Camera moves on still - Motion tutorial?

Motion.
I'm looking for a tutorial ... ?  I do have the Motion collection of Tutorials – they seem to get into multi-layering and brute moves, but don't get into the detail of managing the keyframes in terms of controlling the dynamics of the moves.
I'm wanting to do extensive moves on stills.  I don't want to 3D the still.  I want to stay IN the frame of the image.  But I want to be able to move to an object, pause, move to another, move in, move out ... all very smoothly.
I'm struggling with handling the keyframes, being able to control my speed from point to point, and making the slowdowns and speedups glass smooth.
I'm trying to figure the best way to handle this with the most efficiency.  Just setting keyframes?  Or using the camera?
Any suggestions would be most appreciated,
Thank you,
Ben

Maybe they realised how popular it was and decided to put it back on the shelf for sale.  Wouldn't fault them for that.
I have to say, after years of grinding my teeth, and using it on scores of films, I still don't get the FCP keyframing.  Incomprehensible to me.  I can move stuff around easily enough, it's controlling the acceleration and deceleration that I've never managed to get working.
Thanks for that Shane.  If I find something I'll report back here.  Or maybe I'll just bite the bullet and work on it myself.
I've figured it out a number of times in the past -- but months, years, go by and I don't use Motion.  Not like riding a bicycle.
All the best,
Ben

  • Camera move stutter in motion

having a problem with rendered motion projects with an irregular stutter in camera moves in a couple of 1080i motion 5 projects, i have a key frame animated view point camera doing some relatively fast moves over 3d objects. the objects are PSD files, both images and PSD text. the moves are basically ease in, ease out, both horizontal and vertical.
it's not simply the stutter one gets with a credit crawl... i.e. too few frames over too fast a motion... rather it's inconsistent, every 6th frame or so, a small jump back or repeated frame. i have tried every export setting combination i can think of, best, normal, motion blur, frame blending, inderlaced, progressive adjusting the project shutter angle, etc. i'm exporting at pro res 4444. and the stutter is present there as well as when i transcode to .h264
i have the latest update of motion from the other day, ATI 5870 and 18Gb of ram on an 8 core mac pro, running os 10.8
any thoughts how i can get rid of this stutter?  thanks!

thanks, so much for the reply! sadly i'd tried both to no effect. I had been using the mountain lion beta; not sure how or why it would have affected motion, but i just got the newest ML beta and preliminary results seem to promissing. i'll test it out with someo of the earlier projects and report back. thanks again!

  • Frustrated: No visible camera movement through 3d

Hope someone can help me, an AE beginner.  Here's what I want to do and haven't been able to so far.  I want to move one camera in a simple, slightly curving path through 3D and have it move towards and then past stationary still photos.
    What I have so far.
One comp consisting of 5 layers.  All layers set to 3D.
Top layer is a solid with fractal noise effect animated creating a fog/cloudy look (background)  Z axis= 200
2nd layer is a still photo scaled pretty small.  Appears as small rectangle in front view.   Z axis=  -- 200
3rd layer is a null object. (entitled camera master)  This layer/cam follows simple straight motion path from Z axis = -- 400 to 450, all the way through
photo layer and solid (foggy/cloudy) layer.
4th layer is a null object entitled camera movement and its parent is "camera master" layer
5th layer is 35mm camera and its parent is "camera movement layer".
(got this camera set-up somewhere on internet.)
Basic set up is one camera with a 2D photo in front of it and a solid object (set at comp height/width) in the background.  Space between each.  Camera path is straight line through both to a spot behind 1st layer (foggy background).
When I preview/play this in custom view the camera moves right through and past both top layers which seems to be what I want...that is the camera moving towards the photo...it growing larger and sliding past camera and off frame and approaching background, going through it and out to nothing...but this does not happen....there is absolutely no visible movement on the photo's or background's part.  Now i know I could animate it and put it on a motion path to scale up or move towards the cam. etc... but this is AE...can't I "dolly" a camera through/around stationary objects/layers?
Hope someone can help me here because I'm stuck.

Should setting the photo to 3D (in layers panel) make a difference?  that's what i've done...  Also the photo is scaled down smaller than comp size.  Currently topmost layer (background solid) is visible beyond photo.

  • Distortion tools won't work and camera movements either...why?

    2 questions:
Over the course of my work with motion I have somehow disabled the option of being able to control skew and all distortion effects with my mouse. I am having to do everything with control points now.
    1. What did I do?
I've selected the tool and the object in the timeline and I just can't manipulate the object.
My other question involves the camera tool. I get no response from any of my camera effects and no control over any camera movement. It just remains a stagnant shot.
    2. Wgat did I do?
    Thank you for your help.

Uploaded through Bridge CC photos from my camera; went through the motions, not paying attention, but it did NOT save 'em where I usually save 'em; how can I ask Brindge or just the Mac Finder the last files I downloaded & where I saved 'em too? Oh, yeah, it ERASED the photos from my camera. I basically just need to ask my Mac (OS 10.8) where I downloaded 'em to. Thanks!

Uploaded through Bridge CC photos from my camera; went through the motions, not paying attention,
I'm not sure I do follow this, what do you mean with motions? can you specify this?. I assume you used Photodownloader? BTW, Not paying attention is usually not the best way when importing images...
but it did NOT save 'em where I usually save 'em; how can I ask Brindge or just the Mac Finder the last files I downloaded & where I saved 'em too?
When you import files they are written to your disk and therefor no need for save them, the files are already at your disk or written to the location you choose as destination. You could select your computername in the navigation column and then use the list view and choose the column last modified but this is not always showing the correct result. You could also do a spotlight search (or use the free Easy Find you can download from Devon) and choose to search for the extension you have shot your files in (Raw, jpeg??) and then choose modification date to sort.
There is not a log (at least not to my knowledge) that keeps track of all of your movements unless you have installed such application (don't know if there is one but I think there will be a thrid party or script written by someone). You could try Console (in the utilities folder) that holds your logs and reports but this is usually for crash or forced quit situations.
Oh, yeah, it ERASED the photos from my camera. I basically just need to ask my Mac (OS 10.8) where I downloaded 'em to. Thanks!
Well, this would mean you would have first select the option to do so in Photodownloader. While I use PDL on a daily base I always thought this option should not even be present to choose and you certainly should not use it to delete originals.
Like Curt already stated you have to use the camera software for this with the card in the camera. Either delete but preferable format the card. Mind you, this should not be done before you are sure where your files are written to and after you have checked randomly to see if the previews have build correctly for the newly imported files. Then you should make a back up of those files and only then start thinking about erasing or formatting the card for new use.
If you have not done very strange things (like choosing the card as destination but if so they might still be there- check finder in column mode- or wrote them to an external disk - where they also still should be) the files should be somewhere at your system. Just do an extensive search and if the files are really important check for recovering software for your card.
And follow the steps described above for importing, sometimes we need to learn our lessons the hard way (and I have been there too...)

  • Matching up camera  move

I'm relatively new to shake and had a question. I need to comp a live, underwater shot (w/camera moving-pan) with a GS shot with a similar move. My problem is the two shots/movements aren't exactly lined up. What is the best way to go about matching/sinking up the two shots? Please help.
    Thank you

Since you're new to Shake, I would suggest you work through Tutorial Chapter 7
    "Tracking and Stabilization".
I assume that the underwater shot needs a dose of SmoothCam, as Patrick suggests,
but maybe the foreground moves were shot with a dolly, so you can skip the
stabilization? Otherwise you have to stabilize the foreground, too.
Either way, since the camera moves don't match exactly, you probably
need to insert a Move2D node in the foreground after SmoothCam and
before the comp. Then you could manually keyframe additional motion
to make the camera paths match.

  • Recording Camera Movements

    Hi
Is there a way to simply record the camera movements in 3d space as i move the camera with the mouse.
In the puppet pin system, i can press the ctrl key and mouse down on one of the pins, as i move the mouse arround, the movements are recorded and i can play back the movement.
With the camera, i would like to move the camera withe the mouse and have those movements be saved. I dont want to dray a path and have the camera follow it, I want to move the camera and see the result as i go and record it all in real time.
I seem to remember something like a null recorder?
    Thank You

The data will be 2D, though, so it may still be of limited use. There is no true way to interactively record 3D motion in AE.

I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Project that is HD, and tried reconnect media with original HD movies (video), the sequence project got distorted for all the text, shapes used and all.. everything changed its orientation and scale.. Is there a way by which I can preserve my work done on DV PAL and switch it preserving its proportions, scale and orientation, but on a HD project sequence?? Appreciate your help and advice..

Yes.  A couple of ways that might work.
    First Way
What you need to do is load one of your hd clips in the viewer and edit into a new HD sequence.  Does it display correctionly?
OK, select the clip in the hd timeline and copy (command-c).  Now go to the HD sequence with the material that's distorted.  Select all (command-a) and paste attributes (option-v) and choose basic motion and distort.  That should maek things work.  What won't work is anything that you've adjusted as far as basic motion or distort in your PAL sequence.  That I'm pretty sure you'll have to redo.
    Second Way.
Choose your original PAL sequence and do a Media Manage changing the sequence preset to the appropriate HD paramenters with the media offline.  You then should be able to reconnect these clips with your original HD media.

  • IMPORT CAMERA MOVIES INTO IPAD

Hello... I am trying to import movie(s) filmed on my Sony Cyber-shot HX9V into my iPad 3 using the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit using my camera’s USB cable. (Importing using the memory card connector only imports photos from what I have experienced).  Once connected from camera to ipad I receive a message: "Accessory Unavailable: The attached accessory uses too much power".  I have plugged and unplugged numerous times to NO success.  Question: does anyone have know how to resolve this problem?  Must I use some "app" such as iMovie for the iPad...or?? an import via the app?
I am able to successfully export movies into my iMac via card reader and open up in iMovie on my iMac.

Just checked the Camera specs and it seems you have a bunch of options when it comes to movie recording.
Can you post what format the videos are you recorded?
This is from the Apple iPad3 tech specs:
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Keep an eye of the appendix .m4v,.mov, .mp4 and compare it with your camera. Are your recordings also stored in the DCIM folder (i guess yes)?

  • Baking a Layer with Camera Movement

Picking up on my adjacent post...
I'm trying to bake a layer in a project that has camera movement... we start on a man in closeup and then we zoom out to a long shot. But if I turn off the camera, the man is in closeup and stays that way. Baked and imported into the project, you'll have just the man's head when the camera pulls back in the live project.
With the camera on during baking, there's the move. But now import that into the project, and the camera motion is double applied -- the baking time and the live time.
    How is this done?
Thanks very much for your help.

You can export the layer with the camera turned on, which will "bake in" the camera move, then when you bring it back in, put it in a 2D group so that it's not affected by the project camera.

  • Can digital camera movies (MPEGs) be downloaded to and played on Apple TV?

Can digital camera movies (MPEGs) be downloaded to and played on Apple TV? I know that it can play downloaded "real" movies, but what about movies made on digital cameras

Some cameras will record in mpeg4, however they may have unsupported audio formats or otherwise not fit the specifications required for the tv. In essence some cameras may produce video that will play directly on the tv.
If your files are mpeg4 and won't play, itunes will most likely convert them to the correct format (advanced/convert for Apple TV), if they are mpeg1, mpegstreamclip will convert them for you. If your files are mpeg2, mpegstreamclip will still do the job but you will need to install the Quicktime mpeg2 playback component ($20)

  • Can't find the camera move behavior & 3D scene icon for the camera

Since a couple of days I've been playing around in the 3D environment in Motion 3.0.1
Unfortunately I can't find the (official) "camera move behavior" as used in the templates with comes with Motion 3. This particular behavior must be used to animate camera moves as far as I understand.
Furthermore I can't find the 3D scene icon for the camera. By having this representation of the camera it would be a lot easier to follow what the camera is looking at along it's motion path.
Thanks in advance for your help. . .

    Hi gents,
First of all thanks for your input!
I've found the solution for my missing 3D camera icon.
When I'm in (3D) perspective mode I found out that per default Motion doesn't show the camera icon.
I've to zoom out of the 3D scene to actually see this camera icon. As per default the view is inside from a gigantic camera, which is only visible when I zoom out.
Furthermore I understand that I can animate the camera via it's own transform properties. But I was just wondering where the camera move behavior as used in the templates with comes with Motion 3 came from.
Thanks and have fun over there!

  • Get strange banding/artifacting whenever camera moves

    Hello,
I'm trying to build a simple DVD of a movie project I edited in Final Cut Pro. I have been doing this for several years and don't recall ever coming across this sort of problem.
On a static shot the image looks fine. But whenever there is camera movement I am getting this awful banding or artifacting (not sure how to describe it really) in the edges of the subject on the screen. Especially if both the camera and subject are moving simultaneously. Once the camera lands it looks ok again.
My normal workflow is to export a self contained Quicktime movie out of Final Cut, Import into Compressor, then create the files for DVDSP.
I have experimented with different compression methods:H264, Photo JPEG, Apple Pro Res, etc. All of the movie files look great playing in Quicktime or FCP, but then when I use Compressor to convert to AC3 and M2V for DVDSP4 this issue occurs. I am using the DVD Best Quality 90 Minute preset in Compressor. I see it both on my Apple 30" Display as well as both of my Flat Screen TV's (one is LCD and one is Plasma).
I have experimented with DVDSP bit rates and still get it.
    Any ideas?
    Many Thanks,
    Peter

Ok, then you need to do as I described in the previous post.
After dropping the 4:3 timeline into the 16:9 timeline, scale it to 133% (you have to sacrifice resolution if you want to fill the 16:9 frame). You may need to vertically re-position certain parts of your content. Do it by moving the clip up or down in the 16:9 timeline, not in your original 4:3 timeline. After you are done, export using "current settings" and encode in compressor. If you stay within the DV-domain, and use same framerate and lower field in both timelines, field order will not get swapped, and your m2v will look fine.
    Another edit:
A little late, maybe, but - if this is only watched on a computer monitor, nothing of what I have written will change what you see. This only applies when played on an interlaced TV. Still very important to get right tho.
If you want to lose the fields and thus fake a progressive image, you need to apply the de-interlace filter to all your footage in FCP.

  • Camera movements in flash

I've been scouring the internet and searching user forums for
tutorials and tips on how to produce camera movements. Most of the
3d programs I've used (as well as Mojo) have had internal
easy-to-use cameras. Please tell me that I don't have to learn
action script to be able to do things like simple slow zooming or a
quick cut to a close up on a character's face. (In case you can't
tell, I primarily use flash for character animation.)

the analog way is to simply place entire "scenes" in a symbol
    - then scale/motion tween/pan the
symbol around the stage (make sure the scene extends well
    beyond the stage area).

  • 3D Camera Move in CS4

I'm running a Mac-Pro v 10.6 with after effects cs4.  Anytime I make a 3D camera move the end result looks jerky.  It doesn't seem to matter if I use still images or video, all the camera moves are glitchy.  Does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks in advance

Suppose I have 10 still frame images and I arrange them on a X axis in 3D space to the right.  If I set a keyframe for the 3D camera on the first picture and 30 seconds into the timeline I set another keyframe at the last picture, the end rusult is a camera move that is for the most part good, but it gets noticably jerky.  The camera move is not fluid.  I was able to use this technique numerous times on my old PC and now that I have a Mac my 3D camera is useless until I can figure out what is wrong.
