Camera Raw is blacked out

Terrific. You ask Adobe for help and they dump you into an empty forum. Great customer service guys. Anyway, my problem is I have just installed CS5 onto a new iMac and the operating fields in Camera Raw, when opened from within Bridge, are blacked out. Someone has suggested I have to reinstall my OS, ie. erase two days of installation work, which is hardly helpful. Better off finding an alternative to Adobe. The frustration is this work is my profession. A professional tool shouldn't throw up this sort of glitch with no customer support.

Many thanks for your response. I have fixed the problem by reinstalling my operating system; thankfully being a Mac it didn't require reinstalling all my applications, or losing any data. I am pretty convinced, having run a few tests on other machines in my office that MacKeeper is the culprit and I have made sure it has been deleted off everyone's machines. I would recommend to everyone with MacKeeper to do the same.

open in camera raw is greyed out in bridge cs5.1. how do I activivate this feature?

The D600 was first supported in Camera Raw 7.3 which is only compatible with CS6 and later - not CS5 unfortunately.

  • Camera Raw Preferences greyed out in Bridge 4.05.11

I have recently downloaded an update for Adobe Camera Raw / PS CS5 via automatic updates and now I cannot open raw files via Adobe Bridge (V4.05.011). When I double click the NEF file In Bridge it tries to open in PS but I get "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".  Camera Raw Preferences in Bridge is grayed out and Camera Raw plug-in does not appear in PS Help/About Plug-ins.
I have checked that Camera Raw Plug In is still in the program files: common files>adobe>plug-ins>cs5>file formats.
I have tried updating via the Updates in both Adobe Bridge and PS CS5 and it tells me there are no updates.
I am using Windows XP 32 bit, PS CS5 V12.0.4
I have been trying to fix this problem for days and would really appreciate some help.

Bridge: Apply all CS3 updates in order, bottom to top.
Photoshop Version CS3 (not CS3 International), Start from the bottom with Buffering Extensions, 10.0.1 update, and you can go all the way to Adobe Camera Raw 4.6
If you have a camera models beyond what's supported in 4.6 and your OSX is 10.7 or later, download the 8.7.1 DNG converter.

  • Bridge CS3 "Open in Camera Raw" unavailable (grayed out)

I am using Bridge CS3 (2.0.0.975; and Photoshop CS3) under Vista Home Premium. I have two accounts on this system (one administrative "root," and my primary limited user account).
My problem: under my primary account (even if I switch it to administrative), unless I open raw files with ACR, I cannot access "Open in Camera Raw..." under the file menu (as it is grayed out and inaccessible while trying to open jpg files, etc.). However, using the administrative account I can access/use the command. I tried uninstalling CS3, switching my primary to administrative and reinstalling using my primary account, but it still appears grayed out and I still cannot open files using the abbrev "Ctrl+R." Note, I can open jpg files in ACR, but this must be the default for all jpg files not ones that I select to open.
Also, under preferences>Labels, I need to uncheck the "Require the Control Key to Apply Labels and Ratings" every time Bridge is restarted as it will not save from startup to startup. Any help is appreciated. --Greg

There are 3 places to check this option, 1 in Bridge preferences itself, 1 in the camera raw preferences via Bridge and the last one in the PS preferences from PSCS3 itself.
They all should have a checkmark. But there are some issues with this option. You might also want to refresh the preferences with restarting Bridge an holding down option key and after doing so again check and set the prefs to your wishes.

  • Camera Raw and Black & White Pictures

I am using Potoshop Elements 7.0 and I just downloaded the latest camera raw (5.2). However, both with the old and new camera raw plug when I import black & white pictures from my Nikon D80 in NEF format I see them as colour pictures in the PSE organizer. How can I keep the original format (black and white in this case) while importing the pictures?

Your images are indeed color pictures. That's their original format. When you think you're shooting B&W, the camera built-in software just adds a flag for the camera manufacturer's raw converter to render them as B&W. ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) ignores that flag and leaves it up to you to convert the images to B&W through the method of your choice.

  • Bridge File Open in camer raw, is grayed out. Camera raw works in PS.

Why, when a raw file open in Bridge with a double click opens in camera raw, that same file in bridge the 'open camera raw' option in the file menu is grayed out?

There are 3 places to check this option, 1 in Bridge preferences itself, 1 in the camera raw preferences via Bridge and the last one in the PS preferences from PSCS3 itself.

  • Camera Raw plugin grayed out?

I'm trying to open my file in Camera Raw, but the option is grayed out and not available.  I've tried from both Bridge and PS.  Any idea what I'm doing wrong?  Ironically, I had Camera Raw open earlier, but now it's not working.  I've also tried rebooting my system, but that didn't work either.
    Thanks!

You are trying to open a PSD file in ACR from Bridge.  That will never work.  I can guarantee you that it has never worked for you either,.
The only files you can open in Camera Raw directly from the Finder or from Bridge, are raw files, JPEGs and TIFFs without layers.
PSD files can only be opened in ACR if they do not have layers and only through the File > Open menu item within Photoshop, by setting Camera Raw in the pop-up menu at the bottom of said Open dialog box in Photoshop.

  • Camera Raw 5_6 is out BUT I couldn't download it!

The Adobe link to download Camera Raw 5.6 for Elements 8
appeares to be broken.  I tried calling Adobe but had limited luck getting them to understand
which was also discouraging/surprising.  Finally got one to understand the issue, but still doesn't work.
Any one successful?  If so how did you get it.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    5. Navigate to the location designated by your version of Photoshop Elements:
    (Please read directory carefully)
    a. Photoshop Elements 7.0: Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 7.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats
    b. Photoshop Elements 8.0: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 8\File Formats\
    6. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
    7. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as Step 5.
If you followed these instructions ACR 5.6 should be working.  The one thing not quite clear above is the location if you have a 64bit machine.  Then the path should be C:\Program Files (x86)\...

  • Lightroom's interpretation of camera raw data washes out colours

After I import images from my Canon 5D, they look different when I go into the develop module. I read the FAQ and I understand that this is caused by the difference between the stored thumbnail on the camera and the way lightroom interprets the raw image data.
The problem is, the tone and colour are always far superior in the camera thumbnail interpretation, and I spend considerable time on Lightroom to try and get the image back to how it originally looked on the camera thumbnail, usually unsucsessfully.
Is there a way I can get lightroom to match exactly the look of the previews stored with the raw file on the camera?
It is a big problem, because after lightroom interprets the data, skin tones look washed out and the colours are not as rich or natural looking.
I don't have this problem on other raw converters, and it is making me look for another software solution if I can't resolve the problem.
    Help!

Well, my eyes must be doing some wonky things then... because in my experience its LR that is cheating me on the colors.
Yes... Canon many times oversaturates the colors... but I'm pretty sure that those red cherries I took a picture of were not pumpkin orange as LR shows them. ACR has some serious hue shift problems, yet not for everyone... it varies from camera model to camera model, and even within camera model from camera to camera.
The best we can do, since ACR isn't intelligent enough, is to fiddle with the calibration settings, and save that as the new default for the camera. (There are scripts that help do this if you have a Color-checker and CS2/CS3... but are of no help if you use only LR or Elements.)
Never expect the default settings in RAW (for ANY converter... Canon's included (with execption, perhaps of Zoombrowser)) to match the preview you see on the camera, or the out-of-camera jpeg. Adjustments will need to be made. Unfortunately in ACR, this means hours of messing the calibration sliders, much trial and error, and perhaps multiple presets to help with different lighting conditions.
That said... I too would like to see ACR improve in this area... but for the mean-time this is the best we can do.
edit: (I'm (slightly) exagerrating the extent of the shift above... but its VERY noticable... and can be very frustrating.
This site: http://www.photoactivity.com/Pagine/Articoli/023%20Calibratori%20al%20sole/Calibratori%20 al%20sole_en.asp explains in more detail than I understand some of the calibration scripts... and even has some screenshots of a color-checker comparing ACR defaults and various scripts to the color-checker. I'd guess the shifts I see are comparable to some of those shifts seen on that page.)

  • Camera Raw Auto Blows Out Images

    Hello,
I simply want to apply the auto function for exposure, brightness, contrast, etc, but when I hit auto, it blows the images out. over exposing them. Any help thanks

Auto exposure works in my experience only with an average image without very high contrast and difference in light and dark parts.
IMHO don't use it, put your effort in color management, calibrated displays, tab and arrow keys for adjusting sliders and let your eyes be the judge of the results :-)

  • Open camera raw greyed out in Bridge

I reinstalled my CS3 Photoshop and Bridge after replacing my hard drive in my Macintosh Pro desktop. All works well until I tried to use Bridge to open camera raw. "open camera raw" is greyed out and there is no way to open those files in Photoshop.
Everything in the rest of the software seems OK.
Thanks for any advice from you folks.

  • Open in Camera raw grayed out for some tifs not others, bridge

I searched but could not find a solution. CSR. PC. Windows xp. In CS4 Bridge the option to open with Camera raw is grayed out in the file menu for some tifs and not others - It shows up grayed out on the file menu, but doesn't show at all when right clicking,  even with the files where open with camera raw is not grayed out in the file menu. I have purged the cache, deleted all temp files, closed both bridge and photoshop and still I cannot open the tif in camera raw. It is grayed out. If I go to the pic I touched up yesterday the option is not grayed out. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

My intent is to batch process in Camera Raw -- my preferences have always been set to use camera raw for TIF and JPG files, and I have never had a problem accessing Camera Raw either directly in PhotoShop itself, or Bridge.

Uh, this is a forum...not an email tech support organization...
As for your issue, it's simply not clear what you are doing or what issue you have. Can you not open the scanned images via Camera Raw from within Bridge? If you can then you will need to go through each image and adjust the ACR settings before you would be able to process them. Depending on how you set up your actions, Photoshop's Batch may or may not catch settings...that part is pretty complicated.
Also, I would question your use of JPEGs vs TIFFs. I would suggest scanning as 16 bit TIFF and running those through Camera Raw...you will be loosing a lot to scan into 8 bit JPEG and then re-running through Camera Raw. You really want to be sending ACR 16 bit images...
