Camera RAW 4.1 "rendering intent"

When Camera RAW 4.1 creates the output in the user selected color space (Adobe RGB, ProPhoto,...), how does it handle out of gamut colors? Is there any way to affect the choice of "rendering intent"?

"Does this imply that if a RAW image contains heavily saturated, out of gamut colors, then these could appears as featureless "blobs"?"
That depends...it's generally not the highly staurated colors that are the problem. Ironically most color spaces, even sRGB can handle most all the highly saturated colors in nature that a camera can capture (some of course fall out). But it's the DEEP saturated colors where sRGB and even Adobe RGB fail. Deep yellows (browns) and deep oranges are often capable of being captured by the camera and are contained in ProPhoto RGB but are gamut and saturation clipped in sRGB and even Adobe RGB. And yes, those areas can suffer blobiness...

  • Adjust color rendering for your camera in Camera Raw

According to the help node with the above subject, one can embed profiles into TIFF, JPEG, PSD and DNG files and select them within Camera Raw 4.
I can assign profiles to all excepto DNG files, since DNG files cannot be saved and thus cannot be persistently be assigned a profile (say created with ColorEyes 20/20 camera profiler software). How then can I assign a profile to a raw image? Is the help incorrect or mis-written?
    Thanks,
    Juan Dent

Changes introduced with DNG version 1.1.0.0 included new tags AsShotICCProfile (+ AsShotPreProfileMatrix) and CurrentICCProfile (+ CurrentPreProfileMatrix).
If a camera or editor uses these, are the ColorMatrix1 (and if required ColorMatrix2) tags required to be present anyone, for example for ACR to use, while these xICCProfile tags are an optional alternative? How does it all fit together?
    AsShotICCProfile:
"This tag contains an ICC profile that, in conjunction with the AsShotPreProfileMatrix tag, provides the camera manufacturer with a way to specify a default color rendering from camera color space coordinates (linear reference values) into the ICC profile connection space.
"The ICC profile connection space is an output referred colorimetric space, whereas the other color calibration tags in DNG specify a conversion into a scene referred colorimetric space. This means that the rendering in this profile should include any desired tone and gamut mapping needed to convert between scene referred values and output referred values.
"DNG readers that have their own tone and gamut mapping controls (such as Adobe Camera Raw) will probably ignore this tag pair".
    CurrentICCProfile:
"This tag is used in conjunction with the CurrentPreProfileMatrix tag.
"The CurrentICCProfile and CurrentPreProfileMatrix tags have the same purpose and usage as the AsShotICCProfile and AsShotPreProfileMatrix tag pair, except they are for use by raw file editors rather than camera manufacturers".

  • Camera Raw monitor compensation

I have this question: what is the rendering intent in Camera Raw 6 monitor compensation? It is fixed or changes with profile version (v2 and v4)?
And: is the monitor compensation in module Develop of Lightroom 3 the same (i. e. same rending intent?) as in Camera Raw 6?
    Thank you.
    Mauro

I retested with a specific target image for matrix/TRC and, as far as I can see, neither Bridge nor Camera Raw seem to use the monitor profile in any way...
    Can it be?
Note that Bridge has no "Use Color management" switch anywhere in preferences. I also reset prefernces (files and registry) to be sure.
May be that Bridge color management stops at embedded color profiles without using the monitor profile?
    The same for Camera Raw?
By the way I test another well know DAM software... it uses Perceptive intent but at last it sees monitor profiles.
    A very strange matter indeed...

  • Adobe Bridge Photo Downloader with Camera Raw 9 on MAC OS 10.9.5

I just updated to Adobe Camera Raw 9.0 on 4/28/2015.  MAC OS 10.9.5 with PSCS 6 extended.
When I insert my CF memory card to download images, only icons appear.  Images were there last week when CR 8.8 was installed.
Also note, Convert to DNG is greyed out.  No option to convert to DNG on the download.
I tried to locate the Camera Raw.plugin file, but can not find it.  It is no longer in the Application folder/Adobe Photoshop CS6/File Format folder.
Also tried to locate Camera Raw.plugin 8.8 on Adobe's site, it takes you to Camera Raw 9.0.
I just need the Camera Raw.plugin file and where to place the file.  Need to remove Camera Raw 9.0.
    Image below is Adobe_Bridge_CS6_Photo_Downloader_Camera_RAW_8.8.

    Any ideas?

My student has been using Lightroom 4 with Photoshop CS5 on her Mac for well over a year. Because of the difference between the Camera raw version available to her in Photoshop CS5 and the raw process in Lightroom 4, she has been exporting her raw images from Lightroom and choosing the "Render using Lightroom option when it popped up in the dialogue box. She has been doing this for over a year and a half without any problem. Today when she hit Command E no dialogue box appeared and the image just opened in Photoshop. I'm concerned that all of her Lightroom edits are not being rendered to Photoshop. Anyone have an idea as to how we can get the "Render using Lightroom" dialogue back?

  • Bridge freezes when applying camera raw settings to large number of files

I have a folder with 32,000 frames from a time-lapse project that I'm doing. I'd like to apply the same camera raw adjustments to all of these files, and so follow one of the two methods below - neither of which are working with such a large set of files:
    Method 1:
Select all files, open in camera raw.
Apply changes to the first image
Select all images, then synchronize the changes to all other images.
Unfortunately selecting "Open in Camera Raw..." just leaves bridge to hang. It's using a lot of memory and processor time, so I would assume it's working, but there's no progress bar or similar to indicate that it is.
    Method 2:
Open first file in Camera Raw
Apply all changes, and exit camera raw.
Select all files in Bridge, right click on one and select "Develop Settings -> Previous Conversion"
Unfortunately the final step again leaves bridge just thinking. I waited around an hour, closed bridge, but unfortunately when I opened it again there was no sign that it had copied the camera raw settings onto any of the other files. My computer's pretty slow (see below) but it should have written one xmp file in an hour.
    Question:
Does anyone have any workarounds other than repeating the process 32 times for 1000 images at a time?

The files are only 2MP each, and I have the same issue when I apply the changes to RAW files and JPG files. The error occurs though before any changes are applied, before the images would need to be recached, as when the error doesn't occur the dialogue box I mentioned pops up asking what to change.
Your specs sound more then enough I would think. Do you have set the option to Write cache to folders when possible and if so could you uncheck that option?
I don't have experience with this kind of numbers but I do dump the Bridge cache manually on a regular base (every new cycle it seems to be more stable so more interval in the periods of dumping cache) but my main folder contains usually around 6 to 7 K of DNG files from 21 MP dSLR. This starts caching without problems but takes a few hours before done.
Can't use the option cache for folder due to a longstanding problem with error message to replace the CacheT file, hence my question about your setting.
Also I have set the option to previews Always HQ and in the prefs have set the option to build monitor size previews.
As said, don't know the large numbers but the 2 MP files are very small and it should be possible for Bridge I would think?
Did you also try to create a new folder and place the files inthere. Or divide them in to three folders for testing?

  • Camera raw images change colour in adobe bridge

I have photoshop CS4 and import my camera raw images into Adobe Bridge.  When I view the thumbnails in bridge my raw images look vibrant and exactly like they appear on the camera but when I go to open them in camera raw edit they change colour and look washed out before I've made any changes.  Can anyone help me figure out how to correct this?

My camera is set to shoot sRGB JPGs and is set to all zeros for the brightness/contrast/saturation parameters.
What is your camera set to as far as these basic toning settings, as well as any automatic things like DLighting or highlight compression and perhaps any custom curves or whatever that is called for Nikons?
First paragraph - so is mine.
Second paragraph - all other settings are neutral/zeroed/turned off, as per my post to which you responded. That is, no additional tone curves - Active D-Lighting turned OFF (why anyone would let the camera decide what to do do with highlights and shadows is beyond my level of trust) , Jpg compression is Optimal (least possible) et cetera.
Think I now have an explanation for the different displays in ACR (and Bridge) that I have been experiencing. Took a new duplicate Jpg/Raw shot with the in-camera Picture Control set to Neutral. Now, when both the Jpg and .NEF Raw are viewed in ACR, with the ACR Camera profile set to Camera Neutral, they appear, ASAICT, identical. Saved Camera Neutral as the default ACR Camera profile. Now back in Bridge, the images also appear pretty much identical.
I think what was happening previously was that I had failed to save Camera Standard in ACR as the default Camera profile, and it was defaulting to Adobe Standard, and hence it was rendering Raw thumbnails for Bridge to that Camera profile - hence the difference in appearance between the Jpg and Raw in Bridge. Unless I have got it completely wrong,  I think my problem is now solved.

  • Help with NEF files... blown out in Camera raw??

My Nef files look great until I use the magnify tool in bridge or open them in camera raw. Then all of sudden they instantly brighten and some of them look overexposed!! Please help... is there a default setting I need to change?? I'm using the Nikon d700 Adobe CS5.1

    1) if you are doing a raw conversion using Adobe raw converters (ACR/LR) then you shall not be confused w/ embedded JPGs (written by camera's firmware in your raw files) that you might see temporarily while Adobe software renders some inital preview using your default raw conversion settings (you might change those, including default camera profiles = for Nikon cameras Adobe supplies a standard profile and some profiles to emulate OEM settings, exposure correction, etc)
    2) you are are concerned that you in fact overexpose your raws (clipping in raw channels) then just download a free software = http://www.rawdigger.com/ and see the true raw histogramm (not jpeg based histogram that your camera shows), if your raw channels are not clipped then just dial negative expocorrection in ACR/LR and that is it... in most cases it is good to have raw histogram to be as close as possible (and sometimes even clip unimportant parts of the image - specular highlights for example are in many/most/all cases OK when clipped, because there no details for you in them) to clipping - because then you have a good signal to noise ratio for the most important parts of your image...

  • Adobe camera raw 4.6 and nikon raw files from the d700

when opening a nikon raw file from the new d700, the picture appeares almost 1 step brighter than if you open the same picture in nikons capture nx2 software. the same happens when you do so with the new camera raw support in apples aperture - also almost 1 step to bright.

    >I expected that a raw file shows up the same in every raw-converter.
Your expectation is wrong. Every RAW converter will give you a different interpretation of the data. There is no single accepted way of interpreting RAW.
    >shouldn't that be so?
Not really. I think what makes RAW so interesting is that you are not tied to the camera maker's interpretation of the data. This gives one far more versatility to get to your desired result. Of course, if you prefer the camera maker's interpretation, youu can use their software to develop the RAW or you can use the beta profiles in ACR/Lightroom and get
close to identical rendering. I don't know if Adobe released any beta camera profiles for the D700 yet though.

  • Camera Raw vs. Photo Ninja

I've been hearing about a new product called Photo Ninja by the same people who make Noise Ninja, and some of the reviews by respected online personalities have actually touted it as producing superior images to Photoshop's Camera Raw.
Not being one to take others' opinions at face value without testing and looking at results with my own eyes, I requested an evaluation license to see for myself.
I'll say up front that going into the testing I figured Camera Raw would kick this contender to the curb.  It's been (and still is) my opinion that Camera Raw is the best raw converter available today bar none.
Upon first trying out the package, I immediately stumbled upon a number of usability issues that would make PhotoNinja a pain to use...  Things like unexpectedly slow control responses (I have one of the faster PC workstations available), some not quite intuitive controls, a UI that doesn't seem to conform to any known or typical computer standard (though I'll be the first to admit I have limited exposure to OSX)...  It's not surprising someone intimately familiar with Camera Raw might have some initial troubles with the UI of another package, but I stumbled through it.
Mostly I am interested in image quality.  Results - that which matters most to me.
I looked at a number of well-exposed Canon EOS-40D images I have captured, and some not so well-exposed.  I looked at images that were taken with wide angle zoom lenses and needed correction of various kinds of distortion.  In general, if I did something with either converter that made an image better, I attempted to equal or surpass the feat with the other converter.  When I couldn't get things any better I stopped and examined the results.
Before I end up writing an even bigger novel, here are my (brief) observations on image quality so far, followed by a few screen grabs showing comparisons.  Perhaps these can generate discussion...
OVERALL, Photo Ninja (PN) does a decent job - better than I expected, actually - but the devil is in the details.  Photoshop Camera Raw (ACR) just makes images that consistently look better.  I will say that I got to better looking results much more quickly with ACR, but I'm more familiar with it, so that may not be an important observation.
PN can't generate upsampled output (images with more pixels than the number of photosites in the camera), while ACR can.  That flavors the quality - in general it means that while I started out thinking PN might be making images with more detail, it turned out that the more I tweaked each converter the more detail I was ultimately able to bring out with ACR, while PN reached a limit primarily because it couldn't pack the output pixels any tighter.
ACR is generally capable of finer adjustments.  For example, PN can only rotate images in 1/2 degree increments.
Though PN does a quite decent job of de-mosaicing - visibly better than ACR's prior PV2010 process - the color and naturalness of appearance is better to my eye from Camera Raw with PV2012.  Tree branches against bright sky or white buildings just look better and more natural from Camera Raw.  That said, there were several cases where it appeared some lines were rendered more cleanly by PN (see the dark green trellis example below).
ACR's automatic chromatic aberration (CA) correction facilities seem more accurate overall, while PN left more colored fringes in most cases.  On the other hand, ACR in some cases left slightly more colored de-Bayering artifacts.
Both tools seem capable of recovering a LOT of information from nearly overexposed parts of images, though ACR gets the nod for making the transition into overexposure look more natural.
I don't know how much profiling / tweaking capability PN has, and I do know I've tweaked my ACR some, but colors just look cleaner and more healthy to me (with a few exceptions) from ACR.
Anyway, I've made the following screen grabs to illustrate some of the above, Photo Ninja conversions are on the left, Camera Raw conversions are on the right.  Note that the zoom levels are different because I opened images at upsampled resolutions in ACR (as I normally do) while PN cannot do this.
My conclusion:  Though Photo Ninja produces surprisingly good conversions, it's not really serious competition for professionals who want to get the most out of their raw image data.
    -Noel

    Well done, Noel !
Even though ACR won out in your tests, the makers of PN should be pleased with your report and your methodology.  Thanks for sharing.

  • Is Lightroom really better for noise reduction than Adobe Camera Raw?

That's what I keep hearing from Lightroom users (who don't use Photoshop or barely touch it).
Which is better? or are they exactly the same? I'm not referring to a specific version, but I am personally using the latest Cloud versions of everything. I haven't tested it visually, I'm just now getting familiar with Lightroom.

Given the same version number, Lightroom and Camera Raw have the exact same sharpening and noise reduction. The only differences in ACR and LR are usability or UI aspects, the controls and rendering are the same.

  • Output sharpening in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and Photoshop CS5

Output sharpening in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and Photoshop CS5
I want to do two-pass sharpening - capture and output - with output capture done just before I print. I do the initial (capture) sharpening in the ACR Detail/Sharpening panel, with Amount slider set to, for example, 100.  Then, I open the image to PS CS5 as a Smart Object, and use layers and masks for further editting.
My question is, can I go back to ACR for the final (output) sharpening pass?  When I re-open the file in ACR, the Sharpening Amount slider is back to zero, but the other three sliders are still at the settings I used at the start of the process, i.e., the capture sharpening.  If I again set the Amount slider to a positive value, then again open the image in PS for printing, will my second pass through the ACR Sharpening panel take effect - will it accumulate on top of the initial sharpening?
By the way, the reason I want do output sharpening in ACR rather than, say, PS Unsharp Mask, is so I can use the Masking slider in ACR, which is much easier than the comparable techniques available in PS.  I am aware that some say you should not do any masking for the output sharpening. I'd like to though.
    Thanks for ideas.

This is pretty much the way I do it, and I also always found ACR sharpening superior to anything in Photoshop. There is the "sharpen for output" in ACR, but you have little control over it.
The tricky part is feeding the file through ACR a second time. I don't think re-opening the Smart Object will do anything more than you could have done the first time. I do it with a rendered TIFF, and have an intricate set of actions that I run in the Image Processor Pro. It's a mess, and you don't want to know.
The frustrating part is how to action ACR. I just can't figure it out. It'll work, and then I have to change some setting and the action stops working. I suspect you need a script, but so far I haven't found any.
So I've come to a compromise: I first process to TIFF in a temp folder, then I bulk open them in ACR to sharpen, then a second process to finish up.
For less critical files I have a sharpening action that comes close, involving edge masks and blend ifs, using smart sharpen which tends to preserve edges better than unsharp mask, and with less accumulation of noise.
Bottom line: I'm also very interested in further comments to this. BTW, I recently bought Lightroom 4, so maybe there is a posibility using that in a mixed workflow.

  • CS6 - Camera Raw 7.1 won't open Nikon D7100 RAW files anymore

I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 installed on it.
I use CS6 and a few days ago, I started having trouble when loading files (JPEG & RAW files via Camera Raw). If I loaded more than two or three files, it would crash Photoshop. I tried loading JPEG directly into Photoshop, and it would still crash after 2 minutes. I tried restarting PS, reset my settings to default, restart my PC, and still the problem persisted. I checked the RAM and scratch disks, etc, there was no change with it. I decided I would reinstalled CS6. I did and now Photoshop works perfectly. I can even load JPEG via Camera Raw and it works without crashing. But then, my RAW files won't load via Camera Raw. I have the latest one from what I saw on Adobe's website  - Version 7.1.0.354. Others listed are DNG converter but I don't need that.
The RAW files I am trying to open are from a Nikon D7100 camera and before, those same files would open with Camera Raw 7.1.
Can someone please help me out on this. I am a bit desesperate cause I urgently need to edit files on Camera Raw because all my settings are saved on this.
When I open a raw file, this is the message I get:

In any event, Kathleen, you should NOT be using that obsolete ACR 7.1 version.  Besides, the Nikon D7100 is not supported by that version, as you have already been correctly told.
Update to ACR 8.6 for CS6 ASAP.
Going through the Help menu in Photoshop CS6 (Help > Updates) will/should update you automatically.  If for some reason, the auto updater fails, here's the link to the ACR 8.6 manual install:
    Windows
    CameraRaw_8_6_Installer.zip
One should never be using anything but the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR).
Even if you were using a camera supported by your obsolete version, you are leaving a lot of image quality on the table now.  The rendering of the more recent versions of ACR is demonstrably superior, starting with 7.4.
It is a shame to be using a decent camera—even if it's not a top of the line Nikon—and be in effect trashing some of its image quality.  Really.

  • File appearence not the same in PS CS4, LR2 and Camera RAW

I've just noticed that files as displayed in Lightroom 2 or in Camera RAW, when opened in Photoshop CS4 have a different appearence. In Photoshop the file appears much flatter and with considerably less saturation and dynamic range. When you compare the files beside each other in RAW and in Lightroom, they look the same. I have tried exporting the files to Photoshop from Lightroom using the "open with Lightroom Edits" and Edit a Copy and Edit the original, but the results are the same. After editing a photo in Photoshop and saving it back into Lightroom, the photo appears very saturated in the Lightroom or in Camera RAW. I don't know how long this has been this way, but now that I hace noticed it, it is driving me nuts.
    Thanks for your help
    Steve

Christopher thank you so much for responding and you have pinpointed the problem. The problem was the color settings. Color settings were set to sRGB and when I changed it to ProPhoto RGB Photoshop rendered file as it appears in the files in Lightroom and Camera RAW. I shoot in ProPhotoRGB and that seems to be why the images looked so flat when imported using sRGB.
Thanks for taking the time to help
