Camera RAW 8.5 Auto-correct issues?
I upgraded to CC2014, which installed Camera RAW 8.5. Now, when I attempt to use the Auto exposure correct (I know, I shouldn't depend on it, but it always used to give me a decent starting place), it always pushes the images to look about a stop or two overexposed. Is anyone else experiencing this? It really feels as though the algorithm has changed.
Here is a manual install process for ACR 8.5: http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/camera-raw-applictions-cannot-updated.html
After doing this, you’ll also want to install the DNG Converter 8.5 to update all the camera profiles and lens profiles. Get the DNGC from here: http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates

Camera Raw 6.5 - Lens Corrections
Hello: I know a 50mm lens is more commonly used for portrait shots but I like that I can be "POSITIONED CLOSER" to the subject when using a 35mm lens. Camera Raw 6.5 >Lens Corrections >Profile Make and Model and Profile, recognizes both of my lenses. My question is . . . can Camera Raw 6.5 "PROFESSIONALLY" eliminate the "distortion advantage" a 50mm lens has over a 35mm lens or am I still better off using the 50mm lens ? Thank-you, MLR
Rick McCleary wrote:
A lens does not have perspective.
Perspective is a function of the distance from viewer to subject.
Perspective is completely independent of lens, camera, or the clothes you're wearing; it's determined only by the point in space from which a subject is viewed.
Perhaps technically correct but not practically relevent...
While it's true that the "perspective" is dictated on the distance from camera to subject, in practical terms if you fill the frame with the exact same subject size, the viewpoint (and hence the "perspective") will be different...
As a result a full frame face shot with a 35MM vs a 50MM lens will indeed have a different perspective. As indicated by the OP, a face will elongate with a full frame shot of a face taken with a 35MM lens vs a longer lens. This is the practical impact of focal length. The longer the lens the more confessed the perspective.
And this has zero to do with "lens distortions" which are a technical defect of the optical properties of a lens such as barrel distortion, CS and vignetting.
The lens dictates the point of view of the image…a wide angle lens will have a forced perspective while a longer lens congresses the perspective. ACR can correct for barrel distortion, CS and vignetting but nothing relating to perspective. -
Camera Raw 8.7.1 color issues
After the recent camera raw update to 8.7.1 I have noticed some pretty bad color shifts between camera raw and photoshop cs6. The colors in camera raw look very saturated and then when moving into photoshop the saturation shift is pretty dramatic. I never had these issues before the update. I have attached a screenshot illustrating the color issue. I am working on a very good monitor ( NEC PA 242W ) and it is color calibrated using NEC Spectraview calibration system. I have double checked my color setting in photoshop and camera raw to make sure I was viewing the same color space. I am just wondering if this is maybe a bug in the update and others are experiencing the same issues or if I am just missing something.
I would also add that I am using the Creative Suite CS6 and not CC. If that makes a difference. Thanks ssprengel for the suggestions and running a side by side yourself. I went through all my settings and applied your suggestions and did a side by side each time. I even uninstalled the entire creative suite on my system then reinstalled and updated and I still get the same outcome. It was fine yesterday with the previous version of ACR. It seems like the updated version is not showing the image preview in any color space. When I switch the color space in the workflow options the histogram changes but it doesn't seem to affect the preview window. And yes the preview button was checked on it was just when I was using the screen grab tool in windows it took focus away from the application so that is why the settings appear grayed out. I have attached more screen grabs below illustrating all my settings. Also here is some system info if anyone out there has a similar setup and would be willing to test.

Camera Raw 4.6 Color Conversion Issues
I'm using CS3. In the Camera Raw 4.6 import window the color looks great. When I get the image into Photoshop the color looks horrible. I know it's the color profile that Raw is assigning. My question... is there a way to disable the color profile conversion coming from Camera Raw?
I've always had great results without using profiles and now this alters my color. I've even tried to go in and force the image to use a different color profile but at this point the damage has been done by the camera raw plugin."I've been doing professional color correction for about 15 years and know how to use the programs without the use of color profiles."
You're always using profiles no matter what, both a source and and destination for everything from your monitor to working RGB, CMYK and Lab to output profiles for proofing and print.
You need good profiles to define the hardware devices and color spaces. Without them, it's all only a guess.
"When I say "great color", I mean to say Photoshop doesn't adjust my color with profiles because I have profiles disabled."
There's not really a way to disable profiles in Photoshop. You can sort of turn them off, but the default profiles in your Color Settings dialog are still in effect no matter what. In fact, you can't even display in image in RGB or CMYK without at least two profile, and more often three.
Just having profile in the loop doesn't mean that Photoshop will "adjust" your colors. Photoshop will only do what you tell it to do.
"My monitor is corrected and I have no need to use profiles since I understand UCR & GCR conversion for printing."
You monitor is corrected? How? Have you calibrated it? After the calibration Photoshop needs, you guessed it, a monitor profile, in order to properly display your images. And how to you get from the RGB of your digital captures to the CMYK you need for offset? Yeah. Profiles. Even if you're using the archaic and outdated Custom CMYK to set your total ink and black generation, you are still in effect, using profiles. You are using the parameters defined there in the same way custom measurement are used in ProfileMaker to generate a custom ICC profile. It's just not as accurate.
"Also, when I have something printed somewhere I have them disable their profiles to provide true color. And I also force acrobat to use my color maps when building pdfs so my printer has no need for conversion of any kind."
How you do know you've made the right conversion for that printer. Most printer just ignore embedded profiles anyway, but including proper output profiles can enable them to display the files correctly on their calibrated screens, and for the more advanced printers, that embedded profile can allow them to use Device Link Profiles to convert your files to custom press or proofing profiles.
"My complaint was that the Camera Raw Plug-in forces me to convert to a profile with 4 possible choices. I was asking if there is a way to disable this?"
It's actually a choice of four different profiles not a profile with four choices. The choices are based on color gamut and gamma in order of increased gamut. There is no way to disable them. What would you put in their place? There are raw converters that will let you convert the raw data to any color space on output, including CMYK. Maybe that would be more appropriate for you. CaptureOne and Raw Developer are the two that come to mind, but they all use profiles.
Hell, even in the golden age of the drum scanner, scanners like the Hell 3010 without even being able to see an image on screen, used profiles, only they called them by a different name - lookup tables. Lookup tables for scanner input and characteristic lookup tables for the analog proofing system the house used.
"I found if I convert using the Adobe 1998 profile the color comes out close, I simply have to increase the saturation to return to the original optical image values. I would however like to bypass this step."
It sounds to me like you need to spend a few weeks getting up to date with the tools that are available now. Between hardware monitor calibration and custom CMYK output profiles that take into account different ink limits and black generation, you're missing out on a boatload of fun.
A lot of things have changed in prepress in the last fifteen years not the least of which is that little number called Direct to Plate. Since everone has gone DTP, the one thing that has gone by the wayside are any kind of overall proofing standards. Where you used to be able to send the same file to ten different printers and get back proofs that were extremely close, now they're all over the map. The only way to effectively deal with this is with custom profiles for the high end digital proofers that printers use today.
Sure, you still need to take into account the specifics of total ink, highlight and shadow values, but you simply can't rely on the positively ancient ink definitions in Custom CMYK to work very well for any of today's output. Unless, of course, you and your clients don't mind going through rounds and rounds of proofs. -
Lightroom VS Camera Raw 5.5 (color correction)
Hi, does somebody know if discarding the advantage of making layers of Photoshop, is the Adobe Lightroom color correction controls superiors to the CameraRaw PS Interface correction controls ??? I mean for color correction purposes is Adobe Lightroom better tan PS's camera raw interface ???? because for me both controls seem to be pretty much the same thing, does anyone know something about it ??
Thank you in advance !They seem the same because they are the same thing. Lightroom is basically an interface built around the camera raw processing core so you will get exactly the same results. The only thing really that you can do in Camera RAW that you can't in Lightroom is point curves (the interface simply doesn't expose them at the moment), which are almost never needed in raw conversion, except if you do special effects. I almost never use Photoshop anymore as Lightroom basically does all I need.
P.S. the latest version of camera RAW is 5.6! Lightroom is at 2.6. The last number corresponds not by accident. -
Camera raw update 3.2 create issues with panasonic square LX3 raw
Hi everybody,
since I've installed the last camera raw update(ie 3.2), my square raw from my panasonic LX3 are not recognised anymore by snow leopard, I can't even get a preview on any of my square raw.
As it was working perfectly before this update, is there a way to remove this update?
Can you reproduce this issue?
thanks for your attentionI have the Leica D Lux 4 and it does the same thing with my camera using 1:1 aspect ratio. I've since rolled the raw update back to version 3 and all is normal again. If you read this thread, it explains how to roll back the raw update.

Camera Raw 3.7 Auto adjust
I use CS2 and Camera Raw 3.7 for Windows XP. When I load pictures into camera raw through Bridge, the program automatically adjusts the image. How do I stop it from doing that and be able to see and work with the image as it comes out of the camera.
My problem is, I'm overexposing on purpose, but the program keeps fixing it. :-(Wow, Kristen. Way to resurrect an old post! Ramon will be pleased that you tried to do a search on the topic first, however. :)
There are 2 things being referred to here:
- The Auto Tone Adjustment does a dynamic adjustment of the white and black points and balances the tones similar to the Auto Levels command in PS. It's action depends on the content of the image. It will tend to make bracketed exposures look similar.
- Even when Auto Tone is turned off, Camera Raw still needs to "develop" the raw data. It does this initially by using the defaults that you have established. If these defaults consistently produce a non-optimum image, you can change them. Just make adjustments until the image looks better and then do a "Save New Camera Raw Defaults".
If you notice that the thumbnails in Bridge initially look "good" but then change to something else, this is Bridge initially using the small Jpeg embedded into the Raw file and then replacing it with its new, "developed" version. By changing the defaults you should be able to get close to the embedded Jpeg exposure but it will probably never match exactly. The embedded Jpeg was "developed" by the camera manufacturer inside your camera. Expecting it to match exactly with the way Adobe does things is sort of like expecting two different brands of film to produce the same image (back in the old days).
Remember that with Raw, the result is always an interpretation of the Raw converter being used. -
Auto-Correction Issue - please help...
Greetings all,
I'm new to the world of Mac and, to be honest, I'm loving it!
However, I have found a very small, but significant, irritation; when typing "IMAC" (as in Integrated Machinery Automation and Control), Pages keeps insisting that I actually mean iMac. It's driving me mad, and I can't work out what the issue is.
Please help...
PaulFruhulda,
Excellent. Problem solved, and thanks for your help. I must admit that Apple does seem to have a tendency to get a little fixated on itself, and the inability to change things like this just emphasises the point!
Thanks again,

Spelling/Auto Correct issues
All of a sudden, my phone is autocorrecting the word "as" into A's and "us" into u's. Any idea why this would happen or how to fix it? I've looked in settings to see if I can make changes to the dictionary and can't find it.
OndreaHave you tried removing the Spanish keyboard? Spell checking normally follows the keyboard being used, and if only the English one is available, your autocorrection should be English.

Scale difference between Camera Raw and Lens Correction Filter in CS6
I have the latest Camera Raw plugin (8.6.0.254). When I open an NEF file from a D800, the resulting image is 4912x7360 pixels, whether I apply distortion correction or not.
If I load the NEF file, do not apply distortion correction in Camera Raw, but then apply it via the Lens Correction Filter, the image must be rescaled to approximately 4840x7252 (some 98.53%) so that it matches the results of the Camera Raw plugin (minus the missing pixels around all four sides, of course).
Anyone else notice this (particularly in newer versions of Photoshop)? Is there a way to prevent this cropping? The amount of distortion on the lens (35mm) is minimal and, regardless of that, I would have expected Camera Raw and the Lens Correction filter to output identical images after distortion correction, since the lens profile is the same.To see if that can be replicated, we'd need to now the exact version of CS6 you're running (e.g. on Mac you should be on Photoshop CS6 13.0.6) and the exact version of your OS.

Camera Raw 8.2 in PS CS6 doesn't recognise new lens & camera profiles
I recently upgraded from PS CS5 to PS CS6 and have run the latest software updates for OSX 10.7.5 (ie PS CS6 13.05 and ACR 8.2.0.94). My old Canon 7D profiles are still available but, strangely, the camera and lens profiles I expected to see for the Canon 6D and Ricoh GR (among other late models) aren't shown in Camera Raw or PS Lens Correction Filters. Is this a known issue and/or is there a fix?
BTW - I can see some profiles were downloaded to HD:Library/Application Support/Adobe etc - were they meant to have gone someplace else?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! The Application Support location is for Camera-Raw-Installed profiles.
The Users location is for user-downloaded or user-created lens profiles. You can download community-supplied profiles with the lens-profile-downloader available at Adobe.com.
In the past, user-downloaded and user-created profiles could all be mixed into the Application Support folder and be found, but some time back, Adobe started recognizing only their installed profiles in the Application Support area and required downloaded profiles to be in the Users area. This may be what has happened in your case.
When you asked your question, you used the term Downloaded, so I think Eric Chan thought you meant non-Adobe-installed profiles and gave the folder for user-installed profiles.
If you currently have user-installed profiles mixed in with your Adobe-installed profiles in the Application Support folder—they may have an older date/timestamp, then just move them from where you found them to the Users folder location Eric mentioned.
Another wrinkle is that raw and non-raw profiles are distinct, as well, so when you’re expecting to see lenses supported, make sure you’re looking at a raw file from the camera in question, not a JPG. Adobe rarely supplies JPG-lens profiles. -
Merge to HDR Pro and Camera Raw stop working...
I have been noticing for the past few days that two aspects of PS CS6 completely stop working. Those are Merge to HDR Pro and Camera Raw 7.0. What happens is I can see a photo yet no changes take place no matter what I change, I try zooming, I try changing settings, nothing at all changes. At one point Merge to HDR Pro would not let me cancel or click okay to do anything. To solve this problem I must reboot PS. Merge to HDR Pro this problem keeps happening, with Camera Raw I have seen this issue twice so far.

Can you copy and paste camera raw filter settings for video?
I have just learned how to use the camera raw filter for color correcting my video clips. Is there a way to copy the settings for one clip and apply it to another? How do you do this?
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand, such as your platform (Mac or Win), exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop and of Bridge, machine specs, what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far, what error message(s) you receive, if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them, etc., someone may be able to help you.
Please read this FAQ for advice on how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers:

Cannot delete camera raw.8bi in Vista32 folder
Hello - a peculiar access rights problem?
I just manually updated ACR5.2 "camera raw.8bi" in the correct folder in Vista64 and in the CSPS4 64bit environment. I had no problem to overwrite the old file. Neither PS nor bridge are running.
Now the same procedure did not work in the 32bit folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats
I am admin and even after reboot with no software started except "computer" explorer to do the copying I cannot replace or delete the file "camera raw.8bi". Looking at the file access right it shows that administrators have right of full control. Yes it could be any Vista rights bug but other than this occurrence my system works well for a few weeks now. Is there a way in Vista to see if an (unknown) running program has control over a file or keeps it open?
Before I spend much time to update my knowledge of Vista file rights (just moved from XP because of the need for 64bit system) I want to check if there is a known problem related to PSCS4.
Any idea? Thanks for your time.I turned UAC off and left it off the first time I started Vista and saved myself a lot lot of hassle.
Regarding the plug-ins, there is no problem if you do it correctly. If you read the instructions, you are meant to
totally remove or delete the old plug-ins before trying to place the new versions in the correct folders.
By trying to overwrite you may ave screwed things up. You could try a system restore and start again.
