks me if I would like to allow the site temporary access to my camera. If i go into my settings, and go to the camera tab, it shows my camera device in the dropdown box. But you know how if you double-click the little box under the dropdown, it should activate your camera and display a little video inside that box? That doesn't work for me. All I get is this:
It doesn't matter if I use FF or IE. I've re-installed Flash Player, both the FF version and the Ax version. To no avail. I've logged into my computer as a different user, because hell maybe it's some weird dumb thing in the Flash Player cache or something. Nope.
Now here's the super, super, super annoying part: I just recently moved to this laptop and one of the things I was looking forward to was a computer where my webcam would FINALLY work with flash player again. Yes, that's right: my old computer had this exact same problem. And in both cases, at one point the camera worked with Flash player no problem, and then at some point, it just stopped working.
This makes me think, of course, that the problem is some nefarious piece of software I've installed, but I can't think of what that is. I know the camera was working with my new computer as early as last week. Recently I've installed a bunch of software, including Adobe Media Live Encoder 3.1, Flash Professional CS5, and the Adobe Connect add-in. I've uninstalled everything except CS5, because, hey, who wants to re-install that if they don't have to? I'll do that as a last result, but the guy sitting next to me has the entire CS5 suite installed and camera works fine for him with Flash Player (same exact hardware too), so I don't think it's that. Other than that, I dunno. I've got VS2008 and 2010 installed. GoToMeeting. Office. That's about it.
So. Any ideas? Any thoughts on how I could even start to debug the issue? Logging or something? Any help is much appreciated.

    Yes.
    Victory is mine.
    VICTORY IS MINE!!!
    Solution:
    Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\mms.cfg
    Set
    AVHardwareDisable=1
    to:
    AVHardwareDisable=0
Restart your browser. Done. Camera works now.
I really want to shout this solution from the rooftops, because try Googling the solution sometime. I did. I failed. You will too. Hopefully if I use some more 18-point bold font, Google will index it faster, because that's the way it works right?
I actually had no idea that Flash Player has a folder in Windows\system32 at all, and I definitely had no idea that this file existed. I am guessing some stinking app I installed decided I needed AVHardwareDisable set to 1 for some reason (effers). I found out about the location by just lazily searching through the windows registry for "Flash Player" and eventually saw it pointing to that directory. A little more poking around and I found this file.
Those of you who actively support this forum: please keep this in the back of your mind, next time someone has audio/video input problems with Flash Player. I've found an awful lot of forum posts from people with cameras not working, and I bet a good portion of them need this fix. Reinstalling Flash Player will not fix it. Here's hoping the solution comes up in Google for the next unlucky soul.

  • TX2-1015au Is it worth upgrading to windows 7 or should I stick with Vista

    Hi there
I bought last month a TX2-1015au, I have been happy with it general perfomance, use it as a laptop at home to watch dvd's and play furcadia and some basic word processing in Office 2007 pro. At work I use it in a tablet form to read emails and surf the web.
Now I applied for the HP windows 7 uprade its been approved and my disc should be here soon.
It has Vista Home Premium  32 Bit, I stuck a spare ram module I had lying around at home so it has 3 gig ram now insted of 2 and will buy a new 2 gig module soon as I have some free cashso it has 4 gig ram.
I did as a experiment in stall a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit I had at home from the desktop pc, I didnt enter a serial number as I went as I was just testing. (i did make my recovery disks first)
Firstly it was booting fast, but after I installed the AHCI  driver, the boot times slowed. I downloaded and installed the Smart media apps  and they failed to launch except for the dvd player.
    so heres some questions:
    1) The serial number that comes with your HP upgrade kit, can that be used to activate a 64bit windows 7?
    2) if you clean install can you use the windows 7 driver disk Hp supply afterwoulds?
    3) If you install over vista following Hp's instructions how much disk space is lost?
    4) if you clean install, is there undocumented steps to take to install the smart media and get it to install and launch.
    5) Is there a away to back up the recovery partition?
    6)  if the os is not broke should I fix it? (should I upgrade or not)
    7) Do you loose any features or funcionability  after upgrading?
well thanks in advannce for your help,
    rgds Wonderzebra

    1. Yes, you can use the same license key you get from the upgrade kit from HP to activate win7 64-bit as long as it is for the same version (for example, win7 home premium 32bit to win7 home premium 64bit. I had my tx2 pre-installed with vista 32bit, upgraded to win7 32bit thru hp's kit, then perfomed a clean install to win7 64-bit.
    2. I'm not sure, what i did instead was download the drivers from the HP website.
    3. Not sure as well, didn't really bother to look.
    4. Yes. Currently the mediasmart installer on hp's website is glitchy. You only have to do a special step on one, that is for mediasmart smartmenu. (make sure you haven't installed any mediasmart program yet before you perform these steps, otherwise uninstall them all first then reboot)
    - download and install winrar: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
    - download (but dont open yet!) the hp mediasmart smartmenu from hp's website
    - right-click that file download from hp, then select "open with winrar"
    - go to mssmartmenu folder, then to hp > tmp > src > then double-click smartmenusetup64.msi, it will launch the installer
    - after the installation, you may now go ahead and download and install the rest of the mediasmart software posted on hp's website and it should install properly. Make sure that you have also installed HP Quick Launch buttons to make use of that "M" button on the screen bezel.
    5. The recovery discs are already backed-up partiion.
    6. There are lots of articles online about the difference of 32bit and 64bit OSes, but most people go 64bit to be futureproof, and to enable their laptops to recognize 4gb+ RAM,
    7. Unless you have some old devices whose drivers are only for 32bit systems, no. 32bit softwares can run on 64bit OSes.

  • I want to run Photoshop and Light room on my mac, but I'm worried that osx only running eight bits of color will lead to lower quality picture results. Should I stick with Windows?

The headline sums it up. Will running the programs in Windows result in better pictures? Do professionals do touch ups on Mac? Thanks for your responses! I'm new to this.

"Deep colour" - meaning a 10bit colour driven display - can only be achieved in hardware with a screen and a graphics card that support both. The average Windows system does not support this - few do. Only Windows workstation level graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia support this option. These are generally more expensive than consumer cards of the same caliber.
Many screens with so-called 10bit support often fake the extra colours by introducing dithering - true 10bit displays are only manufactured by companies such as Eizo - and they are expensive: prices range to around almost $2000 for a 24" 10-bit screen from Eizo. You also need a special HDMI cable, I believe.
Also, the software must support a 10bit workflow. These are far and between. I believe even Lightroom still does not support this - Photoshop does from version CS5 and up.
If you have a hard time understanding all this: no worries. The reason why you are confused and worried is because you lack the know-how, and, subsequently, reading all that "10bit colour is unsupported on Macs" made you anxious.
In reality, while Windows does support this (and Macs do not), almost no-one uses it currently (beyond high-end film/FX work, cad/cam, and a couple of high end Photographers). Any generic consumer and even most workstation level Windows machines will not support it unless all the hardware and software is properly set up. And it is very costly. Colour management becomes even more intricate with 10bit displays.
In a nutshell: much ado about nothing. A Mac is great for design work, as are well equipped Windows machines. By far the majority of professionals in Photography, Graphic design, Video and Effects editing, and so on, currently work without 10bit hardware, and produce outstanding work.
Unless you are spending at least around $2000 on screen hardware, and limit yourself to a very small group of applications that also cost an arm and a leg, you are not going to be able to use 10bit on Windows either.
You can forget what you have read - it is of no consequence to you. (or if you are interested, learn the technical backgrounds.)  Perhaps in 10~20 years the situation will have changed.

I actually think Godaddy's pretty good, and reasonable. Also, you could always upgrade to a dedicated server (or a dedicated virtual server or whatever they call it) if you want better server-ing.
As for the slowness - that might not be Godaddy's fault. I'm not really sure though, and I'd be interested to know if it loaded faster from another host, but perhaps it has to do with iWeb / lack of site optimization, rather than Godaddy.

  • What sequence settings should I use with multiple formats?

I'm starting a new project in CS6 that's using multiple types of video.  I've got old camcorder video from 20 years ago...as well as digital video...and current HD video.  I want all the video in the sequence to output as full screen.  So do I need to use the 720 x 480 settings to accommodate the old camcorder video?  Or will that mess up my new HD stuff?  Thanks.

First you need to force Premiere to interpret the camcorder files as widescreen. So highlight all the camcorder files from the project panel, right-click and select Modify -> Interpret Footage. Then change the pixel aspect ratio to "D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2121)".
Next you need to upscale the camcorder files to the HD project window size. So after you drop them on to your timeline... highlight one or more of them, right-click and select "Scale to Frame Size".
Finally you may want to fine tune it to remove edge artifacts or borders. There's a few ways to do this but the quickest would be to just slightly increase the Scale settings in the effects control panel. Once you have a good look, you can just copy and paste the scale settings to all the other clips on the timeline.
Alternatively, you can use Red Giant Instant HD to do the up-scaling as I'm sure it do a much better job.

  • Should I bother with Aperture

I'm a avid iphoto user and have about 20+ gigs of photos on my MBpro. I don't presently own a camera that shoots raw but expect to buy one in the next year or two. A photographer is going to give us a thousand pics from our recent wedding weekend and I wanted to know whether I should ask for them in raw or jpeg. I know iphoto can import raw but is it worth it to buy Aperture to possibly edit the pics? I fiddle with the histogram settings in iphoto quite a bit.
Second question: is Aperture easy to administer? We are running out of room on our hardrive and will probably have to store some photos on an external drive. Is this complicated? Time Machine has nearly filled our 300gig external drive and so we will probably need to buy a larger external drive soon. Should I stick with iphoto or progress to Aperture?
Any advice would be great. thx

By all means get your wedding pix in RAW format. In fact the photog almost surely has the pix in RAW+JPEG, so he/she should be willing to deliver in both formats at no cost difference. In addition to allowing huge latitude in post-process editing, RAW captures contain more image data.
I strongly recommend that every digital photog with adequate computer hardware first spend $33 and work through the tutorial CD Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 1.5 (Apple Pro Training) by Orlando Luna and Ben Long (Paperback - Oct 18, 2006). Have the CD and a MacIntel with minimum 2 GB RAM (preferably more) prior to ordering the Aperture trial so you don't waste time of the 30 day trial. Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual.
IMO trying Aperture without the tutorial's guidance is a waste of time, leading to bad habits and/or just not getting it.
Note that you probably should ignore Shell's confusing post above; IMO Shell is just confused.
When you do go to buy a DSLR, note that there is always a delay from the time any brand new DSLR is introduced until various software supports the new model's RAW conversions. Different RAW converters variously show up sooner/later, and different RAW converters work better/worse with different models. E.g. Adobe's Nikon D300 conversions are out now but apparently do not do a very good job.
Typically the time frame is 1-3 months, so the very earliest adopters of new models may have to wait a month or two to convert their RAW images. All good DSLRs have a RAW+JPEG capture choice, however, so even the earliest adopters can manage images immediately.
Safely storing 20,000+ images using a laptop as a base is complicated. No way around that reality. Aperture provides several mechanisms (vaults, projects, etc.) that assist in the the process, and there are regularly threads here on the topic.

  • Convince me to "stick with Fireworks"

    Hi All,
I switched from Photoshop to Fireworks back in 1999 - because of its mix of Vector & Raster editing, slice/export and GIF animation capabilities. I've stayed loyal I think you'll agree!
But... my command of Photoshop and Illustrator has suffered. I feel there's so much I could do with those tools not only for for print, but also for websites.
I tried going back to Photoshop a few times over the years but just couldn't manage its drawing tools - maddening!
However, I'm now seriously considering switching if PS does what I need... and more.
    FW cons
Most web design job ads specify PS not FW
I need to be adept with PS and AI for print etc. I'm fossilizing!
Assets and Artwork are often PS and AI files, it'd be good to share files with others in the company without probs
It'd be good to use the same app and sometimes the same files for web and print
Raster Image editing is more basic
    Less 'painterly' in its capabilities.
Feels like I need to move on and upskill as a designer
    FW pros
Can I draw in PS as easily as FW? - or will I need to awkwardly integrate Illustrator into the workflow?
Handy sometimes to make animated gifs (but perhaps I should do it in Flash)
    I'm expert with it.
So here it is: Why should I stick with Fireworks?
Thanks all! I'll be keen to hear your views
    John

Ditto -- bummer of a workflow.
Someone will eventually consolidate these apps into a plugin-based framework like Firefox. I made a blog post about this, urging people to request this as a (huge) feature.
    I, too, need convincing.
I recently switched, hoping to avoid the duality of Photoshop & Illustrator, then found out FIREWORKS CAN'T EXPORT TO EPS?!?! I thought I had beaten the system -- vector AND raster drawing.... I'm still waiting for someone to make a plugin. I'd pay good money for this!
Right now, the only convincing feature is the unique object-oriented nature of fireworks.

  • What brand of blu ray should I go with?

Should I trust Vinpower Digital Blu ray discs or should I stick with Sony and Verbatim
On New Egg I can get  25gb Vinpower Digital Single layer printable Blu-ray discs with nice blue jewel case, for  only 4.99$
Or should I stay with Sony and Verbatim and pay twice as much? I produce Wedding Videos and I'm Just starting to use Blu-ray, before then I did all my videos on DL Verbatim DVD's because I learned that most other brand DVD's Don't always work.

Verbatim or TY. Don't get Sony.

  • Have 4x512mb, okay to add 2x1gb or stick with another 4x512mb

    Hey guys,
I have 4x512mb of RAM so far split between riser A and B. Would it be sub optimal to add 2x1gb to one of the risers or should i stick with adding another 4x512mb for 4gb total? Or is it not that big of a difference?
I don't do FCP, maybe a little iMovie in the future but majority of my time is spent on WoW =P
    Thanks in advance

I recently struggled through a similar decision, you should be fine adding another 2x1GB sticks - the case has simple instructions printed on the inside showing the order that the RAM should be installed. I assume you have your 4x512MB split so two are on top and 2 are on the bottom.
Put your 2x1GB on the top to fill the tray. This way you have room to add two more sticks if you decide you'd like a little more.
I'm also a WoW player along with some new memory I also added an additional hard drive to speed things up. What a difference! I was originally only using the 1GB that came with the computer and my hard drive was maxed out.

  • Upgrading to 4.7 breaks old projects. Stick with 4.5?

I just upgraded to Flash Builder 4.7 and found that many of my projects are now broken. Many of my projects require a previous overlay of the AIR SDK and that doesn't seem possible with 4.7. For those projects should I stick with 4.5?
For the projects where I don't need to overlay an older AIR SDK, I see some of the following warnings:
The definition mx.core.ByteArrayAsset...could not be found
The definition mx.core.FontAsset ...could not be found
The definition mx.core.MovieClipAsset ...could not be found
The definition mx.utils.Base64Encoder ...could not be found
I checked my code and these "definitions" don't seem to be explicitly mentioned. What the heck did they do with 4.7?!
Should I skip 4.7 and stay with 4.5?

I might stick with 4.5 for th projects where I have to overlay an older AIR SDK (downgrade the AIR SDK).
However, what about the dependacy errors I am getting for the other projects which is okay to use the latest and greatest? Why is everything broken?
How can I fix many of these issues? The FontAsset issue should have been fixed by now: @see https://twitter.com/thibault_imbert/status/244647652099231744
Here's a good article I found regarding the 4.7 upgrade:

Should I get the new one and pay an extra ten a month and then add my 5 dollar text plan or should i stick with current phone?
here are major concerns: is the 3g actually that much faster than the 2g?
is there actually a yellow screen on every model? or is that just particular defected models? cuz i was playing around with one at apple store and it didnt seem yellow to me!
    speaker quality good?
any other comments? any other problems with the new iphone that anyone has noticed that i havent mnetioned.
i do really appreciate any comments

    wi fi off
    3g off
apple home page draw 36 seconds
    wifi off
    3g on
    apple home page draw 21
wifi on (n network airport extreme)
apple home page draw is 10 seconds.
of course this can vary on another day but it let's you know it is much faster for 3g. watch out for battery drain on 3g ... but you can disable 3g if you get low.
worth buying if you do a lot of cell phone internet activity mail and browser. also location stuff is a better than first version. No I saw no phones with yellow tint.
