Hi All
I am having big problems opening .CR2 files from my Canon 550D.
I have got Photoshop CS3 and Elements 8, and downloaded Camera Raw 5.7 and installed it both automatically and manually. In case it may not work with CS3 I have also downloaded the trial version of Photoshop CS5.
However I still get "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file" with all of these.
Any help appreciated

Camera Raw 5.7 only works on CS4. You should use DNG Converter 5.7 to convert the new camera's images for use with your old version of Photoshop.
Although CS5 is new, it contains a dated list of supported cameras due to production schedules. Your camera should be supported when Camera Raw 6.1 arrives in a few weeks. Meanwhile DNG Converter is your only option.

I have been trying to open raw files from my new Canon Eos, 60d but elements 9 tells my they are the wrong file type, I downloaded the camera raw patch to update things and I have that, but it will not install into the program, if anyone has any idea how I can deal with this I would appreciate it. Or, does elements 10 have the update, I would buy that but I don't want to find out I am back in the same place. Does anyone else think this web site is over complecated?

ACR has limited functionality in PSE. I suggest you look at Canon's free DPP editor latest version for additional features and then convert to a 16 bit or 8 bit tiff file to work on in PSE.
If you have not installed DPP from the Canon utilities CD that came with the camera you may need to install that first and then perform the DPP upgrade. You may need to register the camera model and serial number in an account you create on the Canon site to get some of the updates. If you go to the Canon site and to the 60D product page, clilck the software and drivers tab, then select the operating system, all of the utility updates will be listed with descriptions that you can download.
ACR does not read the proprietary non-standard metadata in the CR2 file that DPP can read and change (and change again if you wish) as it is non-destructive to the original pixels. With the updated DPP you can download some lens profiles that will assist in correcting chromatic aberration of particular lenses in the available list. If not in the list you'll still have the function available manually.
In the DPP view option turn on the Tool Pallet and you'll see three tabs. RAW sets up tonality, RGB offers color changing options, LENS offers optical correction. Saving a RAW file saves the "recipe" data adjustments in that CR2 file without modifying the pixels themselves. When you convert to TIF for editing, the adjustments you made in the Tool Pallet (and other adjustments) are applied to the tif file pixels that you'll edit in PSE.
The terminology in DPP is different than PSE but if you look at the histograms in the Tool Pallet views you'll get the hang of the sliders and selections for color and tonality and your preview window will show you the effects of those and overall modifications like sharpening. I recommend if you are going to process the output of DPP just do some generic sharpening and do not use the DPP unsharp masking. That should be done in PSE after cropping and sizing the tiff image to your liking including setting the resolution. Any function that offers a pixel radius choice should always be done after setting image size and resolution so if you decide to crop and resize further you are not resizing the outline introduced by those functions.
I have DPP version 3.11.26 which added the ability to download certain lens and camera profiles as starting points.

How Camera Raw and Various Profiles Handle Transition Into Overexposure

With all the attention I've been paying to profiles lately, I have been opening a lot of images with bright blue colors (hence my recent post on trying to get better blue sky color).
One of the things I've noticed is that the transition into overexposure appears to be handled VERY differently depending on the profile chosen.
Of particular interest is an image I shot recently toward a stage where some bright blue lights were shining on the crowd and into my Canon EOS-40D's lens. I was surprised at how differently the transition into overexposure is made depending on the profile chosen.
Notably not one of the Adobe-supplied profiles handles this transition smoothly at all, showing some sharp transitions - which helps explain why I had been having such trouble with sky color.
Some examples follow (these have all been converted to sRGB for display via browser). Specifically note the area around the bright blue light in the upper-right.

For "normal" exposure levels it exactly matches the other images converted with the profile you developed before, but the hard edge (e.g., seen when the edges of the image are lightened by Vignetting Correction) is gone. Well done!
I tried it on a number of other images and found that the transition from blue sky to whited-out overexposure was indeed noticeably better, with the sky going to cyan slightly less quicky. For example, I have an evening time exposure with the sky transitioning to overexposure. I converted the image once with Adobe Standard and each of your profiles, and put an extreme Curves adjustment layer over the top to more easily see the transition. Note the color, in particular, of the sky transition into overexposure with the three different conversions, your most recent on the bottom.
You really have gotten your head around how these profiles work with Camera raw, and you do damned good work with that knowledge, Vit!
Let's review the features of this profile:
1. It matches the camera color virtually perfectly, which I for one find an excellent starting point for further Camera Raw adjustments.
2. It handles transition into overexposure IMO as well or better than the camera manufacturer's software and hardware.
3. Since you developed it to match the camera manufacturer's sRGB conversions, and THEY don't think channel clipping is acceptable if the user has chosen to convert to sRGB, it has solved the problem with channel clipping that I had seen with all the Adobe profiles when converting directly to sRGB, and has thus made the action I had been using to do a "bend the edges" conversion unnecessary.
There is nothing not to love here!
Vit, I don't know how much work is involved with making such a profile - clearly you've put some serious time into getting where you are, but would you be interested in partnering with me and selling sets of profiles with characteristics like this one to others who would like to get the best possible Camera Raw or Lightroom conversions? Why do my raws look different when I view them in Adobe Bridge/Adobe Camera Raw and Canons Digital P

Hello all,
I am sorta new to taking Raw photographs and I have been been using Adobe Bridge/Camera Raw to edit. When I take my photos (I am using a Canon t2i) I have it set to save a raw and a jpg. When I view these images in Adobe Bridge/Camera Raw I notice a clear difference in the jpg and raw (I understand the whole concept behind raw vs. jpg. so im not questioning why one looks different) It is obvious all the adjustments that were applied to my jpg. vs the natural raw. My question is: When I view the same two images in the software that came with my camera, canon digital photo professionals, the canon and raw look almost identical.... My assumption is that canon is applying the same "adjustments" to my raw as it did to the jpgs? Has anyone used these two programs and noticed this?

Can't say I'm an expert on DPP myself either. I've only run it a few times myself.
If you're seeing Photoshop freeze just by looking at the File Info tab, that's certainly not expected and you should start a tread specifically to discuss that. The forum may be able to help you get that working.
I happen to like the color my camera delivers in its embedded JPEGs (which I use to quickly review shots via IrfanView). Starting with that color in Camera Raw by default just feels very natural and integrated.
Without a specific custom profile to help you with the task, here's my suggestions for the next best thing:
1. Take an image with a range of different colors in it.
2. Open the embedded JPEG also using whatever means you have to do so.
3. Open it also in Camera Raw and make sure you're using the Camera Raw default parameters.
4. Go into the Camera Calibration tab (little camera icon), and choose the Camera Standard profile as provided by Adobe.
5. Tweak the various sliders so as to match the color between what you're seeing in the JPEG and Camera Raw.
6. Save new Camera Raw defaults.
Some notes:
Make sure you leave the White Balance on As Shot, since storing a specific white balance is probably not going to be helpful.
Test your settings and repeat the above to tweak them as needed using other images.
Keep in mind that not every application does proper color-management. IrfanView can be set up to do so, and I don't recall whether you have to tweak a default setting to make it do that or not (it's been a while).

Camera raw and bridge: no dialogue in cs3

After purchasing the Nikon D300 I had to upgrade from CS2 to CS3 as former versions of photoshop are unable to manage the RAW files (NEF) generated by the new camera.
My problem is that, even having downloaded the 4.3.1 version of Camera Raw and having installed it, there is no dialogue with bridge. I tried to reinstall CS3 as well.
This means:
- I miss the Camera Raw preferences setting (under the edit menu in bridge)
- Always in Bridge I cannot cut and paste (copy and apply) camera raw settings of one photo to others. Neither selecting the edit menu, nor with the mouse's right button.
The point is not that these and similar selections do not work, the point is that they do not even appear in the menus. The help resources, for instance, tell about a Edit > Develop Settings function that is not present in my menu.
What is wrong? Is it possible that there is any kind of conflict with Nikon capture NX?

Hi All,
Been reading this thread with interest.
I am on PC with XP, I have been using CS3 for quite a while now and both my D200 and D300 have all been working perfectly. But over the last few months I have noticed that Bridge was (a) very slow to start and (b) would suddenly come up with the "Bridge has encountered a problem and must close" message. Then it got to the stage were Bridge would not open at all and just the "Problem" message would show and then next PS3 then starting displayed the "There has been a cataclysmic Failure" message.
So I have used the original CS3 CD and uninstalled and reinstalled and got both programs working but no Camera Raw. If I click on the NEF file it goes to PS and gets the message wrong file type. All the preferences are set ok.
The other thing that happened was when I downloaded all the updates, Bridge went back to not opening and the "problem" message showing again.
After reading Xoslic message I will try to take out the registry entries and reinstall again and see if that works.
For all of you on Nikon, CS3 was working perfectly for me until just recently, so I know that it does work fine.
Hopefully I will get a soloution and let you know if it works.

PS. I also had a problem in that Lightroom 1.4 would not work either, opened ok but "lightroom has encountered a problem" message appeared and it closed down. Other people suggested that the problem lay in "Version Cue"

How do I install the RC updates to my PS CC, camera raw and Lightroom? I have downloaded the correct versions from the Lab site but I still can't open my Nikon D-610 RAW files. The site says follow on screen instructions but I have not found any. Help please.

Open pictures in Camera RAW and still have paths/clipping paths?

A big problem in Bridge is that I can not open my pictures in Camera RAW and still have my paths left. I work in a place where we get loads of product photos from many different companies and they almost always have a clipping path in it. Many of the pictures do we have to fix like colour, exposure etc and this is here Bridge comes in as the best solution to batchfix them. But now I have to take the long way through Photoshop. Is there a solution for this?, an update from Adobe or a script or something.

You do know that you can deconfigure Camera Raw from opening TIFFs and JPEGs, right?
These are the settings I've chosen. Done this way, JPEGs and TIFFs just open right into Photoshop, and their clipping paths would be intact.

I am not sure if this is an issue but Windows does not recognize the .xmp file and give it an icon with the photo's picture. On a related note, when I edited some .nef files and Windows saved it as .dng file, it too, like the .xmp file, Windows does not recognize the .dng file and give it an icon with the photo's picture.
Do I need to download something to create this icon?

PSE didn't save your file as an .xmp file. The .xmp file is not the image--that's still the .nef. The xmp file is what adobe calls a 'sidecar' file, just a record of the settings you used in the raw converter. As long as it's in the same place as the image, when you open the nef in ACR again, it will open where you left off, with the settings you chose.
If you want to save as, you have two choices:
1. Click the Open button in the raw converter window and save in the image format of your choice.
2. Use the Save button in the raw converter to create a separate DNG file, which still must be opened in the raw converter and converted to an image format for use in other programs.

Hmmm... I got the DNG Converter and ACR from the page I listed.
If you go to the DNG page at http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/ and click on Downloads (in the light gray box on the upper right) for Mac or Windows (I'll use the Windows example here because I'm on a PC right now, but it also worked from my Mac) you will go to http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3894 and then you have to click on Proceed to download and it should say filename DNG_Camera)Raw_4_4.zip and be 5.4 meg in size (If you follow the Macintosh link the filename is DNG_Camera_Raw_4_4.dmg and is 12.5MB).
However, if you go to the Camera Raw page at http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html and click on the download links under the main gray box you will only get the Camera Raw file (filename is Camera_Raw_4_4.zip at 3.3MB or Camera_Raw_4_4.DMG at 7.8MB).
Both download places list the Product name as Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter. But the filenames are different and indicate which one you are downloading.

Scale difference between Camera Raw and Lens Correction Filter in CS6

I have the latest Camera Raw plugin (8.6.0.254). When I open an NEF file from a D800, the resulting image is 4912x7360 pixels, whether I apply distortion correction or not.
If I load the NEF file, do not apply distortion correction in Camera Raw, but then apply it via the Lens Correction Filter, the image must be rescaled to approximately 4840x7252 (some 98.53%) so that it matches the results of the Camera Raw plugin (minus the missing pixels around all four sides, of course).
Anyone else notice this (particularly in newer versions of Photoshop)? Is there a way to prevent this cropping? The amount of distortion on the lens (35mm) is minimal and, regardless of that, I would have expected Camera Raw and the Lens Correction filter to output identical images after distortion correction, since the lens profile is the same.

To see if that can be replicated, we'd need to now the exact version of CS6 you're running (e.g. on Mac you should be on Photoshop CS6 13.0.6) and the exact version of your OS.

Camera Raw and Photoshop fluctuations

When I open a JPG from Camera Raw and view it in Photoshop I'm noticing that the Photoshop version, viewed at 100%, is slightly darker, viewed side-by-side, than the preview in Camera Raw, also at 100%. Both in the same color space (sRGB).
Interestingly, when I changed the color settings in Photoshop to Adobe RGB and then reprocessed the photo in Camera Raw as an Adobe RGB file and then opened it in Photoshop, the side-by-side comparison shows the Photoshop version as slightly lighter, not darker, than the version shown in the preview window in Camera Raw. Both also at 100%.
Any thoughts on the subject would be very much appreciated. Thank you. Tom

Both Camera Raw and Photoshop are using your display profile to make the image preview. If the two don't match (everything matches on my displays) I suspect your display profile is less than optimal.

Why the colors look so different betweet my Camera Raw and Bridge?

We know that after editing images in Camera Raw, thumbnails in Bridge will updated according to the new xmp files.
However, for some of my Raw files, the colors look very different in Bridge after makeing adjustments in Camera Raw, I can see more red in those phoots. But when I reopen the file in Camera Raw, all the colors are just correct.
For those photos without applying xmp files the colors looks exactly the same in Camera Raw and Bridge.
Does this means that my Camera Raw and Bridge use different color space? How can I fix this problem? Thank you

If you want help, you need to specify your platform (Mac or Windows), the exact versions of your Operating System, Photoshop, ACR plug-in and Bridge.
Also look at your Bridge preferences and tell us what you have your Thumbnail preferences set to.
Re-setting your preferences and purging the cache would also help. It could be something as simple as a corrupt cache.
Bridge is Color Managed, but it does not use a color space of its own. It applies the color space with which each image is tagged, it assigns sRGB to untagged files.
When was the last time you calibrated and profiled your monitor?
Details would help.
