You are hopelessly behind the times. If you want to open the files directly, you need a new Photoshop, which would be most efficiently done by signing up for the Creative Cloud Photography plan.

  • Canon 5d Mark ii and Camera Raw in CS3.

Bought a new camera, Canon 5d Mark ii. Cannot open the RAW files. Can open them from my older Canon camera. Not sure which Camera Raw comes with CS3. Not sure if I have to upgrade. If I do need to upgrade to at least CS4 that may be doable. Otherwise OR until I do, am I better off just using the Canon software for now? Advice please!!!

That camera was supported for the first time in ACR 5.2, which ran with Photoshop CS4.
If you are not planning on upgrading your Photoshop to CS4 or CS5 right away, you need to download the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter version 5.7 to convert your raw Canon files to DNG raw files first.  Then you will be able to open those DNGs in Camera Raw in CS3.
You should update your ACR in CS3 to version 4.6 ASAP, though.  ACR 4.0 is woefully obsolete and nobody should be running that old version.
Be aware, however, that you will be leaving a lot of image quality behind by staying with that old version of ACR in CS3.  Camera Raw 5.7 (the current and last version for CS4) is light years ahead of ACR 4.x.   ACR 6.1 (currently a Release Candidate) which requires CS5 is even a bit better than ACR 5.7.
ACR 4.x is really old technology.  If you can afford that camera, you most certainly can afford to upgrade to CS5.

  • DNG Converter/ Camera Raw for CS3 (D3000)

    1. I have a Nikon D3000
    2. I have CS3
    3. I took 3 graduation pictures and  set of engagement pics in RAW
    4. I am trying to convert them so I can open them up in CS3 because naturally Raw files cannot open up in CS3.   I downloaded MULTIPLE DNG convertors. From recent to not so recent. On all of them I am able to see the menu....but right when i click select files ALL of my .nef pics are grey and unclickable.
PLEASE HELP ME. I am miserable using other peoples computer.
SIDENOTE: I tried to also put camera raw on CS3 . I put the correct version for my camera and it still didn't work. My main goal is to use Camera Raw for editing.
    once again...please help

To add to what Noel has said...
The DNG Converter is a standalone program that you run off Start -> All Programs -> Adobe -> DNG Converter.
The DNG Converter operates on entire folders at once so there are no thumbnails involved.
Once you have converted all the NEFs to DNGs in a particular folder using the DNG Converter, you could still have problem seeing the NEFs if your camera RAW is too new, as it sounds like you might have done.
To fix this, please re-install (manually copy?) the Camera RAW plug-in back to the highest version number that is compatible with CS3, which would be 4.6:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows
Check to see what version of Camera RAW you have by going into Photoshop and choosing Help / About Plug-ins... / Camera RAW (and make sure there is only one instances of Camera RAW listed).
Unless you update to CS4 or CS5 that can work with the NEFs, directly, when viewing the folder in Bridge, you will always see gray NEF icons for the original RAW files, but you should see thumbnails for the DNGs you've converted.
If might be good that when you convert NEFs to DNGs that you put the DNGs into a subfolder of the NEFs, so you don't have half your thumbnails being gray NEFs.

  • I can't open canon .CR2 files in Adope camera raw in CS3

When i want to open my .CR2 file from my Canon camera 40D into bridge or photoshop CS3 it does not open it and it can't recognize the file in some way.  My computer is working with windows vista.  I really need help as i dont know why it is not doing it.  Thanks

Distilling the Tech Note down, essentially you can't open .CR2 files in CS3.  I think CS4 is the first version that has .CR2 compatibility.  One option that doesn't involve upgrading to CS4 is to download the free Adobe DNG converter and convert your .CR2 files to .dng.  Then you can open them in CS3.
No, that isn't right.  The Canon 40D was supported in at least the last version of Camera Raw for CS3.  There are a few things you need to verify.
    1.  In Photoshop, go to Help/About Plug-Ins and click on Camera Raw in the list.  It will tell you what version you have installed.  You should have Camera Raw 4.6 listed, and it should only be listed once.  If there are additional listings then you have a problem.  Camera Raw will now work.
    2.  Get the download instructions from the Adobe download website and make sure Camera Raw is installed in the right folder.  It must be that specific folder, and there can be no other versions of Camera Raw in the Adobe file structure.
    3.  Are you able to see your raw images in Bridge?  If not, then there is something wrong with your installation.
Check these things out and make sure everything is set up properly.  Then maybe we can help you further.

  • When opening camera raw in cs3, cannor read document

when trying to open camera raw in cs3, it keeps telling me that it cannot read document

There could be a million reasons why what you describe could be the case.
I'm going to guess at one of them:  Your camera is newer than the version of Camera Raw you are running.
Could you please express yourself more clearly so we can try to help you without guessing?
    Thanks.

    merci a tous. vincent

    Bonjour,
    Courage ;0

  • Can't open Nikon D300 raw files in camera raw in CS3

Is there a solution to this?

The D300 is supported in CS3.  The last version of Camera Raw that is compatible with CS3 is 4.6.  If you have it installed correctly you should have no problems.  Your camera was supported in at least one previous version, I didn't check real closely.  But you should install and use 4.6.

  • Unable to open image in camera raw in CS3

I have CS3 and I'm unable to open images in camera raw.  I updated to 4.6 but it hasn't helped, and I've tried suggestions such as "open as" and then "formats" and choosing "camera raw"...still doesn't work.  Adobe is not able to help me over the phone due to the older version of Photoshop...any thoughts or help?  Thanks so much.

A critical piece of information would be what camera model the RAW images you're trying to open are from.
Each model camera must be supported specifically in Camera RAW.  If your camera is newer than the latest ACR version available for your Photoshop version then you'll be unable to open the RAW files in ACR.
    Three solutions are:
Use the latest version of the free DNG Converter from Adobe Updates < http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates > to convert each RAW file to a DNG and then that DNG will be openable in the older ACR version.  You may need to change the ACR-version compatibility setting in the DNG Converter.  This solution is free but doubles your storage space if you keep your original RAW plus the DNGs.
Buy Lightroom (which is less than half the price of Photoshop) and continue to use your older Photoshop with it.  The adjustments you do in LR are the same as you'd be able to do in ACR (actually more because the newest version of LR and ACR have more adjustments)
Upgrade to or buy the latest version of Photoshop, depending on your upgrade availability.
I personally have both Lightroom and Photoshop and use LR 90% of the time.

  • Camera Raw for CS3

I have just installed CS3 Bridge on my Windows PC system. I already have Photoshop CS2 and Bridge CS2 installed.
How can I tell if I have the latest version of Camera Raw installed in CS3 Bridge and Photoshop CS2?
    This is not helpful:
"How do I know that Adobe Camera Raw is installed correctly?
A: For Photoshop CS2 and CS3 customers the most efficient way to ensure that you have the latest Camera Raw update installed correctly is to choose the Updates option from the help menu. The correct version is displayed when you pick its name and see its about box. If "Camera Raw" is not in this list, you have not installed it correctly."

    Just download it.
Even if you were able to locate it on the disc it would be an older version. Be sure to follow the installation instructions. The plug-in has to be in the precise folder outlined in those instructions. If that folder doesn't exist for some reason, it will be necessary for you to create the folder(s).

    > but the part about DNG has convinced me to dive deeper in it and give it a go
When working in a Bridge/Camera Raw/Photoshop workflow, I tend to ingest the actual native raw files, do initial selects and gross edits and basic metadata work via templates and THEN do the conversion to DNG. I'll use the DNG as my working files and the original raws as an archive. I tend to do this more with studio shoots. I tend to use Lightroom when I'm on the road.
When working in Lightroom first, I tend to ingest and convert to DNG upon ingestion (when in the road working on a laptop) while using the backup copyusually working on a pair of external FW drives one for working DNG files and 1 for BU of the original raws. Then, when I get back to the studio I make sure I write to XMP and export the new shoot as a catalog and import into my studio copy of Lightroom. Then I'll also cache the newly imported images in Bridge as well so I can get at the image either in Bridge or Lightroom.
It's a bit of a chore now since I do work in Camera Raw a lot (well, DOH, I had to to do the book!) but I also keep all my digital files in a Lightroom catalog which is now up to about 74K...
Then, depending on what I'll need to do, I'll either work out of LR or Bridge/Camera Raw...
If I'm doing a high-end final print, I generally process out of Camera Raw as a Smart Object and stack multiple layers of CR processed images...if I'm working on a batch of images I'll work out of Lightroom since the workflow seems to suit me better.
In either event, I've found DNG to be better than native raws with sidecar files.

  • Nikon D3S Camera RAW for CS3

Just obtained a Nikon D3S and I am having difficulty finding the link to download Camera RAW into CS3

For CS3 I think Camera Raw 4 would be the relevant one and your camera does not seem to be on the list:
    http://www.adobe.com/special/photoshop/camera_raw/DNG_4.6_Converter_ReadMe.pdf
DNG Converter should be available here:

  • I can not down load camera raw into cs3.

can not download my camera raw files into cs3

If you have a camera that is newer than what was supported in that version then you will either have to upgrade to the current version of Photoshop or else you can use the free DNG converter to create digital negative copies of your raw images. Those will open with what you have now. There will not be any more updates for Camera Raw for Photoshop CS3. That version is out of production and is no longer being supported or updated by Adobe.

  • Adobe Camera Raw in CS3 is having problems with the RAW files from my Canon 5D Mark II

Adobe Bridge will import the CS2 raw files from the camera card in m Canon 5D Mark II but it will not create thumbnails nor will it convert them to DNG. I want to update the raw reading software but the update page indicates that it only updates into CS4. Will I have to upgrade to CS4 before I can import from my new camera?
    ML

The dng converter does indeed work but it adds an extra step to the workflow. Raw files from my Canon 40D are exported and converted to dng in Bridge in one step. Now I must add the extra step of using dng converter. Can I upgrade Adobe Bridge's raw capacity so that I can import from my new camera in the same efficient way? I would prefer to do this without buying CS4.
    thank you -- ML

  • What ver. of CS3 Camera Raw will work with the Nikon D5000?

Just upgraded my Nikon D100 with a D5000. Now PSCS3 will not reconize my raw images. Is there anything I can do other than spend money on a new version on PS?

There is not, nor will there ever be, a version of Camera Raw for CS3 that will open your Nikon NEF files directly.  It will be necessary for you to download the latest DNG converter and create DNG (Digital Negative) copies of your raw files.  Then you will be able to open those DNG files with ACR in Photoshop CS3.  The last version of camera raw that was created for Photoshop CS3 was version 4.6.

  • After installing cs4, camera raw no longer available in cs3

New computer, mac pro 2.8, 10.6.6. On previous and other macs I work on, I'm able to open jpgs and tifs in camera raw with the cs3 or cs4 bridge. Have current versions of camera raw for each app, but cs3 bridge no longer has options for opening jpgs, tifs, or dng files in camera raw. I still have prefs for camera raw in cs3 bridge. Do I need to build new cache for cs3 alone? Have newest DNG converter, would this have screwed up my cs 3? Any ideas?

Actually fixed major problem by purging cache, except dng files that I could open before in cs3, now only recognizable in cs4. Things could be worse, I suppose.
