Camera Raw 6.0 (and Lightroom 3) extra slow, what's happening ?

Hi,
I'm having a very annoying issue with both CR 6.0 and LR 3 which is a very slow responsiveness in the photo previews.
A month ago, I was using Windows XP SP3 32bit on my machine (Intel Core Duo Q6600 (4x2.57Ghz cores) - 4Gb RAM). I had Photoshop CS4 with Camera Raw 5.x and Lightroom 2. Everything was very smooth.
Then, I moved to Windows Seven 64bit and CS5 with CR 6 and LR 3.
Now, I have exacly the same issue I had before bying my current 4 core PC, which is :
in Camera Raw, even scrolling the left thumbnails part is extremely slow (rendeing of image thumbnails), and appying the slightest change of a slider (even basic ones) takes about a second and sometimes two seconds to be applied to the image preview. Quite painful to use !
Same applies to adjustments and thumbnails in LR 3.
The thing is, the behaviour occurs even with  Canon EOS 300D RAW files which are only 6 Megapixels !
I didn't try to go back to LR2 and CS4 to check yet, but well, looks quite surprising since LR3 was supposed to be a lot faster and responsive.
As it is a clean install, I have the latest set of video drivers (it's a ATI Radeon X4800).
Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do to fix this ?
Thanks !

And, does Lightroom use the same internal 8bi plugin file to do the processing or do I have tu update Lightroom separately to get the responsiveness back ?
I don't know what they did, but I assume they rewrote some of the code which deals with some of the new process calculations and previewing, to be more processor-efficient.
Lightroom doesn't use the plug-in, as far as I know. I'd guess that would need a separate update. I haven't got it. You could tell us if it's any faster.

  • D7100 support in Camera Raw plug-in and Lightroom

When will D7100 be supported cameras in Camera Raw plug-in and Lightroom

If Adobe have managed to get their hands on a copy, there's a vague chance it might make the LR 4.4 final release which is expected soon (it's currently in RC, but sometimes extra camera's get added).  Other than that, you'll be waiting on the next release I'm afraid.  They don't generally pre-announce camera support.

  • Difference in Camera Raw 7.2 and Lightroom 4.2

Camera Raw 7.2 seems to have introduced a colour management issue since the Adobe Standard camera profile is no longer present in Camera Raw 7.2, whereas it still appears in the Lightroom 4.2 version.
This means that raw files exports from Lightroom 4.2 to Photoshop CS6 as an external editor get converted from Adobe Standard (the Lightroom default) into one of the ACR presets in Camera raw resulting in a marked colour shift.
Since it does not appear possible to select the profile being used by Camera Raw on the fly when using Photoshop as an external editor from within Lightroom then this cannot be corrected.
The only solution seems to be to define a default profile such as Camera Standard v4 in Camera Raw and ensure that all images in Lightroom are assigned this profile when importing so that the colour remains consistent when editing in Photoshop.
The two dialogs are shown below.
This did not appear to be an issue in earlier versions of Camera Raw (at least, not on my old MBP with CS5 and LR3), so why has the Adobe Standard profile been removed and how can we select a different profile when using Photoshop CS6 as an external editor in Lightroom 4.2 in order to maintain colour consistency?

Did you perhaps delete or un-install anything related to Adobe lately? ACR and LR shuld be seeing the exact same set of DNG profiles unless things have been removed or moved. You could try downloading the most recent version of DNG Converter 7.2 and do an install. This should replace all DNG profiles current with ACR 7.2.

  • Differences between Camera RAW 6.4 and Lightroom 3.4

    Hello,
I just installed the Lightroom 3.4 update and the Photoshop Elements/Camera Raw 6.4 update. I always thought the underlying RAW-engine was the same, but is that true? I have a Canon CR2-RAW file. When opening it into Camera Raw 6.4 the result differs from the result I get with Lightroom 3.4. In Camera RAW a relatively large part of the picture is colored red because of clipping in the highlights. When opening the same picture in Lightroom, only a very small part is clipping. The settings (Exposure/Recovery etcetera) are exactly the same.
Also, the histograms of the picture differ from eachother.
    Who can help?
    Igor

Lightroom actually uses four color spaces:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3415073
But don't confuse 'Color Space' with 'Camera Profiles' – You can't change the color space in LR, and do not want to! The 'Camera Profiles' provided in LR are the 'in-camera' equivalents (Camera Standard, Faithful, Landscape, etc) and Adobe's Standard. Some more information here on Camera Profiles:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/358016?tstart=0
The differences you are seeing between LR and ACR are real, but if you set the PSE color space to Adobe RGB this should be minimal. If this is not acceptable then your only option is a full upgrade to PS CS5 or PS CS5 Extended, which supports ProPhoto RGB profile. PSE does not!
Has your monitor been calibrated using hardware monitor calibrator for ~100 cd/m2 @ 6500K? If NO, STOP and go get one! If YES, read on. I personally have never liked the results using LR Camera Profiles with my Canon DSLRs (300D, 600D, 5D MKII). You can create custom develop presets using one or more of the available LR camera profiles, and they might work very well for you. You will need to shoot a standard subject, compare screen image to live subject real-time, make adjustments, and save as a new preset. Then you should be able to get pretty close for that one (1) subject type! I use the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport to create custom camera profiles with each of my camera bodies for Daylight, Cloudy and Tungsten lighting. With over 35 years of color darkroom experience the difference to my eyes is like night and day!

Eric, it's been a few days since the release of LR 5.3 and ACR 5.3, and I cannot download ACR 5.3 via Help>Updates, as is recommended. LR was able to acknowledge that an update was available within hours of its availability, but my copy of CS4 Extended (as part of Production Premium) hasn't yet.
Is there a delay in providing automatic updates through Help>Updates, or could there be a problem with my copy of CS4 Extended?
I would appreciate any assistance given with this, as I prefer the automatic download process, compared to the additional steps necessary when downloading the installer.

I'm sure there will be support for the camera eventually. But Adobe never announces that information in advance. It's possible that it could be added to the 8.7 final release and to the next update of Lightroom. But that depends on the timeline and if the engineers were able to get the camera in time to create profiles. You'll just have to wait and see.

  • Is codec 1.18 compatibile with Camera Raw 6.7 and Photoshop CS5.1?

I'm planning my purchase of a D7100, and would like to understand the software updates that would be required to process raw files in Photoshop. My current software is: Photoshop CS5.1, Camera Raw is 6.7, Codec 1.12, and Windows 7.  The Adobe website indicates that I need to upgrade the codec to 1.18. I'm OK with that. But, will that codec work with the versions of camera raw and Photoshop that I currently have?

I'm pretty sure that's not required for adobe camera raw to work and yes i agree with your post 5, as the nikon d7100 camera raw files require camera raw 7.4 and
since photoshop cs5 only is compatible to camera raw 6.7, photoshop cs5 won't open those d7100 files unless you use the 7.4 dng converter to convert your raw
    files to dng copies.
supported cameras and required versions of camera raw:

    Hi,
when i update camera raw from 6.5 to 6.6 the preview can`t give me right preview after 1 adjustment in camera raw.Image apears like when we open it in camera raw and the first few seconds with the yellow exclamation mark.
Months ago the only solution i found after several reinstals of phoshop, was to turn back to camera raw 6.5.
Now im trying beta bridge cs6 and problem come back for me again.
    I use Nikon D3x with 14 bits ~49MB .nef files with Windows 7 64 bits .
Is any one have same problem? And why only in 6.6 (and new camera raw 7.0) and not in 6.5?
    Thanks

  • Pentax K-x calibration with Camera Raw 3.1, and calibration updates

The Pentax K-x will save its raw files in either DNG (Adobe) format, or PEF (Pentax) format. Until Camera Raw 3.1 was released, I had my K-x writing DNG files, since there was no support in Apperture for PEF files. With Camera Raw 3.1, the K-x is now explicitly included, so that I could switch to PEF format.
My initial sense after doing that was that the PEF files were coming in darker than the DNG files had. But when I switched back to DNG, those were darker than I thought they should be, too. Since I had DNG files that had been processed with Camera Raw 3.0, I went back and made new versions, processing those with Camera Raw 3.1. Those, too, were much darker than the same files processed with the earlier raw developer. For examples, this picture is from a K-x DNG master processed with Camera Raw 3.0, while this picture is from the same master, reprocessed with Camera Raw 3.1. I've embedded the histograms shown in the inspector in each. Each of those has no adjustments applied. The JPEG image produced in camera (I shoot Raw+JPEG) is much closer to the brighter 3.0 image than the darker 3.1 image.
I've seen one other report of similar behaviour with K-x images in here, but that took the approach that the solution was to revert to Camera Raw 3.0, for now, at least. I hate to move backward, particularly if it locks me out of any future updates. So, does Apple have a history of recalibrating cameras that they've already released Raw support for? Might this change in a future Camera Raw update, or is this likely to be what they alway render for the K-x?
I can get the new style images looking okay (in fact, they seem to have better noise characteristics) with a good deal of adjustment, but not if I confine my adjustments to the Raw Processing brick. There, Boost and Hue Boost are both maxxed out by default, already. If I add adjustments in the exposure brick, and maybe a few others, I can probably get a general set of adjustments that will work as a default for this camera, but how common is it to have to do that?

Aperture 3 mostly seems to work fine for me, at the moment. There were some issues with importing my iPhoto Library that I've mostly worked out, and some quirks that were fixed by the 3.0.1 update. I'm not saying it's all better, but it's not the doom that one might imagine reading some of the threads here, either.
I only had the trial version of Aperture 2, though. I only got the K-x in late December, and before that, I had no need for raw processing. The software Pentax supplies is UGLY, though, and iPhoto wasn't cutting it, so I tried the Aperture 2 trial and the Lightroom 3 beta. I concluded that I much preferred Aperture to Lightroom, but I wasn't going to buy Aperture 2 when all the speculation was that Aperture 3 was right around the corner, or not coming at all. Since my Aperture 2 trial had run out, it wasn't a hard choice to buy Aperture 3 as soon as it came out. I do find I use the editing brushes more than I imagined I would, and I'm very happy that it now directly supports my camera - I've switched to shooting PEF raw instead of DNG raw.

Well, I managed to locate and download both the ACR 5.2 and the DNG 5.2, but it was a bit of a challenge. I have a couple of comments regarding the DNG installation.
As a sometime OS beta tester, I have developed a habit of keeping C:\ for the operating system only. When a new OS or beta is issued, I just format C: and install the new OS. I try to keep applications off C:. It is hard, though, with all the default installations. It would be nice to have the option to install DNG.exe in my applications partition.
My workflow involves importing NEF's from the memory card to a folder, and at the same time converting those NEF's to DNG's and putting them in a different folder in a different partition. Both these NEF's and DNG's are archived. A copy of the DNG's are used as working images. The virtue of DNG's is that there are no sidecar files to keep track of when exporting images. Unless I really mess up, I never go back to the NEF's again. I guess that I am an "outlier" too. I guess that this is essentially the 5 - A "double DNG-only" workflow, using type 2, the native-DNG-DNG system. This is discussed in detail by Barry Pearson at http://www.barrypearson.co.uk/articles/dng/safety.htm#personal
I do like the camera profiles. I previously have used the Fors script. My Nikon D200 lacked red and the Fors script fixed that. Not surprisingly, different profiles are appropriate for different image types. Is there any way of determining the methodology and reasoning between the different profiles, and what specific problems each one is designed to correct. This might permit better matching profiles to image types, with less trial and error.
