Camera Raw Loses Saturation, Especially Reds

I'm using PSE 5 and ACR 4.3 on Windows. My camera is a Canon 350D and I shoot RAW+JPG.
The problem I have is that photographs with deep/bright reds don't open properly in Camera Raw, but end up "washed out", so I have to really boost the saturation and play around with the white balance to get the reds back. The JPG file which I shot at the same time is absolutely fine, although sometimes the red channel is clipped.
For example, look at the car in the following JPEG. This was taken with auto white balance, and is a fair representation of the actual colour of the car:
Now look at ACR's attempt to open the corresponding RAW file. You can see how the red of the car is much more muted, and a yellower tone:
Can anybody help, and explain how I can get back to nearer the colours captured in the JPEG?
Thanks
Andrew

The issue of the reds in some raw files was recently discussed here:
http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?128@@.3bb6a869.3c0530a0
It's long thread that boils down to something like this:
First, a caveat: there is no antagonism or criticism of any poster intended in my replies to this question. All my replies to posts on this issue are meant to stress that any differences between an ACR conversion and the conversions performed by the camera manufacturer's software may be normal, expected behavior.
If anybody prefers the camera manufacturer's conversion, that too can be emulated in ACR and saved as your own ACR defaults or preset(s). This has been covered ad nauseam here by others as well as by myself. Please do a forum search. If only my posts show up, it means the others have scrolled off already.
Here's the scoop:
Camera manufacturers, Canon and Nikon in particular, perform in-camera RAW to JPEG conversions designed to generate the over-saturated, over-contrasty and over-sharpened images that appeal to the masses.
Their stand-alone RAW conversion software also performs the same conversion to your RAW images.
Noise is also hidden by compressing the shadows so you don't see much of the noise inherent in the image.
In my experience, even the nominally "natural" default settings in these cameras and in the manufacturer's software perform these adjustments to the images, to a lesser but very real degree.
Adobe Camera Raw, ACR, on the other hand, comes with default settings designed to give you the most detail possible (even if this sometimes means revealing some of the noise hidden by the camera manufacturers in their RAW conversion software), as well as the most natural images.
This is only your starting point in ACR.
You can calibrate your camera to ACR and come up with your own settings to produce exactly what you want, including the JPEG-look of the camera manufacturer, and save that as your profile.
The key is to learn how to use ACR properly and to calibrate your camera to ACR.
CLICK HERE for some essential reading.
The ACR defaults are nothing more than a suggested starting point.
The color temperature won't necessarily match either.
These are not
"changes" to the raw file. All raw files are very, very dark, linear, grayscale image with no colors. There is color information included, from which any and all raw converters must create the colors in the converted image according to the parameters of the design of each converter.

  • Camera Raw loses system focus and becomes inactive

While working in ACR if I hover over any of the command buttons, Save Image,  Open Image, Cancel, or Done for a few seconds the "tool tip" for the button displays and as soon as I move the mouse again the whole Camera Raw windows loses system focus and becomes inactive (every tab, control, menu, etc., becomes greyed out).  To regain the system focus I must move the mouse to the windows 7 taskbar and then back into Camera Raw.  If the fullscreen checkbox in Camera Raw is active the only way to regain system focus is to press the Windows Key twice on the keyboard and move the mouse out of the taskbar tray.  This gets pretty frustrating.  Any clues?

It doesn't normally do this, I can assure you.  Normally the tooltips just pop up and Camera Raw stays active.
Do you have any desktop management software installed, besides what Windows provides?

  • Camera Raw- Loses changes

I guess this is a feature request to the powers that be,
After an hour of making changes to numerous photos I hit ESC meaning to hit home on the keyboard.
    All changes were lost.
On a prior occasion I did a large batch that crashed midway through loosing those changes as well.
Since then been doing smaller batches.
I imagine other photographers have spent time and lost changes as well.
If Raw could save the state of the changes while working that would be awesome.
Perhaps generate a .tmp and when final save replace with the .xmp..
    Thanks

Well, hitting ESC and giving up any changes is exactly what the correct behavior should be–that's what ESP in designed to do and to not do that would be a bad break from standards...hitting Done is the correct function to use for what you want. As for saving interim changes while ACR is still open isn't really technically possible since the images are being loaded into a plug-in that can't really start writing anything until the plug-in is finished.
As for ACR crashing, that shouldn't be happening...but that's a separate issue.

  • Where is the "Settings" Option in Camera Raw 4.1 in Elements 5?

I'm using Elements 5 on Windows XP Home Version. Where is the "Settings" Option on RAW 4.1? On RAW 3.5 it was underneath the Histogram. I need to copy settings from a previous RAW file, so I can combine two images into one. The Help Menu on Elements 5 tells me how to do this, but the "Settings" Option it mentions isn't displayed on the screen.
I'd be grateful for any advice.
    Thanks

Thomas Knoll should know everything, since he is the creator of Photoshop and Camera Raw.
Saturation affects all colors in your image.
Vibrance affects the saturation of less saturated colors only.
Recover helps bring out detail in the highlight areas of your image.
Clarity is sort of a sharpness control. To see its effect on your images you must be viewing your image at at least 100% magnification.

  • Bridge CS4 Camera Raw Aberrations

I never had this problem in Bridge CS3.
When I open photos with a lot of white areas in camera raw it creates these red aberrations. The photos do not display it in preview mode until I open it in camera raw. Any ideas?
This happens to images I have been working with for years, just in cs4 bridge. Thank you for any help.

Thank you. Though it still shows the error in the preview, when I open it in camera raw, it is no longer there.
You now need to Purge the Cache for each offending folder through the TOOLS menu in Bridge.  DO NOT use the broken global Purge Cache command in Bridge Preferences.

  • I lose changes in the details when i open my photos from camera raw 7.0 to photoshop cs5, why?

I lose changes that I made with the tools in the "Details" section, just right after I open my photos from camera raw 7.0 to photoshop cs5, why?   The changes that I made with the tools in the "Basic" section remain.

First, how and why are you using Camera Raw 7.0 with CS5?
ACR 7.x requires CS6 to run.
Even if that's a typo in your post and you are running CS6 instead of CS5, no one should be running ACR 7.0, but ACR 8.4 —or at the very least 7.4.
Once any given camera model is supported by a version of ACR, it will continue to be supported in all subsequent versions of ACR.  Each update to ACR has unannounced, unheralded bug fixes and improvements.  Running 7.0 at this point is sheer madness.
    Please clarify.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand, such as your platform (Mac or Win), exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop and of Bridge, machine specs, what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far, what error message(s) you receive, if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them, etc., someone may be able to help you.

  • Camera Raw 7.2 shows flourexcent lights as red

When I open any NEF file from a Nikon D7000 the flourescent lights appear bright red. As I work with the image and eventually open the image into the normal Photoshop Elements 11 editor, the lights appear proper. Is this a known issue?

Most likely you have the Highlight Clipping Warning on in camera raw
Press on the small triangle in the right corner as below or press O on the keyboard to turn the hiighlight clipping warning off.

  • PLEASE make PS CS6 open RED R3D movie files through Camera Raw 7 as 16 bit/channel files

    Hi All,
Why does CS6 Photoshop only open Red R3D movies files as  8 bits per channel ???
This is VERY disappointing , R3D movies should be opened through Camera Raw 7 as 16 bits per channel
Hey Adobe please, Please, PLEASE make this very desirable change
    Many thanks
    Steve

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for the prompt reply.   I understand what you are suggesting however in CS6 PS  when I open a Red R3D file (on my windows machine)
photoshop opens the file as 8 bit/ch  WITHOUT going through ACR, not offering the option of opening it as a 16 bit file in ACR.
I presume PS "thinks" the R3D file is just 8 bit and doesn't "know" to start up Camera Raw 7 to allow opening it as a 16 bit file
No easy fix I'm guessin' ?
    Many thanks
    All the best
    Steve

  • Opening photo in camera raw using cs5 and photo has lots of red and blue in the image?

I am trying to open a photo in camera raw and the image always has a lot of red and blue in the picture? What can I do to avoid this. When I first started learning photoshop this did not happen?
Thanks and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps it would be helpful if you'd post a screen grab showing the problem.  I honestly can't tell from what you're writing whether you're seeing a bug or maybe you've saved some oddball Camera Raw Defaults.
Considering it could be the latter, have you considered setting the image development settings for that image to defaults, or even Resetting the Camera Raw Defaults (which will affect all images in the future)?
-or, if the above doesn't fix it-

  • Help! Thumbnail + files lose Sharpening done in Camera Raw

I sharpen an image in Camera Raw... Looks great. I save it as a JPG to my ext HD. I open and thumbnail previews and file lose the sharpening I applied. Looks terrible. Reinstalled whole Design Premium. Didn't work.
    Thanks for any answers!

Am I to understand you expect your thumbnail previews to be sharpened the same as your images?  These things are generally at two completely different scales.  Sharpening that affects a radius of 1 or 2 pixels in a 3000+ pixel image won't have much visible effect at 800 pixels.
A preview is just that - a preview.  You should not expect to gauge the sharpening of the actual image by the sharpness of the preview generated.  Image sharpening settings have to do with the development of the image, not the generation of the preview.
I think perhaps you're actually trying to solve a problem where you'd like to see more detailed previews on your monitor, e.g., in Filmstrip mode in Bridge, or for a slideshow.  Have you tried investigating the different preview options in Bridge?
Also, something else to look at:  In Bridge, choose Edit - Preferences - Advanced...  Try checking the following setting, remembering to purge the cache afterward in order to cause the preview regeneration.

  • Red highlights not working Camera Raw 8.8

I'm on a imac & just downloaded Camera Raw 8.8.  The red highlights do not show up on blown/over exposed areas.  I have clicked it on & off.  Someone mentioned holding down the alt button while clicking exposure or highlights slider & that worked initially.  But now that doesn't work either.  How do I fix this?

Thanks Benjamin!  I just tried that & the highlights are showing up, but not like they did the older version I had.  I've opened the same picture in both versions.  In 8.8, it has to be drastically overexposed for highlights to show, but there is a ton of area where they don't show.  In the 5.0 version, it showed immediately upon opening the picture.  Is this the way 8.8 is supposed to be or is there something wrong with mine?

  • Red Eye in Camera Raw 4.2

I am unable to find instructions for red eye removal in Camera Raw. When I select the tool and click on the red eye as in photoshop all I get is a beep. Where are the instructions? I have searched this forum and the Instruction disk (I guess that's what constitutes a book now) and can find nothing.

Thanks for the reply but.... this message is directed at Adobe not you. With a program as advanced and complicated as Photoshop "trial & error" is NOT an option. As a professional I do not have the time to "figure out" the basics of the program, not to mention the depths to which Photoshop is capable.
Once again, I am not directing this message towards you. I am hoping Adobe monitors this list.

  • Werid Camera Raw CS red stuff?

I have a tiff file to upload with this post but obviously that feature has been diabled so I'm going to try and discribe this to the best of my ability. I have check memory cards, lens and cameras and narrowed the problem down to camera raw. I have upload all patches and new updates and still no fix. So, I open a file from bride into Camera raw.. its a dng file. There are several red areas all through the picture while its in camera raw and when I paint over some areas doing adjustments say on exposure the red will some times appear as I'm brushing where it wasn't before. I need help because this is making the mass pics I need to edit very difficult....

Yes!!!  Just saw that and just figured it out!!! I'm so mad at myself that I didn't see that and put 2 and 2 together!! Ugh! Thank you so much!

  • PS CS3 images far more red than Camera Raw 4.6

Consistently when opening images in Photoshop CS3 the image as viewed in PS and LR 3.6 is considerably redder than in Camera Raw 4.6 and the Save-for-Web image displayed in Firefox. I principally want my images to be suitable for print media but want then to display properly on the web. Various screenshots attached. My proof setup is set to the monitor icc file. Monitor is a LaCuie 321 calibrated using LaCie Blue Eye. What do I trust? Any input much appreciated.

i am pretty sure Windows Print Screen function embeds its default monitor profile (your posted images don't contain a profile so either you opened/resaved them w/o the profile or i am wrong) perhaps a Windows user can let us know if Windows screenshots contain an embedded monitor profile
embedding the profile is desirable because it will show us what you are seeing
i suspect you have Photoshop Edit> Color Settings> Color Management Polices 'broken' for lack of a better term
for now, try these settings: 3 Preserve Embedded Profiles and 3 Ask checked boxes, quit and reopen Photoshop
that will alert you to any profile mismatches and may expose at lease one of the problems
then run another test to see if Photoshop displays a Profile Mismatch warning when Ps opens your raw document from ACR
if Ps does hit a warning, the correct move will be Use embedded profile

  • Epson r2400 Driver Loses Functionality after Installing Digital Camera Raw

I have four Macs at home and two printers. After installing Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.0 from software update on my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro, the Epson r2400 printer driver no longer works. I can barely get a print out of Aperture and/or Photoshop, however, Pages will output to the r2400 no problem. When I try to print with the other Mac Pro that has not been updated, I can print without issue. I can print from both machines to my kyocera mita printer within aperture and photoshop.
All of these computers are running 10.5.2. The only difference being the most recent Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.0 is installed on the two machines that no longer work with my Epson r2400.
I have uninstalled the print drivers and reinstalled. Changed the connection to the computers and tested everything that has worked in the past. I consider myself pretty good at troubleshooting, but this is beyond my grasp.
I need to print right away from all these computers, so does anyone know how to "roll back" an update? I am not running Time Machine, but that may change very, very soon. Please help...

I'm working off a 750 GB hard drive, not so simple to clone even via firewire. I guess I made a serious mistake by trusting the apple update process...I see they have a new update today. I may try that to see if fixes the problem before I buckle to the original system disk installation process. If the install is already burned, it couldn't hurt to throw some gasoline on it, right?
