Camera Raw forum FAQ

I'm a long-time user of the Camera Raw forum, which is a good quality read, frequented by plenty knowledgeable people. However, I have one problem with it:
There is one question which keeps cropping up more than any other.
This is why they created the humble FAQ, but I can't seem to find it. This is what I see:
Apparently, when you log out, the forum looks a bit more helpful, but this all changes to the above layout when I log in.
When I visit the Photoshop forum, there is an 'announcement' box across the top. This would be an excellent place to put the number 1 question from infrequent visitors.
Trouble is, I don't know if there's a moderator responsible for the CR forum, or how to go about making the FAQ (yes, there is one, albeit a bit complex) more visible. Any pointers?

The layout of the site (the theme which controls the style of each page and the titles of the various pods) is controlled entirely by Adobe's web team.
There are limits on what that theme can do, dictated by Jive's software (just as with any other hosted system such as Blogger, you can style the pages but can't change the functionality).
As operators of a hosted platform with a shared core, Jive does not do 'everything they are told to do'. It allows certain things to be customised, that's all. Your builder analogy is flawed as Jive is not simply providing labor, it's selling access to a hosted product. If you rent a car for the weekend you can ask for a child seat but can't demand it be repainted.
Hosts have no involvement with themes, topic names or user accounts, we manage the content.
MVPs are not necessarily Hosts, the MVP program is indeed an 'honorary title' in the sense there's no entrance fee or exam, but there are expert sub-groups within it (which as a normal user you cannot see) whose positions are set by very strict criteria.

  • Unfamiliar icon on Camera Raw forum page.

Wat's the story behind the Adobe Camera Raw forum using this (butt-ugly) purple icon labeled "mediaencoder"?

That's because I actually don't see any avatars at all.  I have them blocked, among other unnecessary clutter.
Anyway, I was just wondering if it was a conscious decision or just happenstance.  In any event, Adobe Admin thought it was a good question and sent it on to the powers that be.

  • Camera Raw forum announcements

There is a forum-wide announcement in the above-mentioned forum, which says that a beta is available. Meanwhile, the Overview tab has an additional (newer)  announcement that the full software is now available.
As I have Discussions set as the default tab, I'm still led to believe the beta is current (and only found out about the new software by accident). This doesn't seem a very smart/consistent way to make announcements on the new forum software.

Moderators and some employees have control over announcements. However, the moderator's are volunteers and do this in their spare time. Most employees that visit the forums do so on their own time as well. Hopefully, your post will stir one of the more knowledgeable hosts that visit the raw forum to adjust the announcement appropriately. Thanks for the heads up.

  • Adobe Camera Raw forum stickies/announcements/FAQs

This forum is starting to do my head in.  It seems that every other question is the same: why can't I open my raw files?  Sadly enough, I can see why: there's nothing in this forum which answers this basic question.
I know that people could use search if they wanted, but getting the right answer depends on choosing the right words.  It would be a lot simpler if the answer was just up there in bloody big letters.  It could be a "sticky" post at the top of the list, or an "announcement" across the top.  Where is the FAQ?  Damned if I can find it.  Isn't there an admin in this forum?
But, even if this was fixed, I'm afraid that the Photoshop forum mods will just keep dumping the same posts in here, because their users are no wiser.
What a waste of time and effort.

Upright resets cropYammer, I don't disagree that the forum structure is less than optimal. I've been hanging here a lot longer than you have and I can't count the number of times I've answered the same darn questions, over and over and over. But, I don't consider it a waste of time and effort to help people...it's just something I do.
I will say I don't like threads from other forums from the other Adobe web site: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family showing up here. I really think that other forum is a bad idea...and really diffuses the efforts of user interaction. I find that forum structure to be completely useless because all "Photoshop Family" stuff is jammed together without and real product differentiation.
But, THIS forum isn't really the place to complain about the various forums…there's a special forum for that (of course :~)

My best advice is to look at the thread topics and don't click on things that don't interest you...you can't control the actions of others, but you can control how you do or don't interact with others...

  • Camera Raw won't open certain JPG files from Bridge, others open in ACR with no problem.

Edit: This was orignally posted in the Photoshop > Macintosh forum, which I failed to realize was read only. Thanks to a PM headsup, I'm reposting it here. Thanks
I've searched the internet and the Adobe forums and cannot find a direct answer to what I'm dealing with.
The issue I am having is that Bridge CS5 (current version 4.0.5.11) will open some JPG images in Raw with no problem and others nothing happens at all. All the images come from the same source (Fujifilm Frontier SP2000) so I really don't understand why Bridge ignores some of them as being openable in RAW. For example, say this roll of film has 36 images. If I "Select All", right click, and select "Open in Camera Raw", it will open whichever it deems acceptable in RAW and nothing happens at all to the others (The RAW dialog will, for instance, only open 10 images instead of all 36, and the remaining images are not altered in any way).
I've made sure that Photoshop is prefering Adobe Camera Raw with Supported Raw Files and in Camera Raw Preferences I have the box ticked to Automatically open JPGs with Settings but nothing helps.
My work around is to one file at a time in the Photoshop Open dialog, selecting an affected JPG file and have it open them as Camera Raw instead of Jpeg.
Any ideas? It's done this for quite a while and I have no idea how to fix it.
    Thanks.

  • Cannot install camera raw 6.2

tried for help on camera raw forum but no response.
i use imac i7 and mac os 10.6.4. i have final ver of camera raw 6.1 installed and working well on photoshop CS5.
i downloaded new camera raw 6.2.  attempt to install produces:  "update not applicable".
    any help??
    thanks much
    vince

I don't know what the origin of that message is, as I don't use Lightroom, but it could be just telling you that to get the best possible integrated raw file experience you need to have Photoshop CS5 to go along with the version of Lightroom you have.
I don't know what kind of camera you're using, but it could be that installing the Camera Raw 5.7 update for CS4 might get rid of the message:

  • White Balance in Camera raw

Every time I open an image from Bridge in CS6, into camera raw the white balance always defaults  to fluorescent.  How can I change default opening to read as"shot as"?

Hi there! Because the forum you originally posted in is for beginners trying to learn the basics of Photoshop, I moved your question to the Camera Raw forum, where you'll get more specialized help.

  • Cannot view RAW files in Camera RAW in Adobe Bridge.

    I have the following installed:
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0.1 (13.0.1.3 20131024.r.34 2013/10/24:21:00:00) x64
    Operating System: Windows Vista 64-bit
    Version: 6.0 Service Pack 2
    Bridge Camera Raw v7.0.0.308
I uploaded a plugin (can't remember which one) and now cannot view any of my RAW images through Bridge.
    I have tried installing updated Camera RAW plug-ins - v8.6 = not usable as it is for WIN7 only, v 8.2 & v8.4 = doesn't work
Which plugin must i upload and where do I find one to download?

  • Camera RAW 5.6 - Filmstrip Does Not Appear

I'm having an interesting issue with Camera RAW 5.6. In everything I have found via searching, the preview flimstrip is supposed to automatically appear when multiple RAW files are opened. In my case, this does not happen. Instead, I see each image one at a time, only viewing the next one if I chose to close or fully open the file.
When I was using XP Pro SP3 x86, the filmstrip worked as it was supposed to. Now, on Windows 7 Ultimate x64, it never appers. I haven't been able to find any other information on this issue so I'm assuming it's just me. Any suggestions?

There is a reason for this but I can't check it at the moment.
I suggest you ask in the Camera Raw forum.

  • Where To Install Camera Raw Plugin

The oddest thing happened to me.  I solved it, but I am hoping someone can provide me with an explanation:
    1) I downloaded the lastest Camera Raw Plugin for CS3 and followed the installation instructions given at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3893.
    2) I still could not open my .dng files from bridge because I was still getting the message that I did not have the proper Camera Raw Plugin for CS3.
    3) So, I did a search for all of the Camera Raw Plugins on my computer and found one located in Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plug-Ins.
    4) So, I replaced the Camera Raw Plugin I had found in Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plug-Ins with the new one that I had downloaded from Adobe and previously placed in Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats as I had been instructed.
    5) It worked, and now I can open my .dng files from Bridge into Photoshop.  Why the discrepancy between what I was instructed to do and what actually seems to work?
    Thank you,
    Robert

Note that is your ROOT LEVEL library, NOT your user library.
That is the ONLY correct location for the Camera Raw plug-in.  You should have no other such Camera Rawplug-in anywhere else in your setup [for CS3].

  • Camera Raw 6.7

I have installed CS6 and now can no longer open my Nikon D800 files in Photoshop.
Lightroom 4 works with these files, but not photoshop CS6.
I downloaded the Camera Raw 6.7 patch. It delivers a message that it cannot apply the patch to my system
Odd that Lightroom 4 works, but Photoshop 6 does not.
    Any ideas?

Yammer, actually since the query is regarding Camera Raw. So, its better we move it to the respective forum. People might check the similar issue on that forum itself as they are expected to post the query into their respective forums like in this case Adobe Camera Raw.
Sorry, I can't understand that. Can you rephrase?
My logic is this: the Camera Raw forum is already coming down with lots of similar questions, since the launch of CS6 and the D800/5DIII. We don't need any more.
Surely, if lots of users of, say, the Photoshop forum, are failing to locate the Camera Raw forum to answer the same question over and over, it would make more sense to leave an answer (or pointer) there, rather than move them all to a location where they are not looking, would it not?
I'm not going to argue about this, I'm just trying to provide a bit of common sense.

  • Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), Jpeg Files and Metadata

I have been using Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) with my Canon EOS 30D, an 8 MP camera, for a while now. I would make non-destructive changes to the raw file (.CR2) in ACR where the changes would be stored in an adjoining .xmp file. Jpegs of the unedited and edited camera raw files would be created so I have a before and after versions of the images that can be viewed anywhere.
Now I have a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, a 22 MP camera and the raw files are much larger. I’m looking at using camera raw on jpeg files for some for my more casual photo shoots in order to save disk space. From what I have read, I can use ACR on jpeg files and that the changes would be stored in the metadata in the jpeg file. Is there a way for the changes to be stored in an adjoining .xmp file so that the original jpeg file is not modified, much like it is done with the .CR2 files?
I am using Adobe Photoshop CS5 on a Windows 7 machine. All software is up-to-date.
Also, I have found that Adobe’s camera raw handing is different than the raw handling of the photos using Canon’s software (DPP). Is there a way to make ACR closer to what Canon’s software does?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Probably not going to happen.
I agree, Canon's color is better than Adobe's in general - I just didn't know how good the Camera Standard profile might be for your particular camera.  I had hoped maybe they'd made it a very close match.
Some time ago I got a very nice genius-level Camera Raw forum member named Vit to make me a custom profile that exactly matches the Canon color for my 40D, even to the point of emulating the way Canon fits the entire gamut of the captured image into the sRGB color space, so I'm more than happy.
Others might tell you that you're silly for wanting the color to match, but I understand completely your position - if you do get that kind of feedback just ignore it and push on.
Once you've set up a default to use Camera Standard, you may well be able to tweak the dozens of color controls to bring the Adobe default into line with the Canon color.  I did that once before getting my special 40D profile, comparing embedded raw file JPEGs with the Camera Raw preview display with a variety of images - it was tedious but effective.
    Best of luck.

  • Missing Lensprofiles from SONY and ZEISS in Camera Raw

    Hello,
A few months ago I switched from Canon to Sony and Carl Zeiss and ever since I am missing some lens profiles in Camera Raw.
I'm a picture editor and of course miss this opportunity of pre-correcting the lens profiles in the RAW development. I can not create the profiles themselves, like I have already been advised to do by an adobe employee. Now I have been waiting for the latest update and I also changed to PS CC.
Unfortunately, I still miss these camera profiles: SONY SAL-500F40G, SONY SAL-300F28G2, SONY SAL-100M28, 135F18Z Zeiss, Zeiss 85F14Z, 24F20Z Zeiss, Zeiss 1635Z. I hereby would like to respectfully ask for these profiles included in Camera Raw. My entire image processing stands and falls with the RAW development. If I have to make cuts in the beginning, all following workflow suffers.
As a premium provider of image editing software, you should not only follow the mainstream (Canon and Nikon), but also the "niche supplier" (SONY and ZEISS).
I would appreciate any information about that topic very much!
