Camera profile with CS2 and DNG

If I embed a camera profile in a DNG file and open it in ACR for Photoshop CS2, will I have the benefit of the camera profile?

Thank you. I had seen that FAQ; I was hoping that by embedding the profile in a DNG, I would get around the incompatability.
Frankly, I don't see what's so special about a profile that they can't get CS2 to support it. Kinda annoying, when combined with the fact that CS2 doesn't support new cameras. It seems that's merely aimed at getting people to upgrade and spend $$$. Even Microsoft supports their legacy products for a few years!

  • Camera Raw 3.7 And DNG 3.7

    Hi.
I use Photoshop Cs2 on my PC using Windows XP.
Yesterday I down loaded Adobe camera raw 3.7 and DNG 3.7.
Now I cannot open my raw files,I get a message saying it is not the right kind of file, also when I convert my raw files to DNG they come into the bridge as icons not thumb nails.
I wondered whether anyone can help me with this problem.
    Many thanks.
    John

    > So I downloaded them all.
    > I removed the unzipped file from the common folder plug-ins and put it in my documents folder on the desk top.
    > I put the camera raw and dng plug-ins into the Adobe bridge plug-ins folder.
Hmmm ... my WinXP CS2 installation behaves differently. An update via the 'Help' menu does everything automatically ... no intermediate zip file, and no quessing where the ACR plug-in goes. That is, there's a specific location for it, and the Bridge plugins folder is
not it. But who am I to argue with ...

    cheerios :)

  • Camera profiles with .tiff files

I have a camera not (really) supported directly by LR - so i use .tiff files created by the camera bundled software.
This works fine, and i have earlier had help from this forum regarding lens-profiles using .tiff files, with great success.
Now i would like to be able to use my own camera profiles with LR with my .tiff files - when i open the RAW files (an old version is supported, so they can be opened) the profiles are availiable as expected, but when i change to the .tiff version of the file, the profiles are gone.
    What can i do?
    Best regards
    Henrik - Denmark

In the Camera Calibration tab the only profiles that will be available are for RAW files. Tiff and Jpeg files are already rendered and you will only see "embedded". When you shoot in raw mode applying profiles and adjusting white balance are major benefits in post processing, both are already baked into files rendered by the camera. Or in your case by the camera manufacturers software.
Maybe your camera is supported by a newer version of Lightroom. What version of LR are you using and camera model?

    dear Junbo,
are you working with business content extractor only, i mean no enhancement to that field ? i think it can be 'program error' that po quantity is not correct, try to search oss note ? what's your r/3 PI level ? applied the oss note mentioned before working with lo-mm pur ? it's stated in mm pur extraction doc (if you have not this doc, let's know your email, will send you).
if you are using business content extractor only without enhancement to this field, you may create oss message to get sap help. debug with rsa3 option debug marked is possible.

Question: When I want to send SMS and click on the contact, the contact came out with names and numbers, as if the whole contacts are there in the phone. However, when I open the contact, I can only see 3 contact names and the rest of 4000 plus contacts are not listed, and it makes you difficult to call through contact

The iPhone remembers information about previous contacts.
Complelely independently, you have a Contacts app with a contacts list.  It sounds like your contacts list has 3 names on it.  You need to add a few names.

  • Kernal Panics with CS2 and Bridge?

I have had the Mac Pro for two weeks.
This AM I sent it back to Apple for a new one.
From the day I took it out of the box I experienced

  • How do I install a camera profile into CS2 raw converter

I recently purchased a ColorChecker Passport and along with the software, created a camera profile for my Olympus E-300. The CCP software crated a camera profile that was duly placed into the c:\users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\adobe\cameraraw\cameraprofile\olumpus e-300 Directory. When I open an olympus ORF raw file from cs2 or bridge, and select the calibrate tab the only thing that is available in the camera calibrate box is ACR 2.4. Clicking the drop down arrow doesn't show anything else.
I have turned off colormanagement in photoshop.
Can anybody tell me how I can get photo shop to recognize the new camera profile?
I have tried restarting photoshop and Bridge after the DCp file was added to teh directory.
    ACR verssion 3.7(?)
    OS is windows home 64
    8 gigs of ram
    Photoshop cs2 version 9.0.1
    adobe bridge cs2 version 1.0.4.6
I have also performed the same tasks on photoshop cs3 on my work computer with the same results.

The earliest version of Camera Raw to use DNG Profiles was version 4.6 in Photoshop CS3...so, you won't be able to use that DNG profile in ACR 3.7.

  • How does Adobe make their camera  profiles for ACR and Lightroom?

I'm not interested in the proprietary algorithms , but I am curious as to the photographic mechanics and hardware tools used by  Adobe to make the various camera profiles as they differ markedly from the ones I make using the DNG Profile Editor.
My methodology is to set an X-Rite 24 patch Color Checker target, light it evenly with electromic flash (with 0.1 stops from center to corners as mesured with a Sekonic L-758r Meter) and make a series of exposures bracketed in third of a stop increments around the meter reading in case the camera sensitivity differs from the meter's.
I then process the raw files and convert them to the DNG format, select the best exposure and run it through the DNG Profile editor. My results differ from Adobe's generic profiles for that camera enough that that I don't thin kthe difference can be credited to the difference between a generic profile a specific camera.
How do the different tools work in the DNG converter? Starting with the Options for "Base Tone Curve"? Is there a document a moderately color geeky person can understand that explains this?
I thin kthe DNG Profile editor is a great and under usedtool. I wish more people knew about it.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Someone who only eats sausage may not want to know how it's made.  Someone who creates things with food, a chef, a cook, or otherwise is thinking about a career in the food industry, might have a interest in such things.  Someone who is thinking of making sausage will want to know all the details.  Someone who is concerned with the public safety might want to know how sasauge is made.
It would be nice for a sausage maker to give some hints about the process as compared to what each of us can do with the DNG Profile Editor and to the original poster's question, why are our profiles different from Adobe's?
It is my experience that when I create a profile with the DNG Profile Editor, and then compute the color error for each of the 24 color patches of a CC24, using a program like Imatest, some colors are quite a bit off and some are very close, and the colors that are off, are not the same ones that are off when I compute the color error using one of the Adobe Standard or Camera Standard profiles.
Is Adobe using more detailed and sophisticated color targets with hundreds of different colors, or if not, do the tools provide more feedback and allow more manual manipulation of the profile and so the differences are due to their judgement about which colors to make "right" and which ones to let have more error associated with them, that can be manipulated by hand instead of merely letting the DNG Profile Editor apparently distribute the error amongst the various colors with some sort of even-handed calculation.
For example it is easy to imagine that someone tweaking a profile by hand with a live readout of the error of each of the colors plus an overall composite error, might put more emphasis on skin tones being right if they have a background in people photography, or more emphasis on bright colors being right if their experience is in textiles and the current trend in the US is bright colors--and a different emphasis when the trend is muted colors so there is cultrual bias and life-experience coloring a "standard" profile.
In other words, how much of the difference between Adobe and our profiles are due to Adobe having different or better science, and how much of it is due to Adobe have different or better "artists" who decide what colors to make correct compared to others.

  • Camera Raw 5.2 and DNG Converter Available - Note from Adobe

Camera Raw 5.2 and the DNG Converter is now available:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2008/11/camera_raw_52_and_dng_converte.html
Lightroom will be updated to version 2.2 with equivalent camera support in December.

    Tom Hogarty
Lightroom, Camera Raw and DNG Product Manager

Well, I managed to locate and download both the ACR 5.2 and the DNG 5.2, but it was a bit of a challenge. I have a couple of comments regarding the DNG installation.
As a sometime OS beta tester, I have developed a habit of keeping C:\ for the operating system only. When a new OS or beta is issued, I just format C: and install the new OS. I try to keep applications off C:. It is hard, though, with all the default installations. It would be nice to have the option to install DNG.exe in my applications partition.
My workflow involves importing NEF's from the memory card to a folder, and at the same time converting those NEF's to DNG's and putting them in a different folder in a different partition. Both these NEF's and DNG's are archived. A copy of the DNG's are used as working images. The virtue of DNG's is that there are no sidecar files to keep track of when exporting images. Unless I really mess up, I never go back to the NEF's again. I guess that I am an "outlier" too. I guess that this is essentially the 5 - A "double DNG-only" workflow, using type 2, the native-DNG-DNG system. This is discussed in detail by Barry Pearson at http://www.barrypearson.co.uk/articles/dng/safety.htm#personal
I do like the camera profiles. I previously have used the Fors script. My Nikon D200 lacked red and the Fors script fixed that. Not surprisingly, different profiles are appropriate for different image types. Is there any way of determining the methodology and reasoning between the different profiles, and what specific problems each one is designed to correct. This might permit better matching profiles to image types, with less trial and error.

  • No camera profiles for D90 and D80 files in ACR 8.3?

    Hello,
I recently bought in to Adobe's Creative Cloud and downloaded the latest version of Photoshop and ACR. I love the new process and everything about the new Photoshop, however, when I went to re-edit some older images taken with a Nikon D80 and D90, there were no profiles to be found under the camera calibration tab. What gives? My only option for D90 files is "ACR 4.6" and "ACR 4.4 and 3.6" for the D80 files. Where are all the rest? What am I missing? What's strange is that they are all there in Lightroom. I hate Lightroom, though, and would prefer to continue working within ACR if possible.
Thanks a ton for any insight.

Here is what I have for D90 camera profiles in the Camera\Nikon D90 and Adobe Standard folders under ProgramData with PS-CC and ACR 8.3 installed:

I believe these profiles can also come from installing the DNG Converter 8.3, so if the profiles don't seem to exist, then try downloading and installing the DNGC 8.3 from:

  • Custom DNG camera profiles only available for DNG files?

I developed a custom camera profile for my Sigma DP-1, using a colorchecker chart and the DNG profile editor.
I exported the DNG profile in the default location.
When I open Lightroom or ACR, the new profile is not available for X3F files, only DNG files. Is this normal???

Well, I've imported the original X3F file as well as the converted DNG file in Lightroom.
When I develop the DNG file, my custom profile appears in the list. When I click on the X3F file, embedded*  is the only option.
It may have to do with an incomplete support of the X3F format. I have just repeated the exercise for my D300, and in this case the custom profile is available for NEF files.
Too bad since I'm happy with some of the Adobe camera profiles for the D300, but less so with the default look for Sigma DP-1 files.
I guess I should file a bug report...

  • Camera Profiles with Older Lightroom Version

Using an older version (LR 2.7) on an older Mac G5. Would like to download the camera profiles for my Canon cameras (1Ds MK2, G12) from Adobe but can't find them on line. Since this version is old, do compatible profiles still exist? If so, where might I find them?

You cannot add camera support for newer cameras to an older version of LR by merely downloading profiles.
You have to either update the LR to a version that is newer than your camera or use the DNG Converter that is new enough to create DNGs from the raw files and then those DNGs have enough information for an older version of LR to support them.  The issue you’d have is that the DNG Converter probably only runs on the newer OS as well, so you’ll have to find another computer to convert the files with.

  • Camera Profiles with a Nikon D5200

As from my other threads today, I'm just learning Lightroom and trying to figure things out.
I am shooting with a D5200 and am able to import the raw (NEF) files into Lightroom just fine.  I'm thinking that my "Camera Profile" is not being applied to the files correctly because they look really different compared to the JPEG's that are shot.  I've tried to go into the "Developer" section and change the "Camera Profile" around from something other than Adobe Standard, but the colors still don't look right.
How do I know which Camera Profile is being applied to the raw photos if the only thing that Lightroom shows is a generic "Adobe Standard", "Camera Standard", Vivid, etc.
    Thanks!

Just to be clear, Lightroom does NOT choose ANY profile for raw images from ANY camera. YOU have to choose the profile that you want. Lightroom cannot/does not read that information from the file. Lightroom does NOT use the camera model number as criteria for which profile to use. YOU make that choice. If you find that you use one profile more than others, YOU can change your default settings for your camera to use that profile as a starting point. The profiles provided by Adobe are designed to emulate the camera settings. But they are not intended to be something to use for ultimate results. They are a starting point from which you make other adjustments to get the results you are looking for.
When shooting raw/JPEG the JPEG images may look warmer because they are affected by the in-camera processing. If you find that you consistently need to make your images warmer, make that adjustment along with other adjustments that you want to be standard or automatic, and then make them part of your default settings by saving new default settings.
The default settings which you determine should provide you with a generally acceptable starting point for most of your images. However, you should expect to make individual adjustments as required to get the results you are looking for.
After reading my response I realize I need to make one clarification. Lightroom DOES look at the camera make and model and then allows you to choose from the profiles that were created for that camera. However Lightroom does not choose a profile by itself. While it's true that Adobe Standard is the profile that seems to be the "default" profile, that can be changed to match your shooting style.
If you decide to set camera defaults, you can make those settings camera serial number-specific, or ISO-specific if that is what you feel you need. So far, I haven't found it necessary to go that far. However, I have created my own set of defaults which includes camera profile, white balance, sharpening and noise reduction settings that I find optimal for my camera.

  • Set Camera Profile with a Preset?

I am shooting tethered with a Nikon D700 and I want to apply a camera profile (Nikon D700 Landscape) to each image as it is captured. While tethered, I know how to assign a Preset, what I don't know is how to assign a camera profile to a preset? Thoughts?

You can also fire one shot, then set the profile, then choose 'Same as Previous' from the preset list.
